This is just a minor detail, but it struck me as pretty strange (and somewhat out of context) while reading this article. It says that Morgoth "lusted after Lúthien". Now, the Silmarillion simply says that he "conceived in his mind an evil lust" ("lust" doesn't have the modern sexual meaning in Tolkien's writings, it simply means a wish, ambition or desire). Compare the passage in the Book of Lost Tales: "his dark mind pondered some evil", and in the Quenta (The Shaping of Middle Earth): "he plotted foul evil within his heart". In my opinion, the sentence of the article is making too many assumptions here.95.22.115.34
It seems like this article has seen a great deal of increased activity lately. Much of it has either been irrelevant to Morgoth, misinformation, poorly written, and/or plainly false. I know everyone does what they can patrolling recent changes, but if some extra attention could be devoted to keeping an eye on this article for a bit, I'd appreciate it. I think it goes without saying this article is centric enough to the mythos that it should be of the upmost quality. Thanks. -Smog 06:24, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
I'm kind of unsure about this section because it has many characters that appear only in earlier writings e.g. Lungorthin etc. and are not mentioned again, mixed in with other characters that also appeared earlier but remained in later iterations e.g. Glaurung etc.. Tevildo is the early conception of what would become the character Sauron but Sauron is also in the list so is it implying these two are wholly different characters? I think it would be just confusing for someone who has only read The Silmarillion and wondering where all these characters are in his/her book. Additionally older concepts should really be in its own section (ovotl) which the article lacks. Therefore I'm wondering if there should be some criteria for what to include in something like this. Gaetano 15:03, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

:As far as I recall, the 2017 Beren and Luthien, edited by Christopher Tolkien (R.I.P.), established Tevildo as a character different than that of Sauron (Tevildo was the precursor of Thu/Tuvon, who evolved into Sauron) They also have their own separate articles here. If you think it's not good to mix characters from the early layouts of the Silmarillion with those of the finished book, perhaps we can make some sort of criteria to include only those from the final versions. --LordoftheEarth 15:09, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Celebrant (translated as Silverlode) was a stream rising in the eastern Misty Mountains from the Mirrormere in the Dimrill Dale. It then ran through Lothlórien where it was met by the Nimrodel river, and emptied into the Anduin.

History
In 2994 an army of orcs came up the Silverlode and wiped out the colony of Dwarves dwelling in Moria.
The Fellowship of the Ring followed this river when they travelled from Moria to Lothlórien.

Etymology
Celebrant is a Sindarin name, consisting of celeb, "silver" and rant, "course".

The element lode in Silverlode means "course, water-channel".

These names were also a translation of Kibil-nâla in Khuzdul, the language of Dwarves. An earlier name is also given as Zigilnâd.
At the Ford Frodo, poisoned by a Morgul-wound, made his stand, and defied the Lord of the Nazgûl. This lured the Ringwraiths into the Bruinen, and Elrond and Gandalf released a great flood, which took the form of horses made out of water due to Gandalf's magic.
The Baranduin was a river in Eriador. To the Hobbits of the Shire, the Brandywine (as they called it) was the boundary between the known and unknown, and even those who lived in Buckland on the immediate opposite shore were considered "peculiar".

History
Elendil's people dwelt about the course of the Baranduin.

After the realm of Arnor was broken up in 861, the river south of the Brandywine Bridge served as part of the border between Arthedain and Cardolan.

When the Shire was founded, the river was its eastern border. In 2340 Gorhendad Oldbuck crossed the river and founded Brandy Hall, and Baranduin now separated the Eastfarthing from Buckland.

Primula and Drogo Baggins, parents of Frodo, were lost along the river in a boating accident in 2980.

Course
Flowing out of Lake Evendim in northern Eriador, the river flowed eastward for about 60 miles before turning generally southward; after about another 120 miles it flowed through the easternmost reaches of the Shire, forming that land's eastern border, except for Buckland, which lies east of it. Its only major crossings in the Shire are the Brandywine Bridge (originally Bridge of Stonebows) on the East Road and the Bucklebury Ferry. The Girdley Island is just above the Brandywine Bridge.

Skirting the Old Forest to the south, the river then looped south-westward, crossing an old road at Sarn Ford and flowed to the north of the depopulated region of Minhiriath before flowing into the Sea to the north of the forested region of Eryn Vorn.

Tributaries
No tributares of the Baranduin are described except those near or in the Shire:
* The Water - central Shire, from the northwest
* The Stock-brook - arises in the Woody End
* River Shirebourn - rises in Green-Hill country, tributary is Thistle Brook
* Withywindle - from the Old Forest
* River Norbourn - in the Northfarthing

Etymology
The name Baranduin was Sindarin for "golden-brown river", from baran and duin.

