Summary
See :Image:J.R.R. Tolkien - Bilbo comes to the Huts of the Raft-elves (I).jpg. Not used in the original impression of The Hobbit, 1937, which included no coloured illustrations, this painting appeared in the second English impression of the same year. It was the only one of the five submitted that was not used in the first American edition, 1938. In a letter written to the American publishers in March 1938 J. R. R. Tolkien, while approving their use of 'the Eagle picture' (no. :Image:J.R.R. Tolkien - Bilbo woke with the early sun in his eyes.jpg, omitted from the first English impression to contain coloured illustrations), said that he was sorry that they had not selected 'the River-picture, in which on the whole the amateur artist caught the imagined scene most closely'. In the second English impression the picture carried the printed caption 'The dark river opened suddenly wide' (from Chapter 9, Barrels out of Bond). The painting was reproduced in The J. R. R. Tolkien Calendars 1972 and 1974 and in The Hobbit Calendar 1976.
The Attack on Dol Guldur was an expedition launched by the White Council in 2941 against the fortress of Dol Guldur in southern Mirkwood.

History
Prelude
When Sauron re-emerged, he established Dol Guldur on Amon Lanc after 1000. His corrupting shadow was only known as the "Necromancer", and as a result Thranduil led his people away. The Council of the Wise long feared the Necromancer might indeed be Sauron; Gandalf himself had entered Dol Guldur a couple of times, finally confirming that Sauron was its master. At first Saruman opposed the idea of an attack as he was searching for the One Ring in the area by then, but later, fearing that Sauron was also looking of the Ring, he finally agreed to an attack in 2941.

The Battle
Gandalf carefully planned the attack to occur at the same time as the Quest of Erebor, knowing that Sauron and Smaug could not assist each other.fact After leaving Thorin and Company at the outskirts of Mirkwood, he joined the White Council and they marched against the great fortress.

Of the actual battle not much can be said (if this was simply a duel between great powers, or if it involved the use of armies of any kind). Thanks to the devices of Saruman, the Wise, Sauron was driven out from Dol Guldur, however Sauron, having already made his plans, fled to his ancient realm of Mordor.

Aftermath
With victory theirs, Gandalf immediately left for Erebor, where he would take part in the Battle of Five Armies. After these events, Gandalf and Elrond dicussed their victories and agreed that it would be better if the Necromancer were banished from the world altogether.

However Dol Guldur was not destroyed; it remained standing, staffed by the lieutenant of Barad-dûr, and later Khamûl. It was not before the War of the Ring when the fortress was finally destroyed.

Portrayal in adaptations
2014: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies:
:The Attack on Dol Guldur appears in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies as one of the main plot lines. After Gandalf was defeated and captured by Sauron in the previous film, the White Council (Galadriel, Saruman, Elrond and Radagast) come to his aid and rescue Gandalf from Sauron and the Nazgûl.
Image Upload
Hi,

I was trying to upload better quality versions of some pictures, namely from Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring and Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings (of which I recently acquired a Blu-ray copy of), but I found no upload option anywhere. Is it some limitation for being a new user or am I missing the upload option? Thanks in advance. Alexrd 12:00, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

:Yes, it is limited for new users. You will need to make a certain number of edits before you can upload. -- 06:35, 25 March 2018 (UTC)
::That explains it then. Thanks. Alexrd 16:23, 25 March 2018 (UTC)
:Hi again, quick question. When I'm uploading a better version of a picture, do I need to tag it for deletion so that the old versions can be removed later or it simply doesn't matter? Alexrd 15:44, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

:::On an image page you can upload a new version of an image. The original one will be just be overwritten, and wherever it is used on the wiki it will also be overwritten. -- 15:45, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
::::Yes, I was refering to the old versions listed at the bottom, once the new one is uploaded. Alexrd 15:48, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

In it, Tolkien outlines the various calendar systems used in Middle-earth. These include the Shire Calendar, the Calendar of Imladris (or Reckoning of Rivendell), and the Númenorean systems of the King's Reckoning and the Stewards' Reckoning.

Special prominence is given to the Shire Calendar, for which a complete table of the days and months of the year is provided.

