The '''House of Fëanor''' were the cursed descendants and followers of [[Fëanor]], the eldest son of [[Finwë]], and his spouse [[Nerdanel]]. Fëanor was one of the greatest, and certainly the most skilled, of the [[Noldor]], but his burning anger at the loss of his [[Silmarils]] led him to commit acts that would greatly diminish the influence of his house among his people. As the heir of Finwë, Fëanor and his descendants should have inherited the [[High King of the Noldor|High Kingship of the Noldor]], but because of Fëanor's rash acts, the lordship of the Noldor passed to his brothers: [[Finarfin]] in [[Aman]], and [[Fingolfin]] in [[Middle-earth]]. For this reason, the members of the House of Fëanor are referred to as the '''Dispossessed'''.

The history of the House was a woeful one, and most of its members met an early end. Fëanor and six of his seven sons perished before the end of the First Age. His second son [[Maglor]] survived beyond the [[War of Wrath]], wandering the shores of Middle-earth, but his fate is unknown. The last of the House was Fëanor's grandson [[Celebrimbor]], the son of [[Curufin]], who had a great part in the making of the [[Rings of Power]], and was tortured to death by [[Sauron]] during the [[Second Age]].

In {{TA|2941}}, Thranduil and some of his folk were feasting in the woods when they were repeatedly disturbed by [[Thorin and Company|a party]] of [[Dwarves]]. After the third disturbance, the Elves captured [[Thorin]] who refused to reveal to Thranduil the reason for their journey through Mirkwood.<ref name="Flies"/> Following their battle with the spiders, the rest of [[Thorin and Company|the company]] was also captured by the Elves. Following their repeated failure to explain their presence in Mirkwood, Thranduil placed all the Dwarves under lock and key. They escaped, however, with the aid of a Hobbit, [[Bilbo Baggins]]. Baggins had evaded capture by Thranduil's people through the use of [[The One Ring|his magic ring]].

After the Dwarves' escape, Thranduil received word of what had transpired from the [[Raft-elves]] who returned up the [[Forest River]]. Thus he was now aware of the Dwarves' quest. Upon learning this, he stated, "no treasure will come back through Mirkwood without my having something to say in the matter."<ref>{{H|Welcome}}</ref> He believed the Dwarves were incapable of slaying the Dragon. However, he soon heard from his own messengers (including the birds) that the [[Dragons|Dragon]] [[Smaug]] had been felled (and the [[Lake-town]] was destroyed).

Thranduil was aware that Smaug had a massive hoard of treasure. Believing the Dwarves to be dead, and desiring a share of the treasure, he set out towards the [[Lonely Mountain]] with a company of Elves. On the way, they met messengers from [[Bard]] who was seeking aid for his destroyed town. Thranduil gave aid to these Men, as the [[Lake-men]] had been friends with the Wood-elves, and left elven craftsmen to aid in the labour and building of huts to fortify them against the coming winter.<ref name="Fire">{{H|Fire}}</ref> Together, Thranduil and Bard led their forces towards the Lonely Mountain and were surprised when they found out that the Dwarves not only survived Smaug's attacks, but had taken possession of the Mountain and its treasures; the [[King under the Mountain]] had returned.

As Thorin refused to give away any part of the treasure for [[Dale]] and Lake-town under armed threat, Thranduil and Bard besieged the mountain. After a few days, a Dwarvish host led by [[Dáin Ironfoot|Dáin II Ironfoot]], who had been summoned by [[Ravens|raven]] messengers, approached to support Thorin. But, two evenings before his arrival, Bilbo came before Thranduil and Bard bringing the [[Arkenstone]], a great jewel that Thorin valued above all, in order to make Thorin open to negotiations again. Thranduil was impressed by Bilbo and urged him to remain in order to avoid Thorin's wrath, but Bilbo returned to his friends. The next morning Bard and Thranduil entered into negotiations with an angered Thorin, who agreed to pay one-fourteenth share of the treasure in exchange for the stone. Thranduil was reluctant to start a war over gold, but when the forces of Dáin arrived the next day, before the trade had been made for the Arkenstone, the Dwarves proceeded to attack.

At that moment, the [[Orcs of the Misty Mountains]] and [[Grey Mountains]] under [[Bolg]] were using the opportunity to march after the hoard, and he was accompanied by a cloud of great bats. After skirmishing among themselves, under the council of Gandalf, the three commanders agreed that the Goblins were the enemies of all. So the [[Battle of Five Armies]] began, "upon one side were the Goblins and the Wild Wolves, and upon the other were Elves and Men and Dwarves."<ref name="Burst">{{H|Burst}}</ref> Thranduil's host was positioned on the southern side of the Mountain, and they were the first to charge. Many Elves and allies were slain and things looked grim when the [[Eagles]] and [[Beorn]] arrived on the battlefield. They turned the tide and the battle was won.

Thorin died soon after the battle. Thranduil laid [[Orcrist]] on Thorin's tomb, where it was said to glow in warning when foes approached.

The victors divided the treasure, with Bard giving Thranduil the emeralds of [[Girion]]. When Bilbo and [[Gandalf]] bade farewell to Thranduil, Bilbo gave him a necklace of silver and pearls. Thranduil gave the [[Hobbits|hobbit]] the title [[Elf-friends|Elf-friend]] and returned with the remainder of his host to his realm in Mirkwood.

