Tolkien most likely based lembas on bread known as hard tack that was used during long sea voyages and military campaigns as a primary foodstuff. This very un-magical bread was little more than flour and water which had been baked hard and would keep for months as long as it was kept dry. However, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa wrote in his book Libri tres de occulta philosophia (Book 3, Chapter 13) of a herb from Scythia that allowed people to go for twelve days afterward without any need for food or water. It is also possible that Tolkien based lembas on this description in Agrippa's writings.
In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, the term "lembas bread" is occasionally used. This is incorrect usage; but because the gift of lembas at Lothlórien is not included in the theatrical release of The Fellowship of the Ring, the redundant term "lembas bread" was probably chosen in order to immediately identify the substance to filmgoers at the beginning of The Two Towers.
From the Publisher
This monograph is a collection of analytic articles--both previously published and unpublished in about equal measure--on Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit," written by Tolkien scholar and Comparative Translationist Mark T. Hooker, most famous, perhaps, for his application of Comparative Translation to the study of Tolkien. All of the articles in the book have been reviewed and revised to take into consideration the materials newly made available in "The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion."

----

Beyond Bree and Hither Shore say that there is "something here for everyone with even a passing interest in Tolkien. All of the articles are well researched, insightful, and highly informative."

Amon Hen (the September 2006 issue) says: "Highly recommendable."

Tolkien Studies (No. 4) says: a "pleasantly eccentric volume" . . . "Hooker has a wide variety of things to say that have not been heard before."

Lembas (No. 130, August 2007) says: "All in all, certainly a book that's worth the effort of taking the time to go through peacefully. For linguists--language nuts or not--and also for others, certainly one of the better products of [Tolkien] fandom."

----
The Raynor Memorial Library at Marquette University and the Thuringian University and State Library at Jena, Germany have added a copy of A Tolkienian Mathomium to their collections.
----
Includes illustrations by James Dunning.
The artifacts of Middle-earth are the products of the mind; words and names, rather than skeletons and pottery shards. The literary baggage of each word and name is built up out of all the usages of that word or name that a reader has ever been exposed to. The purpose of this study is to offer the reader a glimpse into my literary baggage for the words that make up Tolkien's Legendarium.
From the Publisher
The artifacts of Middle-earth are the products of the mind; words and names, rather than skeletons and pottery shards. The literary baggage of each word and name is built up out of all the usages of that word or name that a reader has ever been exposed to. The purpose of this study is to offer the reader a glimpse into my literary baggage for the words that make up Tolkien's Legendarium.
