The North-South Road, also known as the Great Road and Royal Road, was a major road in the Westlands built by the Númenóreans from the Second Age; it linked the northern kingdom of Arnor with the southern kingdom of Gondor.
Route
It originally ran from Fornost Erain in the far north, southward for hundreds of leagues through Eriador passing by Bree (where it crossed the East-West Road) and through Andrath between the Barrow-downs and the South Downs and crossed the former Cardolan and Minhiriath. Most of this road had fallen into ruins after the Fall of Fornost and the desolation of Eriador. The patch of the North Road around the Bree-land was known as the Greenway because of its disuse. It then crossed Tharbad on the Gwathló, where it crossed the river to traverse Enedwaith. From then on, the North Road became the Old South Road.

Arching slightly towards the Misty Mountains, it went through the Gap of Rohan (via the Fords of Isen) and then it was known as the Great West Road. After two miles it bent sharply to the south-east to meet the Deeping-road and again bent to the east and Edoras. It passed across Calenardhon/Rohan parallel to the White Mountains and eventually Anorien. It passed near Minas Anor and then, the portion known in Minas Tirith as South Road, passed over Erui at the Crossings of Erui, and reached Pelargir.

Other versions of the legendarium
Only parts of the North-South Road are taken in consideration in the narrative of The Lord of the Rings; the route is partially seen in the original General Map of Middle-earth (and then in Pauline Baynes's A Map of Middle-earth). In those earlier maps, the portion of the road from Enedwaith to Rohan is not seen, suggesting that the road was abandoned or ruined after contact and traffic was diminished.

The name Great Road in the Appendices refers to the East Road. Confusingly, the name Great Road in the Unfinished Tales refers to the North-South Road, which appears as a whole in the map accompanying the book. Christopher Tolkien extrapolated the course between Enedwaith and Rohan, to restore it on the new map.

Middle-earth Role Playing (MERP) was a subset of the Rolemaster role-playing game rules set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth and published by Iron Crown Enterprises.

Description
The system was somewhat like Dungeons & Dragons with character classes and levels. Classes available included Animist (Cleric), Bard, Mage, Ranger, Scout (Thief) and Warrior (Fighter). The system departed in having a highly detailed combat and magic system.

In the MERP game system, attributes are rating between 0 and 100, and skills can surpass these limits (under 0 or over 100). An attack roll would consist of a percentile roll + skill rating + attribute rating - target's dodge rating. This result was looked up on a table against the victim's armor type (leather/plate). Most hits in combat would cause a 'critical' which would be rolled and looked up on separate tables. For some, these criticals are quite entertaining due to their variety and creativeness, but for others the task of adding and subtracting high numbers and then consulting a table is the height of roll-playing, not role-playing.

Spell casters had the unique advantage in MERP that they learned lists of 10 spells (1 per level) as a unit. Once a character learned the Healing list, he would be able to cast increasingly better healing spells as his level increased.

The setting for this game predates the War of the Ring by around 1400 years (the majority of the modules were set in the years after the Great Plague, ca. Third Age 1640) and as such it represented a version of Middle-earth different to that seen in The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit.

Metal miniatures
Two different companies issued authorized figures for use with MERP. In 1985, Grenadier Models released their Lord of the Rings Middle Earth series. In 1987, the license was transferred to Mithril Miniatures, which still produces Middle-earth metal miniatures (although post-ICE figures have no reference to MERP).
This supplement draws adventurers into the mysterious Suza Sumar, a rainforest thriving in desert sands. The Honnin, a hidden people related to the Woses of the Ered Nimrais, dwell between the boles of the great trees, harvesting the forest's bounties and zealously guarding their secrecy. Despite their caution, the Dark Lord's schemes soon may boil out of the Forest of Tears to overrun all of Far Harad.

Explore the sunspeckled twilight beneath the boughs of the Forest of Tears. Amidst the songs of brilliantly feathered birds, a small people struggles with its insane gods, fighting to keep the traditions of its age-old society intact. Obsessed with secrecy, the Honnin are troubled by a cannibalistic spirit who preys on its worshippers and a Tavari seduced by Sauron's promises of power. These dangers threaten visitors to the mysterious Forest of Tears.