This Appendix also gives the names of the seasons, months, and days of the week in Quenya and Sindarin and the names of the months and days of the week according to the Shire Calendar.

Rivendell, or Imladris, was an Elven town in the Misty Mountains on the eastern edge of Eriador. Because of its location, it was called "The Last Homely House East of the Sea" from the point of view of a traveller going to the Misty Mountains and Wilderland; and also the First Homely House from the point of view of someone coming from these lands to the civilised lands of Eriador to the west.

It was established by Elrond in 1697 as a refuge from Sauron after the fall of Eregion. It remained Elrond's seat throughout the remainder of the Second Age and until the end of the Third Age, when he took the White Ship for Valinor. Rivendell had a strong alliance with the Kings of Arnor and after the fall of Arthedain it became a refuge for the Rangers of the North and the heirs of Isildur. Besides Elrond himself, notable Elves who lived there included Arwen and Glorfindel.

Rivendell was located at the edge of a narrow gorge of the Bruinen River, but well hidden in the moorlands and foothills of the Misty Mountains.

History
Founding
During the War of the Elves and Sauron, and as Sauron was moving against Eriador, Elrond led an army of Elves of Lindon to the region. They arrived late but were joined by a detachment out of Eregion led by Celeborn. Despite this, Sauron's armies overwhelmed the Elves, and Elrond was unable to reach Eregion. Forced northward toward the headwaters of Bruinen, Elrond established a stronghold.

This became a refuge for those seeking shelter from Sauron's onslaught in Eriador, and Elrond's and Celeborn's Elves were soon joined by many fleeing the Sack of Eregion. More came as Sauron ravaged Eriador on his march toward Lindon. By 1700, Sauron had overrun all of Eriador and Imladris was besieged. The siege ended when Gil-galad's forces, strengthened by the armament sent by Tar-Minastir, routed Sauron's armies and drove him out of Eriador.

A Council held at that time made Elrond Gil-galad's vice-regent in Eriador, and Imladris his seat. Gil-galad bestowed Vilya upon Elrond in secret. Aided by the power of the Elven ring, Elrond made Imladris one of the chief seats of Elvish strength in the west in the latter part of the Second Age. Imladris remained an Elvish stronghold in Eriador to the end of the Second Age and into the Third.

Last Alliance
At the end of the Second Age, Elendil and Gil-galad formed the Last Alliance of Elves and Men to challenge Sauron, and their host halted for a while at Imladris before crossing the Misty Mountains. Isildur's wife and his youngest son, Valandil, were in Imladris at that time, and Isildur was journeying back to them after Sauron's defeat when he was ambushed at the Gladden Fields. After receiving the shards of Narsil, Valandil took up his role as King of Arnor and left Imladris for Annúminas.

Third Age
After the fall of Gil-galad, Elrond remained in Imladris. During the Third Age it was a refuge and sanctuary; many Elves gathered there, and it was the chief dwelling of the High Elves in Eriador, except the Elves of Lindon, but also wise and powerful people of all the races. The heirs of Isildur were also harboured there due to their kinship with Elrond, as descendants of his brother Elros. Rivendell maintained this relationship with the North Kingdom throughout the Third Age, and Elrond and his people remained steadfast allies to the heirs of Isildur. Situated on the western slopes of the Misty Mountains, Imladris was near Arnor's eastern province of Rhudaur, which became independent during the disintegration of the North Kingdom in 861.

Danger came to Eriador around 1300 when the witch-kingdom of Angmar was established in the north-east beyond the Ettenmoors. It was late in the reign of Arveleg I that Rivendell was besieged by Angmar. After an incursion by Angmar into Eriador in 1409, the Elves of Rivendell joined those of Lindon in subduing the power of the Witch-king for many years.

After the end of the North-kingdom in 1975 Aranarth, the first Chieftain of the Dúnedain, had his son fostered in Rivendell, as were all subsequent sons of the chieftains. The heirlooms and treasures of the house of Isildur, including the shards of Narsil, were also kept there after Arvedui's death. Among these were also some of the few remaining documents containing the history of Númenor.

There was traffic across the Misty Mountains in the Third Age between Imladris and Lothlórien, for Elrond's wife was Celebrían, daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn.

