Many Partings is the sixth chapter of the second book in The Return of the King.

Summary
After many days, when the festivities were over, the Company set out for Rivendell. Aragorn told Frodo that he knew the Hobbit wished for nothing more than to return home. Frodo answered that he wished first to stop off at Rivendell to visit Bilbo Baggins one last time, as the older Hobbit would likely die soon. Arwen gave Frodo a white jewel and told him that he might have the privilege of sailing to the Blessed Realm in her place.

When the hobbits left Minas Tirith, they were accompanied by many members of the Gondorian court. They stopped at Rohan and bade farewell to Éomer, honouring the memory of Théoden. At this feast, Faramir and Éowyn became betrothed. After a brief stay in Rohan, they set off again.

Arriving in Isengard, they met Treebeard, the Ent leader who orchestrated the march on Saruman in The Two Towers. The Ents had promised to guard Saruman’s old stronghold of Orthanc, ensuring that the corrupt wizard would never escape. Treebeard told them of the flight of many Orcs and the doom the Orcs met in the forest. He related that he reported news regularly to Saruman, who would come to the window of Orthanc to listen. But then the wizard withered away. Treebeard, to Gandalf’s dismay, had released Saruman, for he did not wish to keep such a miserable creature caged. Gandalf warned Treebeard that Saruman still had the power of his voice—a power he had used to his advantage in the past.

Proceeding onward, the group came upon an old, ragged man leaning on a staff. They recognize him as Saruman. Another beggar in his company was Wormtongue, his former servant. The deposed Saruman was bitter but powerless. Galadriel and Gandalf offered Saruman mercy and reprieve. Their kindness irritated Saruman, who claimed that with his demise, theirs would soon follow. After a few more days of slow and pleasant travel, Galadriel and Celeborn turned eastward and returned home.

The remaining travellers reached Rivendell and the House of Elrond, and they found Bilbo. The old hobbit sat quietly in a small room, surrounded by bits of paper and pencils. The next day, all of Rivendell celebrated Bilbo’s 129th birthday. After a fortnight, Frodo realized that he must return to the Shire. Bilbo chose to remain in Rivendell, for he was far too old for any more travel. Bilbo gave Frodo three books of collected lore entitled Translations from the Elvish, asking Frodo to finish editing them. Before Frodo left, Elrond took the hobbit quietly aside, assuring him that in time he himself would visit the Shire, and he would bring Bilbo with him.
|}}
The Stoors were one of the three breeds of Hobbits.

In their earliest recorded history the Stoors, like the other Hobbits, lived in the Vales of Anduin. They were a riverside people that dwelt in the Gladden Fields, and were fishermen.
Characteristics
They were heavier and broader in build than the other Hobbits, and had large hands and feet. Among the Hobbits, the Stoors most resembled Men and were most friendly to them. Stoors were the only Hobbits who normally grew facial hair.

A habit which set them apart from the Harfoots who lived in the mountain foothills, and the Fallohides who lived in forests far to the north, was that Stoors preferred flat lands and riversides. Only Stoors used boats, fished, and could swim. They also wore boots in muddy weather.

Stoorish characteristics and appearance remained among the Hobbits of the Eastfarthing, Buckland (such as the Brandybucks) and the Bree-hobbits.

The Stoors also had their own dialect of Hobbitish, owing to the fact that they spent some time in Dunland and adopted many strange words and names which they took to the Shire, and retained even until the late Third Age.

History
The Stoors are believed to have lived in the southern vales of Anduin. During the Hobbit Wandering Days, after the Harfoots had migrated westward in Third Age 1050, and the Fallohides followed them about a century later, the Stoors long remained back in the vale of Anduin, but between 1150 and 1300 they, too migrated west.

Unlike the other Hobbit-kinds they took the Redhorn Pass and followed a southern route, where many Stoors branched off and moved south to the Angle of Eriador south of Rivendell and mingled with the Harfoots and Fallohides that lived there; but most went to Dunland (Swanfleet near Tharbad) which most resembled their old lands. There they came into contact with the Dunlendings. This contact altered their speech slightly, mostly by picking up a few Dunlending words.

A hundred years later Angmar began to threaten Eriador and many Stoors of the Angle fled south to their kin in Dunland where they became a woodland people; others returned to Rhovanion and settled the Gladden Fields, becoming a riverland people, which Déagol and Sméagol belonged to (c. 2430). There they had a matriarchal society. What became of those Stoors and whether they rejoined their folk in Eriador, no history tells.