This supplement presents the beautiful wild lands at the edge of the Blue Mountains, the barrier between the Lhûn River valley and the Elven Kingdom of Lindon. Numeriador has remained unthreatened by the forces of darkness for millennia. The Witch-king of Angmar knows the region however, and the open terrain holds more danger than its peaceful appearance betrays.

Meet intrepid rivermen, banished Dúnedain, reclusive Elves, and the shrewd Dwarves of the Nan-i-Naugrim while roaming Numeriador's untouched scenery. Roaring waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, and deep forest whose shadows hold beasts and monsters surround the isolated hamlets and farmsteads where only the fearless and hardy dare dwell. Far from the comforts of civilization, travelers face marauding bandits, hungry Trolls, and the spies of the Witch-king throughout this frontier.

ROGUES of the Borderlands contains:

*A TWO-PAGE FULL-COLOR MAP: depicting the region of Numeriador
*THREE EXCITING ADVENTURES: seek legendary gold and the mystery behind a cabin haunt in "The Legend of the Ice Caves"; capture the pranksters whose jokes are lethal rather than funny in "No Sense of Humor"; and discover the sinister secret behind the animated corpse that walks "The Celeglin Barrows"
*THREE ADDITIONAL SCENARIOS: brief outlines for a clash with bandits, the rescue of a newly hatched Great Eagle, and a descent into the ruined and flooded halls of Belegost
*DETAILED LAYOUTS: of all adventure sites
*STATISTICS: for all the hunters, trappers, and beasts of Numeriador, all NPCs, monsters and Círdan the Shipwright

In January 1992, Carl F. Hostetter remarked that this supplement includes "a remarkably detailed introduction to the languages" invented by [[J.R.R. Minas Tirith is a supplement (in the Cities of Middle-earth-series) for Middle-earth Role Playing, 1st Edition. In MERP 2nd ed., this module was replaced by Minas Tirith (2nd ed).

For use with this supplement, Mithril Miniatures released a set of metal miniatures (M195 - M204 Minas Tirith).

Cover/Jacket Text
Minas Tirith, the Guarded City, rises from the base of Mount Mindolluin. Capital of Gondor, it is the preeminent symbol of the struggle against Sauron of Mordor. No other city in western Middle-earth offers greater hope for the defense of the Free Peoples.

Minas Tirith commands the wide gap between the White Mountains and the Mountains of Shadow that encircle the Dark Lord's homeland. Its seven walls and seven levels seem to grow out of the stone, as if carved by Giants. Each tier of the Royal City wraps around the rock and looms above the surrounding quarter, its ramparts glimmering white with each sunrise.

High atop the capital, on the uppermost level, the Tower of Ecthelion reaches skyward like a pearl-and-crystal spire. Amidst the storm spawned by the Lord of the Rings, this citadel is the last hold in Minas Tirith, an unparalleled bastion in an ominous time.

MINAS TIRITH features:

*A double sided 16" x 20" full-color mapsheet
*40 pages of floorplans and layouts
*Detailed descriptions of key locations in the city
*Complete overviews of Minas Tirith's seven levels, the Pelennor, and the port of Harlond
*Descriptions of Boromir, Faramir, Denethor, and other famous figures
Home of Legolas and Thranduil.

The palatial Halls of the Elven-king cut deep into a hill in northeastern Mirkwood. Facing southward, the main doors of this wondrous delving look onto a stone bridge that spans the swift-flowing Forest River. This strategic crossing joins the great Woodland Realm ruled by King Thranduil to the north with the haunted woods to the south.

Besides guarding the bridge, the fortified subterranean palace serves as both the capital to the Wood-elves and gateway into Northern Mirkwood. Here the Elven-king greets the rare travelers who journey westward. Few sojourn beyond the Halls, however, for the Woodland Realm remains an enchanted land shrouded in mystery and threatened by the dark forces spawned by the Lord of the Rings.

Calenhad: A Beacon of Gondor is a supplement (in the Fortress series) for Middle-earth Role Playing, 1st Edition.

Cover/Jacket Text
Located in the northern foothills of the Ered Nimrais, Calenhad is one in a chain of seven beacon-towers. Its watch-fire relays warning to Minas Tirith of any attack on Gondor's frontiers. Whether a Dunlending invasion from the west, an Orcish raid across the Anduin, or civil strife within Calenardhon, the tower's beacon is set ablaze.

