I don't own it myself, but I know where the "third cycle" stuff is found: ''[[Vinyar Tengwar]]'' [[Vinyar Tengwar 41|41]]. Other than that, there is the quote from "[[The Grey Havens]]":

"''As the came to the gates Círdan the Shipwright came to greet them. Very tall his was, and '''his beard was long''', and he was grey and old, save that his eyes were keen as stars; and he looked at them and bowed, and he said: 'All is now ready.' ''"

That's all I've got, I'm afraid. --{{User:Mith/sig}} 11:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

::Hmm, well assuming our article is accurate it contains "Etymological Notes on the Ósanwe-kenta", "From The Shibboleth of Fëanor" and "Notes on Óre" by Tolkien. I just read the Shibboleth of Feanor so I know there's nothing about Cirdan there. I'll see if the other two were published in HoME as well. {{User:Aule the Smith/sig}} 12:00, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

:::Reading around the web I'm pretty sure it's in the Ósanwe-kenta section, but that hasn't been published anywhere but VT. If someone with that issue could verify the discussion about 'third cycles' and beards and then add a reference that would be great. {{User:Aule the Smith/sig}} 12:07, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

::::The Osanwe section of VT41 is two pages words ''Etymologies''-style. Scouring through the issue now. -- {{User:Ederchil/sig}} 12:31, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
::::"Notes on ''Óre''" does briefly mention the aging of Elves and Men, but does not mention a Third Cycle or Círdan. -- {{User:Ederchil/sig}} 12:47, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

:::::Perhaps it's in the main body of the Ósanwe-kenta - issue 39 I think. {{User:Aule the Smith/sig}} 13:16, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

:::::See [http://forums.theonering.com/viewtopic.php?t=1447&start=30 this] (second post down). All online discussions I've seen say it is in VT 41. --{{User:Mith/sig}} 13:28, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
::::::[[The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion|The Reader Companion]] in the chapter [[The Grey Havens]] quotes a part of VT41 with says that [[Círdan]] was in the third circle. I read that part while coming back from vacation. I'll search out the exact page tomorrow. --[[User:Amroth|Amroth]]
::::::Acording to the Reader Companion its on p. 9 of [[Vinyar Tengwar 41]].

::::I'm a little confused about what you all are confused about, but here is my suggestion for a different "beard" paragraph:

<nowiki>The eldest known Elf to remain on Middle-earth, Círdan appeared very old save for his eyes, with a consistent long silver beard.<ref>{{RK|Havens}}</ref> Likely, he had grown a beard since having reached his [[Elven Life cycle#"Cycles of life" and aging|third cycle of life]].<ref>{{VT|41b}}, p. 9</ref></nowiki>

::::I would skip the last paragraph ("His apparent ageing may come from the many pains and troubles he has seen on Middle-earth"), since this seems to me to be mere speculation. --[[User:Morgan|Morgan]] 12:51, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

:::::"Elves did not have beards until they entered the third cycle of life. Nerdanel's father was exceptional, being only early in the second."
::::::::- Vinyar Tengwar 41 p. 9 (reproduced in [[The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion]] p. 674).
:::::--[[User:Amroth|Amroth]]

:::Ignore my earlier remark, it's there, at the bottom of page 9. Full quote: "Elves did not have beards until they entered the third cycle of life. Nerdanel's father [cf.
I have calculated his age as being between 11,363 and 10,405 years at the end of LotR. Should such information perhaps be included? Otherwise, it could only remain in this Talk section. [[Special:Contributions/37.196.206.40|37.196.206.40]] 05:40, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
== When did Círdan leave Middle-Earth? ==

Doesn't the last paragraph of The Silmarillion seem to indicate that he left Middle-Earth with Elrond and others? [[User:Haran|Haran]] 04:24, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

::But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores, '''guarding the Havens until the last ship sails. Then I shall await thee.’'''
::'''White was that ship and long was it a-building, and long it awaited the end of which Círdan had spoken But when all these things were done''', and the Heir of Isildur had taken up the lordship of Men, and the dominion of the West had passed to him, then it was made plain that the power of the Three Rings also was ended, and to the Firstborn the world grew old and grey. In that time the last of the Noldor set sail from the Havens and left Middle-earth for ever. '''And latest of all the Keepers of the Three Rings rode to the Sea''' (...)
:::The Last Ship, carrying Cirdan and Celeborn, apparently sailed before Fo.A. 120 based on Aragorn's final words to Arwen. Aragorn suggests Arwen might still sail into the West, and one of the reasons she gives that this is impossible is that "There is now no ship that would bear me hence...". This implies that the Last Ship had already sailed by Fo.A. 120, the year in which this conversation took place.--[[Special:Contributions/216.185.36.154|216.185.36.154]] 01:14, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

'''Nargothrond''' was the stronghold built by [[Finrod|Finrod Felagund]] which delved into the banks of the river [[Narog]] in [[Beleriand]].

