In the first days after the rising of the [[Sun]], Ard-galen was a green plain with rich grass, reaching from [[Hithlum]] and the [[Ered Wethrin]] in the west to the [[Ered Luin]] in the east, and rising into highlands of [[Dorthonion]] in the south.

In the aftermath of the [[Dagor-nuin-Giliath]], the Battle-under-Stars that was fought when the Host of [[Fëanor]] was attacked in [[Mithrim]], the fleeing [[Orcs]] were hunted over the mountains and into the plain of Ard-galen. The Orcs were driven into the [[Fen of Serech]] and few escaped to return to Angband.<ref name="Return">{{S|Return}}</ref> Thereafter Ard-galen would be the site of many battles.

The next clash that occurred upon Ard-galen was the [[Dagor Aglareb]], the Glorious Battle in which Morgoth suddenly sent forth a host of Orcs to try the strength of the [[Elves]]. As the Orcs assaulted Dorthonion the armies of [[Fingolfin]] and [[Maedhros]] struck both their flanks. Again the Orcs were routed as the Elves pursued them across Ard-galen to the very gates of Angband, and none of the enemy’s soldiers survived.<ref name="Return"/>

During the [[Siege of Angband]], [[Glaurung]] assaulted Ard-galen and pushed the [[Noldor]] from Ardgalen, which he took and defiled, to Dorthonion and the [[Ered Wethrin]]. This victory was short-lived, however, and Glaurung was forced back to Angband when [[Fingon]] rode against him with a company of mounted archers.

The plain of Ard-galen was laid waste by rivers of flame and poisonous gases at the beginning of the [[Dagor Bragollach]]. Thereafter a desolate waste, it was renamed [[Anfauglith]] ("Gasping Dust").<ref>{{S|Fingolfin}}</ref>

The battle of [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] was fought in the plain, and the dead piled up in a hill in the midst of the plain, named ''[[Haudh-en-Ndengin]]'', the [[Hill of Slain]], by the [[Elves]], and ''[[Haudh-en-Nirnaeth]]'', the [[Hill of Tears]], and grass grew again upon the hill and nowhere else in [[Anfauglith]].<ref>{{S|Fifth}}</ref>

Finarfin is rare among the [[High Elves]] of the [[Undying Lands]] who did not leave and fall under the [[Doom of Mandos]], in that he is known primarily by his name in Sindarin, a language indigenous to [[Middle-earth]] and not thought to have been known or studied in Aman until after the Exiles were allowed to return at the end of the [[First Age]], save the possibility that Sindarin was learned from the Elves of [[Beleriand]] who died and went to sojourn in the [[Halls of Mandos]]. Finarfin was called [[Finrod]] in earlier versions of the [[legendarium]], and his son was named '''[[Inglor Felagund]]'''. As such he appears in the 1st edition of ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'' as Finrod. This was changed in later editions, but not all references to '''Inglor''' were removed, since in the later version, it is probably the Sindarin version of '''Ingalaurë'''. When a fourth child was born to [[Finarfin]], prince of the Noldor, and [[Eärwen]], princess of the [[Falmari|Teleri]], her father named her '''[[Artanis]]''', which is "noble woman". She was unusually tall and strong as she grew, and so Eärwen’s name for her was '''[[Nerwen]]''', "man-maiden". It is said among the Eldar that her hair had captured the light of the [[Two Trees]] in Valinor, which resulted a very unique and dazzling colour of gold and silver. According to a legend, this is how [[Fëanor]] conceived the idea of capturing the light of the trees inside the [[Silmarils]].
Despite her mixed blood, she was identified as a princess of the Noldor, as her father was the third son of [[Finwë]], [[High King of the Noldor]].

