'''Aragorn II''' ([[Third Age]] March 1, 2931 – [[Fourth Age]] 120, aged 210 years{{ref|1}}) was the son of [[Arathorn II]] and [[Gilraen]]. He was a [[Chieftain of the Dúnedain]] and a direct descendant through many generations of [[Isildur]], the last [[High King]] of both [[Arnor]] and [[Gondor]]. Aragorn would become the greatest man of his time, leading the [[Men of the West]] against [[Sauron]]'s forces, helping to destroy the [[One Ring]], and reuniting the [[Reunited Kingdom|Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor]].

==History==
===Early Life===
When Aragorn was two years old, his father was slain when a [[Orc]] arrow pierced his eye. As was the tradition of his people, Aragorn was fostered in [[Rivendell]] by [[Elrond]]. By Elrond's order, his identity was kept secret, as he feared he would be slain like his father and grandfather. Aragorn was named '''''[[Estel]]''''' ([[Sindarin]] for "Hope") instead, and was not told about his heritage until he came of age in [[Third Age 2951|2951]].

Elrond revealed to "Estel" his true name and ancestry in 2951, when Aragorn was twenty years old, and delivered to him the shards of [[Narsil]] and the [[Ring of Barahir]]. The next day, in the woods of Rivendell, Aragorn met and fell in love with [[Arwen Evenstar|Arwen]], daughter of Elrond, who had newly returned from [[Lórien in Middle-earth|Lórien]].
[[Image:Stephen Hickman - Aragorn and Arwen.jpg|thumb|200px|left|''Aragorn and Arwen'' by [[Stephen Hickman]]]]

===Life as a Ranger===
Aragorn took up his proper name as Aragorn II, sixteenth of the Chieftains of the Dúnedain, and went into [[The Wild]].
In [[Third Age 2953|2953]] he was not present in Rivendell for the last meeting of the [[White Council]]. Aragorn met [[Gandalf the Grey]] in [[Third Age 2956|2956]], and they became great friends. At Gandalf's advice he started to become interested in the [[Shire]], and became known around the area as '''''Strider'''''.
[[Image:Catherine Chmiel - Ecthelion,Thorongil and Boromir study.jpg|thumb|200px|right|"Thorongil" with [[Ecthelion II]], by [[Catherine Karina Chmiel]]]]
From [[Third Age 2957|2957]] to [[Third Age 2980|2980]] Aragorn took great journeys, serving in the armies of King [[Thengel]] of [[Rohan]], and Steward [[Ecthelion II]] of Gondor. Many of his tasks weakened [[Sauron]] and his allies, which during the [[War of the Ring]] helped the West survive. His name in Gondor and Rohan was '''''Thorongil''''' (Sindarin for "Eagle of the Star"), and with a few Gondorian ships he led a [[Surprise Attack on Umbar|Surprise Attack on the Havens of Umbar]], destroying many of their ships and slaying its lord. He later left Gondor to travel into the far East and South "exploring the hearts of men good and evil" and learning about the "plots and devices" of the servants of the Dark Lord. Later in 2980 he was in [[Lothlórien]], and there once again met Arwen. He gave her the heirloom of his House, the [[Ring of Barahir]], and Arwen pledged her hand to him in marriage.

Elrond gave his foster-son permission to marry his daughter, on the condition that he must first become king of both Gondor and Arnor, for only a king would be worthy of Arwen's hand. This may seem a harsh condition, but it should be noted that it is significantly more lenient than the closest precedent, King [[Thingol]]'s request that [[Beren Erchamion|Beren]] obtain a [[Silmaril]] from [[Morgoth]] before marrying his daughter [[Lúthien]].

==War of the Ring==
===Fellowship of the Ring and events preceding===
In the year [[Third Age 3001|3001]], as a now revealed [[Sauron]] continued to regain power in [[Mordor]], Aragorn began assisting [[Gandalf]] for news of [[Gollum]]. Gandalf suspected that the ring [[Bilbo Baggins]] found near Gollum's lake was in fact the [[One Ring]]. In [[Third Age 3018|3018]] after searching intermittently over the years, Aragorn finally overtakes Gollum in the [[Dead Marshes]] and takes him to Thranduil in Mirkwood to be held captive. He then returns west where he meets with Gandalf and learns of [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo Baggins]]' plan to leave the shire with the ring.

Aragorn and his [[Rangers of the North|Rangers]] kept watch over the border of the [[Shire]] waiting for sight of Frodo. While staying in [[Bree]], Aragorn crossed the paths of four hobbits in [[The Prancing Pony]]. Aragorn watched as the hobbits clumsily hid their names and intentions. He watched as [[Frodo Baggins]], the leader of the party, fell from a table and disappeared as he put the ring on. Aragorn, whose name was given as Strider, seemed to show no surprise, only annoyance at Frodo’s foolish vanishing act. He arranged for an interview that night, where he warned them of the [[Black Riders]] and [[Bill Ferny]], then bluntly requested that they use him as a guide. After some consideration, and a note given them by the forgetful [[Barliman Butterbur]] from Gandalf condoning him, Frodo agreed.