Nargothrond was the capital of the '''realm of Nargothrond'''<Ref group=note>The name appears only in the map accompanying ''[[The Silmarillion]]''. In the text, the realm is mentioned with miniscule letters.</ref> between [[Nenning]], Narog and [[Teiglin]], including the surrounding hills of [[Taur-en-Faroth]] and the [[Talath Dirnen]] to the north, as well as [[Tumhalad]]. Finrod was the overlord of all the [[Elves]] in the [[West Beleriand]], except the [[Falathrim]].<ref>{{S|Realms}}</ref><ref>{{S|Map}}</ref>

==History==
===Creation===
On the western bank of the river [[Narog]], beneath the forested hills of Taur-en-Faroth, the Caverns of Narog were first known as [[Nulukkizdîn]], secretly inhabited by the [[Petty-dwarves]] before they were driven out.<ref>{{S|Doriath}}</ref> What became of the Petty-Dwarves at this time is not recorded, but at least some escaped to dwell in [[Amon Rûdh]].<ref>{{CH|7}}</ref>

[[File:J.R.R. Tolkien - Nargothrond (II) (Colored by H.E. Riddett).jpg|left|thumb|[[J.R.R. Tolkien]] (Colors by [[H.E. Riddett]]) - ''Nargothrond'']]

After the return of the [[Noldor]] to [[Middle-earth]], King [[Thingol]] described the Caverns to his kinsman [[Finrod]]. Inspired by [[Menegroth]] in [[Doriath]], and seeking a hidden place from which to be safe from the forces of [[Morgoth]], Finrod chose those caves to build his great underground fortress, and established Nargothrond. He was aided by the [[Dwarves]] of the [[Ered Luin]], who also made for him the [[Nauglamír]], the Necklace of the Dwarves and gave him his famous epithet, ''Felagund'', Hewer of Caves. Finrod rewarded them with treasures he brought from [[Tirion]].<ref name=return>{{S|Return}}</ref>

Finrod also raised an artificial hill, [[Amon Ethir]], a league far from the gates of Nargothrond.<ref>{{S|Turin}}</ref>

===Days of Power===

Finrod ruled Nargothrond until he joined [[Beren]] in his quest for the [[Silmarils|Silmaril]] and handed rule to [[Orodreth]]. However, since the [[Dagor Bragollach]] [[Celegorm]] and [[Curufin]], the sons of [[Fëanor]], were defeated and retreated to Nargothrond where they were received as one of them. Although the city grew stronger because of this, the influence of the sons of Feänor became higher. Celegorm and Curufin lived in Nargothrond at the time Finrod departed with Beren and were more powerful than Orodreth until Finrod's death was reported, at which time they were exiled.

===Fall===
[[File:Elena Kukanova - Nargothrond - Turin and Finduilas.jpg|thumb|left|Elena Kukanova - ''Nargothrond - Turin and Finduilas'']]
(''Main article: [[Fall of Nargothrond]]'')

[[Túrin|Túrin Turambar]] later came to Nargothrond and became one of its chief fighters, but he also persuaded the people to fight openly against Morgoth (the bridge was built at this time), which eventually led to its sack by the army of the dragon [[Glaurung]].

===Afterwards===
[[Glaurung]] stayed there for about five more years guarding his stolen hoard until he went northeast to [[Brethil]] to assail Túrin and was killed by him at [[Cabed-en-Aras]]. Then, [[Mîm]] the Petty-dwarf settled there reclaiming his people's ancient home until he was killed by [[Húrin]]. Húrin entered the dark caves where the treasures Finrod brought from [[Valinor]] still lay there, but he brought out the [[Nauglamir]].<ref>{{S|Doriath}}</ref>

The realm remained deserted for the rest of the First Age until the [[War of Wrath]] when it went down with the rest of Beleriand.

==Etymology==
From its first conception, the name '''Nargothrond''' means "Underground fortress on the river [[Narog]]". Its [[Petty-dwarves|Petty-dwarvish]] name was '''[[Nulukkizdîn|Nulukkhizdîn]]''' (erronously spelled ''Nulukkizdîn'' in the published works).<ref>{{WJ|10}}</ref>

However, in his later life, [[J.R.R. Tolkien|Tolkien]] devised the Dwarvish name ''Nar(u)kathan'' instead, to which the Elves suffixed ''-[[rond]]'', "vaulted dome".<ref>{{PE|17}}, p. 47</ref>

In [[Eriol]]'s [[Old English]] translations, Nargothrond is referred as ''Hlydingaburg'' "City of the Hlydingas" or ''Stangaldor(burg)''.<ref>{{SM|QA1}}</ref>

The House of the descendants and followers of [[Fingolfin]], second son of [[Finwë]], who was accounted [[High King of the Noldor]] after the death of his elder brother [[Fëanor]] in the first year of the [[First Age]].

During the early years of the First Age, the House of Fingolfin held the lands to the northwest of [[Beleriand]]; [[Hithlum]], [[Nevrast]] and [[Gondolin]]. Of these, the city of Gondolin held until I 510, but Hithlum was overrun by [[Morgoth]] in the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]], where Fingon was slain (Fingolfin had already met his end in the [[Dagor Bragollach]]). The remnant of the House, including Fingon's son [[Gil-galad|Ereinion Gil-galad]], were succoured by [[Círdan]] in the [[Grey Havens]].<ref group=note>In the [[Silmarillion]], Gil-galad's father was [[Fingon]]; in later notes [[Tolkien]] changed him to [[Orodreth]], but never incorporated this change in a narrative. See [[#Other Versions of the Legendarium]]</ref>

After the Nirnaeth, [[Tuor]] son of [[Huor]] was sent as a messenger to [[Turgon]] in [[Gondolin]], and there wedded Turgon's daughter [[Idril]]. Thus was the blood of [[Men]] introduced into the House, and the descendants of their line were named half-elven, given the choice of whether they were to considered [[Men]] or [[Elves]]. All these descendants chose to be considered among the [[Firstborn]], except [[Elrond]]'s brother [[Elros]] (who became the first King of [[Númenor]] and was a direct ancestor of [[Aragorn|Aragorn Elessar]]), and Elrond's daughter [[Arwen]] (Queen to Aragorn at the end of the [[Third Age]]).