The Stoors of Dunland moved back north to join the other Hobbits in colonizing the Shire about 1630 and settled mostly in the Eastfarthing and Southfarthing. Some of these villages might have survived until the War of the Ring, when they were sought out by the Ringwraiths. One result of the Stoorish influx was that places that were settled by Stoors have some slight linguistic oddities, due to their time of separation and contact with the Dunlendings. The three original Hobbit-kinds merged and blended in the centuries since the settlement of the Shire, but regional variations remained with Stoorish characteristics seen in Eastfarthing and Buckland..

Etymology
Stoor is supposed to be a special Hobbitish word that did not exist in Westron during the War of the Ring.

Early English stor, stoor means "large, strong", referring to the fact that these Hobbits were of heavier build.
The "Three Hunters" was the name that Aragorn bestowed upon the remnant of the Fellowship of the Ring—including himself, Legolas, and Gimli—on 26 February3019 as they began tracking the Uruk-hai that had captured Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took at Amon Hen.

The Three Hunters descended Emyn Muil and entered Rohan; with Aragorn's tracking skills, they successfully followed the right track and even found Pippin's Elven brooch, which had been dropped for them to find. The hunt continued for three days.

On 30 February they encountered Éomer and his éored who had slaughtered the Orc-band the day before and were on the way back to Edoras. Éomer demanded their names and business and fighting almost broke out between Gimli and Éomer. Aragorn prevented the fight and Éomer listened to their story of their journey and the losses of Gandalf, Boromir, and the two young hobbits. Although Éomer believed that the hobbits must have been slain in the attack, he lent them two horses— Hasufel and Arod—and asked them to prove his trust by bringing them back to Edoras.

With their horses, the Three Hunters followed Éomer's instructions and reached the outskirts of Fangorn Forest. As night fell they encountered an old man who vanished, as did their horses. On 1 March Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli met Gandalf the White and their hunt was over, although it was not until 5 March that they again saw Merry and Pippin at Isengard. Later the two hobbits would follow other paths during the War of the Ring but Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli stayed together to the end.
Emyn Muil was a range of hills south of the Brown Lands and north of the Nindalf. The Anduin cut through the hills and then pooled in Nen Hithoel. The Fellowship of the Ring rode boats through Emyn Muil before the group broke up near the southern boundary of the hills. Afterwards Frodo and Sam hiked through the difficult terrain east of the river and met Gollum just below the eastern edge of the Emyn Muil.

Geography
The hills rose gradually in the north with great brakes thorn and sloe, brambles and creepers. Near the river ivy clung to grey stone chimneys and further ridges were topped with firs twisted by wind. On three sides Emyn Muil ended in cliffs: In the west the uplands ended abruptly in the East Wall of Rohan. In the south the Anduin cascaded over Rauros, a great waterfall. In the east, although of lower elevation, the barren hills still ended in a steep edge.

The Anduin cut through the hills on its southward course. In the north the river narrowed and passed through Sarn Gebir. No boats could survive these rapids and travelers had to use a portage way on the west bank. South of Sarn Gebir the river plunged between towering cliffs until it passed between the two great statues of the Argonath. A little further and the pent waters opened into a long oval lake called Nen Hithoel. On the southern end of the lake were three peaks: Amon Lhaw on the east bank, Tol Brandir amid two arms of the river, and Amon Hen on the western side. At the foot of Amon Hen was a green clearing, Parth Galen, and south of it was the North Stair that allowed for passage to the bottom of Rauros and Emyn Muil.

History
After Prince Minalcar of Gondor had defeated a large army of Easterlings in 1248 (and took the name Rómendacil) he fortified the west bank of the Anduin and built the pillars of the Argonath in the Emyn Muil.

In 2510, the Steward Cirion bequeathed the land of Calenardhon to Eorl the Young. After pledging the Oath of Eorl the bounds of the new realm of Rohan were determined; in the east these were the Anduin and the west-cliff of the Emyn Muil.

In 3002 Orc raiders battled with some Rohirrim, and Éomund was slain there.

Aragorn captured Gollum on 1 February, 3017 in the Dead Marshes. To avoid detection by the spies of Sauron, Aragorn drove his captive through the northern Emyn Muil before crossing the Anduin.

In 3019 the Fellowship of the Ring encountered the Emyn Muil. The following list of dates show what events took place in the hilly region:
* 23 February: The Fellowship was attacked near Sarn Gebir
* 25 February: They passed the Argonath and camped at Parth Galen.
* 26 February: The Fellowship broke and Boromir was slain. Frodo and Sam struck east across the Emyn Muil while Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas pursued the Orcs carrying Merry and Pippin west through the hills.
* 27 February: Aragorn and his companions left the Emyn Muil at dawn, entering the Eastemnet.
* 29 February:Frodo and Sam descended from the Emyn Muil and captured Gollum.

Etymology
Emyn Muil is a Sindarin name meaning "the drear hills"; the word emyn is the plural form of amon ("hill").
