Brethil was a cluster of woods between the Teiglin and the Sirion, originally part of Doriath. It was to Brethil that the House of Haleth removed after dwelling east of the river Gelion. Some Drúedain also dwelt there. The main feature of the forest was the hill of Amon Obel, upon which stood Ephel Brandir, the main settlement of the Haladin.

King Thingol granted Brethil to the Men of the House if Haleth, on the condition that they guard the Crossings of Teiglin. This condition they readily accepted. The men of Brethil also took part in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, were they were all slain.

Túrin came here after the destruction of Nargothrond and the journey to Dor-Lómin, and rested here for a while, untill rumours came again about Glaurung, the father of all dragons.
At the borders of this forest Glaurung was slain by Túrin.
The Falathrim (Sindarin "Coast Elves") were the shoreland people of the Falas who took Círdan as their lord from the beginning, and were also the last to leave Middle-earth forever. Of Telerin descent, these Elves remained in Beleriand when their kin journeyed to Valinor at the persuasion of the Maia Ossë. They were the first mariners and shipbuilders of Middle-earth. They were the second of two "subdivisions" of the Teleri to stay behind, the other being the Eglath, who stayed behind to find their lost lord Elwë. Their last home on Middle-earth before finally leaving for the Undying Lands was the Grey Havens, but before that they dwelt mainly in the ancient havens of Eglarest and Brithombar.
}}Isildur.mp3
Isildur was a Dúnadan of Númenor, the elder son of Elendil, High King of the Realms in Exile. He was briefly the second king of Gondor and Arnor. His name means "Devoted to the Moon".

History
Isildur was born in Númenor, the eldest son of Elendil son of Amandil, the last Lord of Andúnië. His younger brother was Anárion. Isildur had four sons, Elendur, Aratan, Ciryon, and Valandil, though his wife was never named.

In his youth, Isildur stole a fruit of Nimloth before it was cut down, preserving the line of the White Tree, and later planted a seedling in the city of Minas Anor.

Isildur together with his father and brother were saved from the Downfall of Númenor when they fled for Middle-earth. Isildur and Anárion landed in the south and established the realm of Gondor, while their father landed in the north, founding the realm of Arnor.

Isildur lived on the east bank of the river Anduin and established the city of Minas Ithil (which would later be named Minas Morgul), as well as the province of Ithilien. However, in 3428 Sauron captured Minas Ithil, and Isildur fled down the Anduin, then northwest to Gil-galad in Lindon and his father in Arnor, leaving Anárion to rule over Gondor.

He returned with his father and the Elven High King Gil-galad in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men in 3434 with their combined armies. His father and Gil-galad threw down Sauron, winning the battle, though both were slain. Isildur took the hilt shard of his father's sword Narsil, which had broken beneath Elendil in the combat with Sauron, and used it to cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger.

Ignoring the advice of Elrond and Círdan, lieutenant of Gil-galad, he did not destroy the Ring, instead claiming it as an heirloom for his House.

After the fall of Sauron, Isildur left Meneldil, son of his brother Anárion, in charge of Gondor, and returned north to Arnor with his three sons. His fourth son Valandil had stayed behind in Rivendell. At the Gladden Fields, Isildur was ambushed by roaming Orcs, and his son told him to flee when he saw that the battle was lost. He put on the ring in order to escape, but due to the Ring's treachery he was killed, losing the Ring in the river Anduin.

He was the last king to rule both Gondor and Arnor until King Elessar reunited the Kingdom at the end of the Third Age.

In the riddling rhyme "Seek for the Sword that was Broken" the Ring is referred to cryptically as Isildur's Bane.
Portrayal in Adaptations
1978: The Lord of the Rings (1978 film):
:Prince Isildur is mentioned in the prologue, and he is shown to cut the Ring off Sauron's hand in battle, rather than from a defeated Sauron.

2001-2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy:
:Isildur briefly appears in the first scenes of the first film, and in an extended flashback scene in the second. Isildur is played by Harry Sinclair. Sinclair, a friend of Peter Jackson, was asked because he was the most corrupt looking person Jackson knew. Sinclair had only one line, "No!", which was dubbed by Hugo Weaving.