Aragorn’s plan to get to Rivendell was to head first toward [[Archet]] and bear right to [[Weathertop]]. After the [[Ambush at Weathertop]] and the wounding of Frodo, [[Meriadoc Brandybuck|Merry]] took over the position as leader of the Hobbits. After a while they met [[Glorfindel of Rivendell|Glorfindel]], a friend of Aragorn’s, and it was not much later that they arrived in Rivendell.
[[Image:Inger Edelfeldt - Death of Boromir.jpg|thumb|200px|right|Aragorn at the death of Boromir, by [[Inger Edelfeldt]]]]
Aragorn, when in Rivendell, switched cloaks from that of the Ranger to that of the Lord of the Dúnedain, the Elf-friend. He was elected as Gandalf’s second in the [[Fellowship of the Ring]], and served throughout their journeys together as his chief advisor.

Aragorn encouraged the taking of the [[Redhorn Pass]], which ended in disaster. He reluctantly conceded to Gandalf’s plan to pass through [[Moria]], though his sense of foresight warned him for Gandalf. Indeed, after Gandalf fell into the abyss with [[Durin’s Bane]], Aragorn was naturally elected leader of the company, despite some resentment by his companion [[Boromir (son of Denethor II)|Boromir]].

Aragorn again amazed the rest of the Fellowship by his apparent closeness to the people of [[Lothlórien]], and his friendship with [[Celeborn (Lord of Lórien)|Celeborn]] and [[Galadriel]]. Even at the [[Falls of Rauros]] he was undecided, leaving it to Frodo for the final decision. For though it was obvious he wished to go to [[Minas Tirith]] with Boromir, he yet felt that it was his duty to go where the [[Ringbearer]] chose.

===The early War of the Ring===

After Frodo escaped him and Boromir perished, he with the remaining members of the Fellowship, namely [[Legolas of Mirkwood|Legolas]] and [[Gimli Elf-friend|Gimli]], chose to try and save Merry and [[Pippin]] from the [[Uruk-hai]] that had ambushed them, forming the group that would later be known as the [[Three Hunters]].

He met [[Éomer]] in the fields of [[Rohan]], and an instant friendship formed, both feeling the honesty and lordliness of the other. Éomer took a risk for his sake, giving him horses, with the promise that one day soon Aragorn would return to [[Edoras]]. Aragorn, tracking the Hobbits, followed into Fangorn forest, where he met the resurrected [[Gandalf the White]]. After the restoration of [[Théoden]], he rode to [[Helm’s Deep]] to fight in the [[Battle of the Hornburg]]. There he, alongside his new-found “brother” Éomer, and King Théoden, marshaled the defense against [[Saruman]]’s army. When the Hornburg's gate was going to fall to enemy forces, Aragorn and Théoden led a cavalry charge that raised the morale of the tired forces fighting within the fortress. His revealed majesty upon the battlements of the Hornburg as he waited for the dawn caused some of the [[Dunlendings|Wild men]] to pause and shudder, and he heralded the return of Gandalf with [[Erkenbrand]].

After Pippin’s terrifying experience with the [[Orthanc-stone]], Gandalf presented it in a formal manner to Aragorn, its rightful master, who hinted that it would be used by him eventually. After the departure of Gandalf and Pippin to Minas Tirith, he rode for a while longer with Théoden, meeting up with his friend [[Halbarad]] of the North, [[Elladan]] and [[Elrohir]], and a company of staunch and fearless Rangers. Elladan and Elrohir gave him a message from Elrond: "''The days are short. If thou art in haste, remember the [[Paths of the Dead]]''". Halbarad bore a gift from the Lady Arwen – the [[Standard of Elendil]]. Aragorn knew the path set before him.

===Return of the King===
A little while later Aragorn took his companions and his rangers and set out for [[Dunharrow]], departing from the King’s company. His course was clear: to take the Paths of the Dead, to summon the [[Dead Men]]. In Dunharrow, he met the lady [[Éowyn]], who had fallen in love with him. After making it clear that he could not accept her love, he turned towards the evil road with the dawn.

