As with ''[[Hobbit]]'', ''Ent'' is a term that in modern times is almost exclusively connected with [[J.R.R. Tolkien]], and the usage of the term seldom evokes in people its earlier meanings.

Ents are a very old race that appeared in [[Middle-earth]] when the [[Elves]] did. They were apparently created by [[Eru Ilúvatar]] at the behest of [[Yavanna]], after she learned that [[Aulë]]'s children, the [[Dwarves]], were wont to fell trees. Ents were envisioned as Shepherds of the Trees, to protect the forests from [[Orcs]], Dwarves and other perils. The Elves have tales of teaching the trees to talk, and they also taught the Ents to talk: although the Ents were sentient beings at the time, they did not know how to speak until the Elves taught them. [[Treebeard]] said of the Elves "curing the Ents of their dumbness" that it was a great gift that could not be forgotten ("always wanted to talk to everything, the old Elves did").

Ents are tree-like creatures, having become like the trees that they shepherd. They vary in traits, from everything to height and size, colouring, and the number of fingers and toes. An individual Ent more or less resembles the specific species of tree that they typically guard. For example, [[Quickbeam]] guarded Rowan trees and thus looked very much like a Rowan (tall and slender, etc.). In the [[Third Age]] of Middle-earth, the [[Fangorn forest|forest of Fangorn]] was apparently the only place Ents still inhabited, although the Ent-like [[Huorn]]s may still have survived elsewhere, as in the Old Forest.

=== History ===

Almost nothing is known of the early history of the Ents — they apparently lived in and protected the large forests of Middle-earth in previous ages, and they briefly appear near the end of the [[First Age]], attacking a band of Dwarves, apparently summoned by [[Beren]] and [[Lúthien]]. [[Treebeard]] told of a time when apparently all of [[Eriador]] was one huge forest and part of his domain, but these immense forests were cut by the [[Númenóreans]] of the Second Age, or destroyed in the calamitous War of the Elves and Sauron of the 17th century of the Second Age. Treebeard's statement is also supported by remarks [[Elrond]] Half-elven made at the Council of Elrond. Elrond said that "Time was once when a squirrel could carry a nut from tree to tree from Rivendell to the Great Sea...", further indicating that all of Eriador was once a single vast primeval forest, of which Fangorn Forest was just "the Eastern End of it" according to Treebeard.

There used to be ''Entwives'' (literally "Ent-women"), but they started to move farther away from the Ents because they liked to plant and control things, so they moved away to the region that would later become the [[Brown Lands]] across the Great River [[Anduin]]. This area was destroyed by [[Sauron]], and the Entwives disappeared. The Ents looked for them, but have never found them. It is sung by the Ents that one day they will find each other. In the Fellowship of the Ring, Sam Gamgee says his cousin Hal saw treelike giant in the north of the Shire. When Pippin and Merry tell Treebeard about the Shire, Treebread says the entwives would like that land.

=== Language ===

Ents are not hasty creatures, they take their time; even their language is "unhasty". In fact, their [[Languageslanguage]] appears to be based on an ancient form of [[Common Eldarin]], later enriched by [[Quenya]] and [[Sindarin]], although it includes many unique 'tree-ish' additions. There are actually two different languages:

* Old Entish. Originally, the Ents had a language of their own, described as long and sonorous; it was a [[tonal language]] (like Chinese). It is unknown if a non-Ent could even pronounce Old Entish correctly: it was filled with many subtle vowel shades, and was very longwinded. Only Ents spoke Old Entish; not because they kept their language a secret, as the Dwarves did with Khuzdul, but because no others could master it. It was quite an alien language to all others. The Huorns and trees of Fangorn forest could understand Old Entish and converse with the Ents and each other with it. The only extant sample, ''a-lalla-lalla-rumba-kamanda-lindor-burúme'', the word for ''hill'' (or possibly even just part of the name of a specific hill), was described as a very inaccurate sampling. Even the Elves, master linguists, could not learn Old Entish, nor did they attempt to record it due to its complex sound structure. The grammar structure of Old Entish was also quite bizarre, often described as a lengthy, long-winded discussion of a topic. There may not even have been a word for ''yes'' and ''no'': such questions would be answered by a long monologue on why the Ent in question did or did not agree with the Ent who asked the question. The Ent [[Quickbeam]] was regarded as a very "hasty" Ent for answering a question before another Ent had finished: the end may only have been another hour away. Ents as a rule would say nothing in Old Entish unless it was worth taking a long time to say. For everyday language function, they usually resorted to "New" Entish.
*"New" Entish (Never named as such in the text). Due to contact with the Elves, the Ents learned much from them. The Ents found the Elvish language Quenya to be a lovely language, and adapted it after their fashion to everyday use. However, they basically adapted Quenya vocabulary to Old Entish grammatical structure. Thus, unlike Old Entish, the individual words of "New Entish" that characters such as Treebeard spoke were easily translatable. However, in context they formed lengthy run-on sentences of redundant adjectives that could still stretch well over an hour in length. For example, when Treebeard essentially wanted to tell Merry and Pippin, "There is a shadow of the Great Darkness in the deep dales of the forest", he literally said in New Entish "Forest-golden-leaves, deep-dales-winter, forest-many-shadowed, deep-valley-black". Unlike Old Entish, a non-Ent conceivably could speak "New" Entish. Even when speaking the Common Speech, Westron, Ents fell into the habit of adapting it into their grammatical structure of repeating compound adjectives used to express fine shades of meaning.