After the [[Fall of Gondolin]], the survivors of the House lived as exiles at the [[Mouths of Sirion]] or in the [[Falas]], until [[Eärendil]], descendant of Fingolfin's second son Turgon, sailed into the West to seek the aid of the [[Valar]], who overthrew Morgoth in the [[War of Wrath]] in c. I 583.

The last High King of the Noldor, Ereinion Gil-galad, remained in Middle-earth. Despite having been listed as the son of Fingon in the official Silmarillion, Christopher Tolkien later admitted this was an editorial error on his part. Gil-Galad's correct parentage is [[Orodreth]] of the [[House of Finarfin]].
'''Finwë''' ([[Quenya|Q]], pron. [[Noldorin|N]] {{IPA|[ˈfinwe]}}, [[Vanyarin|V]] {{IPA|[ˈɸinwe]}}) was the first [[High King of the Noldor]], who led his people on the journey from Middle-earth to [[Valinor]] in the blessed realm of [[Aman]]. He was a great friend of [[Thingol|Elwë]], who would later become the [[King of Doriath]].

==History==
===Life in Middle-earth===

The first [[Elves]] awoke in [[Middle-earth]] near the bay of the [[Sea of Helcar]], called [[Cuiviénen]], in {{YT|1050}}<ref name="Annals">{{MR|P2e}}, pp. 71-4</ref>. [[Oromë]], The Huntsman of the [[Valar]], while traveling near the [[Orocarni]] mountains, discovered the Elves and bonded friendship with their kin.

Later, as the Valar decided to call the first Children of [[Ilúvatar]] in Valinor, regarding this call with suspicion, Oromë selected three elves to follow him into Aman and report back what they have seen, in the hopes that they could assuage the fears which were seeded into the hearts of the elves by [[Morgoth|Melkor]]. The three elven ambassadors were [[Ingwë]], Finwë and [[Thingol|Elwë]], who would later become kings of the three factions into which the elven race was split.<ref name=S3>{{S|3}}</ref>

Enamored by the wonders of Valinor, Finwë and his other two companions returned towards the Middle-earth and attempted to convince their respective peoples to follow them back into Aman. Those who agreed to follow Oromë received the name [[Eldar]]. Among them were Finwë's people, who would eventually become known as the [[Noldor]]. They later became students of [[Aulë]] the Smith.<ref name=S3/> Finwë's eldest son, [[Fëanor]], would become the greatest craftsman among the Elves of Valinor.<ref name=S5/>

===Life in Valinor ===
[[Image:J.R.R. Tolkien - Finwe Heraldic Device.jpg|thumb|125px|Finwë's Heraldic Device]]
Upon arriving in the blessed realm of Aman, Finwë was troubled only by the separation from his friend [[Thingol|Elwë]] who chose to remain in [[Beleriand]]. The Noldor settled on the hill of [[Túna]], raised for them by the Valar and, led by Finwë, they lived in the city of [[Tirion]], which they shared with the [[Vanyar]]. It was during the building of Finwë's house that the masons found the earth-gems from which they crafted countless jewels to be given freely for the enrichment of Valinor. Later, Ingwë and his people left the city of Tirion and Finwë remained the only king to rule in Tirion.<ref name=S5>{{S|5}}</ref>

Finwë's first wife was [[Míriel|Míriel Serindë]], skilled in all things that required fineness. From their love a son was born, [[Fëanor|Curufinwë]], who would later become known as Fëanor. As he was brought into the world, he depleted Míriel's strength and zest for life and she requested to be allowed to rest in the gardens of [[Irmo|Lórien]]. Finwë was deeply saddened by this event. He did not wish to leave the young child without a mother, nor did he want him to be their last. But as his wife explained that what would have nourished many children, was all invested in Fëanor, he had no other choice but to accept her request. And thus Míriel, with [[Manwë]]'s counsel, was placed asleep in Irmo's gardens. Her [[fëa]] eventually departed from her body and she became the first person to die in Aman.<ref name=S6>{{S|6}}</ref>
[[File:Steamey - Finwë Mourning Míriel.jpg|thumb|left|Steamey - ''Finwë Mourning Míriel'']]
This was a shocking event for all those present in Valinor, as never one of their own had died of free will. For some time, Finwë lived in sorrow and he often visited Míriel's body, but as his loneliness and lack of joy increased, he stopped seeing her altogether. His entire love now rested with his son, Fëanor, who grew up to be mighty and skilled in all things of hands and mind. He married [[Nerdanel]] and gave Finwë [[Sons of Fëanor|seven grandchildren]].

But Finwë was not content in living alone and he sought to marry for the second time. His second wife was [[Indis|Indis the Fair]], a golden haired [[Vanya]], whom he loved and rejoiced in. She gave him two sons, [[Fingolfin]] and [[Finarfin]], and two daughters, [[Findis]] and [[Írimë]]<ref>{{PM|Shibboleth}}, ''The names of Finwë's descendants''</ref>. Though he was now blissful again, the shadow of Míriel never left the House, especially since Fëanor opposed his father's second marriage.