The [[Grey Company]] passed through the [[Dark Door]] and the [[Dwimorberg]], the Dead following, and coming at last to the [[Black Stone of Erech]], Aragorn summoned them to his aid. They drew their swords and blew their horns in answer, and swept down upon the [[Corsairs]] at [[Pelargir]] drove the mariners away. Aragorn released them, and took the [[Black Ships]] north to Minas Tirith, where the [[Battle of the Pelennor Fields]] raged. The Standard of Elendil broke forth, and his Dúnedain swept down, giving the final blow to the army of [[Gothmog (Lieutenant of Morgul)|Gothmog]]. The counterattacked army of [[Sauron]] crumbled utterly. But Aragorn did not enter the city.
[[Image:Luca Michelucci - 1999 - March.jpg|thumb|175px|left|The Black ships, by [[Luca Michelucci]]]]
Aragorn, furling his banner, appointed [[Imrahil]] the temporary lord of the City, as the law demanded. Eventually, however, Aragorn did come to the [[Houses of Healing]], where he tended and restored Merry, Éowyn, and [[Faramir son of Denethor II|Faramir]], in accordance with the prophecy “''The hands of the king are the hands of a healer, and so shall the rightful king be known''”. Aragorn then left the city, hooded and cloaked, and yet the people of Minas Tirith followed him, for they had heard rumors. Yet when in the morning they saw the banner of [[Dol Amroth]], they wondered if the Return of the King had been but a dream.

Aragorn held [[Last Debate|council]] with his trusted companions, namely Gandalf, Éomer, Imrahil, and Elrond’s sons – Halbarad had fallen in battle. He agreed to draw forth the forces of [[Mordor]] for the benefit of the [[Quest of the Ring]], and so arranged matters for the [[Battle of the Morannon]]. After the Destruction of the Ring in [[Orodruin]] and victory at the [[Morannon]], Aragorn returned at last in the triumphant manner that befitted his position. He was crowned at the gates of Minas Tirith, winning the hearts of the people of [[Gondor]]. Gandalf took him up the slopes of Mount [[Mindolluin]], and there Aragorn found the scion of [[Nimloth]], the symbol of his mastery of the [[Reunited Kingdom]]. He wedded Arwen on Midsummer's day of 3019, and then was forced to bid his old friends farewell. He turned back to his new kingdom as the [[Fourth Age]] dawned and the Ringbearers left the shores of Middle-earth forever.

===Reign as Elessar===

Aragorn ruled the [[Reunited Kingdom]] of Gondor and Arnor until year 120 of the [[Fourth Age]]. He died after 210 years of life and 122 years of rule. His wife Arwen, now mortal, gave up her life shortly afterwards in year 121, aged 2,901.

He founded the [[House of Telcontar]], and was succeeded by his son [[Eldarion]]. He also had a number of daughters, whose names were not recorded.

Through his ancestor Elendil, Aragorn was a descendant of the [[Númenóreans]], great [[Men]] who were granted long lives by the [[Valar]]. Though [[Númenor]] was destroyed, its people lived on as the [[Dúnedain]], and like their ancestors they too were long-lived. Thus Aragorn lived to a great age, finally passing on at 210 years.

==Etymology==
The name '''Aragorn''' has long been without a clear etymology. [[Ruth S. Noel]] and several others proposed "King of the Tree"{{ref|2}}, but [[J.R.R. Tolkien]] specifically said that this was not the case{{ref|3}}. [[David Salo]] deduces "Having Kingly Valor" {{ref|4}} from Tolkien's cryptic "'Kingly Valour (for so is that name interpreted)"{{ref|5}}. This is still the most often cited etymology; Robert Ireland's ''[[A Tolkien Dictionary]]'' gives the variation "Royal Zeal"{{ref|6}}. [[Carl F. Hostetter]] proposed the meanings "King of the Globe" or "King of the Hill" in his analysis of the [[King's Letter]]{{ref|7}}. In "Words, Phrases & Passages in ''The Lord of the Rings''", a late 1950's manuscript by Tolkien, the most clear, and apparently final, thoughts of Tolkien indicate the name means '''"Revered King"''', from ''[[aran]]'' "king" and ''ngorn'' "dreaded, revered"{{ref|8}}.

==Other versions of the legendarium==
In the earliest unpublished versions of ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'' (see ''[[The History of The Lord of the Rings]]''), the character that later became Aragorn was called '''''[[Trotter]]''''' instead of Strider, and was a [[Hobbit]] instead of a [[Men|Man]]. He had wooden feet, because he had once traveled to Mordor and been tortured there.

==Portrayal in adaptations==

In Ralph Bakshi's animated film [[Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings|The Lord of the Rings]], Aragorn is voiced by [[John Hurt]]. Some critics have accused this character of looking too much like a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotypes_of_Native_Americans stereotype of a Native American].

In the [[Rankin/Bass]] animated version of [[Rankin/Bass' The Return of the King|The Return of the King]], Aragorn is voiced by [[Theodore Bikel]].

[[Robert Stephens]] provided the voice of Aragorn in [[The Lord of the Rings (1981 radio series)|the 1981 radio series]].

In [[Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings]], Aragorn is played by [[Viggo Mortensen]], though originally, [[Stuart Townsend]] was cast in the role. Townsend was deemed too young. Mortensen had just two weeks to train for his first scene, the standoff with the [[Nazgûl]] at [[Weathertop]]. Mortensen portrays Aragorn full of self-doubt; a change that was presumably made to fit him in the modern "anti-hero" jacket. He shows great trouble over the choice whether or not he should become king, whereas in the book, there is no doubt of his purpose to return as the king from the very first time his lineage is revealed.

