Hi everyone,

given the fact that the KES has dropped all of the videos from their pages - would it be okay to link to my article on this?

Either

https://thetolkienist.com/2014/12/02/31-days-tolkien-great-war-documentary-released-king-edwards-school-birmingham/
https://thetolkienist.com/2023/11/08/robert-gilson-memoirs-of-an-infantry-officer/

This provides more information than just a simple link to Vimeo and/ or the Webarchive.

However, given the fact this is my own site I would not want to do this myself.
Hi there,
given that Michael does know his stuff about this part of Tolkien's biography - should the date for him leaving Brooklands be changed to Sept 11?

As a tradition the Annual General Meeting of the GTS takes place on Friday, offering members the possibility of actively participating in the future of their society. Since 2003 the GTS has been inviting chairwomen and chairmen from Tolkien Societies all over the world in an effort to promote international relationships. Since 2006 the GTS has started adding more guests to the list with Alan Lee being the first guest of honour.
Billett Potter
Hello, I recently created a page on Billett Potter. I saw he already had one on Ardapedia and that one of the sources was a blog post from 2008 by you that mentioned (among other things) that he had cancelled his appearance at the Tolkien Thing 2008. The sentence citing the blogpost included more information than the post itself, so I assume a lot is just oral history now. Could you tell me more about Potter's planned participation at the event? Vielen Dank im voraus, MallornTea (talk) 02:17, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

:Thank you for mentioning it - I might turn this into a Tolkien MeMe for my blog, tbh. It would have been wonderful to have him but he had a good reason not to come. The background for the invitation was that the German Tolkien Society was the only TS at the time in the world, afaik, to have a photo of the Professor on their info leaflets, a photo taken by Billett, of course. (At least, we had it legally and paid for it - I can't speak for groups that simply abuse photographers' rights). ::Hi Morgan, I believe the largest literature only devoted SF convention has a lot to do with JRRT. Only it needs someone knowing more than me in the topic to edit the information. I wanted to attend Loncon in 2014, unfortunately didn't manage, but TS members won a costume competition there with their Valar costumes, maybe such information is a start? Surely there had to be more JRRT orientated stuff and there are people who attended it. But if you decide Worldcon has no use, then remove it. Only if so why keeping a pop culture oriented Comic-Con on the conventions list? AFAIK it is movies and games oriented, with literature being in minority. She said that the "set is incredible, the costumes are beautiful," and that "[e]verything to me that is the most important, and the most moving in the book, they've gotten on the stage".

The Unfinished index is an unfinished glossary-index of place-names occurring in The Lord of the Rings. Christopher Tolkien used the index while compiling his own smaller indices for The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.

Several quotes from the manuscript were included in The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion.

History
In his Foreword to the second edition of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien expressed a desire to produce an "accessory volume", with more information especially about linguistics. This volume would contain a "complete index, making full use of the material prepared by Mrs. N. Smith". Referring to the index in a draft letter, Tolkien wrote that:

Tolkien likely began preparing the index in 1953, continuing into at least 1954, but only completed a list of names of "places, natural features, and buildings". The unfinished index was used by Christopher Tolkien when compiling many of the glosses appearing in the indexes to The Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales.

Despite the statement in the 1956 draft letter, the manuscript of the index includes references to the Prologue and all books of The Lord of the Rings. Hammond and Scull have noted that the manuscript is "built up evidently in snatches of time, to judge by the great number of variations in Tolkien's handwriting".

The manuscript was sold by Christie's in 2002, and a description was featured in the catalogue Christie's Fine Printed Books and Manuscripts 24 May 2002.
From Christie's
TOLKIEN, John Ronald Reuel (1892-1973). Manuscript notes signed ("J.R.R. Tolkien" on page 3, and initial-signed at end), comprising detailed instructions for the index to The Lord of the Rings. 12 March 1958. 4 pages, 4to. With a typed questionnaire headed "Index questions," from Smith annotated by Tolkien in red, 2 pages, 4to.

TOLKIEN'S MANUSCRIPT NOTES FOR THE 'LORD OF THE RINGS' INDEX

Following publication of the final volume of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, demand grew among readers for an index to the monumental work and the publisher, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., eventually complied to these requests only after Tolkien himself sought an index for his own use. The managing director of the firm, Rayner S. Unwin offered the assignment to Mrs. Nancy Smith, an editor and family friend. Her husband, Bernard S. Smith, was a British foreign service officer who shared rooms at Oxford with Christopher Tolkien and Rayner Unwin.