The sons of Finwë never lived together and never shared close bonds. After the later events surrounding the [[Silmarils]] many blamed Finwë and his desire to have a second wife for the dreadful future misfortune of all those of his House. These accusations had no real merit, as Finwë had always loved his eldest son above all others, and the events surrounding his death would prove it.

===Death===
After three ages of imprisonment, Melkor was released from the duress of [[Halls of Mandos|Mandos]] and, as he gained the trust of the Valar again, he was eventually allowed to roam freely in Valinor.<ref name=S6>{{S|6}}</ref> The treacherous Melkor lusted for the Silmarils, those three great jewels made by the hands of Fëanor, at the might of his skill, and ever he sought a way to steal them. He had sown such lies that all the Noldor began to feel strife and mistrust, against themselves, against the other Elves, and even against the Valar.

The [[House of Finwë]] was no exception. There were already grounds of argument between his sons, and these events only served to deepen these rifts. Finwë called a council and tried to moderate them towards one another. For the moment, his action seemed to be crowned with success, as Fingolfin bowed before Finwë, both privately and publically, to silence the mistrust and arguments he had in regards to his eldest brother. Soon after that the Valar called Fëanor to answer for his words against them. The stem of the evil was exposed and Melkor's covert actions revealed. However, Fëanor too was sentenced to twelve years of exile, and he removed himself north, to the fortress of [[Formenos]]. Due to the great love he had for his eldest son, Finwë renounced his throne as the King of the Noldor and followed Fëanor into exile.<ref>{{S|Unrest}}</ref>

In his fixation to have the Silmarils for himself, Melkor went as far as to claim them at the gates of Formenos. He was fiercely rejected by Fëanor, while Finwë sent messengers to Manwë. It was during a time of festival, that Melkor returned. All the people of Valinor were engaged in the festivities except Finwë, who, out of devotion for Fëanor and bitterness for his son's exile, chose to remain in Formenos, thus refusing to obey Manwë's call.<ref>{{S|Darkening}}</ref> After Melkor and [[Ungoliant]] destroyed the [[Two Trees of Valinor]], they headed towards Formenos. Alone Finwë had the courage to stand before the horror of the Darkness. There, before the doors of Formenos, the former King of the Noldor had been killed and the first blood was spilled in the realm of Aman. Melkor forcefully entered the fortress and stole the Silmarils, sending the Blessed Realm into darkness and causing the Noldor to depart from Valinor.<ref>{{S|Flight}}</ref>

After his death, Finwë dwelt for a time in the Halls of Mandos where he met Míriel, his first wife. Later, when the Valar agreed that Finwë should be brought back to life, he instead decided not to, thus giving Míriel a chance to be reincarnated.<ref>{{MR|P3II2}}, p. 207</ref>

==Etymology==

The name ''Finwë'' is said to be one of the oldest recorded names of the Eldar. It is not certain if ''Finwë'' had any clear meaning, but it can be analyzed as ''fin-'' (derived from [[Common Eldarin]] PHIN "hair") + ''[[-wë]]'' (suffix generally used for male names).<ref>{{PM|Shibboleth}}, p. 340</ref>

The title '''''Ñoldóran''''', "King of the Ñoldor", was an other recorded name of Finwë.<ref>{{PM|Shibboleth}}, p. 343</ref> It is apparently a compound of ''[[Noldo]]'' and ''[[aran]]'' ("king").<ref>{{webcite|website=Arda|author=[[Helge Fauskanger]]|articlename=Quettaparma Quenyallo|articleurl=http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/quen-eng.htm}}</ref>

== Genealogy ==
Finwë had two wives. His first was [[Míriel]], who passed away soon after bearing their only child, [[Fëanor]]. His second wife was [[Indis]], of the [[Vanyar]], who bore him two sons: [[Fingolfin]] and [[Finarfin]], and two daughters: [[Findis]] and [[Írimë]].
== Other Versions of the Legendarium ==

In the first drafts of the genealogy, Finwë had four sons: the youngest was named ''[[Finrun]]'', but he was dropped after that, thus [[Finrod]] (later [[Finarfin]]) was Finwë's youngest son from then on.

In a later version Finwë had three daughters by [[Indis]], [[Findis]] (as their first child) [[Faniel]] (as their third), and [[Finvain]] (as their youngest).<ref>{{PM|XI}}, p. 359 note 26</ref> In yet later versions, Faniel was apparently dropped, while Findis and Finvain were kept. Finvain (renamed [[Írimë]]) was moved to after Fingolfin, thus Finarfin was once again the youngest child of Finwë.
The '''House of Fëanor''' were the cursed descendants and followers of [[Fëanor]], the eldest son of [[Finwë]], and his spouse [[Nerdanel]]. Fëanor was one of the greatest, and certainly the most skilled, of the [[Noldor]], but his burning anger at the loss of his [[Silmarils]] led him to commit acts that would greatly diminish the influence of his house among his people. As the heir of Finwë, Fëanor and his descendants should have inherited the [[High King of the Noldor|High Kingship of the Noldor]], but because of Fëanor's rash acts, the lordship of the Noldor passed to his brothers: [[Finarfin]] in [[Aman]], and [[Fingolfin]] in [[Middle-earth]]. For this reason, the members of the House of Fëanor are referred to as the '''Dispossessed'''.