:In the movie, Isildur apparently is the last king of Gondor; Anárion and heirs and Arnor do not appear at all. However, in the Extended Editions both Arnor and the House of Anárion are mentioned, and at times it is clear that Isildur was not the last King, so this might be dialogue error. The story of Isildur's succumbing to the temptation of the Ring bothers Aragorn who fears that he could have the same weakness (a fear that is not evident in the book).

2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (video game):

:In the game starts with a prologue, where you have to play with Isildur beneath Mount Doom. After you complete the mission you see how Isildur defeats Sauron.

2006: The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II:
:Isildur appears only in cinematics battling Sauron. However, in the expansion of the game, Isildur is mentioned more detailed in the Angmar campaign.

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:
:Isildur makes his first appearance in a flashback during Volume III: Allies of the King, Book III Echoes of the Dead where it is explained how the oathbreakers came to be.

Flies and Spiders is the 8th chapter of The Hobbit.
Summary
Bilbo and Thorin and Company enter Mirkwood following the Elf-path. The Forest Gate was like an arch leading into a gloomy tunnel made by two great old trees with a few blackened leaves leaning together, strangled with ivy and lichen.

The path was narrow and wound in and out among the trunks. Inside the forest the quiet was deep and all the trees leaned over the dwarves forming a sort of darkened green glimmer around them. Occasionally a thin sunbeam slipped in through some opening or tangled boughs and matted twigs. There were black squirrels and dark dense cobwebs with thick threads often stretched from tree to tree, or tangled in the lower branches on either side. For some unexplained reason, there were none stretched across the path. There was no movement of air under the roof, and it was still, dark and stuffy even for the dwarves.

In the nights it then became pitch-dark except for pairs of yellow, red or green eyes appearing and fading. The dwarves slept all closely huddled together with watchers in turn. They had tried lighting watch-fires, but it seemed to bring hundreds of eyes and thousands of big dark-grey and black moths or huge bats

Bilbo was hungry, as they were extremely careful with their provisions, but days after days, the food was beginning to get low. They wasted many arrows shooting at the squirrels, before they managed to bring one down only to find that it had horrible taste. They were thirsty too when one day they found their path blocked by a gloomy stream, the Enchanted River Beorn had warned them about; so they did not drink from it but only took with their emptied skins.

There had been a wooden bridge across, but it had rotted only the broken posts were left, but Bilbo, who had the best sight, noted a black little boat against the far bank. Fili, who was the youngest and with the best sight, threw an iron hook (for catching the packs to the straps about their shoulders) according to Bilbo's instructions. It catched but Fili pulled in vain since the boat was tied. Kili, Oin and Gloin came to his help until suddenly they all fell over on their backs. Bilbo and Balin stopped and seized the boat before it floated off down the current.

Thorin, Bilbo, Fili and Balin went across the river first by using another rope and hook to pull the boat back across. As they were crossing, Bombur fell in the river. The rest of the company made it safely across, but they were stuck carrying Bombur.
My name is Celmon Hristocolindo (a Quenya translation of my given name). My sister is also on this site under the User Name Rilaiss. I am a Tolkien scholar. My specific area of expertise is the Tengwar and the Cirth, which I can write with ease. My grandfather introduced me to the series and has sent me a highly compressed version of what can be found in The History of Middle-earth that is not mentioned elsewhere, nor is it proven true or false in later works, therefore, that information, I believe, is considered canon.

LotRfan01:

So this is a question many first- time Tolkien readers have: What is the difference between an Orc and a goblin?

First I will quote from the Orc page on this site:

“In The Hobbit, Tolkien primarily used the word "goblin" for Orcs. In The Lord of the Rings, "Orc" is used predominantly, though there are several references to "goblins".

"Goblin" is an English word, where as "Orc" is Old English, the language used by Tolkien to represent Rohirric. Thus, there is no difference between Orcs and Goblins, and the two names of different languages have much the same relationship as dog (English) and hund (German).