Calenhad's elevated site on steep cliffs originally sported just a rude signal-platform. The structure's fire-cage, when set alight, warned nearby Gondorian settlements of incursions by Dunnish tribes. Centuries later, when Easterlings raided across the Anduin, a more formidable tower was built over the platform's ruins. As the Shadow in Mordor grew, the tower was expanded and strengthened to become a fortress of considerable military significance.

CALENHAD features:
*Over 20 pages of layouts, illustrations, and perspectives.
*Complete, multi-level floorplans for 4 guard-towers, the gatehouse, and the impressive beacon-tower.
*Typical layouts for watch-towers on the outer curtain wall and the wall-towers overlooking the inner bailey.
*Room by room descriptions and adventure suggestions.
*Statistics for the garrison of Calenhad and important NPCs residing in the beacon's vicinity.
Two of the most fearsome towers in all of Middle-earth, the Teeth of Mordor guard the entrance to Mordor, land of Sauron. The fortresses were erected by Gondor to prevent evil creatures from returning to the Black Land. After the Great Plague, it was repopulated by the very Orcs and Trolls it was designed to forbid.

Nearly two hundred feet tall, the Teeth are known individually as Carchost (s. "Fang-fort") and Narchost (s. "Fire-fort"). These towers and their connecting rampart commands the gap between the Mountains of Ash and the Mountains of Shadow. Chiseled of smooth and glassy slag, they erupt from the tortured plain like huge ebony jaws poised to close upon the foolish intruder.
The citadel that crowns Weathertop (S. Amon Sûl) is the greatest tower-fortress in Arnor and the focus of much of the struggle between Arnor's three successor kingdoms: Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur. Built by the Faithful Númenórean exiles led by Elendil the Tall in the late Second Age. it rises from the heart of Dúnedain's Northern Kingdom. The royal tower houses the Chief Palantîr (Seeing-stone) of the North and serves as the principal home of Arnor's High Seer. Few fortresses hold such significance; for its size and strength, Amon Sûl is unsurpassed by any other work of northern Dúnedain. Even the Witch-king of Angmar looks to the Tower of Amon Sûl as a great prize, a preeminent symbol of Dúnedain spirit.
Mirkwood, the mighty forest once named Greenwood the Great, extends east from the banks of the Anduin River to the vast plains of Rhovanion. In days of old, Elves made merry in its tree-ringed glades, accompanied by the music of chuckling brooks and tilling songbirds. The advent of the Necromancer has changed the forest's character. Its shadows are darker, and Giant Spiders lurk in their depths, while Orcs prowl the trails that wind through Mirkwood's increasingly dank undergrowth.

The Necromancer's Lieutenant includes:
*4 RISKY ADVENTURES in the shadows of Mirkwood - preserve a merchant's caravan from Orcish plunderers; seize a treasure destined for the Necromancer's hold; harass an army bent to Dol Guldur's dark designs; and defeat a prime enemy of the Free People in the Taur-e-Ndaedelos.
*DETAILED MAPS of the sites of action, including a Woodman's holding overrun by Orcs, an outpost on the flanks of Amon Lanc, and the caverns utilized as headquarters by the Necromancer's lieutenant, Skauril - a renegade Easterling intent on driving all light from Mirkwood.
In a review of Trolls of the Misty Mountains in White Dwarf magazine, Graham Staplehurst remarked that the adventures have some interesting twists and characters, but that the "language and ideas get somewhat childish" and that the description of the setting (including maps) is a bit confusing. In conclusion Staplehurst says that "the module slips a little from the excellent standards previously set by ICE."

Cover/Jacket Text
In a fantasy role playing game, you become the main character in an adventure you create. With Angus McBride's Characters of Middle-earth your fantasy campaign will feature more than merely a mind's eye view of the famous and infamous characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Twenty nine full-color plates (unmarred by text) bring these powerful individuals to life along with portraits of lesser known adventurers to be used by players in a Middle-earth game.

This volume describes individuals, both prominent and obscure, who roam Tolkien's world. Portrayed by Angus McBride for use by Gamemasters as NPCs or by Players as PCs, each color plate is accompanied by a page of relevant text. A brief fantasy description of the action, a note on the setting, a description, of the characters depicted, and full game statistics for the MERP and Rolemaster systems are included. These stats can be easily converted to most major FRP systems.