During the [[Darkening of Valinor]], she was very independent and visionary. She swore no [[Oath of Fëanor|oaths]] but the words of Fëanor concerning Middle-earth kindled a desire in her heart, as she was eager to see those wide unguarded lands and rule a realm of her own.
During the troubles that followed, it is unclear if she took any part in the [[Kinslaying of Alqualondë]]. However, accounts suggest she travelled among the second group led by Fingolfin, which joined the battle at [[Alqualondë]] late and without knowing how it had started. Some of that group had not participated in the killing, although it is not clear who and how many. Dismayed by the prophecy of [[Mandos]], her father Finarfin abandoned the march of the Noldor and returned to Valinor. In [[Beleriand]], Galadriel and her eldest brother [[Finrod Felagund]] came to [[Doriath]] as guests of [[Elu Thingol]], the King of Doriath. It was there she met [[Celeborn]], a kinsman of Thingol, who would become her husband and companion in Middle-earth<ref>{{S|13}}</ref>. When her brother Finrod departed to the [[Caverns of Narog]] to establish the stronghold of [[Nargothrond]], Galadriel did not go with him and remained in Doriath with her husband, though she occasionally visited her brother in Nargothrond.

During her days in Doriath, Galadriel became friends with Queen [[Melian]] the [[Maia]], and they spoke often to one another about Valinor.<ref name="Sil15">{{S|15}}</ref> Melian was eager to learn the causes of the [[Exile of the Noldor|Exile of the Noldor]], but Galadriel would tell her nothing of what occurred after the death of the Trees. Eventually, however, as Melian’s guesses became more shrewd and accurate, Galadriel revealed the tale to her, though still leaving out the death of Finwë, the Kinslaying, and the burning of the Ships at [[Losgar]].<ref name="Sil15"/> Melian was able to discern some of what was left unsaid, and still more came as rumors to Thingol’s ears. At last, egged on by the accusing words of Thingol, [[Angrod]] told all. Galadriel was not expelled from Doriath because of Thingol’s sympathy to the houses of Finarfin and Fingolfin for the wrongs they had suffered. All the same, she went to Nargothrond to live with Finrod for a time.<ref name="Sil15"/> Presumably, she returned to Doriath to live with her husband.

Galadriel did not have any significant role in the general course of events in the [[War of the Jewels]]. She and Celeborn survived, or even were not present in the [[Sack of Nargothrond|destruction of Nargothrond]] in {{FA|495}} and [[Sack of Doriath|Doriath]] in {{FA|503}}/{{FA|506}}. It is not unlikely that after the destruction of Doriath they went to the [[Havens of Sirion]] along with many survivors of Beleriand (or even with their Telerin kin to the [[Isle of Balar]] with [[Círdan]]). Thus they even survived the [[Third Kinslaying]], and after that, the [[War of Wrath]].

Given the choice whether to stay in Middle-earth or not, Galadriel and Celeborn surprisingly decided to remain. Galadriel was still very proud, even arrogant, and refused to accept the pardon of the [[Valar]] and therefore exiled herself in Middle-earth.

===Second Age===

After the War of Wrath, Galadriel and Celeborn came to [[Lindon]] with the other survivors of Beleriand. They ruled over the fiefdom of [[Harlindon]], which was composed mostly of [[Sindar]], under the [[Gil-galad|High King Gil-galad]]<ref>{{PM|X}}</ref>. Eventually the couple moved to a new land called [[Eregion]] in far eastwards of Lindon. It was ruled by [[Celebrimbor]], a grandson of Fëanor and distant cousin of Galadriel. They dwelt there for a time and Galadriel was probably present during the crafting of the [[Rings of Power]]. Eventually Galadriel and Celeborn made contact with the [[Nandor]] of [[Amdír]], who dwelt in a forest realm called [[Lórinand]] across the [[Misty Mountains]]. They crossed the [[Hithaeglir]] through [[Moria|Khazad-dûm]] and relocated to there, becoming great among the [[Silvan Elves|Wood-elves]].