<p> The quest to be or not to be a Tolkien fan began when my mind started conjuring up various hypothesis regarding his genius's plot holes. <br> My regard for his work grows as I understand the efforts he made to create a mythology. At times I wonder, why he wrote certain stories in a certain way, for indeed writing is an expression, and I think there was a certain idea he wanted to convey. So my quest continues as my mind ponders these mysteries of Tolkien </p>
<p> Other than this particular obsession, I have a general interest in mythology. I think when people are given abstract ideas, they tend to comprehend it by giving fillers to the abstract idea from their known world. What has this to do with myth making? Absolutely everything. This is a quest that I haven't made much progress on.</p>
<p> Currently I am trying to link these two quests and coming to terms with everything else I am supposed to do ;). Anything else about me, I find it boring to describe.</p>
== Title changes, language questions ==

I've read WP's article on editing, but it says nothing on changing the title. How do you change the title? I mean, I saw [[Long Horn Cotton]], I've checked the genealogies, and it's Long Hom. Some of the language headings are incorrect too - especially the [[:Category:Adûnaic_words|Adûnaic]] ones. And do we need a clearer entry on [[:Category:Rohirric_words|Rohirric]], because this is Old English and Rohirian (the word Tolkien used for it) mixed together... [[User:Ederchil|Ederchil]] 07:13, 13 January 2008 (EST)

:Hello there Ederchil, first I wanted to thank you for your recent edits, it is always nice to have a new face around and you've been doing a great job. There should be a move button next to History and you can move the article to the correct title, I've gone ahead and fixed the Long Hom Cotton article. We usually try and bring up the move on the talk page before moving, but for obvious spelling mistakes such as that one it is okay to just move it without asking.
:One thing I always forget as well, when we want to link to Categories we have to add a colon in front, like <nowiki>[[:Category:Rohirric words|Rohirric]]</nowiki>, otherwise it doesn't display the text and just adds the article to said category.
:I agree with both of your statements on Adûnaic and Rohirric words, if you can try to cite your sources that would be great and we can eliminate any errors. Thanks for your input and let me know if I can help with anything at all. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 14:18, 13 January 2008 (EST)
== Ugluk fanfiction ==

Hyar: i'm sorry to accuse you like this but a friend of mine noticed what appears to be some extreme extrepolation in the [[Ugluk]] article. I had a check through the history and noticed that it all changed to that status with your rewrite. Now i know i dont know everything about the texts but what are your sources for Ugluk's company meeting Gollum, along with a preliminary meeting with grishnakh and specific information on how Ugluk's company came about? It's certainly not anywhere in the actual book Lord of the Rings. [[User:Dr Death|Dr Death]] 13:48, 17 January 2008 (EST)

:Don't be sorry! The sooner we cite everything in the articles the better. At the bottom I listed the other reference (aside from ''[[The Two Towers]]'') as "[[The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion]], "The Departure of Boromir,", "The Uruk-hai", this is indeed where the content you brought up came from. I'd definitely recommend this book if you don't have it already. It looks like [[Wayne G. Hammond|Hammond]] and [[Christina Scull|Scull]] found this information in a "Scheme" manuscript which is an unpublished timeline of events. I know little of this manuscript so I'll do some research on it, however I have the utmost respect for Hammond and Scull. I've been holding off on citations since hopefully by the end of the month, next month at the latest, we should be running on an upgraded version of MediaWiki which will allow us to install the same citation extension which Wikipedia uses. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 14:05, 17 January 2008 (EST)

:: Fair enoughski, however the question does arise: 'is it canon?' I think given the confusion that has arisen, it might be worth including a sort of 'other versions of the legendarium' or 'greater works' section in which that information is included and independently assessed since i dont think a footnote will suffice for what the casual reader (and even the dedicated reader: i really was miffed by it) might at first think to be a factual error. == Questions on proper form (besides proper comma usage) ==

Articles before proper names of Ages; should it be "in Second Age Numenor was really neat," or more like "in the Third Age the Hobbits were smoking?" It's given that particular dates within any certain age do not need a definite article (in F.A. 42 the elves all sailed the ocean blue) but I'm not sure which way I should format the other. Also, is there any way to flag articles that are in the process of major rewrites so that we are not doubling efforts? Lastly, if I just happened to be a great gift giver, would you and eight of your friends each want to recieve a nice piece of jewelry? [[User:Singe|Singe]] 00:38, 28 January 2008 (EST)