When Gandalf, the Witch-king, or Galadriel arrives on the scene, Gamemasters will now have an illustration to display. And each player can possess a full-color rendering of his or her character. As Marhic, flee Low Nose the Asdriag through the streets of seedy Strayhold. Combat a camel-mounted Silent One as Mairan of Greater Harad. Or hold your breath as Ehlissa when a dread Wraith looks your way.

Inside you'll find:

*FAMOUS CHARACTERS -
**FANGORN offering nourishment to Pippin and Merry
**GALADRIEL responding to a plea from a wounded Silvan messenger
**SARUMAN snared by Sauron through the Orthanc Palantír
**Éowyn and Merry confronting the Lord of the Nazgûl
**CELEMBRIMBOR at the forge
*ADVENTURERS SEEKING FAME -
**ORRIT KELARIN reliving his encounter with the heinous Birdman of the Suza Sumar
**MANARI AKAJI sorely pressed by a Desert Screamer
**ARAMATH, a Cardolani squire, supporting his lord against the mysterious Woses of the Black Wood and many more
In a fantasy role playing game, you become a main character in a fantasy adventure you create. With this character compendium you can meet Middle-earth's most exciting figures! Call them forth to add drama and danger to your fantasy game. Debate Gríma Wormtongue, challenge Ar-Pharazôn! Could you outride the Riders of Rohan or withstand the overwhelming presence of the Witch-king of Angmar?

This volume describes the Secondborn, the second race to enter Tolkien's world, the Men. Mortal, they dominate the later history of Middle-earth, and their influence increasingly colors the nature of life in Endor. Each is described in appearance, motivation, characteristics, and background. Game statistics for the MERP and Rolemaster game systems are included. These stats can be easily converted to most major FRP systems.

Inside you'll find:

*NINE NAZGÛL, the Witch-king of Angmar and the other Kings who accepted Sauron's Rings of power and became evil Ringwraiths
*DÚNEDAIN, the High Men of Gondor and Arnor, including Denethor, Boromir, Faramir, and Aragorn II (Strider)
*NÚMENÓRIANS, Lords like Elros and Ar-Pharazon, powerful ancestors of Endor's Dúnedain, the great sea-farers, colonizers, and conquerors
*GREAT FIGURES FROM THE WEST, including Theóden, Eomer, Eowyn, and Wormtongue from Rohan, Bard from Lake-town, and the enemies like Wulf and The Mouth of Sauron
This supplement is set in the most remarkable town of southern Rhovanion. Hazard the gullies and ravines that form the streets of Strayhold, a few miles south and east of Mirkwood. Called by many names, few of which are complimentary, it is home to scores of merchants and travellers who ply the Road to Rhûn. It also harbors an unsavory lot of highwaymen, petty thieves, and beggars. Brigands features three complete adventures. All are self-contained, and can easily be used in other locales.

The settlement of Strayhold, with its rag-tag collection of buildings, has the air of a dark carnival. For first time acquaintances, its corduroy streets form an intimidating labyrinth filled with hawkers and revellers. Strayhold's shops cater to vagabonds and rogues out to spend their ill-gotten gains and to travellers looking for excitement or rare goods. All manner of goods are available within the tangled streets; the sellers vary from friendly and helpful to dangerous and deadly. Unfortunately, most of the inhabitants lean toward the latter.

BRIGANDS OF MIRKWOOD includes:

*2 FULL-COLOR PAGES: featuring a beautifully detailed city map, and an area map of southern Mirkwood
*MAJOR LAYOUTS: detailing an evil magician's castle, the huge Rogue's Clan-hall, the Angry Horse Inn; plus enlarge city-sections
*STRAYHOLD: a rude community not to be forgotten, and not to be taken lightly
*3 COMPLETE ADVENTURES: The Excursion to Strayhold, Raid on the Rogue's Clan-hall, The Castle of Leärdinoth
This adventure supplement details the hidden vale of Imladris, where the remnants of the greatest Elven realm of Middle-earth resides. Experience the wonders of Elrond's House, haven for the Eldar and the last Kings of Arnor. Here are headquartered the Rangers, and here are protected the heirlooms of Arnor. Rivendell is also the meeting place of the White Council, that body of the wise that seeks to combat Sauron, the Dark Lord.