Treebeard boasted to Merry and Pippin about the strength of the Ents. He said that they were much more powerful than [[Trolls]], which [[Morgoth]] (in the Elder Days or First Age) supposedly made as imitations of the Ents, but did not come near to their power. He compares this with how [[Orcs]] were Morgoth's imitation of [[Elves]].

The Elvish name for Ents is ''Onodrim'', singular ''Onod''.

=== The March of the Ents ===

In ''[[The Two Towers]]'', the second volume of Tolkien's ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'', the Ents—usually a very patient, deliberate people—do become angry at [[Saruman]], whose armies are cutting down (in their eyes, killing) large numbers of their trees. They convene an ''Entmoot'', a meeting of the Ents of [[Fangorn Forest]] at Derndingle.

After lengthy deliberation (though from the perspective of the Ents, this is very quick action), they march on Saruman's fortress at [[Isengard]]: the last march of the Ents. They are led by [[Treebeard]], the oldest Ent, and accompanied by the [[Hobbits]] [[Meriadoc Brandybuck]] and [[Peregrin Took]]. They destroy [[Isengard]] in an all-out assault and trap Saruman in the tower of [[Orthanc]]. Tolkien later noted that the destruction of Isengard by the Ents was based off of personal disappointment in MacBeth, when "Birnham Wood is come to castle Dunsinane", Tolkien was less than thrilled that it amounted to men walking on stage with leaves in their hats; he decided that when he did that scene for himself, he'd do it right.

The '''Eagles''' were immense flying birds that were sentient, and could speak.

The eagles are said in [[The Silmarillion]] to have been "devised" by [[Manwë]] Súlimo, leader of the [[Valar]], and were often called '''Eagles of Manwë'''. They were sent from [[Valinor]] to Middle-earth to keep an eye on the exiled [[Ñoldor]], and on their foe the evil Vala [[Morgoth]].

For a time the Lord of the Eagles, [[Thorondor]], kept his eyries at the top of [[Thangorodrim]], the volcano above [[Angband]] itself. While they lived there, Thorondor helped [[Fingon]] rescue [[Maedhros]]. Thorondor's folk later removed their eyries to the [[Crissaegrim]], part of the [[Echoriath]] or ''Encircling Mountains'' about [[Gondolin]]. There they were friends of [[Turgon]], and kept spies off the mountains.

Thorondor wounded Morgoth in the face after Morgoth's battle with [[Fingolfin]], and he carried Fingolfin's corpse to the Echoriath, where he was buried by Fingon.

The Eagles fought alongside the army of the Valar, [[Elves]] and Edain during the [[War of Wrath]] at the end of the [[First Age]].

In the [[Second Age]], a pair of Eagles had an eyrie in the King's House in [[Armenelos]], the capital of Númenor until the Kings became hostile to the Valar. The Eagles also watched the peak of Mount [[Meneltarma]], and three Eagles would always appear when someone climbed to the summit.

In the [[Third Age]], Thorondor's descendants [[Gwaihir]] and [[Landroval]] lived in an eyrie to the east of the [[Misty Mountains]] in [[Wilderland]].

In ''The Hobbit,'' no eagles are identified by name. Only the title [[Lord of the Eagles]] distinguishes the eagle leader from other eagles in this story. (The text adds that he was given the title [[King of All Birds]] at a later date.) Many readers assume, without hard evidence, that it was Gwaihir and Landroval who rescued [[Thorin Oakenshield]] and company from a band of [[Warg]]s and [[Goblin]]s, flying them to the river [[Anduin]], and later assisted in the [[Battle of Five Armies]] fought near [[Erebor]], the Lonely Mountain.

Before and during the [[War of the Ring]], one of Gwaihir's people rescued [[Gandalf]] the Grey from the top of [[Isengard]], and others of his people rescued [[Frodo Baggins]] and [[Samwise Gamgee]] from [[Mount Doom]] in [[Mordor]] after the [[One Ring]] had been destroyed.

Tolkien's painting of an eagle on a crag appears in some editions of ''The Hobbit''. According to [[Christopher Tolkien]], the author based this picture on a painting by [[Archibald Thorburn]] of an immature [[Golden Eagle]], which Christopher found for him in ''The Birds of the British Isles'' by [[T. A. Coward]]. However, Tolkien's use of this model does not necessarily mean that his birds were ordinary Golden Eagles. In his last writings Tolkien speculated that these great Eagles were actually [[Maiar]] in bird-shape, as he felt it unlikely [[Ilúvatar]] would grant [[Fëa and hröa|feär]] to animals. If this is true, then [[Roac the Raven]] and the Thrush, who appear in ''The Hobbit'', must also be Maiar or other spirits in animal form (and possibly even [[Beorn]], who sometimes takes the form of a bear).

