Léod was a great horseman and during his rule he captured a white foal that was wild and proud. When the horse was grown Léod tried to break her, but instead was thrown off and hit his head on a rock and died. His elder brother Baldor had been lost while attempting to pass the Paths of the Dead, and so Aldor succeeded his father to become the third King of Rohan. He was just twenty-six years old when he came to the throne, and his reign of seventy-five years was the longest in the annals of the Mark. On account of his great age—he reached his one hundred and second year before he died—he is often referred to as Aldor the Old.

Aldor was the founder of a golden age in Rohan's history. In his time, the Rohirrim increased greatly in numbers, and he succeeded in driving all the Dunlendings from his realm. Aldor had many children, of which the three eldest were daughters. It was later discovered that the Dunlendings had secretly been moving back into the northwestern uplands of Rohan throughout the reigns of Déor's predecessors. By Déor's own time, a powerful Dunlendish force had been established, and the King was forced to ride northward from Edoras, ultimately to defeat his enemies. The victory was a bitter one, though, for he discovered that the Dunlendings had also captured the Ring of Isengard, which Déor had no possible means of recapturing. So Déor's reign saw the beginning of a danger from the north that would reach a crisis nearly fifty years later, when the Dunlendings were to come close to destroying Rohan alogether.

Déor's turbulent reign lasted nineteen years. He was succeeded as King by his son, Gram.
His lands stood on either side of the River Adorn, which marked Rohan's western border, and it was said that he had Dunlendish blood in his veins, too, from the people of Dunland beyond the border. Nonetheless he was a lord of Rohan and a councillor to its King, Helm Hammerhand.

Freca attempted to strengthen his power in Rohan by marrying his son, Wulf, to Helm's daughter. He travelled to Edoras with a force of Men to compel the King to agree, but instead Helm struck him a deadly blow with his fist. Freca's family and followers fled from Helm's anger, but four years later Wulf returned, invading Rohan with an army of Dunlendings, an invasion in which Helm was killed. Nevertheless, the slaying of Freca was not forgotten by his people, and even at the time of the War of the Ring, more than two hundred and fifty years later, the memory of his death still kindled hatred of the Rohirrim among the Dunlendings.
When Freca's plan failed, he was slain, and Wulf found himself declared the King's enemy. He fled across the borders into Dunland, where he seems to have been warmly received (it was said that Freca's family had a measure of Dunlendish blood). For four years, Wulf built up his power in Dunland, and allied himself with Rohan's enemies.

In the year Third Age 2758, with Rohan's armies drawn into the east to repel an attack there, Wulf and his allies invaded from the west. They overran the country and took Edoras, where Wulf sat in the Golden Hall and claimed the Kingship of Rohan. The true King, Helm, was driven into hiding in the mountains, and he died in the Long Winter that followed. In the spring, Helm was avenged by his nephew Fréaláf Hildeson, who led a small party into Edoras and killed 'King' Wulf. With help from Gondor, Fréaláf cleared Wulf's followers from Rohan, and succeeded his uncle Helm to become its tenth rightful King.

Helm Hammerhand (Third Age 2691 – 2759, aged 68 years) was the ninth King of Rohan and last King of the first line.

He became King at the death of his father Gram, during a time of crisis. His father had already fought open warfare with the Dunlendings, who operated from the captured fortress of Isengard.

Later in his reign a man named Freca appeared, a Dunlending with Rohirric blood. Freca held lands at either side of the river Adorn, the border of Rohan, and claimed to be a descendant of King Fréawine of Rohan. He planned to let his son, Wulf, marry the daughter of Helm. Freca marched to Edoras with a great force of men, planning to threathen the King to comply with his demands, but Helm Hammerhand smote him with his fist. Enraged, the men of Freca left Edoras, returning with a great force of Dunlendings. Under the leadership of Wulf they overran Rohan, but Helm withdrew in the Hornburg at Helm's Deep (which was later thus renamed in his honor), and there endured a long siege.