The original edition of the Hobbit and early drafts of The Lord of the Rings first used 'goblin' everywhere and used 'hobgoblin' for larger, more evil goblins: when goblins were replaced with Orcs Tolkien invented the term Uruk-hai for his more evil Orcs.”

Orcs and Goblins are therefore, one and the same. Why then does Tolkien use Goblin instead of Orc in the Hobbit? The first possible explanation takes a look outside of the books. Most likely what happened was, in writing a story for his son, he just used Goblin, and when he decided that it would become part of his legendarium, he changed it to Orc and explained this change as:

“Orc is not an English word. It occurs in one or two places but is usually translated goblin (or hobgoblin for the larger kinds). Orc is the hobbits' form of the name given at that time to these creatures.”

We can therefore see that these words were meant to be used interchangeably. Still, the question remains: Why didn’t he change references to Goblins into references of Orcs?

Well he does in fact make a reference or two throughout the book, such as orcrist meaning “Goblin-cleaver” and he calls the big goblins the "orcs of the mountains" . Another example of the interchangeable word would be in the chapter “The Riders of Rohan” where it states:

“Upon a stake in the middle was set a great goblin head; upon its shattered helm the white badge could still be seen."

As only the Uruks were marked with the white hand, this could only mean that the “great goblin head” Referenced here is actually the head of an Uruk-hai. This would mean that an Uruk is actually a Goblin, as are Orcs.

A theory put together by readers is that an Orc is a Goblin under the command and control of Morgoth, Saruman, or Sauron; whereas, a goblin is under its own command or under the command only of its tribe. This would explain why they are called Goblins in the hobbit and Orcs in The Lord of the Rings. However, this is only fan ideas and has no canonical basis and we must therefore discard it.

I therefore come to the inescapable conclusion that Orcs and Goblins are merely terms used to refer to the same creature and at any time could replace one another in any portion of Tolkien’s work.

A question that has never and can never be fully resolved is the matter of how many Balrogs there are. Please note: this essay will go into the realms of guessing and leave the area of canonized works.

First we look at references in the early works of Tolkien:

“… yet others were creatures of pure flame that writhed like ropes of molten metal . . . upon them rode Balrogs by the hundreds . . . the most dire of all those monsters which Melko devised against Gondolin”

--BoLT2 “The Fall of Gondolin”

“There came wolves and serpents, and there came Balrogs one thousand, and there came Glómund the Father of Dragons.”

--LRoW “Quenta Silmarillion ch. 16 ~15”

As we can see here the original concept of Balrogs made them greater in number but weaker than they currently are. In a note by J.J.R. Tolkien, it is expressed that there should be fewer Balrogs, “at most seven”. A possible reason for this is that if all Balrogs were as powerful as the Moria Balrog was, then the elves would have stood no chance, not when they are coming by the thousands. At the point of his death he had not cut it down to seven, but how many was it cut down to? We will now look at the Canon Silmarillion.

It mentions the battle of Ecthelion and Gothmog. This is also added to the battle between Glorfindel and the Balrog on the pinnacle. All told there were two Balrogs that assaulted the city and died, along with at least five more that were still alive after the battle. It is however possible that only two Balrogs were sent, Gothmog and the slayer of Glorfindel. This would mean two Balrogs were sent and both died. Not very likely of Morgoth to do, he would send a large force so that there would be no chance of escape. At the very least the number of Balrogs sent was five, in my opinion.

Later it says that the Balrogs were destroyed. Pay attention to the plural there. And some few escaped. Again note the use of a few. Now under this reasoning we can assume at least three Balrogs escaped, but probably more like four, five or six. Now the number of Balrogs destroyed was at least five, but more probably seven eight or nine. This would allow for a total of 15 Balrogs in the War of Wrath. More than one Balrog escaped, because it stated that a few Balrogs fled and escaped destruction, so at least two, but most likely three fled. And as the Balrogs were all destroyed, save a few. That implies that those escaping were in the minority, so if two or three fled, it is logical to assume that five or six at least were destroyed. The absolute least number of Balrogs at this Battle could have been seven, in my opinion.