The Hobbits of the Shire originally gave it the punning name Branda-nîn, meaning "border water" in original Hobbitish Westron. This was later punned again as Bralda-hîm meaning "heady ale" (referring to the colour of its water), which Tolkien renders into English as Brandywine.

The word Brandywine both resembles the original Elvish name Baranduin, and provides the Hobbitish meaning adequately.

The word brandywine was actually the archaic English word for brandy as imported from the Dutch brandewijn. David Salo noted that it represents a possible Old English *baernedwin, meaning "burned wine", which would resemble quite closely the original Elvish Baranduin, making Hobbitish Brandywine a legitimate corruption of S. Baranduin.
Sindarin - Anduin.mp3

Anduin (S, pron. [ˈanduɪn] as two syllables) was the river that crossed most of Middle-earth east of the Misty Mountains. Passing through many lands, it had received many names - Langflood by the ancestors of the Rohirrim, the Great River of Wilderland in the Westron of Rivendell and the Shire, and simply the Great River in Gondor. All these names are in recognition of the river's length.

It flowed from its source in the Grey and Misty Mountains to the Ethir Anduin in the Great Sea (Belegaer). The river had perhaps a total run of 1,388 miles It was always the frontier of the west-lands of Middle-earth.

Source
The Anduin began as two different streams near where the Misty Mountains met the Grey. These were called the Langwell and the Greylin by the Éothéod when they lived in the triangle of land formed by it. Their old capital Framsburg was built at the confluence of these streams where the Anduin proper began. The Langwell had its source in the Misty Mountains, close to Mount Gundabad, and the Greylin began in the westernmost heights of the Grey Mountains.

Course
The Anduin flowed parallel to the Misty Mountains in a broad vale which formed the western part of Rhovanion, lying between the mountains and Mirkwood. After passing Lothlórien, the river and mountains parted company, and the river flowed through the Brown Lands via the North and South Undeeps until it flowed past the Emyn Muil and the Argonath and entered Nen Hithoel through Sarn Gebir, a series of ferocious rapids. Thence it flowed over the Falls of Rauros, and past the Mouths of Entwash and the marshes known as the Wetwang. It then passed between the White Mountains and the Mountains of Shadow by the capital of Gondor, Osgiliath, before swinging past the harbour of Harlond close to the Rammas Echor, south of Minas Tirith. It flowed through the port of Pelargir, entering the Great Sea in the Bay of Belfalas in a broad delta known as the Mouths of Anduin.

Tributaries
In order from north to south: the Rhimdath (Rushdown), the Ninglor (Gladden) which joined at the marshes known as the Gladden Fields, the Celebrant (Silverlode), the River Limlight, the Onodló (Entwash), the Morgulduin, the Erui, the Sirith and the Poros. The first five had their sources in the Misty Mountains, the Morgulduin and (presumably) the Poros in the Ephel Dúath on the border of Mordor, and the rest in the White Mountains.

Crossing Points
The Old Forest Road which led from the High Pass into Mirkwood crossed the river at the Old Ford, to the south of Beorn's Halls. There used to be a bridge, this was fortified when Elendil crossed the river to go to war with Sauron, but it had been destroyed by the late Third Age. The only other bridge was in Osgiliath, but during the late Third Age, this was broken by forces of Mordor. The Ford of Carrock is mentioned during the War of the Ring.

Islands
The principal islands appear to have been Cair Andros, on the borders of Ithilien and Tol Brandir in Nen Hithoel. Carrock, in the north was where the Eagles deposited Thorin and Company. There was also an eyot, where the Fellowship rested during their travel between Lórien and Parth Galen.

Settlements
During the March of the Elves in the Time of the Trees, the Nandor left the Eldarin host when faced with the great heights of the Misty Mountains, and lived in the Vales of Anduin. Some of those people later left and became the Green-elves of Ossiriand, but Elves remained present even until the time of the War the Ring, strengthed by refugees from Beleriand (at the end of the First Age) and Eregion (during the Second).

Settlements in the Vale of Anduin during the Third Age included the Éothéod city of Framsburg, Rhosgobel, Beorn's Halls and the Stoor settlements near the Gladden Fields. It was in the Gladden Fields in the northern reaches of Anduin that Isildur was slain in 2 and the One Ring lost; and it was there, more than two millennia later, that Déagol found the Ring and Sméagol took it from him.

Once it had entered Gondor the river flowed past Osgiliath and Minas Tirith and then Pelargir, close to the sea. After the fall of Osgiliath the river effectively marks the eastern limit of Gondor's influence.