Rivendell is truly an island of refuge in the otherwise inhospitable landscape of Rhudaur. Here the weary traveller can find safe haven from the grip of the Witch-king and his minions. Protected on the north and east by tall spurs of the Misty Mountains, and on the west and south by the river Branduin, the vale has formidable defenses. These are certainly not enough to have kept it sheltered for so long from the spies of the Dark Lord, however: only by the power of Elrond is the Hidden Vale made safe.

RIVENDELL features:

*4 FULL-COLOR PAGES: showing the Northern Hollin and Southeast Rhudaur regions, as well as 2 area maps of the Rivendell Valley.
*MAJOR LAYOUTS: detailing the House of Elrond, including the Hall of Fire and the Council chambers.
*GAME STATISTICS: on Elrond, Glorfindel, the powerful Elven-ring Vilya, and many Elves of Rivendell.
*CULTURAL INFORMATION: on the other inhabitants of Rhudaur: the Hillmen, Dunedain, and Dunlendings.
This package details the High Pass of the Misty Mountains. Adventure into the depths of Goblin-gate, kingdom of the Great-goblin and the hiding place of Gollum, possessor of the One True Ring. Soar with the Great-eagles of Eagle's Eyrie, stroll the streets of Maethelburg, market of the upper Anduin, or battle Giants of the Misty Mountains.

Cutting through the heart of the Misty Mountains is the High Pass, connecting Rivendell and Rhudaur to the ancient Dwarf-road running east through the dreadful forest of Mirkwood. Near the summit, Orcs have delved one of their infamous subterranean strongholds, known to its apprehensive neighbors as Goblin-gate. The strategic locale of Goblin-gate is an incalculable threat to the Free Peoples because of its proximity to Angmar and the Orcish capital of Mount Gundabad.

INTRODUCTION

When darkness descends upon the Anduin Vales, the Northmen of this land gather close in their longhouses, barring the gates and piling the fires high. Mere superstitions do not intimidate these hardy folk, akin to the heroic Edain of the Elder Days, and even the howls of the Wargs heard ever closer to the isolated homesteads bring but few shudders. But the valley of the Great River lies under the shadow of the towering Misty Mountains, which have long been the haunts of the Orcs. In the year 1640 of the Third Age, the Great Plague is scarcely four years past, and the Northmen have yet to recover from its grievous devastation. Emboldened by the weakness of their neighbors and the evil emanating from Angmar to the north, Orcs and their Warg allies dare to strike ever more frequently and deeper into the vales of the Anduin.

Looking westward from the river plain, the snowcapped Misty Mountains stab defiantly toward the heavens. Cutting through the mountains' heart is the High Pass, connecting Rivendell and the lands of Eriador to the ancient Dwarf-road running east through the dreadful forest of Mirkwood. For three ages of the world, travellers and migrating peoples have followed this route but now the way is increasingly imperiled. Near the summit of the the pass the Orcs have delved one of their infamous subterranean strongholds, known to its apprehensive neighbors as Goblin-gate. Deep under the forbidding mountain crags the Orcs mine, forge and quarrel, while their lords plot the conquest of the surrounding lowlands. Within the Goblintown a fearsome host of savage Orcish warriors is already mustered. Not far distant is the Witch-king's domain of Angmar and the Orcish capital of Mount Gundabad, rendering the strategic locale of Goblin-gate an incalculable threat to the Free Peoples.

Fortunately, the Men of the Anduin Vales need not trust to their own arms alone to counter the goblin menace. High above the river valley and around the mountain peaks soar the Great Eagles, noblest avians of Middle-earth. Not far from the Ores' eastern portal rises the solitary pinnacle of Eagles' Eyrie, throne of the majestic Lord of the Eagles. Little below escapes the Eagles' roving gaze, and when on occasion the Free Peoples have confronted impending ruin, the Eagles' intervention has offered unexpected salvation.

Nor are the other inhabitants of the mountains uniformly wicked. In secluded glens and caves dwell the reclusive and solitary Stone Giants, an ancient race of awesome size and appearance. They do not welcome prying explorers, but they are no friends of the Orcs. When thunderstorms rage over the mountains, the Giants may be seen at their most formidable, casting boulders about in play and bellowing their deafening challenges, enough to make the boldest travellers quaver in fear.