The Hornburg held a large war-horn, and whenever it was blown Helm would break through the Dunlending ranks, slaying many of their men. It is believed that many of the men he killed he did so with his bare hands. This led to a belief under the Dunlendings that the wraith of Helm Hammerhand still wandered through Rohan, and defended the Hornburg. However, at the end of the war Helm Hammerhand and his sons Haleth and Háma were slain. Once Helm died, his body was discovered frozen in the snow still standing, his eyes open, ready to fight.

He was succeeded by his nephew Fréaláf Hildeson, who defeated the Dunlendings.
His son Thengel left Rohan because of disagreements with his father, living with his wife's family in Gondor instead.

After a rule of over 40 years Fengel died in 2953, and Thengel reluctantly returned to Rohan.

Thengel (Third Age 2905 – 2980, aged 75 years) was the sixeenth King of Rohan.

Thengel was the only son of Fengel, and became king after the death of his father in Third Age 2953.

Fengel was a greedy man, and Thengel left Rohan in his youth and went to live with his mother's family in Gondor. Eventually he met and married Morwen Steelsheen of Lossarnach, and he lived with her there for a while.

After Fengel died Thengel was called upon to return to Rohan, which he reluctantly did. Morwen bore him five children in total (four daughters and a son), including his only son (his second child) Théoden and a daughter Théodwyn, who would be the mother of Éomer and Éowyn.

Thengel had learned Sindarin while living in Gondor, and in his house it was the daily tongue, together with Westron the common speech. Rohirric was not spoken by him or his heirs.

Morwen Steelsheen (Third Age 2922 – ?) was also called Morwen of Lossarnach, the queen to King Thengel of Rohan, and mother to his heir Théoden. She was much younger than her husband, who wedded her late in his life (2943), and they lived for a time in her homeland of Lossarnach, to the south and west of Minas Tirith. Morwen was 17 years younger than her husband thus she was most likely born in 2922. When his father Fengel died, Thengel inherited Kingship of Rohan, and travelled with Morwen back to his own land. Morwen bore five children in all, including Thengel's heir Théoden, and Théodwyn, who would be the mother of Éomer and Éowyn. She was called Steelsheen because of her grace. Morwen appears to have died sometime before the War of the Ring.

Beorn was a skin-changer, a man who could assume the appearance of a bear. He lived with his tame horses in a wooden house between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood, to the east of the Great River of Wilderland. His origins lay in the distant past, and Gandalf suspected he and his people had originally come from the mountains.

Beorn named the Carrock and created the steps that led from its base to the flat top.

In The Hobbit, Beorn received Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, and the thirteen Dwarves and gave the Dwarves and Bilbo help in their quest. In the Battle of Five Armies, Beorn rescued Thorin Oakenshield from the Goblins and killed their leader Bolg.

By the time of the War of the Ring, Beorn had become a leader of Men which included other skin-changers, and woodmen. His people were known as the Beornings, and they helped defend Thranduil's kingdom of northern Mirkwood. He died some time before the War of the Ring itself began, and was succeeded by his son Grimbeorn the Old.

Beorn is the Old English word for a bear, and sometimes was indeed used as a name. It is related to the Norse name Bjorn which, in turn, may suggest a connection to berserkers.
Third Age 2977) of Lake-town was one of the most skilled archers among Men and was the heir of Girion, the last king of old Dale. Bard was able to slay the Dragon Smaug with a single arrow after a tip from the old thrush (who had overheard Bilbo Baggins' description of Smaug) revealed an unarmoured spot on the Dragon's

Bard claimed a twelfth of the treasure amassed by the dragon, which he subsequently shared with the Master of Lake-town to rebuild the town. However, the Master stole the money and ran off into the wild where he died. Four years later, after the rebuilding of the city, Bard became the first King of restored Dale. Théoden (Third Age 2948 – March 15, 3019, aged 71 years) was the seventeenth King of Rohan, ruling for 39 years, from Third Age 2980 until his death. He was the last of the Second Line.

Théoden was the oldest son of Thengel, and became king after the death of his father in Third Age 2980. Théoden spoke Sindarin and Westron rather than Rohirric, and in his youth spent time in Gondor.

His sister Théodwyn lived with him in Edoras, and after she and her husband both died he adopted her children Éomer and Éowyn as his own. He had a son, Théodred, whose mother Elfhild died in childbirth. In one of Tolkien's early drafts, Théoden also had a daughter by the name of Idis, but she was eventually removed when her character was eclipsed by that of Éowyn.