:"the Third Age" is the correct usage vs. simply "Third Age" and yes, you don't need to use "the" if you are stating a specific year of the age. Hm, flagging articles that are in the process of being rewritten is a good idea, until we create a template for such a notice, feel free to just mention so on the article's talk page. ==Pics on TolkienGateway==
Hello Hyarion, we from Ardapedia are wondering what type of license you use for pictures in TolkienGateway, do you ask for permission from each drawer him/herself? Do you use the common GNU-License like in Wikipedia? We would really like to get and add some new pictures on Ardapedia, but we strictly use licenses (like GNU, PD, and in some cases "copyrighted pics with the permission of the author"), thanks for your answer, --[[User:Sinthoras|Sinthoras]] 11:05, 13 February 2008 (EST)

:Hey there Sinthoras. One thing we definitely need to work on adding is licenses to all the images, as the licenses vary. We try to contact all of the artists for permission before uploading any of their work and so far I think everyone has stated as long as we aren't for-profit, credit them, and link back to their website, etc. then it's fine, we've yet to have someone not allow the images to be displayed. When we don't hear back or are unable to contact/find an artist we upload the images as "Fair use". I would recommend contacting the artists and asking for permission if you can as they tend to want to know who is using their images and I don't know of any that are available under the GNU FDL. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 18:21, 13 February 2008 (EST)
==Epessi and Epithets==
Is there any policy on including these in the article's title? It's obviously the case when dealing with disambigs, like [[Beren Erchamion]], [[Túrin Turambar]] or [[Dior Eluchil]]. However, it's unclear in the case of the kings of Rohan: compare [[Brytta Léofa]] and [[Fréaláf Hildeson]] with [[Théoden]] (not "Théoden Ednew"), and [[Éomer]] (not "Éomer Éadig"). Nor is it the case with [[Borondir]] ("Borondir Udalraph"). IMO it would look more "professional" if we would include such epithets and epessi in the title. -- [[User:Ederchil|Ederchil]] 13:07, 18 February 2008 (EST)

:Good question. I don't have a problem with adding them, as obviously we would include redirects from the common name. Up until this point we have tried to just use whatever name was mentioned the most in Tolkien's text as this is what the most people would be familiar with. My only concern would be it would turn a large percentage of links to Théoden, Éomer, etc. into links to redirects, and we probably don't want to bother with typing <nowiki>[[Théoden Ednew|Théoden]]</nowiki>. It also might add, if only minimally, some confusion for those who aren't familiar with "Théoden Ednew" or "Éomer Éadig". However these aren't huge negatives and if everyone else thinks it would be a good idea then I'm all for it. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 16:46, 18 February 2008 (EST)
==Translations==
I was disussing this with someone: there's apparently no good place where the names of all the characters and places are in translations of the book. I only found [http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_vertalingen_van_Engelse_namen_in_Arda this] on Dutch Wikipedia (presumably, other language wiki's have lists too). We already have such a list at Frodo, should we include such lists at other characters as well? <br>
Also, did you know [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_and_Leopard-Walk-Up-to-Dragon#Inspirations this]? Definately worth some research. -- [[User:Ederchil|Ederchil]] 04:46, 26 February 2008 (EST)

==Translations==
==Referencing==

I would appreciate much if you could turn on the <ref> tag. It would be nice to add where the details were found when writing/rewriting an article.

The story of 'The Faithful Stone' was published in the chapter [[The Drúedain]] of ''[[Unfinished Tales]]'', a posthumously published work of the [[J.R.R. Tolkien| Professor]]. [[Christopher Tolkien]] found the contents of this story in an unfinished essay which was mostly about the interrelations of the languages of the [[Middle-earth]].

In the notes that follow the story Christopher Tolkien points out how that his father not only wanted to emphasize the drastic difference between [[Hobbits|hobbits]] and [[Drúedain|drúedain]] in physical appearance, but also wanted to differentiate the magic of the drúedain from that of [[Dwarf|dwarves]]. This story is an illustration of the faithfulness of drúedain, as the title says and their magic - how drûgs are capable of transferring power to an object they made. This story may also strikes some as a miniature version of [[Sauron]]'s transfer of power to artifacts such as the One Ring and the foundation of [[Barad-dûr]](See footnote 11 in the chapter).

The story set in the [[First Age|first age]] is about the [[Drûg|drûg]] [[Aghan]] a great friend of [[Barach]], a forester of the [[House of Haleth|people of Haleth]]. When raiding [[Orcs|orcs]] entered the forest, Aghan started to guard Barach's home which was two miles away from the nearest village. But Aghan had to leave Barach's house for some days to aid his injured brother as he was a skilled leech and knew the remedies to orc poison. He left behind a "watch-stone": a figure carved in the shape of a Drúadan to guard Barach's house.

While Aghan was away, Barach's house was attacked by orcs who attempted to set it ablaze, but they were beaten off by a mysterious drûg. The drûg turned out to be the watch-stone to which Aghan had transferred some of his power. The legs of the statue were mutilated during the defense. Aghan suffered blistered legs around the same time as the watch-stone had defended Barach's house from the raiding orcs. The story ends with Aghan's words ''"Alas! If some power passes from you to a thing that you have made, then you must take a share in its hurts."''