The history of the House was a woeful one, and most of its members met an early end. Fëanor and six of his seven sons perished before the end of the First Age. His second son [[Maglor]] survived beyond the [[War of Wrath]], wandering the shores of Middle-earth, but his fate is unknown. The last of the House was Fëanor's grandson [[Celebrimbor]], the son of [[Curufin]], who had a great part in the making of the [[Rings of Power]], and was tortured to death by [[Sauron]] during the [[Second Age]].
Thranduil was son of [[Oropher]] and father of [[Legolas]].

== History ==
=== Early History ===
Thranduil was one of the [[Iathrim]] who spent his early life in [[Doriath]].<ref name="Princes"/> Following the destruction of [[Beleriand]] and the [[War of Wrath]], most of the [[Noldor]]in exiles and remnants of the [[Sindar]] retreated to [[Lindon]]. The [[Valar]] reinvited these Elves to [[Aman]], but Thranduil, among many others, was unwilling and remained in Lindon.<ref name="Princes"/>

Many of the Sindar left [[Lindon]] and travelled eastward, before the building of the [[Barad-dûr]] in {{SA|1000}}.<ref name="AppB">{{App|B}}</ref> Thranduil is first recorded in this event, when he and his father, [[Oropher]], arrived, in {{SA|750}}, in [[Mirkwood|Greenwood the Great]].<ref>{{PM|Second}}</ref> Oropher was taken by the [[Silvan Elves]] as their lord and founded the [[Woodland Realm]].<ref name="Princes"/>

[[Image:Anna Lee - Thranduil and Legolas.jpg|left|thumb|[[Anna Lee]] - ''Thranduil and Legolas'']]
The [[Elves of Mirkwood]] joined the [[Last Alliance]] and in {{SA|3434}}, Thranduil followed his father and numerous lightly armed Elves in the [[War of the Last Alliance]]. In the [[Battle of Dagorlad]], Oropher was slain in the first assault upon Mordor, "rushing forward at the head of his most doughty warriors before Gil-galad had given the signal for the advance."<ref name="Princes"/> His son survived, but over the course of the war, two-thirds of his people had perished. After the [[Siege of Barad-dûr]] in {{SA|3441}}, when [[Sauron]] was defeated, Thranduil led the remainder of his people north back to the Woodland Realm, where he was crowned king.<ref name="Princes"/>

=== Third Age ===
Upon the return of Sauron - disguised as the [[Sauron|Necromancer]] - in around {{TA|1050}}, southern Greenwood became increasingly dangerous; evil creatures such as the great [[spiders]] came to dwell in it and the forest soon came to be known as "[[Mirkwood]]".<ref>{{App|TA}}</ref> Thranduil's folk retreated to the north of the forest, where they established themselves near the [[Forest River]]. Thranduil had [[Elvenking's Halls|his halls]] delved underground, fashioned partly in memory (it was said) of the mighty, but long-lost, [[Menegroth]] of [[Doriath]].<ref group="note">In the ''[[Lord of the Rings]]'', it is stated by [[Gimli]] that the [[Dwarves]] aided in the making of Thranduil's halls. However, in the ''[[Unfinished Tales]]'', it is stated that Thranduil's halls "were not to be compared with [[Menegroth]]. He had not the arts nor wealth nor the aid of the Dwarves."</ref><ref>{{TT|Road}}</ref><ref name="Princes"/> In north-eastern Mirkwood, they were near the Forest River behind great, stone gates.

[[File:David T. Wenzel - Mirkwood elves.jpg|thumb|David T. Wenzel - ''Mirkwood elves'']]

In {{TA|2941}}, Thranduil and some of his folk were feasting in the woods when they were repeatedly disturbed by [[Thorin and Company|a party]] of [[Dwarves]]. After the third disturbance, the Elves captured [[Thorin]] who refused to reveal to Thranduil the reason for their journey through Mirkwood.<ref name="Flies"/> Following their battle with the spiders, the rest of [[Thorin and Company|the company]] was also captured by the Elves. Following their repeated failure to explain their presence in Mirkwood, Thranduil placed all the Dwarves under lock and key. They escaped, however, with the aid of a Hobbit, [[Bilbo Baggins]]. Baggins had evaded capture by Thranduil's people through the use of [[The One Ring|his magic ring]].

===Battle of Five Armies===
After the Dwarves' escape, Thranduil received word of what had transpired from the [[Raft-elves]] who returned up the [[Forest River]]. Thus he was now aware of the Dwarves' quest. Upon learning this, he stated, "no treasure will come back through Mirkwood without my having something to say in the matter."<ref>{{H|Welcome}}</ref> He believed the Dwarves were incapable of slaying the Dragon. However, he soon heard from his own messengers (including the birds) that the [[Dragons|Dragon]] [[Smaug]] had been felled (and the [[Lake-town]] was destroyed).

