== Events ==

You've been doing a great job with the year articles, they're looking so much better now. One thing that's been on my mind is how we can store the data more efficiently. For instance I've started creating articles such as [[January 1]] which will list all the events that have ocurred on January 1st both on Earth and on Arda. Then we can include these articles into the [[Main Page]] to see what happened today. I haven't quite figured out the best layout for the page, since we'll want to easily include these. Also, I think we can probably be more specific as to what the Fellowship of the Ring was doing on that day. Like if there isn't any specific event on that day, we can just say they were traveling from X to X or something.

For now I guess we'll just have to manually type things in both year and day articles, but in the future it would be nice if we could type up the event in one location and the other articles include that data somehow, I haven't figured out how to get that to work yet. It would be nice if we could display events by type too, like publication, birth, death, etc. Just thought I'd let you know what's going through my head :) --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 17:41, 28 January 2008 (EST)

You asked about a source for the Lorien Elves in the Fall of Fornost page, and I have an answer. In Appendix A, page 1016 it says that Elrond brought Elves from Lorien to help fight Angmar. The only thing I'm a little concerned about is the light blue background makes the text somewhat hard to read. However, the lemmata to which you've been redirecting don't mention the alternative name at all, so that any reader who is no expert will only wonder why he has been redirected, and will be none the wiser on the alternative name. So I have taken the liberty of incorporating the minimally necessary information you threw out on redirection to the main lemmata in question. I've also added talk to both pages based on your diff comments.

Maybe in future it would be better to make sure the redirected name is actually mentioned in the article redirected to.

How about bringing some news into TolkienNews? :) Tolkien Times sounds good, but the last article there is from December2007. If updated more often, I think the site would be awesome, since it's one of the few (on Tolkien) who have RSS News Feed (basically it's TolkienNews, TheOneRing and Elfenomeno who are accurate and have RSS...at least that's what I've found so far).

== Title changes, language questions ==

I've read WP's article on editing, but it says nothing on changing the title. How do you change the title? I mean, I saw [[Long Horn Cotton]], I've checked the genealogies, and it's Long Hom. Some of the language headings are incorrect too - especially the [[:Category:Adûnaic_words|Adûnaic]] ones. And do we need a clearer entry on [[:Category:Rohirric_words|Rohirric]], because this is Old English and Rohirian (the word Tolkien used for it) mixed together... :Hello there Ederchil, first I wanted to thank you for your recent edits, it is always nice to have a new face around and you've been doing a great job. There should be a move button next to History and you can move the article to the correct title, I've gone ahead and fixed the Long Hom Cotton article. We usually try and bring up the move on the talk page before moving, but for obvious spelling mistakes such as that one it is okay to just move it without asking.
:One thing I always forget as well, when we want to link to Categories we have to add a colon in front, like <nowiki>[[:Category:Rohirric words|Rohirric]]</nowiki>, otherwise it doesn't display the text and just adds the article to said category.

Hyar: i'm sorry to accuse you like this but a friend of mine noticed what appears to be some extreme extrepolation in the [[Ugluk]] article. I had a check through the history and noticed that it all changed to that status with your rewrite. Now i know i dont know everything about the texts but what are your sources for Ugluk's company meeting Gollum, along with a preliminary meeting with grishnakh and specific information on how Ugluk's company came about? At the bottom I listed the other reference (aside from ''[[The Two Towers]]'') as "[[The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion]], "The Departure of Boromir,", "The Uruk-hai", this is indeed where the content you brought up came from. I'd definitely recommend this book if you don't have it already. It looks like [[Wayne G. Hammond|Hammond]] and [[Christina Scull|Scull]] found this information in a "Scheme" manuscript which is an unpublished timeline of events. I know little of this manuscript so I'll do some research on it, however I have the utmost respect for Hammond and Scull. Articles before proper names of Ages; should it be "in Second Age Numenor was really neat," or more like "in the Third Age the Hobbits were smoking?" It's given that particular dates within any certain age do not need a definite article (in F.A. 42 the elves all sailed the ocean blue) but I'm not sure which way I should format the other. Also, is there any way to flag articles that are in the process of major rewrites so that we are not doubling efforts? :"the Third Age" is the correct usage vs. simply "Third Age" and yes, you don't need to use "the" if you are stating a specific year of the age. Hm, flagging articles that are in the process of being rewritten is a good idea, until we create a template for such a notice, feel free to just mention so on the article's talk page. Hello Hyarion, we from Ardapedia are wondering what type of license you use for pictures in TolkienGateway, do you ask for permission from each drawer him/herself? Do you use the common GNU-License like in Wikipedia? :Hey there Sinthoras. One thing we definitely need to work on adding is licenses to all the images, as the licenses vary. We try to contact all of the artists for permission before uploading any of their work and so far I think everyone has stated as long as we aren't for-profit, credit them, and link back to their website, etc. then it's fine, we've yet to have someone not allow the images to be displayed. When we don't hear back or are unable to contact/find an artist we upload the images as "Fair use". I would recommend contacting the artists and asking for permission if you can as they tend to want to know who is using their images and I don't know of any that are available under the GNU FDL. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 18:21, 13 February 2008 (EST)