The number of Balrogs in the War of Wrath must then be added to the number of Balrogs killed in the Fall of Gondolin. Which is anywhere from two. We should not count the Balrogs left alive after the battle as they were involved in the War of Wrath. This brings us to a total of at most seventeen Balrogs, a reasonable amount, to as little as eleven, by my reasoning. The absolute least number of Balrogs in existence would have to be nine, but this is very unlikely due mostly to the amount of stress placed on the fact that all the Balrogs save a few escapees were destroyed.

Now, he could have said that 1 Balrog escaped while the rest were destroyed, and that would place the number significantly lower. We could assume that this would be four or five Balrogs total in the War of Wrath, leaving a total of seven Balrogs. But revisions had not ever reached this point so it is a totally non-canon assumption. However, he was close, and it would be no big stretch to say that there were in fact only seven.

}}Ar-Gimilzôr was the twenty-third King of Númenor and the grandfather of Ar-Pharazôn, the last King. He was a great enemy of the Faithful, and persecuted them during his reign because he was suspicious of their ties to the Elves of Tol Eressëa.

Ar-Gimilzôr completely outlawed the use of the Elven tongues once he came to power. In addition, he punished those of the Faithful who still welcomed the Elven ships that came from Eressëa, because he considered these Elves to be the "spies of the Valar", whose influence he despised. Eventually, Ar-Gimilzôr's distrust of the Faithful caused him to exile them to the east of Númenor, near the haven of Rómenna. There he kept them under surveillance.

Because of Ar-Gimilzôr's harsh treatment of them, the Faithful began leaving Númenor in increasing numbers and settling near Pelargir, their haven in Middle-earth. However, those who stayed in Númenor until its Downfall would eventually be grateful for one of Ar-Gimilzôr's policies: the chief population of the Faithful had been in the west of Númenor before the King had commanded them to move east. Because the Faithful came to the eastern side of the island before the destruction of Númenor, they were able to escape the disaster and sail to Middle-earth.

In addition to his heavy-handed policies against the Faithful, Ar-Gimilzôr completely neglected traditions long held even by the rebellious Kings before him, such as the tending of the White Tree of Númenor. The beautiful Tree, a symbol of the ancient friendship between Númenor and the West, fell into a decline. Ar-Gimilzôr was also the first of the Kings to never ascend the Meneltarma and display reverence to Eru.

Ar-Gimilzôr wed a woman "of great beauty", whose name was Inzilbêth. He did not know at the time that she herself was of the Faithful, and thus later in their marriage "there was small love between them". Inzilbêth passed on her beliefs to their elder son Inziladûn, whereas their second son Gimilkhâd was much more like his father. Ar-Gimilzôr would thus have preferred to see the Sceptre go to the hand of his younger son, but he could not change the laws of Númenor, and was succeeded by Inziladûn, who took the Quenya name of Tar-Palantir.

Etymology
Gimilzôr in Adûnaic means "star flame" (gimil "silver" and zôr "flame"); which in Quenya is Tar-Telemnar

Gimilzôr is also given as the Adûnaic name of Elros "star-foam" Since zôr also means "foam".

Other versions of the legendarium
Ar-Gimilzôr's date of death is given by the Tale of Years as Second Age 3175 but by The Line of Elros: Kings of Númenor as Second Age 3177.
}}Tar-Minastir (Second Age 1474 – 1873, aged 399 years) was the 11th King of Númenor, ruling for 138 years, from Second Age 1731 to 1869. Before becoming King he used the name Minastir. He succeeded his aunt, Queen Tar-Telperiën. Tar-Minastir was the grandson of King Tar-Súrion. His name meant "Tower Watcher".