{{ut-chapters}}
'''The Disaster of the Gladden Fields''' is a chapter in ''[[Unfinished Tales]]'', a posthumously published work of [[J.R.R. Tolkien]] edited and published by [[Christopher Tolkien]]. According to Christopher Tolkien, this is a 'late' narrative of the [[J.R.R. Tolkien| Professor]] written after the publication of [[Lord of the Rings]] and in the same time frame of narratives such as [[Cirion and Eorl]], [[Battles of the Fords of Isen]], [[the Drúedain]] and the philological essays cited in [[The History of Galadriel and Celeborn]].

This work is divided into two parts. The first part narrates the events that took place in [[Third Age|T.A.]] 2 upto the slaying of [[Isildur]] as a legend. The second part of the narration titled ''The sources of the legend of Isildur's death'' gives an account of the origin of the legend as surmises surrounding Isildur's death such as finding of [[Star of Elendil|Elendilmir]] after [[Aragorn II]] came to the crown of the [[Reunited Kingdom]] of [[Arnor]] and [[Gondor]].

==The Disaster==
The story begins with Isildur taking up Elendilmir and declaring his sovereignty over Arnor and Gondor. He had spent an year in Gondor after the [[War of the Last Alliance]] to restore its order and define its bounds. Hence, he was eager to see his wife and his youngest son [[Valandil]] who were at [[Rivendell]] in Elrond's care. Besides he also had a need for a counsel with [[Elrond]]. [[Meneldil]], Isildur's nephew bade him farewell at [[East Gate of the Bridge]] and Isildur and his company of two hundred war-hardened [[Dúnedain]] along with his three elder sons [[Elendur]], [[Aratan]] and [[Ciryon]] made their march to Rivendell through the east side of [[Anduin]].

They were attacked by a host of [[orcs]] on the thirtieth day of their journey, when they were four days march from [[Thranduil]]'s realm at the northern borders of [[Gladden Fields]]. Before the first attack began, Isildur ordered his esquire [[Ohtar]] to take the shards of [[Narsil]] and flee along with one other man to Rivendell. Isildur and his men successfully broke the first onslaught, and it seemed to the defenders that their enemy withdrew to forest. Isildur ordered his men to march forward but even before they had gone a mile the [[Orcs]] moved again and gradually surrounded them in a ring still staying out of range of the dreaded steel bows of [[Númenor]].

Elendur who was in his fathers's counsel asked Isildur whether he could use the [[One Ring]] against their enemy. But Isildur whose pride had fallen, dreaded the pain of touching the Ring and wished to give the ring to the Keepers of the Three. Even as they were taking counsel, the second onslaught began with a blast of horn. Ciryon was slain and Aratan was mortally wounded when he attempted to rescue his brother. When defeat was imminent Elendur returned to Isildur and as his last counselor ordered his father to flee from the battle with the Ring and to take it to the Keepers.

Isildur put on the Ring with a great cry of pain, but Elendilmir of the West blazed forth. Hence Isildur had to pull a hood over his head to vanish. But Elendur, who was most like his grandsire [[Elendil]] perished in the battle.

Isildur ran great distance and reached the banks of the Great River, where he shed all his armor but with just a single short sword in his belt plunged into the river. Even as he swam, the current swept him towards the tangles of the Gladden fields where the Ring betrayed him. Sudden despair came to him and he would have drowned himself, but the mood passed him as if a great burden had been taken away. He got out of the water, but was shot through the heart and throat with poison arrows by the lurking orc archers on the west bank. He fell back to the water without a single cry, with Elendilmir still on his brow. His body was never found by men or elves.

For more details on the battle see ''[[Battle of the Gladden Fields]]. ''

==The sources of the legend of Isildur's death==

There were three eye witnesses to this legend. Ohtar who delivered the shards of Narsil and his companion were two of them. The third was Elendur's esquire [[Estelmo]], who had heard the counsel taken between the father and the son at Isildur's parting. Estelmo was found alive under Elendur's body and all the others in Isildur's company were lost in the battle. The [[Woodmen]] were able to come and disturb the orcs before they could mutilate the bodies of the dead.

The legend of Isildur's death was formed only during the reign of [[Elessar]] in the beginning of the [[Fourth Age]]. The surmises such as Isildur had the Ring and had fled towards the river, his armor and great sword were found at the banks not far from Gladden fields and that there were orc archers on the west bank to intercept the escapees who fled the battle to the river was known. The fourth surmise surrounding the legend is that Isildur and the Ring had to be lost in the River together or separately. If Isildur still had the Ring when he reached the west bank, he could have easily eluded the orc archers and traveled to [[Moria]] or [[Lothlórien| Lórien]] with the supply of way bread and cordial which every Dúnedain carried in a sealed wallet in his belt. The belt and the wallet were not among the discarded gear found on the east bank.