Celebrimbor and the jewelsmiths of [[Gwaith-i-Mírdain]] collaborated with [[Annatar]] on the great process of making Rings of Power.<ref name="SilV">{{S|V}}</ref> By Annatar’s help, the Elves of Eregion created many rings, but both Celebrimbor and Annatar created greater rings of their own in secret. Celebrimbor wrought the [[Three Rings]] of the Elves, which were far more powerful than the lesser rings. Annatar, however, wrought [[the One Ring]]. When he placed it on his finger, the Elves were aware of his treachery, and took off their rings. Celebrimbor, afraid for his life but even more for the safety of the Three Rings, sent them to two of the [[Wise]]: [[Narya]] and [[Vilya]] for Gil-galad (who eventually gave Narya to [[Círdan]]), and [[Nenya]] for Galadriel. Very few even of the Eldar knew who hid each of these Rings. Celebrimbor was slain by [[Sauron]] not long after, and Eregion was laid waste.<ref name="SilV"/> But the Three Rings were safe. When King [[Amroth]] son of Amdír perished, Celeborn and Galadriel ruled Lórinand (now known as [[Lothlórien]] or Lórien) jointly, and were called the [[Lord and Lady of Galadhrim]]. Lothlórien blossomed, and Galadriel planted the [[mallorn]] seeds brought with her from Lindon, the only mallorns east of the Sea. They established [[Caras Galadhon]], and the realm of Lothlórien was one of light and life. It was during their days of power and glory in Lothlórien (either before or after the deaths of Amdír and Amroth) that Galadriel bore her first and only child: a daughter exceedingly fair named [[Celebrían]]. She married [[Elrond]], a close friend of Galadriel’s and bearer of [[Vilya]] after the death of Gil-galad during the Alliance. Celeborn and Galadriel had three grandchildren by her, one of whom, [[Arwen]], they were especially close to. But Celebrían was waylaid and tortured by [[Orcs]] in {{TA|2509}}, and passed West over the sea.

In {{TA|2463}} the [[White Council]] was formed. Galadriel, being one of the [[Wise]] and the greatest threat to Sauron alive, was one of the members.<ref name="SilV"/> Celeborn may have been as well, but this is not known for sure. She was a good friend of [[Gandalf]], and recommended that he be made head of the Council. But this distinction fell instead to [[Saruman]], whom she distrusted.

Not long after the departure of the Fellowship she received the resurrected Gandalf. She reclothed and refurnished him, giving him a new staff. After Gandalf left, Lothlórien was subjected to three successive attacks by armies coming out of [[Dol Guldur]]. By the power of her Ring they were thrice repulsed. Celeborn then led [[Fall of Dol Guldur|an attack on Dol Guldur]] itself. Once the dark fortress was in the hands of the Galadhrim, Galadriel came, threw down its walls, and purified it of its evil. It was her last act of power, for the One Ring was destroyed, and the strength of Nenya waned and eventually vanished almost completely.

Galadriel attended the wedding of Aragorn with Arwen, then returned to Lothlórien. But in {{TA|3021}}, two years later, she bade farewell to Celeborn her husband and went West to Valinor. With her went the other two bearers of the Rings, Gandalf and Elrond, and Frodo and Bilbo Baggins who had borne the One Ring. They passed West, and came never again to Middle-earth. There in Valinor Galadriel must have tried to heal Frodo of his spiritual wounds. Whether she was successful or not is unknown. But sometime later during the [[Fourth Age]] she received Celeborn, her husband. And in {{FoA|120}}, it is said, she received Gimli her admirer, who was the first and only dwarf to enter Valinor.

==Characteristics==

Galadriel was very beautiful, her hair being the most notable feature about her. It reminded the Eldar of the light of the [[Two Trees]]. Galadriel, at least in her earlier years, was of a somewhat proud and rebellious nature. She was free-spirited, and during her time in Aman had many dreams of wide unexplored lands. Her favorite brother was Finrod, for he, too, shared this vision. She could explore the minds and hearts of others, and her gaze was seeing. It may be because of her unusual beauty and power that she became proud.

But by the Third Age she is also seen to act with wisdom and gentleness. In ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'', she appears very gentle, firm, and wise. She was revered even more than Celeborn by the Galadhrim and all who met her.

There is a bit of befuddlement and confusion in the story of Galadriel, which [[J.R.R. Tolkien|Tolkien]] revised multiple times. Originally, and in the published ''[[The Silmarillion|Silmarillion]]'', Galadriel followed Fëanor into Exile.<ref name="Sil9"/> Then she met Celeborn in [[Doriath]], for Celeborn was one of the Sindar.<ref>{{S|Return}}</ref> This earlier account explains the difficulty of Celeborn and Galadriel being so closely related (the Eldar did not marry that close). Though it's possible that Galadriel and Celeborn rebelliously defied the customs and laws, it is primarily because of this difficulty that the earlier account has some veracity.