Sauron invaded Eriador from Calenardhon in 1695 and the realms of Eregion fell. Further he advanced to Lindon and besieged Rivendell. In 1700 Tar-Minastir sent a navy under the command of Ciryatur to save Lindon. Ciryatur's forces stopped Sauron's army in the clash known as Battle of the Gwathló and reinforcements from Lindon and Tharbad helped defeat the enemy. Sauron retreated back to Mordor.

Starting around the 1800s, Númenóreans began establishing permanent settlements in Middle-earth, including the Haven of Umbar.

Tar-Minastir abdicated in 1869 and was succeded by his son, Tar-Ciryatan.
Galadriel (S, pron. [ɡaˈladri.el]) was a Noldo, one of the Calaquendi, and arguably the most famous and powerful elf of the Third Age. She was one of the bearers of the Three Rings, of Nenya, and with it kept her realm of Lothlórien free of stain.

History
Fostering and Life in Aman
When a fourth child was born to Finarfin, prince of the Noldor, and Eärwen, princess of the Teleri, her father named her Artanis, Which is a composite of arta and nís; it means "Noble Woman" in Quenya. She was unusually tall and strong as she grew, and so Eärwen’s name for her was Nerwen, "man-maiden". But the most distinctive thing about her was her hair, which was of a rare silver-gold color, and dazzlingly bright. Her hair reflected her unusually diverse heritage, being half Telerin (typified by silver hair), a quarter Noldorin (typified by dark hair), and a quarter Vanyarin (typified by golden hair). Despite her mixed blood, she was identified as a princess of the Noldor, as her father was the third son of Finwë, High King of the Noldor. Yet according to Tolkien’s later accounts she lived with her Telerin relatives in Alqualondë.

It was in Alqualondë that she met Teleporno, a young Telerin prince probably the son or grandson of Olwë (which would make him Artanis’s uncle or cousin)*. They eventually fell in love, and he called her in his own Telerin tongue Alatáriel (later Sindarinized as Galadriel and semi-Quenyarized as Altáriel) meaning "Maiden Crowned with Radiant Garland", which referred to her hair. She had another admirer as well: her half-uncle, Fëanor. Fëanor, being a lover of beauty and brilliance, noted her shining hair. He may have been inspired by her tresses to make the Silmarils, both being said to capture the light of the Two Trees. He begged her to spare him some of her hair, but she refused him a single hair three times and he gave up. She had unusually strong powers of mental perception, and when she looked into his mind, she saw only darkness, hinting at Fëanor's evil nature.

During the Darkening of Valinor, she was just as fiery and visionary as Fëanor, although she despised him. During the troubles that followed she took no part in the atrocities against the Teleri during the Kinslaying of Alqualondë, but urged Teleporno her beloved to sail across the Sea to Middle-earth by her side. He agreed for her sake, and so they both came under the Ban of the Valar. Their crossing to Middle-earth by ship was the exception—Fëanor and his sons had sailed stolen Telerin ships, while the vast majority of the other Noldor under Fingolfin crossed the Helcaraxë on foot.

First Age
Once in Beleriand they were welcomed by King Thingol of Doriath, as both were Telerin in origin. Thingol knew nothing of what had happened to his brother Olwë and the Calaquendi, and they brought news. But they said nothing about the Kinslaying. Teleporno was Sindarinized as Celeborn, and Artanis adopted Teleporno’s pet name for her, Alatáriel, in its Sindarin form: Galadriel.
After the rest of the Noldor arrived in Beleriand and the great Dagor-nuin-Giliath was fought, Galadriel re-established contact with her brothers, though her hate for the orphaned sons of Fëanor was still strong. She learned much from Melian during her days in Doriath, and occasionally spent time in Nargothrond with her eldest brother Finrod Felagund. She and Melian became friends, speaking often to one another about Valinor. Melian was eager to learn of the happenings of the Exile, but Galadriel would tell her nothing of what occurred after the death of the Trees. Eventually, however, as Melian’s guesses became more shrewd and accurate, Galadriel told her more, except for that of the death of Finwë, the Kinslaying, and the burning of the Ships at Losgar. Melian was able to discern some, and the rest came in rumors to Thingol’s ears. At last, egged on by the accusing words of Thingol, Angrod told all. Galadriel escaped being removed from Doriath by Thingol’s sympathy to the houses of Finarfin and Fingolfin for the wrongs they had suffered. All the same, she moved for a time to Nargothrond to live with Finrod. By 300, however, she had gone back to live in Doriath. Presumably, her husband lived with her there in peace.