It was revealed at the [[Council of Elrond]] that the Ring was found, sunk near the edge of Gladden fields close to the western banks and that no trace of Isildur's body was found. It was also known at that point that [[Saruman]] had been secretly searching that region.

When Aragorn II ascended to the throne, one of the first tasks he took up was to restore the [[palantir]] recovered from [[Saruman]] at [[Orthanc]]. When Orthanc was searched for its secrets, hoards of treasure were discovered. Elendilmir and a gold case attached to a fine chain was found among them kept in a hidden strong steel closet. Elendilmir (a white star of Elvish crystal set upon [[mithril]] fillet) descended from [[Silmarien]] to Elendil, was the sign of royalty of North Kingdom taken by Elendil. Elven smiths of Rivendell had made a copy of Elendilmir for Valandil and was borne by every King and Chieftian of North including Elessar. But it could not match the potency and ancestry of Elendilmir of the West. Aragorn never imperiled Elendilmir once it was recovered.

With the discovery of Saruman's hoard it was evident that Isildur could have only fallen to shallow water. For if he had fallen to deep waters, the water of the Great River would have taken his body to a great distance, and Elendilmir would never have been discovered. But the remnants of the body of Isildur was never to be found in Orthanc. The possibility that Saruman could have dishonored them in one of his furnaces still remains.

The Disaster of the Gladden Fields is a chapter in [[Unfinished Tales]], a posthumously published work of [[J.R.R.

The second part of the narration titled ''The sources of the legend of Isildur's death'' gives an account of the origin of the legend as surmises surrounding Isildur's death such as finding of [[Elendilmir]] after [[Aragorn II]] came to the crown of the [[Reunited Kingdom]] of [[Arnor]] and [[Gondor]].

==The Disaster==

Isildur ordered his men to march forward but even before they had gone a mile the Orcs moved again and gradually surrounded them in a ring still staying out of range of the dreaded steel bows of [[Númenor]].

Elendur who was in his fathers's counsel asked Isildur whether he could use the [[One Ring]] against their enemy. But Isildur whose pride had fallen dreaded the pain of touching the Ring and wished to give the ring to the Keepers of the Three.

Even as he swam the current swept him towards the tangles of the Gladden fields where the Ring betrayed him.

Elendilmir was a white star of Elvish crystal set upon [[mithril]] fillet descended from [[Silmarien]] to Elendil and was the sign of royalty of North Kingdom as taken by Elendil. Elven smiths of Rivendell had made a copy of Elendilmir for Valandil and was borne by every King and Chieftian of North including Elessar. But the potency and ancestry of Elendilmir of the West could not be matched. Aragorn never imperiled Elendilmir once it was recovered.

In [[Tolkien]]'s [[legendarium]] Fëanorian lamp appears mainly in the story [[Unfinished Tales|Of Tuor and his coming to Gondolin]]. It is described as a lamp that gave blue radiance from a flame trapped within a white crystal. These lamps were made in [[Valinor]] and the light from these lamps can not be quenched by wind or water. Even though [[Noldor]] were famous for these lamps, their secret was lost to them. Gelmir of [[Finarfin]]'s people had one of these lamps in his possession at his meeting with [[Tuor]].

Another instance when this lamp make an appearance in [[Tolkien]]'s writings is in the story of Narn i Chîn Húrin where [[Gwindor]], an elf who escaped from [[Angband]] had possession of this Noldorin lamp. When [[Beleg]] Cúthalion was slain by [[Túrin]], it was from the light of this lamp that Turin was revealed that he had slain his friend Beleg.
Another suggestion is, whenever a template is changed, ensure that the change is reflected wherever it is used. This is for the sake of the consistency of the wiki.

Nikolet: A few minor changes to the slightly obscure description in the paragraph concerning Eregion and other minor changes to remove obscurity regarding last alliance

'''Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age''' is the fifth and last part of ''[[The Silmarillion]]'' by [[J. R. R. Tolkien]]. It is relatively short, consisting of about 20 pages.

The work is a historical essay dealing with the preamble to the events described in ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'', and the events themselves, in the style of ''The Silmarillion''. The fact that those events are explored in a mere handful of pages suggests that if the events described in the rest of ''The Silmarillion'' had been written in the style of ''The Lord of the Rings'' they would have filled hundreds of volumes.

After Tolkien's death in 1973, [[Christopher Tolkien]] completed this part, assisted by [[Guy Gavriel Kay]]. ''Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age'' bears some similarities to [[Elrond]]'s narative in [[The Fellowship of the Ring]] during the chapter ''The Council of Elrond''; both do not divulge any details about how [[Arnor]] was destroyed and how [[Gondor]] became kingless. The closeness is perhaps intentional; as Elrond told the Second and Third Age through his eyes, the Silmarillion is suppose to be told through the point of the view of the [[Eldar]].