In the Quest of Erebor, Bilbo Baggins stopped off at Rivendell with the Dwarves on the way to the Lonely Mountain and also on the way back to the Shire with Gandalf. Bilbo retired there after his 111th birthday, writing his memoir There and Back Again.

War of the Ring
Years later, Frodo Baggins and his companions journeyed to Rivendell, where they met Bilbo. Several other Elves, Dwarves and Men had also arrived at Rivendell on separate errands; at the Council of Elrond they learned that all of their errands were related to the fate of the One Ring, and they had to decide what to do about it. In the end, the Hobbits influenced the decision.

Geography
Pine-trees grew on the top of the valley, and there was a "steep zig-zag path" to the valley bottom. The vegetation in the valley bottom was mostly oak and beech.

Etymology
Rivendell ("cloven-dell") is the Common Speech translation of the Sindarin name Imladris ("deep dale of the cleft"). An alternative (or complementary) etymology, gives Rivendell as the Anglicised version of the Westron name Karningul (itself a translation of Imladris).

The name Imladris is also glossed as "Canyon of the Cleft" and "flat-floored valley of the Cleft".) could have been Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, which Tolkien visited in 1911:

In 1936, Rayner Unwin was given the manuscript of The Hobbit and was paid a sixpence to report back on it to his father. His report was favourable, and the company published the book. Rayner Unwin would later lead the company himself, until his retirement in 1985.

In 10 July 1990 the company was bought by HarperCollins and ceased to exist as a company in the United Kingdom, but continued separately in Australia and New Zealand.

Life
Lee had a long history with Tolkien's fiction; he read The Hobbit after leaving the Royal Air Force in 1945, and since The Fellowship of the Ring came out, he read all Tolkien's books once a year. Lee also had the experience of actually meeting Tolkien in person (making him the only individual involved in the film trilogies to do so):

Lee always envisioned himself as being Gandalf, so when he read that Peter Jackson would be adapting his bedside book, he immediately called his agent.

Jackson
Although he realized he was too old to play Gandalf, he read the part. He did not get it, but was called back as Saruman instead. He had never been in a movie with the actual Gandalf, Sir Ian McKellen, but the two quickly became friends, being the oldest actors on the set (though Lee was 17 years older). When McKellen was cast as Gandalf, Lee was 78 years old and McKellen was 61.

Lee shot most of his scenes in Wellington, in the main studio, but also shot one scene in Wellington's national park. He visited New Zealand four times, the longest time being ten weeks. He later did some post-synching in London.

While jet-lagged, Lee broke his hand smashing it against a wall. Several shots of him in the finished films show him carefully hiding this bandaged left hand.

Other projects
Known for his booming voice, Christopher Lee has sung operas, and performed with the Tolkien Ensemble on their CDs At Dawn in Rivendell and Leaving Rivendell. He sang the role of Treebeard, as well as reciting numerous other poems.

Lee has recounted his life and his connections with Tolkien's work in the foreword to Chris Smith's The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare, and in chapter 74, titled "Spellbinder", of his autobiography, Lord of Misrule.

Lee agreed to reprise his role as Saruman for The Hobbit (film series) on the condition that he did not have to fly out to New Zealand to be filmed.
Quotations
{{Blockquote|What Professor Tolkien achieved is unique in the literature of my lifetime. Indeed, in my opinion, he had reached the peak of literary invention of all time. {{Blockquote|It's just going to be...I'm trying to think of the right word - without making it sound like the usual fashionable superlative. I think it will create film history.
{{Blockquote|I did meet him [Tolkien], very briefly, in the Fifties. It was in a pub that he used to go to in Oxford, called the Eagle and Child. I had already started reading the books and thought, "This man has created a unique form of literature - one of the great works of all time." While I was filming The Lord of the Rings, I thought about what he would have thought all the time, and hope he would have approved. American actor Viggo Peter Mortensen, Jr. (born 1958) played Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings film series. He was a last-minute replacement for Stuart Townsend, as director Peter Jackson did not believe Townsend looked old enough to play the part convincingly. Mortensen was considering turning down the part, but his son, who loved the books, encouraged him to take the role. His son, Henry Mortenson, also appears as a child of Rohan in The Two Towers and as a soldier extra in The Return of the King.