Precisely where the twain were during the destruction of Nargothrond in 495 and Doriath in 503/506 is unknown; perhaps they were there during the sacks and escaped one or both. It is not unlikely that after the destruction of the latter they went either to the Havens of Sirion or with their Telerin kin to the Isle of Balar with Círdan. If the former, they escaped the Third Kinslaying there, and either went into hiding in Beleriand or, more probably, went to the Isle of Balar. During the War of Wrath, given the choice whether to stay in Middle-earth or not, they surprisingly decided to remain. Galadriel was still very proud, even arrogant, and refused to accept the pardon of the Valar. Either Celeborn felt the same way, or stayed for the sake of his wife.

Second Age
Galadriel and her husband stayed in Lindon, the kingdom of Galadriel’s grandnephew Gil-galad. There they stayed for a while, ruling over a fiefdom of Noldor. Eventually they established or moved to Eregion. Celebrimbor lived there, and gradually grew in importance among the smiths. Perhaps because of Galadriel’s detestation (Celebrimbor being the last of the House of Fëanor, though Celebrimbor had refused and forsaken them for their evil deeds), Celeborn and Galadriel made contact with the Nandor of Amdír, who dwelt in a forest realm called Lórinand. They eventually crossed the Hithaeglir through Khazad-dûm and relocated to there, becoming great among the Wood-elves.

Though Galadriel urged Celebrimbor against it, the Noldo collaborated with Annatar on the great process of making Rings of Power. By Annatar’s help, the Elves of Eregion created many rings, but both Celebrimbor and Annatar created greater rings of their own in secret. Celebrimbor wrought the Three Rings of the Elves, which were far more powerful than the lesser rings. Annatar, however, wrought the One Ring. When he placed it on his finger, the Elves were aware of his treachery, and took off their rings. Celebrimbor, afraid for his life but even more for the safety of the Three Rings, sent them to two of the Wise: Narya and Vilya for Gil-galad (who eventually gave Narya to Círdan), and Nenya for Galadriel. Very few even of the Eldar knew who hid each of these Rings. Celebrimbor was slain by Sauron not long after, and Eregion was laid waste. But the Three Rings were safe.

In time Amdír, King of Lórinand, was slain in the Battle of Dagorlad during the War of the Last Alliance. Celeborn may have participated in the war, but the greatest effect it had on the twain (and Lórinand) was the destruction of Sauron and the loss of the One Ring. Galadriel was now free to use her ring. With Nenya, the Ring of Water, Galadriel made the realm of Lórinand even greater. With the power of her ring, she protected it from the intrusion of evils throughout the Third Age.

Third Age
When Amroth son of Amdír perished, Celeborn and Galadriel ruled Lórinand (now known as Lothlórien or Lórien) jointly, and were called the Lord and Lady. Lothlórien blossomed, and Galadriel planted the mallorn seeds brought with her from Lindon, the only mallorns east of the Sea. They established Caras Galadhon, and the realm of Lothlórien was one of light and life. It was during their days of power and glory in Lothlórien (either before or after the deaths of Amdír and Amroth) that Galadriel bore her first and only child: a daughter exceedingly fair named Celebrían. She married Elrond, a close friend of Galadriel’s and bearer of Vilya after the death of Gil-galad during the Alliance. Celeborn and Galadriel had three grandchildren by her, one of whom, Arwen, they were especially close to. But Celebrían was waylaid and tortured by Orcs in 2509, and passed West over the sea.

In 2463 the White Council was formed. Galadriel, being one of the Wise and the greatest threat to Sauron alive, was one of the members. Celeborn may have been as well, but this is not known for sure. She was a good friend of Gandalf, and recommended that he be made head of the Council. But this distinction fell instead to Saruman, whom she distrusted.