When the army arrives in [[Dale]], he forges an allegiance with [[Bard]], also offering the [[Lake-town]] refugees food and supplies. When Gandalf arrives at Erebor to warn them of the impending attack by the approaching Orc army, the Elven-king refuses to listen. Thranduil's soldiers come to clashes with those of [[Dáin Ironfoot]] right before the Orcs arrive, leading to the [[Battle of Five Armies]]. Thranduil himself fights in the battle against the Orcs, but withdraws his forces when defence of Dale results in many Elven casualties. This leads to a confrontation between him and [[Tauriel]] before she and [[Legolas]] go to Thorin's aid at [[Ravenhill]]. The event causes a rift between Thranduil and his son, to the point where Legolas decides not to return to the kingdom. Thranduil then advises him to go and find the [[Rangers of the North|Ranger]] known as "[[Strider (Aragorn)|Strider]]" among the [[Dúnedain]]. The Elven-king also accepts Tauriel's love for [[Kíli]] when he finds her mourning over the Dwarf's death.

Dior was born on the island of [[Tol Galen]] in [[East Beleriand]].<ref>{{S|Fifth}}</ref> When he was 27, he married [[Nimloth of Doriath]],<ref group=note>[[Nimloth of Doriath|Nimloth's]] parentage is uncertain. She may have been the daughter of [[Galathil]] and a descendant of [[Elmo]], the younger brother of [[Thingol|Elu Thingol]].</ref> and took her back to live by the [[Lanthir Lamath]] waterfall at the base of the [[Blue Mountains]]. There they had three children: [[Elwing]], [[Eluréd]], and [[Elurín]].

After Thingol was slain by the [[Dwarves]] who coveted the [[Nauglamír]], Dior with his father and a host of [[Green-elves]] of [[Ossiriand]] journeyed swiftly north to the river [[Ascar]] and fought the [[Dwarves of Nogrod]] in the [[Battle of Sarn Athrad]].<ref>{{S|Doriath}}</ref>

He then went to [[Menegroth]] attempting to restore the realm of [[Doriath]]. After the death of his parents, a Lord of the [[Laiquendi]] came to Doriath bringing the Nauglamir, which was worn by his mother. After mourning, he decided to wear it himself. When he placed the Nauglamir on himself, it sat lightly and he appeared as the fairest of three living races: Maiar, Elven, and Human. This news came to the [[Sons of Feanor]], who came to Doriath with their servants, consumed by the [[Oath of Feanor]].

Dior managed to kill [[Celegorm]] (who, ironically, was also called ''the Fair''), and [[Caranthir]] and [[Curufin]] were also slain, but the Kingdom of Doriath was destroyed. So Dior and Nimloth were slain, during the [[Second Kinslaying]], along with anyone preventing the Feanorians from gaining the [[Silmaril]].

After the attack, the servants of Celegorm left Eluréd and Elurín in the forest to die. Elwing, however, carrying the Nauglamir, escaped with the remnant of the [[Iathrim|Elves of Doriath]] to the [[Havens of Sirion]].<ref>{{S|Doriath}}</ref> Years later she would wed [[Eärendil]] and together they would seek aid from [[Valinor]].<ref>{{S|Earendil}}</ref>

After the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] and the [[Fall of the Falas]], the remnant of the [[Noldor]] and [[Men]] gathered about the [[Havens of Sirion]] where Eärendil was their lord. Eärendil sought to sail into the West to seek [[Tuor]] and [[Idril]] and to ask for pardon from the [[Valar]] for his people. For these purposes Vingilótë was built by Eärendil and [[Círdan|Círdan the Shipwright]].<ref group="note">The date of Vingilótë's construction is not known. Tuor and Idril departed in {{FA|525}} and Eärendil began his voyages in {{FA|534|n}} so the ship must have been built sometime within those years.</ref>

Eärendil sailed in Vingilótë while his wife Elwing waited by the mouths of [[Sirion]]. Although he had many adventures he could not make his way to the shores of [[Valinor]]. Finally, having fearful dreams concerning Elwing, he hastened back to [[Middle-earth]]. It was well that he hurried, for the sons of [[Fëanor]], having learned that Elwing possessed a [[Silmaril]], made a sudden attack upon the exiles and refugees of [[Gondolin]] and [[Doriath]]. Though [[Maedhros]] and [[Maglor]] won the battle they did not gain the Silmaril; Elwing cast herself into the sea with the jewel upon her breast.

[[Ulmo]] lifted Elwing from the [[Belegaer|sea]] and transformed her into a great white bird. In this guise she flew to Vingilótë and fell into a swoon, but in the morning regained her normal form. Eärendil and Elwing, with the mariners [[Falathar]], [[Erellont]], and [[Aerandir]], turned westward and again sought Valinor. On this voyage Eärendil stood in the prow of Vingilótë with the Silmaril bound to his brow. The jewel shone ever brighter as they traveled west and by its light and power they pierced the [[Shadowy Seas]].

The fruits of their voyage were to change the world: The Valar received Eärendil's plea, the [[War of Wrath]] was fought, and [[Beleriand]] sank beneath the waves. To Eärendil and Elwing and their sons were given their choice of kindred. The three sailing companions of Eärendil and Elwing were put into a different boat and driven east by a great wind. Lastly, Vingilótë was hallowed, made fair and marvelous,<ref group="note">In [[Bilbo Baggins|Bilbo's]] poem about Eärendil he claimed that Vingilótë was remade "''of [[mithril]] and of elven-glass''". It made the gleam of truesilver visible to the world as the Evening and Morning Star.</ref> and lifted into the sky. There Eärendil eternally sails the vessel with the Silmaril still upon his brow and he and his ship are called [[Gil-Estel]], the Star of High Hope, and [[Star of Eärendil]].

However Vingilótë was used for one last task for the Valar, Elves, and Men. In the [[War of Wrath]], as his forces failed, [[Morgoth]] released the winged [[dragons]]. Led by [[Ancalagon]] the Black, the dragons began pushing back the host of the Valar. Then came Eärendil in Vingilótë with a host of great birds and they gave battle to the dragons.