In these troubled times, conflict has become all too familiar to the denizens of the mountains and vales. Adventurers are sure to find more than their fill of both danger and opportunity. Several powers contest for dominion in ever-shifting balance. Peace is a dim memory, and none can predict what the future holds in store.
This package details the south central vales of the White Mountains where the ghosts of the Oath-breakers haunt the land. Discover the secret of the mysterious Black Stone of Erech and explore the underground paths of the Dead.

A great grassy hill rises from the empty rolling fields three miles from Erech. Atop this Hill is the half-buried Stone of Erech. By this Stone, the Daen Coentis swore allegiance to Gondor, and it is here that the Army of the Dead shall gather when summoned to right their Oath-breaking. For now, however, Ghosts come to the hill every night, guarding its spiral path and the secret of the Erech Stone.

INTRODUCTION

Below the towering heights of the Ered Nimrais, the White Mountains, lies the Morthond (Black-root) Vale, a rich land of rolling, fertile fields and rushing alpine streams. This was, long ago, the land of the Daen Coentis (Dn. "People of Skill"), the folk who later became known as the Dunlendings. Their tribes ranged these rich valley lands and farmed these fields, hunted the mountain forests, herded in the meadows, and mined the cliffs and gorges. The Daen Coentis were never very many, but they were skilled workers in stone and keen observers of the seasons and the night skies. They erected hundreds of massive stone observatories that served as both calendars and as temples to the Valar, whom they worshipped as gods.

Their peaceful existence came to an end in the middle of the Second Age, during the Dark Years of Sauron. The devout but primitive religion of the Daen Coentis made it relatively easy for the Dark Lord to subvert the worship of these people. With the passing of years the Evil One preyed upon their superstitions.
HILLMEN of the Trollshaws details the lands of western RHUDAUR. Adventure in the rocky highlands near Cameth Brin, where Trolls and the ghosts of Petty-Dwarves haunt ancient caverns.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The ominous shadow of Cameth Brin, the "Twisted Hill," looms above the oaks and elms of the Trollshaws in central Rhudaur. Until the Third Age, few men dared to come near this dreadful place; many would-be explorers feared the presence of evil spirits, while others were scared off by the unnatural appearance of the hill itself. Cameth Brin rises 830 feet above the only vale in all the Trollshaws that might otherwise be called fair. Its base is a steep but natural hill, but from this foundation erupts a tortured outcropping of naked black granite that leans impossibly far over the southern face. It looks as if a sparrow's sneeze would send the craggy top tumbling down upon the town and the valley below. But rest assured - Cameth Brin will endure far worse than sneezes.

Early in the Third Age, Men gained mastery over Cameth Brin for a time, and they built upon it a mighty fortress dominating all the western Trollshaws, the most important region in the rugged and mostly unsettled lands of Rhudaur. The warped shadows of Cameth Brin fall heavily upon the affairs of Men in this wild and bleak country, for they have succumbed again to the powers of evil. Herein are told four tales of the Twisted Hill, stories that tell much of the unhappy history of Rhudaur and its peoples. The first tale concerns Hill-trolls, the second, Miffli the Petty-Dwarf, the original master of Cameth Brin, and how the Dunedain of Amor wrested the heights from him and his evil forces in 162. A third story tells of the desperate attempts to rescue the Princess Alquawen from the clutches of King Broggha and the Evil Elfmaiden, Korekalwen, in 1671 . The tale is yet to be told in its final form: it narrates the recovery of the ruins of Cameth Brin from the foul Orcs and Trolls that abide there at the dawn of the Fourth Age.

INTRODUCTION

Minas Ithil rests beneath the rising moon, serenely unaware of the terrors stirring in the nearby Mountains of Shadow. Travellers entering the Ithil Vale in 1640 of the Third Age behold the luminous marble walls and slender tower of this famed metropolis, the spire reflecting moonbeams that illuminate the vale with a haunting ethereal glow. Here, across the white bridge of the Ithilduin and between the flowering meadows on either bank, evening splendors beckon: thousands of flickering lanterns promise safety and rest for the weary wayfarer. In Minas Ithil men are immersed in the memories of their former glory, for now - since the Great Plague of four years ago - many of the city's mansions are tenanted by none save ghosts. Yet none foresee that this place of beauty is fated to become Minas Morgul, dread city of the undead and the fearsome domain of the Nazgûl.