During the War of the Ring, Galadriel met the Fellowship of the Ring in 3019. She especially was attentive to the Hobbit Frodo Baggins, who was the bearer of the One Ring. She showed him Nenya, and let him gaze into her mirror of seeing. He offered her the One Ring, and despite the extreme temptation, she resisted it successfully. She sent the Fellowship off on their quest furnished with gifts. The two most important gifts she gave were to Aragorn, whom she knew well and liked, and a dwarf named Gimli. To Aragorn she gave the Elfstone, which she and her daughter Celebrían had worn. She was unsure as to what to give Gimli, and asked what he wanted. After complimenting her beauty, he requested a single strand of her hair. Galadriel remembered the posing of a similar question by Fëanor, but had searched Gimli’s heart and knew that his intentions were pure. She rewarded him with three strands, which he was later to put into an imperishable crystal in memory of her.

Not long after the departure of the Fellowship she received the resurrected Gandalf. She reclothed and refurnished him, giving him a new staff. After Gandalf left, Lothlórien was subjected to three successive attacks by armies coming out of Dol Guldur. By the power of her Ring they were thrice repulsed. Celeborn then led an attack on Dol Guldur itself. Once the dark fortress was in the hands of the Galadhrim, Galadriel came, threw down its walls, and purified it of its evil. It was her last act of power, for the One Ring was destroyed, and the strength of Nenya waned and eventually vanished almost completely.

Return to Valinor
Galadriel attended the wedding of Aragorn with Arwen, then returned to Lothlórien. But in 3021, two years later, she bade farewell to Celeborn her husband and went West to Valinor. With her went the other two bearers of the Rings, Gandalf and Elrond, and Frodo and Bilbo Baggins who had borne the One Ring. They passed West, and came never again to Middle-earth. There in Valinor Galadriel must have tried to heal Frodo of his spiritual wounds. Whether she was successful or not is unknown. But sometime later during the Fourth Age she received Celeborn, her husband. And in Fourth Age 120, it is said, she received Gimli her admirer, who died in Valinor.

Characteristics
Galadriel was very beautiful, her hair being the most notable feature about her. It reminded the Eldar of the light of the Two Trees. Galadriel, at least in her earlier years, was of a somewhat proud and rebellious nature. She was free-spirited, and during her time in Aman had many dreams of wide unexplored lands. Her favorite brother was Finrod, for he, too, shared this vision. She could explore the minds and hearts of others, and her gaze was seeing. It may be because of her unusual beauty and power that she became proud.

But by the Third Age she is also seen to act with wisdom and gentleness. In The Lord of the Rings, she appears very gentle, firm, and wise. She was revered even more than Celeborn by the Galadhrim and all who met her.

Etymology
Other Versions of the Legendarium
There is a bit of befuddlement and confusion in the story of Galadriel, which Tolkien revised multiple times. Originally, and in the published Silmarillion, Galadriel supported Fëanor and even fought at Alqualondë. Then she met Celeborn in Doriath, for Celeborn was one of the Sindar. This earlier account explains the difficulty of Celeborn and Galadriel being so closely related (the Eldar did not marry that close). Though it’s possible that Galadriel and Celeborn rebelliously defied the customs and laws, it is primarily because of this difficulty that some Tolkienists take the earlier account as canon.

The later account is the one used here, being considered more canon by most (being written and used later than other accounts). It is found in The Peoples of Middle-earth.
:Galadriel is played by Cate Blanchett. Galadriel narrates the Prologue, explaining the creation of the Rings of Power and the War of the Last Alliance. Earlier plans considered were to have either Frodo or Gandalf narrate the Prologue, but this was dropped: Frodo was not alive until thousands of years after these events happened, and although Gandalf was alive, he was not present in Middle-earth at the time; the Wizards came some one thousand years after the Prologue ends. Thus Galadriel narrates the Prologue, because she had first-hand accounts of this history and actively participated in its events.
:Galadriel frequently seems to be consulting telepathically with Elrond; there is some indication from the books that the two were able to communicate in some way, but the specific instances in the movies have no direct counterparts in the books. Further, the notion that Galadriel would send her warriors to assist at Helm's Deep is practically unthinkable in the context of the books, where Lothlórien was itself under threat of attack at the time.