By the time of the War of the Ring, Théoden had been king for nearly 30 years, and was getting old and tired. He was increasingly misled by his chief advisor Gríma (or Wormtongue as most others in the Mark called him), who was secretly in the employ of Saruman the White; Gríma may even have been poisoning his lord. He also had a minstrel called Gleowine.

In the last years before the War of the Ring, Théoden let his rule slip out of his hands, and Gríma became increasingly powerful. Rohan was troubled again by Orcs and Dunlendings, who operated under the will of Saruman, ruling from Isengard.

When Théodred was mortally wounded at a Battle at the Fords of Isen with the Orcs of Saruman, his nephew Éomer became his heir. Éomer was out of favour with Wormtongue, however, and was eventually arrested.

When Gandalf the White and Aragorn appeared before him, Théoden initially rebuffed Gandalf's advice to ride out against Saruman, but after being healed by the Wizard, he restored his nephew, took up his sword, and led the Riders of Rohan into battle at Helm's Deep. After this he became known as Théoden Ednew, the Renewed, because he had thrown off the yoke of Saruman.

He led the Rohirrim to the aid of Gondor at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. In that battle he challenged the Black Serpent of the Haradrim, and slew him and his standard-bearer. The Lord of the Nazgûl attacked him, and he was mortally wounded when his horse Snowmane fell upon him after being frightened by the Ringwraith's Fell beast. He was immediately avenged by Éowyn and the Hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck, both of whom had ridden to war in secret. He claimed to Merry at his death on the field that he was satisfied, for he had felled the Black Serpent.

In Tolkien's fictional etymology, the name Théoden is a translation of the original Rohirric Tûrac, an old word for King, showing influence from the Elvish stem tur- ("power/mastery"), also present in Turgon and related names. The name is probably taken from the Anglo-Saxon word "þeoden", meaning "Lord". It is related to the Old Norse word þjóðann, meaning "Leader of the People" (i.e. "King"). Théoden's sword was called Herugrim.

Portrayal in Adaptations
In Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated version of The Lord of the Rings, the voice of Théoden was provided by Philip Stone. Théoden also appears in Rankin/Bass's attempt to complete the story left unfinished by Bakshi in their television adaptation of The Return of the King, but does not speak; his death is narrated by John Huston as Gandalf.

In the 1981 BBC Radio 4 version of The Lord of the Rings , Théoden's death is described in song rather than dramatised conventionally, which tends to lessen its impact. In this adaption he is voiced by Jack May of The Archers fame.

Peter Jackson's The Two Towers (2002) film deviates from Tolkien's story by having Théoden (played by Bernard Hill) actually possessed by Saruman rather than simply deceived by Gríma. He then goes to Helm's Deep to take his people to safety rather than to make a stand against the enemy. In Peter Jackson's The Return of the King (2003), Théoden is aware of Éowyn's presence at his death, whereas in the book he says his farewells to Merry and does not know that Éowyn is also there.

Éowyn (Third Age 2995 – Fourth Age ?), the Lady of Rohan, was also known as the Lady of the Shield-arm, the White Lady of Rohan1, and Lady of Ithilien. She was a member of the House of Eorl and the niece of King Théoden of Rohan. She was the daughter of Théoden sister, Théodwyn, and Éomund. Her brother was Éomer Éadig.

History
Following the Battle of the Hornburg, Éowyn was left to care for Meduseld while Théoden and Éomer led the remaining Rohirrim to save Minas Tirith. King Théoden in fact named her ruler of Rohan in his and Éomer's absence when the Doorward Háma recommended that one of "The House of Eorl" should rule. (As Théoden first only thought of male members, and he and Éomer were the last males of the House, but Háma reminds them of Éowyn, who is "fearless" and that "all love her".) Frustrated by unrequited love for Aragorn and longing for the glory of battle, she disguised herself as a man, and under the alias of Dernhelm, traveled with the Riders of Rohan, carrying with her Merry, who was also ordered to remain.