Preparation of the index engendered some correspondence between Smith and Tolkien, who wanted the material to be divided into three parts: Persons, Places, and Things. Smith began the index in January of 1958, and it took four months to completion. The finished result, a carbon copy of which accompanies this lot, filled 84 single-spaced typed pages. Mrs. Smith was paid the standard rate of £5 per volume for her work.

Smith sent a two-page typed list of "Index questions," to Tolkien at the early stages of the project. He began annotating the margins in reply to the eight questions posed by Smith, but ended up writing out a four-page outline carefully defining his specific requirements for the index with numerous examples.

"The index is intended primarily for my personal use. I hope to prepare from it some sort of glossary/index such as readers' letters suggest is most desired. But its immediate uses will be: (a) correction (where needed of inconsistencies, in spelling or use, or errors in the present text; and (b) co-ordination of the nomenclature of The Lord of the Rings with other work."

He concludes, "I hope these notes on the queries will be useful. In any points where the compiler is in doubt a (?) query will really be sufficient, as it will warn me that there is an unclarity or doubt, which I can then consider." The index first appeared in published editions of the trilogy in 1962, and has continued to been included at the end of the final volume of subsequent editions of the trilogy to present.

Bülles has collaborated with Professor Michael D.C. Drout in research on J.R.R. Tolkien, assisted in the preparation of the academic yearbook Tolkien Studies, and contributed a few articles for the J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia.

He is the founding chairman of the German Tolkien Society (1997) and has been the European Representative of the Tolkien Society, UK. He has initiated the first regular annual academic conference in Germany on Tolkien (Tolkien Seminar) and is a co-founder of Ring*Con, Europe's largest and the first ever film trilogy convention.

A well-known speaker on various Tolkien-related events, he has given talks in the US, Canada, Switzerland, UK and Italy.
Bülles takes a special interest in international relationships between Tolkien societies throughout the world and since 2003 the GTS has been inviting chairmen and chairwomen to their annual main event, the Tolkien Thing, including Israel, Greece, Belgium and France. In 2005 he invited four European Tolkien societies to join a friendship agreement informing each member of the union to keep all others informed about events, publications etc. France, Belgium and Austria joined.

He is an honorary member of the Greek Tolkien Society and attended Cair Andros in 2007. He is also an honorary member of the German Tolkien Society.
The First Map of The Lord of the Rings refers to the earliest map of the western regions of Middle-earth that was drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien. The map has squares of 2 centimetre side and a map scale where 2 centimetres are the equivalent of 100 miles. It was redrawn and commented on by Christopher Tolkien in The Treason of Isengard (1989; chapter 15).

The First Map of the Lord of the Rings covers a larger area of Middle-earth than the General Map of Middle-earth or The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age map. It also shows the lands to the north of the Icebay of Forochel and the island of Tol Fuin west of the island of Himling off the coast of Forlindon in the Belegaer ocean. The sea west of the Icebay of Forochel was labeled as North Sea in pencil.
A label "Forodwaith (Northerland)" is written in the area between the river Baranduin and the river Gwathló and extends from south of the Sarn Ford to beyond the northern end of the Misty Mountains. There is no label "Eriador" on the map. However, J.R.R. Tolkien added "(or Eriador)" after "Forodwaith" on The 1943 Map of The Lord of the Rings. This and the absence of the name Eriador from earlier manuscripts suggest that Forodwaith was initially used as a name of the region that was later called Eriador.

A label "Westfold" was written to the south of a label "Dunland" west of the southern end of the Misty Mountains and north of the river Isen, but was struck through and reinserted west of Edoras, north of the northern foothills of the "Black Mountains". This and the use of the name Westfold for the land of the Westfolders, the invaders of Rohan in earlier drafts of The Two Towers suggest that Westfold was initially used as a name of the region that was later called Dunland.
:Thank you for mentioning it - I might turn this into a Tolkien MeMe for my blog, tbh. It would have been wonderful to have him but he had a good reason not to come. The background for the invitation was that the German Tolkien Society was the only TS at the time in the world, afaik, to have a photo of the Professor on their info leaflets, a photo taken by Billett, of course. (At least, we had it legally and paid for it - I can't speak for groups that simply abuse photographers' rights).
The Tolkien Thing (English: Tolkien Moot) is the main annual event of the German Tolkien Society and took place for the first time in 1999. As of this year about 125 members of the GTS and friends participate in a weekend of lectures, workshops and festivities all about Middle-earth and its creator J.R.R. Tolkien.