The dangers are growing daily. Turning from the white bridge over the Ithilduin, one ascends a path on the northern side of the vale. Soon he reaches a series of stairs climbing into the Mountains of Shadow, and beyond that comes to a pass whose very name connotes an age-old evil: Cirith Ungol, the Spider's Cleft. Within a reeking, dark tunnel at the summit of the pass lurks a primeval monstrosity, the devourer of Men and Elves - Shelob, the Greatest of the Great Spiders. Beyond Shelob's lair the weird and desolate landscape of Mordor, Sauron's ancient domain, stands stark and ugly as a vast scar. Once the troops of Gondor warded this land against evil, but since the Plague the watch has been abandoned. Now only a skeletal Gondorian garrison remains to hold the formidable Tower of Cirith Ungol, which commands the westward passes from Mordor. In these days of Gondor's decline, Orcs, Trolls, and other creatures of Darkness dare to roam within sight of the Tower's walls.

On one side of the bridge Minas Ithil stands tall and proud, offering refuge and pleasures. On the other side lie the perils of Cirith Ungol and Mordor, where the valiant and skillful may win renown - or lose their lives trying! Here civilization and wilderness converge, and adventures are but a stone's throw away.
DAGORLAD details the east marshes and the shadowy haunts of the sorceress, Miruimor. Adventure on the plains before the Gates of Mordor, where roaming Orcs strike terror among unwary travelers.

INTRODUCTION

South of the Wilderland and north of Mordor lies a widely varying landscape stretching from the scarps and cliffs of the western Emyn Muil through the swamps and marshes of Nindalf to the bare plain known as the Dagorlad (S. "Battle Plain"). Once these lands were pleasant enough, in the way of wild places, although they were never much favored by settlers. The wetlands were filled with all manner of waterfowl and alive with the songs of frogs and blackbirds. The region's waters gleamed with fish, and deer grazed the marsh grasses, bothered only by the hunting expeditions of the scattered tribes of Marshmen. These folk were almost always left alone and ignored by the wars and battles which raged about them, for their watery lands have always been too difficult for an army to cross with any speed, and treacherous indeed for those not born of the marshes.

Instead, travelers have always gone by way of the broad plain before the dark gateway into Mordor. This expanse was once covered with wild grains and other grasses which quickly sprang up to hide the remains of the great war fought here at the end of the Second Age. Grouse pecked and nested there, and wild cattle grazed. Although unsettled by Men, these lands were peaceful and fruitful until a few hundred years ago, when the Shadow began to descend upon them once more.
BREE AND THE BARROW DOWNS: INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY

Bree-land is a small, settled area in central Eriador that lies just to the east of the Tyrn Gorthad, the ancient Barrow-downs. The region has been almost continuously inhabited since the First Age. In TA 1700 Bree is not much different than it would be at the time of the War of the Ring some 1300 years later - a prosperous, quiet but sometimes threatened farming community standing near the intersection of the Great East Road and the Greenway, the two major thoroughfares of the Kingdom of Arnor.

Bree-land is quite small and contains four villages within its boundaries: Bree, on the western slope of Bree Hill; Staddle, on the other side of the hill; Combe, a few miles to the east, and Archet, which lies a few miles northeast of Bree. The Chetwood, a good-sized but tame forest is also considered part of Bree-land and lies just north of Archet. The whole region is a generally pleasant, peaceful, and law-abiding spot where Men and Hobbits dwell together in peace, facing danger but rarely - unless one ventures to the Barrow-downs in search of gold and jewels and magic items, or is unfortunate enough to run into the bandits that plague the highways outside of Bree-land proper.

But the people of Bree-land generally ignore the haunted and foreboding Barrow-downs to the west. These grassy hills hold the graves of the Kings, Queens, Princes and aristocrats of Arnor. In the years after the Plague the mounds became haunted by evil spirits from Angmar and Rhudaur called Wights. The downs are rich in treasure and adventure, but it would be prudent for the adventurous to seek the council of the wise before trying their luck in the ancient and eerie tombs.

Classes available included Animist (Cleric), Bard, Fighter, Mage, Ranger and Scout (Rogue).

The citadel of Isengard was built by the Númenórians in a sheltered valley at the southern limits of the Misty Mountains. Its main purpose was to defend the gap of Calenardhon and the Fords of Isen against attacks by Sauron's forces. Self-sufficient and enchanted, it later became the virtually impregnable fortress of Saruman the White. No spire in Middle-earth was stronger, save the Dark Tower of Mordor.