During the battle of Pelennor Fields she fought by King Théoden, and when he was injured during combat with the Witch-king of Angmar, she and Merry scrambled to help him. Confronting the Witch-king, who boasted that "no living man may hinder me," she removed her helmet, exposing her long blond hair and declaring,

<blockquote>"No living man am I! You look upon a woman."</blockquote>

Just as MacDuff disconcerted Macbeth by revealing he was not "of woman born", Lady Éowyn found the loophole in the 1,000-year-old prophecy by Glorfindel, fulfilling that the Witch-king would not be slain by a man. However, the Witch-king actually recited the prophecy incorrectly: he said that "no living man may hinder me," though the prophecy actually said that "Not by the hand of Man will he fall." Glorfindel's prophesy, unlike his own version, implies that the Witch-king will eventually fall, and the Witch-king likely overestimated his own power and believed he would never be defeated.

Lady Éowyn slew the Witch-king after Merry stabbed him behind the knee. Strictly speaking, Merry is also "no man," being a Hobbit. However, the stab behind the knee likely wouldn't have been fatal, even if it did break the bonds that "bent his unseen sinews to his will." The consensus seems to be that Merry's stab made the Witch-King vulnerable while Eowyn's slash actually resulted in death. She was granted the title "Lady of the Shield-arm" after the Battle in recognition of her triumph over the Witch-king.

Lady Éowyn was severely injured in this fight, and because of the poisonous effect of the Nazgûl, she faced near-certain death; however, she was treated in time by Aragorn during his brief rest in Minas Tirith. Since she didn't yet recover completely, she couldn't join Aragorn's army on their way to Mordor. However, while recuperating in the Houses of Healing, she met Faramir, with whom she fell in love. After the demise of Sauron, the happily wed couple settled in Ithilien, of which Faramir was made the ruling Prince. Éowyn was not known as the Princess of Ithilien, rather as the Lady of Ithilien. They had at least one son (likely Elboron), and their grandson was Barahir, who wrote The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the Fourth Age. The date of Éowyn's death is nowhere recorded.

Etymology
Éowyn means "Horse-lover" in Anglo-Saxon, the language Tolkien used to represent Rohirric. The name Éowyn comes from an old Welsh name, Øwyn. It has been slightly altered to sound like "A-O-win".

Pronounciation
The first syllable of Lady Éowyn's name sounds like "eh-ah," with the "ah" just barely pronounced. As in Scandinavian, the y in the second syllable is the same sound as the German letter ü or the French u. The actors in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings consistently pronounce her name as well as the names of Éomer and Théoden in a manner inconsistent with most reconstructions of Old English pronunciation.

Portrayal in Adaptations
In Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings Éowyn is briefly seen, but has no major speaking parts.

In The Return of the King Éowyn is voiced by Nellie Bellflower.

In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, Éowyn is portrayed by Miranda Otto. Jackson's adaptation shows two different explanations for Éowyn's injuries after fighting the Witch-king. In the Theatrical Release, her wounds are less severe than in the novel; she is conscious but hurt, as opposed to unconscious. In the extended scenes of the Extended Edition, she is near death: her brother finds her and grieves, and later we see her being healed in the Houses of Healing, where she shares a tender moment with Faramir.
Notes
1. Éowyn was known as "Lady of Rohan" in Rohan, but as "White Lady of Rohan" in Ithilien (due to her pale complexion).

Éomer was the eighteenth King of Rohan, and first of the Third Line. His name is likely derived from the Anglo-Saxon words "eoh" ("war-horse"), and possibly "mēre", ("grand, excellent, famous"). In a note written well after the initial publication of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien gave Éomer's height as 6 feet 6 inches tall ("of like height with Aragorn").

Éomer, of the House of Eorl, was the son of Théodwyn, sister of King Théoden of Rohan, and Éomund, a Chief Marshal of the Riddermark. He had a sister Éowyn. After they were orphaned Théoden adopted them as his own children.

He was tall, strong and possessed of great passion and also was considered a valiant and splendid warrior and a discerning and descent man. Eomer became a great, wise and skilled warrior and rider.