==Summary==
As the name implies, the events of the essay are focused around magical artifacts: the [[Rings of Power]].

The Elves of [[Eregion]] forged many rings, including nineteen Rings of Power. But [[Sauron]] had deceived them, for he made the [[One Ring]] for himself, which was the master of the rest.

However Sauron's plan failed: the Elves discovered his plot and discarded their Rings until they could be shielded from his influence. Sauron then waged war upon the Elves. During the war, many Elves were killed and the kingdom in [[Eregion]] destroyed. Sauron captured all the Rings of Power except the Three and he gave seven of them to Dwarves and nine to Men. But Sauron feared to assail [[Lindon]] as the Men of [[N&uacute;menor]] aided [[Gil-galad]], the mighty elvenking. Through out the [[Black Years]] or [[Days of Flight]] Sauron gathered to him all the evil things of [[Days of Morgoth]]. Hundreds of years later, the Men of N&uacute;menor decided to capture Sauron to demonstrate their might. As it is described in [[Akallab&ecirc;th]], Sauron was brought to N&uacute;menor as a slave; however, he soon corrupted most N&uacute;men&oacute;rians, encouraging them to replace their traditional reverence for [[Eru Il&uacute;vatar]] with worship of [[Melkor]], or [[Morgoth]], Sauron's previous master. Under Sauron's influence, the N&uacute;men&oacute;rians decided to challenge the [[Valar]] by invading [[Aman]]. As a result, N&uacute;menor was destroyed and sank beneath the waves.

Only a few survivors left N&uacute;menor before it was too late, and led by [[Elendil]] the Tall and his two sons [[Isildur]] and [[An&aacute;rion]], they had settled in [[Middle-earth]]. They created realms that were governed in N&uacute;men&oacute;rian style: Elendil ruled over [[Arnor]] in the North, and Isildur and Anarion ruled together in the great country of [[Gondor]] in the South. However, Sauron survived the disaster, and although he had lost his fair appearance, both he and his One Ring returned safely to his stronghold of old in the land of [[Mordor]].

Years passed, and Sauron, who had renewed his might, decided to attack the new realms while they were still weak. His onslaught failed, however, Elendil, his sons, and the Elven kings fought back. For many years the great coalition (The [[Last Alliance of Elves and Men]], as it became known) besieged Mordor. At last the host broke through to Sauron's fortress [[Barad-d&ucirc;r]]. Gil-galad and Elendil wrestled with Sauron and were slain; however, they managed to defeat Sauron. Isildur, Elendil's son approached Sauron's body and cut off his finger with the One Ring. In vain [[Elrond]] and [[Círdan]] tried to convince Isildur to destroy the ring in the fire of [[Mount Doom]] where it was made. But Isildur took it for his own and declared that it was his and his folk's, a consolation after the enormous loss of the war (beside the death of Elendil, his father, another of those who perished was his brother Anárion, who was killed during the siege of Barad-d&ucirc;r). Thus began the [[Third Age]] of Middle-earth.

Isildur himself died soon in a sudden ambush by a band of [[Orcs]] near [[Gladden Fields]], and the Ring that had betrayed him was lost in the great river [[Anduin]]. Heirs of royal blood were chosen to lead Arnor and Gondor. For a millennium, both realms enjoyed relative freedom and prosperity. However afterwards, Arnor became subject to attacks from the north-eastern kingdom of [[Angmar]]. More and more people fled from the North, and although Angmar was defeated by the beginning of the third millennium of Third Age, Arnor was no more. Its people were scattered, and its royalty decreased in number and fame; however they remained true to their N&uacute;menorian descent. They became the [[Rangers of the North]], protecting the paths of the North from the menace that came from the East.

As for Gondor, it prospered for much of the Third Age. However in the beginning of its third millennium, this began to change. Gondor was assailed by Orcs and Men from the nearby Mordor. For a long time, no one suspected that the same force that had driven the attacks upon Arnor was now fighting Gondor.

A thousand years earlier, several [[Wizards]] had come to the land: [[Saruman]], [[Radagast]], [[Gandalf]], and Two [[Blue Wizards]] named in Middle Earth as [[Morinehtar]] and [[Romestamo]]. Although it was unknown to the peoples of Middle-earth, they were emissaries from the West, sent on behalf of the [[Valar]] to help them obtain their freedom. For many centuries they were silent, and little was done by them apart from observation and counsel. However as the times darkened, they decided to take action against a mysterious dark force which seemed to dwell in the fortress of [[Dol Guldur]] amidst the forest of [[Mirkwood]]. During the attack, the force fled to [[Mordor]] and was revealed as Sauron, who was thought to have perished. And in the same year, the One Ring was found.

Sauron made war on Middle-earth again, but Frodo the Hobbit went to [[Mount Doom]] and destroyed the Ring, defeating Sauron. After this, it was made clear that Gandalf bore the Red Ring, [[Narya]].