Thranduil was aware that Smaug had a massive hoard of treasure. Believing the Dwarves to be dead, and desiring a share of the treasure, he set out towards the [[Lonely Mountain]] with a company of Elves. On the way, they met messengers from [[Bard]] who was seeking aid for his destroyed town. Thranduil gave aid to these Men, as the [[Lake-men]] had been friends with the Wood-elves, and left elven craftsmen to aid in the labour and building of huts to fortify them against the coming winter.<ref name="Fire">{{H|Fire}}</ref> Together, Thranduil and Bard led their forces towards the Lonely Mountain and were surprised when they found out that the Dwarves not only survived Smaug's attacks, but had taken possession of the Mountain and its treasures; the [[King under the Mountain]] had returned.
[[File:Ted Nasmith - The Arkenstone.jpg|thumb|left|[[Ted Nasmith]] - ''The Arkenstone'']]

As Thorin refused to give away any part of the treasure for [[Dale]] and Lake-town under armed threat, Thranduil and Bard besieged the mountain. After a few days, a Dwarvish host led by [[Dáin Ironfoot|Dáin II Ironfoot]], who had been summoned by [[Ravens|raven]] messengers, approached to support Thorin. But, two evenings before his arrival, Bilbo came before Thranduil and Bard bringing the [[Arkenstone]], a great jewel that Thorin valued above all, in order to make Thorin open to negotiations again. Thranduil was impressed by Bilbo and urged him to remain in order to avoid Thorin's wrath, but Bilbo returned to his friends. The next morning Bard and Thranduil entered into negotiations with an angered Thorin, who agreed to pay one-fourteenth share of the treasure in exchange for the stone. Thranduil was reluctant to start a war over gold, but when the forces of Dáin arrived the next day, before the trade had been made for the Arkenstone, the Dwarves proceeded to attack.

[[Image:Capucine Mazille - The Battle of Five Armies.jpg|thumb|Capucine Mazille - ''The Battle of Five Armies'']]
At that moment, the [[Orcs of the Misty Mountains]] and [[Grey Mountains]] under [[Bolg]] were using the opportunity to march after the hoard, and he was accompanied by a cloud of great bats. After skirmishing among themselves, under the council of Gandalf, the three commanders agreed that the Goblins were the enemies of all. So the [[Battle of Five Armies]] began, "upon one side were the Goblins and the Wild Wolves, and upon the other were Elves and Men and Dwarves."<ref name="Burst">{{H|Burst}}</ref> Thranduil's host was positioned on the southern side of the Mountain, and they were the first to charge. Many Elves and allies were slain and things looked grim when the [[Eagles]] and [[Beorn]] arrived on the battlefield. They turned the tide and the battle was won.
[[File:Alan Lee - The King under the Mountain.jpg|thumb|"The King under the Mountain" by [[Alan Lee]]|left]]
Thorin died soon after the battle. Thranduil laid [[Orcrist]] on Thorin's tomb, where it was said to glow in warning when foes approached.

The victors divided the treasure, with Bard giving Thranduil the emeralds of [[Girion]]. When Bilbo and [[Gandalf]] bade farewell to Thranduil, Bilbo gave him a necklace of silver and pearls. Thranduil gave the [[Hobbits|hobbit]] the title [[Elf-friends|Elf-friend]] and returned with the remainder of his host to his realm in Mirkwood.

=== War of the Ring===

On [[21 March]], {{TA|3018}} [[Aragorn]] and [[Gandalf]] delivered [[Gollum]] as a prisoner to Thranduil; but in June he later escaped. Thranduil sent his son [[Legolas]] to Rivendell to inform [[Elrond]], and during the [[Council of Elrond]] Legolas was selected as one of the nine members of the [[Fellowship of the Ring|Company of the Ring]].<ref>{{FR|II2}}</ref> Another member of the Company was the Dwarf, [[Gimli]], the son of [[Glóin]] of [[Thorin and Company|Thorin's company]], who had previously been imprisoned by Thranduil. The unprecedented friendship between Elf and Dwarf helped to reconcile Thranduil's people and the Dwarves.

On [[15 March]], {{TA|3019}}, [[Sauron]]'s army from [[Dol Guldur]] attacked Mirkwood. There was a long [[Battle Under Trees|battle under the trees]] and the woods were set on fire, but in the end Thranduil was victorious. In the south, the forces of the [[Lord and Lady of Galadhrim]] stormed Dol Guldur and threw down its walls.

On [[6 April]], the Elvenking met with Lord [[Celeborn]] in the midst of Mirkwood and renamed it ''[[Eryn Lasgalen]]'', "The Wood of the Greenleaves". With the forest cleansed and Sauron's forces destroyed, the Woodland Realm was divided. Thranduil received the northern region of the Eryn Lasgalen as far as the Mountains and ruled there into the [[Fourth Age]].<ref name="AppB">{{App|B}}</ref>

=== Fourth Age ===
[[Image:Marya Filatova - Thranduil.jpg|right|thumb|200px|[[Marya Filatova]] - ''Thranduil'']]
Thranduil lived in atunement with nature, wearing a crown of woodland flowers, or autumn berries and red leaves, according to the season.<ref name="Barrels">{{H|Barrels}}</ref> His banner was green in colour.<ref>{{H|Gathering}}</ref> He loved the forest, though it was dark and dangerous in many parts; and enjoyed hunting and feasting among the trees with his people.<ref name="Flies">{{H|Flies}}</ref> He was distrustful of strangers for the most part, although he had business dealings with the men of [[Lake-town]].<ref name="Barrels"/> He was mostly unconcerned with affairs of the world beyond Mirkwood unless a common enemy was shared or for trade with "their kinsfolk in the South, or . . . Men in distant lands."<ref name="Barrels"/>

Although his concern was primarily for his realm, the memory of the end of the [[Second Age]] and what lay outside his borders haunted him:
{{blockquote|But there was in Thranduil's heart a still deeper shadow. He had seen the horror of [[Mordor]] and could not forget it. If ever he looked south its memory dimmed the light of the Sun, and though he knew that it was now broken and deserted and under the vigilance of the Kings of Men, fear spoke in his heart that it was not conquered for ever; it would arise again.|{{UT|6b}}}}