Éomer was third Marshal of the Riddermark, and was a strong leader of Men. His Éored hunted down the Uruk-hai that had taken Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took as they camped near Fangorn Forest, slaying them all. He never saw the Hobbits, as they fled during the battle. Afterwards he met Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas in the plains of Rohan, and he gave them two horses.

Éomer returned to Edoras, and reported on meeting the Ranger and friends. However, he was arrested after threatening Gríma Wormtongue because of his advances on Éomer's sister.

He was set free when Théoden recovered from the influence of Saruman the White, and was with his king at the Battle of the Hornburg, where he and his éored drove the Orcs and Dunlendings of Saruman into the walls of the Hornburg and in the Huorn forest, where they were killed.

Afterwards he rode with Théoden, Aragorn, and Gandalf to Isengard, where they confronted a trapped Saruman. Éomer rode with his king to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and fought bravely for Rohan and Gondor.

In the year 3019 at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields Théoden was killed, and Éomer became his successor. He stayed long behind in Minas Tirith to help Aragorn rebuild his kingdom, before returning home to be crowned king himself.

Éomer renewed the Oath of Eorl for Aragorn after Aragorn had been crowned King Elessar of the Reunited Kingdom, and Éomer had been crowned King of Rohan, swearing everlasting friendship between Rohan and Gondor (and legalizing Cirion's grant of Calenardhon to the Éothéod.)

He became known as Éomer Éadig, or "the Blessed", because during his reign Rohan recovered from the hurts of the War and became a rich and fruitful land again.

Éomer had met Princess Lothíriel, daughter of Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth during his stay in Gondor, and they were wed. She bore him a son Elfwine the Fair, who succeeded his father as the King of Rohan, after Éomer's death in the year Fourth Age 63.

Éomer's sword was called Gúthwinë (Old English battle-friend).

Portrayal in Adaptations
In Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings Éomer is pictured in the film and is crucial to the plot, but does not have any lines.

In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings Éomer is portrayed by New Zealand actor Karl Urban.

In both Ralph Bakshi's animated film and the Peter Jackson's movie trilogy, Éomer is an outcast and renegade until he arrives at Helm's Deep, summoned by Gandalf. In this sense, his character has been combined with the character of Erkenbrand, who is the one that Gandalf returns to Helm's Deep with in the book.

In the Peter Jackson's films, Éomer is explicitly exiled by Gríma before meeting Aragorn (which the animated film only hints at). He is more prominent in the book than in these films, since they focus on Théoden and Éowyn more.

Théodred (T.A. 2978-3019) was the only son and heir of King Théoden of Rohan. His mother, Elfhild, died in childbirth.

Théodred's name is probably taken from the Anglo-Saxon words "þeod" ("folk", "people", "nation") and "ræd" ("counsel").

Théodred was slain in the First Battle of the Fords of Isen, making his cousin, Éomer, heir to the throne of Rohan.

Little else is known about Théodred, except that he loved Éomer like a brother, and the only person he loved more than Éomer was his father, Théoden.

----

In Peter Jackson's The Two Towers, the death of Théodred is a major event early in the movie, whereas, in the book, it has all happened by the time we come to Rohan.
He became the second Prince of Ithilien and the Steward of Gondor after the death of his father in Fourth Age 82. Elboron may mean 'Enduring Star'. From el ('star') and boron ('long-lasting, enduring')

Barahir.mp3
The grandson of Steward Faramir and Éowyn of Rohan, who is recorded as having written The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, at some point during the second century of the Fourth Age. His work survived in abbreviated form in the Thain's Book, and hence ultimately came to form part of Appendix A to The Lord of the Rings.

Except for his grandparents Faramir and Éowyn, the details of Barahir's descent are uncertain. In The Heirs of Elendil (the ultimate basis for much of Appendix A), there is a single mention of a son of Faramir - apparently his only child - named Elboron. It isn't completely clear whether Tolkien meant this character to stand, but it seems reasonable to speculate that this Elboron was Barahir's father. This would in turn presumably see Barahir inheriting the titles of Steward of Gondor and Prince of Ithilien, though it should be emphasised that none of this is explicitly stated by Tolkien. (The Heirs of Elendil appears in The Peoples of Middle-earth, volume 12 of The History of Middle-earth).