Etymology
Anduin is a Sindarin name meaning "long river" or "great river", composed of and + duin.
Whitwell was located on the Green Hills, not far from Tuckborough. Thain Paladin Took II, had a farm there.
Etymology
Whit is a shortening of "white", referring to the colour of the soil (presumably pertaining to chalk in the soil of the Green Hills).

David Salo suggests that the name means "white spring", representing an Old Hobbitish Hwitwielle.
Whitfurrows was a village or small town that lay in the Eastfarthing, on the East Road through the Shire, approximately midway between Frogmorton (about ten miles to the west) and the Brandywine Bridge (a similar distance to the east).
Whitfurrows appear to have been a centre or staging-post of some kind for the Shirriffs during the War of the Ring.

Etymology
David Salo suggests an etymology from possible Old Hobbitish Hwitfure meaning "white furrows".
Waymeet or Waymoot was a town in the Westfarthing of the Shire. The East Road, the main road through the Shire, ran through the town on its way to Michel Delving. Two smaller roads also led to Waymeet: one from Little Delving to the north and one from Tookland and the Southfarthing beyond. Where these roadways came together, a town had grown up, appropriately known as Waymeet.

History
In the War of the Ring, the ruffians who took over the Shire had a staging post or barracks in Waymeet, and it was from here that Sharkey's Men set out for the Battle of Bywater, in which they were soundly defeated by the Shire-hobbits.

Etymology
The name refers to the village being at the meeting of three ways.

The name Waymeet is a modernised spelling of the older form, Waymoot, which was the spelling preferred by Tolkien in early drafts of The Return of the King. Though he ultimately modernised the name within the book itself, the map of the Shire in the prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring was never corrected, and still carries the older spelling of the name. It was the home of several families, specifically Gamwich (later Gammidge) and Roper families.

Wiseman Gamwich came to Tighfield about two hundred years before the War of the Ring, and Wiseman's son Hob Gammidge is recorded as a roper, one of a long line of Tighfield rope-makers.

Hob's son Hobson, and in turn his son Andwise, were said to have practised their craft in a rope-walk (that is, a rope-maker's yard) for many years.

Hob's grandson was Hamfast Gamgee, Sam's father, who left Tighfield for Hobbiton, to start a new life as a gardener.

Etymology
Tighfield's name is associated with the tradition of rope-making there and contains an old word for "rope" (see English "tie", whose spelling was assimilated to verb "tie"). It was the site of a rope-maker's yard, also called "rope-walk" because the ropes were stretched out in long lines over trestles at intervals.

Tolkien notes the modern place-name elements tigh, teigh, tye, tey which are unrelated; they mean "an enclosed piece of land" and do not occur as the first element in a compound.

Tolkien also noted that the term "rope-walk" in the text has confused several of his translators, to the point of imagining rope bridges.
Scary was a small settlement that lay in the hilly region of caves and rock holes that formed the northern parts of the Eastfarthing, which also gave its name to the surrounding stony hills.

From among the rocky lands around Scary much of the Shire's stone was quarried.

During the War of the Ring, the Scary quarries were used by Sharkey's Men to store their loot, and after Sharkey was defeated, much of this was recovered by the Shire-hobbits.

Etymology
Tolkien notes that the name was meaningless in Hobbitish of the War of the Ring. However he notes that since it was in a rocky region and of a stone-quarry, it may be supposed to contain English dialectal scar, "rocky cliff".

Based on the above, David Salo has suggested that Scary represents a speculative Old English *Skerig "precipitous (place)". Salo also noted that the form of this dialectal word, specifically the existence of sk-, reveals a Norse origin.

Tom Shippey suggests an etymology from Old English scearu "a boundary", marking the Shire's northern boundary; the retaining (or reversal) of /sk/ might reflect the peculiarity of Northern English (in such names as Skipton, Scarborough).
Quarry was a location in the northern Eastfarthing, to the south of the hills of Scary and between Scary and Brandywine,

Quarry could have been simply a stone-quarry but possibly it could also have been a small Hobbit settlement or a village as well.

Etymology
The word quarry is derived from Latin quarreria through French.

David Salo noted that the usage of a Latin-French word as a place-name is peculiar, in contrast to all other placenames which have Old English and/or Celtic etymologies; he suggests that the name perhaps represents a late Westron word, and not an original Hobbitish place-name.
Pincup was a small village of the Shire. It lay in the northern corner of the Southfarthing, some miles south of the Three-Farthing Stone, in that hilly part of the Shire known as the Green Hill Country. It seems to have been built in the southern slopes of the Green Hills, and was reached by only a single road, apparently leading from the larger settlement of Longbottom to the south.

Etymology
Concerning the origin of Pincup's name, the first element is pinnuc or pink, finch or sparrow, and the second element is hop, recess, retreat.