He had a particular fondness for white gems and wanted to acquire more: "if the elf-king had a weakness it was for treasure, especially for silver and white gems; and though his hoard was rich, was eager for more, since he had not yet as great a treasure as other elf-lords of old."<ref name="Flies"/> Despite this weakness, he was wise and would not wantonly go to war, risking his people's lives, over treasure. This was evidenced when the Elvenking said, "long will I tarry, ere I begin this war for gold . . . let us hope still for something that will bring reconciliation."<ref name="Burst"/>
== Etymology ==
The name '''Thranduil''' means "Vigorous spring" in [[Sindarin]], from ''[[tharan]]'' "vigorous" and ''[[tuil]]'' "spring". Thranduil first appears in the level "Barrels Out of Bond", in which he can be overheard speaking about the [[White Council]] and their attack on [[Dol Guldur]]. He returns as a conversation partner in the last level, "The Clouds Burst", in which he and Gandalf ask the player, in the persona of Bilbo, to deliver a message to Bard. No voice actor is specified for this part.
:Thranduil is a hero for the Elven faction. In the good campaign, he shows up after the [[Battle of Dale]], and participates in the Siege of [[Dol Guldur]].

'''2012: ''[[The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey]]'':'''
:Thranduil is played by [[Lee Pace]] in the ''Hobbit'' [[The Hobbit (film series)|film trilogy]].<ref name="PJCasting">{{webcite|author=[[Peter Jackson]]|articleurl=http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150239464391558|articlename=Casting news!|dated=30-April-2011|website=[http://www.facebook.com/ Facebook]|accessed=23-Dec-2011}}</ref> Thranduil is first seen in the prologue paying homage to King [[Thrór]] inside within the [[Lonely Mountain]], though leaves in a huff when the [[Dwarves]] refuse to give him a box of white jewels. He is next seen with an army outside of [[Lonely Mountain|Erebor]] riding a reindeer, seemingly ready to help during the [[Sack of Erebor]]. However, he decides not to help and turns away.

'''2013: ''[[The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug]]'':'''
:Mentioning his past, Thranduil is portrayed as a widower and also an isolationist king who isn't concerned with the evil that happens beyond his borders. He has generously raised [[Tauriel]] for the last 600 years, and also mentions that he has fought the "[[cold-drakes|serpents of the North]]".
:When [[Thorin]] is taken before Thranduil in the [[Elvenking's Halls]], he surmises that he and his [[Thorin and Company|Company]] are going to try to reclaim the [[Lonely Mountain]] from [[Smaug]] (unlike in the book, where he had no idea as to their purpose). He offers a deal to Thorin, saying he will let the Company go if they will pay him the white jewels he desires inside the Mountain. When the Dwarf refuses and chastises him for not offering aid to the [[Dwarves of Erebor|Dwarves]] the day of the Sack, the Elven-king reveals a large disfigurement on his face underneath his skin, mentioning his fighting against the 'great serpents of the North.'
:Later, an [[unseen|invisible]] Bilbo Baggins spies his discussion with Tauriel, having ordered her company of Elves to destroy the [[spiders]]'s nests, but not beyond the borders of the Woodland Realm, displaying his disregard for the outside world.
:He and Legolas interrogate [[Narzug]], a captured [[Orcs|Orc]] who claims that [[Sauron|"The One"]] is returning, and will unleash a powerful weapon (possibly Smaug). Despite his own promise to "set him free", he beheads the orc, and orders the kingdom to be completely sealed off from the outside world.

'''2014: ''[[The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies]]'':'''
:After learning of [[Smaug]]'s demise, Thranduil leads his Elven army to claim the white jewels from the Dwarves of Erebor, even by force. It is revealed that these jewels were meant for his wife, who had been taken to [[Gundabad]] and tortured by Orcs to death many years prior. When the army arrives in [[Dale]], he forges an allegiance with [[Bard]], also offering the [[Lake-town]] refugees food and supplies. When Gandalf arrives at Erebor to warn them of the impending attack by the approaching Orc army, the Elven-king refuses to listen. Thranduil's soldiers come to clashes with those of [[Dáin Ironfoot]] right before the Orcs arrive, leading to the [[Battle of Five Armies]]. Thranduil himself fights in the battle against the Orcs, but withdraws his forces when defence of Dale results in many Elven casualties. This leads to a confrontation between him and [[Tauriel]] before she and [[Legolas]] go to Thorin's aid at [[Ravenhill]]. The event causes a rift between Thranduil and his son, to the point where Legolas decides not to return to the kingdom. Thranduil then advises him to go and find the [[Rangers of the North|Ranger]] known as "[[Strider (Aragorn)|Strider]]" among the [[Dúnedain]]. The Elven-king also accepts Tauriel's love for [[Kíli]] when he finds her mourning over the Dwarf's death.
}}'''Dior''' was the son of [[Beren]] and [[Lúthien]], and the heir to the throne of [[Thingol|Elu Thingol]], [[King of Doriath]]. Dior was one of the [[Half-elven]].