Imrahil.mp3
Imrahil was the twenty-second Prince of Dol Amroth. He had two older sisters, Ivriniel and Finduilas.

During the War of the Ring, on March 9, 3019, Prince Imrahil led a company of Swan Knights and 700 men at arms to Minas Tirith to help defend the City. Prince Imrahil led the sortie that rode to the aid of Faramir and the rear-guard who were retreating from Osgiliath when the forces of Sauron overran the Pelennor Fields on March 13. Gandalf rode with them, and the Winged Nazgûl fled before him. The Knights of Dol Amroth rescued Faramir from the Southrons. Faramir was poisoned, and Imrahil carried his nephew back to the City on his horse. Gandalf then took command of the besieged city and Prince Imrahil assisted him, because Denethor in his madness retreated to the White Tower with his dying son, and forgot about the city.

While paying his respect to the procession bearing the body of King Théoden of Rohan at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields on March 15, Imrahil noticed that the Rohirrim also bore the body of Éowyn. He perceived that she was still alive and he sent a man to the City for help.

Éomer and his Riders were outnumbered, but Imrahil then rode into battle, and he came to their aid. Shortly after, Aragorn arrived in the black ships of the Corsairs, and the tide of the battle was turned. After the Pelennor fields had been cleared, Aragorn, Éomer and Imrahil rode to the Gate of Minas Tirith.

Imrahil recognized that Aragorn was the rightful King, but he agreed that it was wise for Aragorn to wait to enter the city, because Imrahil knew his brother-in-law Denethor was strong-willed and proud. When Imrahil learned that Denethor was dead and Faramir dying, he suggested that Aragorn be summoned, remembering that the Kings of old were great healers. Aragorn came at Gandalf's request to heal the wounded Faramir, Éowyn and Merry, but he declared that Prince Imrahil should rule the City until Faramir awoke, in effect granting Imrahil the position of Steward.

During the debate of the Captains of the West, Gandalf proposed that they march to the Black Gate to distract Sauron's attention from Frodo the Ring-bearer. Imrahil said that he would follow his liege Aragorn, but since Minas Tirith was under his command the Prince advised that some should remain to defend the City. In the end it was decided that an army of 7,000 would ride forth. Imrahil laughed and said:
<blockquote>"Surely this is the greatest jest in all the history of Gondor: that we should ride with seven thousands, scarce as many as the vanguard of its army in the days of its power, to assail the mountains and the impenetrable gate of the Black Land! So might a child threaten a mail-clad knight with a bow of string and green willow!" (The Return of the King: "The Last Debate")</blockquote>

The Host of the West left Minas Tirith on March 18. Bypassing Minas Morgul and marching north, the heralds announced the coming of King Elessar at Imrahil's advice. When Sauron's forces emerged from the Black Gate on March 25, Imrahil stood on the front line with his men. They fought the Battle of the Morannon (Black Gate) until the One Ring was destroyed.

Prince Imrahil was present at the celebrations of the field of Cormallen, and the coronation of Aragorn as King Elessar, and rode with the funeral procession of King Théoden to Rohan, remaining in Edoras after the King's burial on August 10. Imrahil and Éomer became great friends, and in T.A. 3021 Éomer wed Imrahil's daughter Lothíriel.

After the War of the Ring, Prince Imrahil and his nephew Prince Faramir were King Elessar's chief commanders. Imrahil was also part of the Great Council of Gondor, and remained an advisor of the King.

Following is one little-known quote at the Last Debate that Tolkien did not put in the final version of Lord of the Rings:

:“…Than what is the use of this Ring?” said Imrahil
:“Victory,” said Hurin. “At least we should have won the war, and not this foul lord of Mordor.”
:“So might many a brave knight of the Mark or the Realm speak,” said Imrahil. “But surely more wisdom is required of lords in council. Victory is in itself worthless. Unless Gondor stands for some good, then let it not stand at all; and if Mordor doth not stand for some evil that we will not brook in Mordor or out of it, then let it triumph.”

Prince Imrahil died in the year 34 of the Fourth Age, and was succeed by his eldest son Elphir, who continued the line of Princes.