When a fourth child was born to Finarfin, prince of the Noldor, and Eärwen, princess of the Teleri, her father named her Artanis, which is "noble woman".

Etymology
Galadriel is a Sindarin name translated by Tolkien as "glittering garland", "Maiden crowned with gleaming hair", and "maiden crowned with a radiant garland". It has been suggested that Galadriel consists of galad ("light, radiance") + rî ("crown") + iell ("daughter"). Tolkien notes that the element galad had no relation to Sindarin galadh ("tree", or Silvan galad "tree"), but that such a connexion often was made and her name then became Galadhriel.

2002: Vivendi's The Fellowship of the Ring:
:Galadriel, voiced by Jennifer Hale, is the narrator of the Prologue and the Epilogue, and appears in Lothlórien.

:Galadriel is a non-playable character, who narrates cutscenes. She is first seen during The Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria Book VI The Shadowy Abyss. The player can find her at Caras Galadhon.

History of Arda
The Ages of the Children of Ilúvatar chronicle major events in the history of the Eruhíni.

The First Age of the Children of Ilúvatar began during the Years of the Trees when the Elves awoke at Cuiviénen. This marked the start of the years when the Children of Ilúvatar were active in Middle-earth. Later in the First Age the second kindred, Men, and Ilúvatar's adopted children, the Dwarves, also awoke.

Tolkien wrote that the later Ages lasted about 3,000 years, though this duration was not fixed and he felt that the Ages 'sped up' over time. Each ended following the completion of some major event in the history of the Children of Ilúvatar.

Other versions of the legendarium
In some texts Tolkien referred to the 'First Age of Middle-earth' or the 'First Age of the World' rather than the 'First Age of the Children of Ilúvatar'. These variations had earlier starting points, extending the First Age back to the creation of Arda, but consistently ended with Morgoth's defeat in Beleriand.

The terms 'First Age of the Sun' and 'Ages of the Sun' are commonly used by many fans, but do not appear anywhere in Tolkien's writings. The 'First Age of the Sun' in this conception is held to begin with the first rising of the Sun and continue until Morgoth's defeat nearly 600 years later. While this is at odds with Tolkien's statements that the first age was the longest by far it is a common misapprehension because the subsequent ages all took place entirely during the Years of the Sun.
Shelob's Lair, also known as Torech Ungol was a maze of dank web-strewn tunnels. This labyrinthine lair of the huge spider-like being known as Shelob. It lay at the head of the pass of Cirith Ungol in the mountains of Ephel Dúath on Mordor's western border.
The Battle of the Powers was the great battle between the Valar and Melkor that took place soon after the awakening of the Elves. The battle was fought mainly because the elves awakened. The forces of Valinor easily triumphed in this battle. Melkor was driven from Middle Earth back to his fortress of Utumno, and a guard was placed over Cuiviénen to protect the newly-awakened Firstborn from his evil influence. However, this battle marred the area upon which it was fought. Its landscape was changed forever.

The Ered Wethrin ("Mountains of Shadow") was a mountain range in the north of Middle-earth in the First Age.

In the south, it was an east-west range that divided Dor-lómin and Mithrim to the north from Beleriand to the south, then in the east it curved around to the northwest, forming the boundary of Hithlum. A line of hills to the southwest formed the southern boundary of Nevrast, while the Mountains of Mithrim were a northwesterly spur that separated Dor-Lomin from Mithrim.

Several rivers arose in the Ered Wethrin, including Narog, Teiglin, and Sirion. The easternmost point of the Ered Wethrin reached nearly to the Echoriath, forming a steep-sided valley through which the upper Sirion ran.

The Ered Wethrin disappeared beneath the waves at the end of the First Age.