Is there any policy on including these in the article's title? It's obviously the case when dealing with disambigs, like [[Beren Erchamion]], [[Túrin Turambar]] or [[Dior Eluchil]]. However, it's unclear in the case of the kings of Rohan: compare [[Brytta Léofa]] and [[Fréaláf Hildeson]] with [[Théoden]] (not "Théoden Ednew"), and [[Éomer]] (not "Éomer Éadig"). Nor is it the case with [[Borondir]] ("Borondir Udalraph"). :Good question. I don't have a problem with adding them, as obviously we would include redirects from the common name. Up until this point we have tried to just use whatever name was mentioned the most in Tolkien's text as this is what the most people would be familiar with. My only concern would be it would turn a large percentage of links to Théoden, Éomer, etc. into links to redirects, and we probably don't want to bother with typing <nowiki>[[Théoden Ednew|Théoden]]</nowiki>. It also might add, if only minimally, some confusion for those who aren't familiar with "Théoden Ednew" or "Éomer Éadig". I was disussing this with someone: there's apparently no good place where the names of all the characters and places are in translations of the book. :Hey there Charles. There really isn't any site that includes details of the vast number of collectibles relating to [[J.R.R. Tolkien]]'s works, and we wanted some place where a fan could go to find all the information in one place. The statues category has a long way to go and eventually along with our [[:Category:Calendars|calendars]] and [[:Category:Books|books]] categories we hope to list every collectible that has been produced. We also plan on having an article for all of the games that have been created which relate to Tolkien as well. If in the future the community feels the presence of the collectibles/games/etc hurt the lore articles then it is possible we could separate them more and move the articles to a different namespace or sub-wiki. Right now they are definitely a lower priority but as many fans have shown an interest in collecting we wanted to make sure the information was available. Hello all. This is my first addition to the talk page, so bear with me. Hyarion, on your user page, you said that you handled most of the technical issue, so I would like to ask about one: The Main Page has remained stagnant for some time. The Featured Article, which in my opinion should change daily, has sat on The Children of Hurin for ages. While this is certainly a noteworthy article, we need to cycle through more material. Also, the featued quote has not changed for some time.

Since there is no way to 'edit' the Main Page that I can see, I am wondering if there is a way I could update this main page (or anyone could). I would love to do it--its right up my alley--but I recognize that I am fairly new to the site, so someone more experianced might have to handle it.

Either way, I would love to see the Main Page updated. Thoughts?

If updated more often, I think the site would be (even more) awesome, since it's one of the few (on Tolkien) who have RSS News Feed (basically it's TolkienNews, TheOneRing and Elfenomeno who are accurate and have RSS...at least that's what I've found so far).

:It is at the top of my list of extensions to install. To install it we needed to get PHP5 and upgrade the MediaWiki engine. We upgraded the server and PHP and now all that is left is to upgrade MW which will be finished shortly, then the Cite extension is easy. Hello there :)
I just discovered that a couple of the honey-bunnies here were kind enough to make a page for me and upload some of my art, and that at some point you'd taken the trouble to edit it (thank you, to all three!). So I just added a few newer pieces - I hope that's okay.
But I also managed to make a goof on the first upload, so I'm afraid it'll need deleting - I think I marked it for deletion properly... Argh.
I thought it might be a big arrogant if I added my own pics to articles, but if any of them are any use - please feel free. And if you have any articles lacking illustrations let me know. I have quite a few of the little buggers, plus I'm currently working on some Silmarillion things (including an 'Annatar').

Bree was a very ancient settlement of men in Eriador by the time of the [[Third Age]] of Middle-earth, but after the collapse of the kingdom of Cardolan, which had claimed it, Bree continued to thrive without any central authority or government for many centuries.

Bree was the most westerly settlement of men in all Middle-earth by the time of the [[War of the Ring]], and became one of only three or four inhabited settlements in all of Eriador. During [[the War of the Ring]] a days ride east from the village along the road lay [[The Forsaken Inn]], according to [[Aragorn]], although nothing else is known of that place.

The meeting led to the undertaking of the [[Quest of Erebor]], which resulted in the death of Smaug and the finding of the [[One Ring]] by [[Bilbo Baggins]]. In [[Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring]], Frodo and his companions arrive at Bree almost immediately after the scene in which they leave the Shire, giving the impression (perhaps unintentionally) that the two are much closer together than described by Tolkien.

'''Fangorn forest''' was a deep, dark woodland that grew beneath the southern [[Misty Mountains]], under the eastern flanks of that range. It gained notoriety as the habitat of the [[Ents]] in the [[Third Age]]. The forest, known as '''[[Entwood]]''' in [[Rohan]], was named after the oldest Ent, [[Treebeard|Fangorn]].

Fangorn forest was the easternmost survivor of the immense forest that spanned all of [[Eriador]] and [[Calenardhon]] in the [[First Age]] and early [[Second Age]], but which was destroyed by the [[Númenóreans]] and [[Sauron]]. Fangorn forest was the oldest part of Treebeard's realm, and here the Ents retreated.

There they met Treebeard and persuaded him of the danger that [[Saruman]] poses to the Ents and their forest. Part of the reason is that [[Saruman]]'s Orcs had been chopping down the trees at the south and west side of the forest, which had angered the Ents.

On [[March 1]], [[Third Age 3019|T.A. 3019]], [[Aragorn II|Aragorn]], [[Gimli Elf-friend|Gimli]] and [[Legolas of Mirkwood|Legolas]] entered the forest in search of Merry and Pippin. Rather than the two young hobbits, they encountered the White Wizard. At first they believed it to be [[Saruman]] before realising that it was [[Gandalf]], returned from death.