The [[Greenhands]] were descended from [[Holman The Greenhanded|Holman "the greenhanded"]], and Holman's namesake and grandson, [[Holman Greenhand]], was at least the third of the line to tend the gardens of [[Hobbiton]]. Holman was the gardener at [[Bag End]] for [[Bilbo Baggins]], and perhaps also for his father [[Bungo Baggins|Bungo]]. In about the year [[III]] 2941, he took on his young relation [[Hamfast Gamgee]] as an apprentice. Hamfast eventually became the gardener at Bag End himself, and was followed by his son [[Samwise Gamgee|Samwise]].

In a curious and unlikely way, Holman was instrumental in the winning of the [[War of the Ring]]. One morning in the spring of III 2941, Bag End was visited by the [[Wizards|Wizard]] [[Gandalf]]. Bilbo was away from home for the [[Elves]]' New Year, so Gandalf struck up a conversation with Holman. It was Holman's description of his employer that encouraged Gandalf to include Bilbo in the journey to the [[Lonely Mountain]], which in turn led to the finding of the [[One Ring]], the means through which [[Sauron]] was ultimately defeated. If not for the part of Holman Greenhand, then, the western lands might well have fallen under the yoke of the [[Dark Lord]].

Well, I was suprised to see that I was the second person to register in here, but that's even better: there's plenty of room to fill in.

I found these pages - as you might guess - via the Finnish Kontu forum, where the administrator Merri had posted a message informing about possibilities for co-operation. link? I couldn't figure that out, being quite unaccustomed to Wiki. The only way I could start writing a new article was to edit a previous one and add there a new internal link and continue editing that one.

I have a feeling that will be a common one (because I had to figure that one out myself) so I'll post that on the help page. All you have to do is type in your address bar, something like http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Title of Page (it will even insert the underscores for you) and you will be directed to a page that does not exist and you can edit it that way.

Also, something I broke my own rule on, its a good idea to type a 'signature' when adding a comment to a discussion, otherwise no one knows who wrote it. I wish mediawiki would do it automatically, but until I fix that, a good standard to use is like mine below, just type "&mdash ;" but take the space out between the h and the semicolon...I can't figure out how to show those literally. You can also use -- it's just a matter of preference. And then type 4 ~ in a row. The first one prints out your name, second the time, 3rd the date, and 4th the timezone I believe.

EDIT: Hm...looks like your one step ahead of me, on your pages, you have exactly that.

EDIT: On second thought I'm going to move this to User:Hyarion because I'll probably keep this page to say what the English translation of Hyarion is.

Battle of Bywater

The Battle of Bywater was a battle between the [[Hobbit]]s of [[Shire (Middle-earth)|The Shire]] and a band of [[Ruffian]]s who followed "Sharkey" ([[Saruman]]). [[Meriadoc Brandybuck]] (Merry) himself slew the leader, a squint-eyed [[orc (Middle-earth)|orc]]ish-looking brute. [[Peregrin I Took|Peregrin Took]] (Pippin) also took part in this battle. The courage and skill they had discovered during the [[Battle of the Pelennor Fields]] had made them confident in their abilities, and this enabled them to rally the Shire-folk against the invaders.

The Battle of Bywater occurred on [[November 3]], 1419 by Shire-reckoning in the [[Shire Calendar]] and was the last military engagement of the [[War of the Ring]].

Ruffians had been sent by Sharkey (Saruman) to supress the Hobbit revolt breaking out in Bywater. However, the Hobbits' scouts gave them advanced warning. The Hobbits then devised a plan to surround and trap the Ruffians when they arrived. Makeshift mobile roadblocks were made out of carts and wagons, and after the Ruffians reached the center of the town the road was blocked in front and behind them. The Ruffians then tried to fight their way out through the Hobbits, some breaking through. These were then encircled and engaged until the battle was won.

The Hobbits were informally commanded by Merry and Pippin. Technically, Pippin was still a Knight of Gondor, as King [[Elessar]] had not released him from service but granted him indefinite leave, and when he departed Aragorn reminded Pippin that his restored kingship now extended to the old northern lands which included the Shire. Therefore, Pippin loosely saw himself as fighting off the Ruffians with the authority of the King supporting him. Sam Gamgee also fought in the battle. [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]] was also present at the battle, though he did not fight: he spent the battle making sure that no Ruffians who threw down their weapons were killed (indeed, during his entire life, even when The Shire itself was invaded, Frodo never killed a sentient being).

The next day, Frodo, and his three companions, leading the Hobbits of the Shire, marched to [[Hobbiton]]. There Frodo confronted Saruman and exiled him from the Shire. Then [[Wormtongue]] killed Saruman by slitting his throat, on the very doorstep of [[Bag End]]. Before Frodo could react the Hobbits of the Shire shot Wormtongue dead with three arrows. Thus, the last stroke of the War of the Ring fell at the very door that Frodo had first set out from.