==History==
Dior was born on the island of [[Tol Galen]] in [[East Beleriand]].<ref>{{S|Fifth}}</ref> When he was 27, he married [[Nimloth of Doriath]],<ref group=note>[[Nimloth of Doriath|Nimloth's]] parentage is uncertain. She may have been the daughter of [[Galathil]] and a descendant of [[Elmo]], the younger brother of [[Thingol|Elu Thingol]].</ref> and took her back to live by the [[Lanthir Lamath]] waterfall at the base of the [[Blue Mountains]]. There they had three children: [[Elwing]], [[Eluréd]], and [[Elurín]].

After Thingol was slain by the [[Dwarves]] who coveted the [[Nauglamír]], Dior with his father and a host of [[Green-elves]] of [[Ossiriand]] journeyed swiftly north to the river [[Ascar]] and fought the [[Dwarves of Nogrod]] in the [[Battle of Sarn Athrad]].<ref>{{S|Doriath}}</ref>

He then went to [[Menegroth]] attempting to restore the realm of [[Doriath]]. After the death of his parents, a Lord of the [[Laiquendi]] came to Doriath bringing the Nauglamir, which was worn by his mother. After mourning, he decided to wear it himself. When he placed the Nauglamir on himself, it sat lightly and he appeared as the fairest of three living races: Maiar, Elven, and Human. This news came to the [[Sons of Feanor]], who came to Doriath with their servants, consumed by the [[Oath of Feanor]].

Dior managed to kill [[Celegorm]] (who, ironically, was also called ''the Fair''), and [[Caranthir]] and [[Curufin]] were also slain, but the Kingdom of Doriath was destroyed. So Dior and Nimloth were slain, during the [[Second Kinslaying]], along with anyone preventing the Feanorians from gaining the [[Silmaril]].

After the attack, the servants of Celegorm left Eluréd and Elurín in the forest to die. Elwing, however, carrying the Nauglamir, escaped with the remnant of the [[Iathrim|Elves of Doriath]] to the [[Havens of Sirion]].<ref>{{S|Doriath}}</ref> Years later she would wed [[Eärendil]] and together they would seek aid from [[Valinor]].<ref>{{S|Earendil}}</ref>

'''Vingilótë''' was the ship in which [[Eärendil]] and [[Elwing]] sailed to [[Aman]] to seek pardon and assistance from the [[Valar]]. This vessel was said to be the fairest ever fashioned – it had white timbers of [[Birches|birchwood]] from [[Nimbrethil]], oars of gold, sails of silver,<ref name="Earendil">{{S|Earendil}}</ref> and its prow was swan-shaped.<ref name="Meetings"/>

==History==
After the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] and the [[Fall of the Falas]], the remnant of the [[Noldor]] and [[Men]] gathered about the [[Havens of Sirion]] where Eärendil was their lord. Eärendil sought to sail into the West to seek [[Tuor]] and [[Idril]] and to ask for pardon from the [[Valar]] for his people. For these purposes Vingilótë was built by Eärendil and [[Círdan|Círdan the Shipwright]].<ref group="note">The date of Vingilótë's construction is not known. Tuor and Idril departed in {{FA|525}} and Eärendil began his voyages in {{FA|534|n}} so the ship must have been built sometime within those years.</ref>

Eärendil sailed in Vingilótë while his wife Elwing waited by the mouths of [[Sirion]]. Although he had many adventures he could not make his way to the shores of [[Valinor]]. Finally, having fearful dreams concerning Elwing, he hastened back to [[Middle-earth]]. It was well that he hurried, for the sons of [[Fëanor]], having learned that Elwing possessed a [[Silmaril]], made a sudden attack upon the exiles and refugees of [[Gondolin]] and [[Doriath]]. Though [[Maedhros]] and [[Maglor]] won the battle they did not gain the Silmaril; Elwing cast herself into the sea with the jewel upon her breast.

[[Ulmo]] lifted Elwing from the [[Belegaer|sea]] and transformed her into a great white bird. In this guise she flew to Vingilótë and fell into a swoon, but in the morning regained her normal form. Eärendil and Elwing, with the mariners [[Falathar]], [[Erellont]], and [[Aerandir]], turned westward and again sought Valinor. On this voyage Eärendil stood in the prow of Vingilótë with the Silmaril bound to his brow. The jewel shone ever brighter as they traveled west and by its light and power they pierced the [[Shadowy Seas]].

The fruits of their voyage were to change the world: The Valar received Eärendil's plea, the [[War of Wrath]] was fought, and [[Beleriand]] sank beneath the waves. To Eärendil and Elwing and their sons were given their choice of kindred. The three sailing companions of Eärendil and Elwing were put into a different boat and driven east by a great wind. Lastly, Vingilótë was hallowed, made fair and marvelous,<ref group="note">In [[Bilbo Baggins|Bilbo's]] poem about Eärendil he claimed that Vingilótë was remade "''of [[mithril]] and of elven-glass''". It made the gleam of truesilver visible to the world as the Evening and Morning Star.</ref> and lifted into the sky. There Eärendil eternally sails the vessel with the Silmaril still upon his brow and he and his ship are called [[Gil-Estel]], the Star of High Hope, and [[Star of Eärendil]].

However Vingilótë was used for one last task for the Valar, Elves, and Men. In the [[War of Wrath]], as his forces failed, [[Morgoth]] released the winged [[dragons]]. Led by [[Ancalagon]] the Black, the dragons began pushing back the host of the Valar. Then came Eärendil in Vingilótë with a host of great birds and they gave battle to the dragons. Finally Eärendil slew Ancalagon and the host of the Valar prevailed.<ref name="Earendil"/>

==Etymology==