According to the version of ''History of Galadriel and Celeborn'' in [[Unfinished Tales]], she lived with her [[Teleri|Telerin]] relatives in Alqualondë. It was in there that she met ''Teleporno'', a young Telerin prince probably the son or grandson of [[Olwë]] (which would make him Artanis’s uncle or cousin)*. They eventually fell in love, and he called her in his own Telerin tongue [[Alatáriel]] (later [[Sindarization|Sindarinized]] as Galadriel and semi-[[Quenya|Quenyarized]] as [[Altáriel]]). She had another admirer as well: her half-uncle, Fëanor. Fëanor, being a lover of beauty and brilliance, noted her shining hair. He may have been inspired by her tresses to make the Silmarils, both being said to capture the light of the Two Trees. He begged her to spare him some of her hair, but she refused him a single hair three times and he gave up. She had unusually strong powers of mental perception, and when she looked into his mind, she saw only darkness, hinting at Fëanor's evil nature.
During the troubles that followed the Darkening of Valinor, she took no part in the atrocities against the Teleri during the Kinslaying of Alqualondë, but urged Teleporno her beloved to sail across the Sea to Middle-earth by her side. He agreed for her sake, and so they both came under the [[Doom of Mandos]]. Their crossing to Middle-earth by ship was the exception—Fëanor and [[Sons of Fëanor|his sons]] had sailed stolen Telerin ships, while the vast majority of the other Noldor under Fingolfin crossed the [[Helcaraxë]] on foot.

Once in Beleriand they were welcomed by King [[Thingol]] of Doriath, as both were Telerin in origin. Thingol knew nothing of what had happened to his brother Olwë and the [[Calaquendi]], and they brought news. But they said nothing about the Kinslaying. [[Teleporno]] was Sindarinized as ''Celeborn'', and Artanis adopted Teleporno’s pet name for her, Alatáriel, in its Sindarin form: ''Galadriel''.
After the rest of the Noldor arrived in Beleriand and the great [[Dagor-nuin-Giliath]] was fought, Galadriel re-established contact with her brothers, though her hate for the orphaned sons of Fëanor was still strong. She learned much from Melian during her days in Doriath, and occasionally spent time in Nargothrond with her eldest brother Finrod Felagund.

The couple survived the [[War of Wrath|Fall of Beleriand]] and came to [[Lindon]]. Galadriel and her husband stayed there for a while, in the kingdom of Galadriel’s relative [[Gil-galad]]. There for a time they ruled over a fiefdom of [[Sindar]]. Eventually in early [[Second Age]] they went eastwards and established (primarily but by no means solely) the Noldorin realm of [[Eregion]]. [[Celebrimbor]] lived there, and was high in importance among the [[Gwaith-i-Mirdain|smiths]].
Though Galadriel urged Celebrimbor against it, the Noldo collaborated with [[Annatar]] (who was actually Sauron in a fair disguise) on the great process of making Rings of Power. When Sauron's plot revealed, Galadriel counselled Celebrimbor to send the Three Rings far from Eregion. So two of the rings (Narya and Vilya) were sent to Gil-Galad (who eventually gave Narya to Círdan) and Nenya was given to Galadriel. She took the ring across the Misty Mountains through [[Moria|Khazad-dûm]] to safety in a land called [[Lórinand]] in the east.
In time [[Amdír]], King of Lórinand, was slain in the [[Battle of Dagorlad]] during the [[War of the Last Alliance]]. Celeborn may have participated in the war, but the greatest effect it had on the twain (and Lórinand) was the destruction of [[Sauron]] and the loss of [[the One Ring]]. Galadriel was now free to use her ring. With [[Nenya]], the Ring of Water, Galadriel made the realm of Lórinand even greater. With the power of her ring, she protected it from the intrusion of evils throughout the Third Age.

Finduilas lived in Nargothrond with her father and brother under the rule of [[Finrod|Finrod Felagund]]. She was betrothed to [[Gwindor]], who named her '''[[Faelivrin]]''', which meant "Gleam of the Sun on the [[Pools of Ivrin]]".<ref name="CH10">{{CH|10}}</ref>

Her betrothed was captured in {{FA|472}} during the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad|Battle of Unnumbered Tears]] by [[Morgoth]],<ref>{{GA|227}}</ref> but he returned in {{FA|490|n}} with a companion<ref>{{GA|267}}</ref> who called himself ''[[Agarwaen]], son of [[Umarth]]'' ("Bloodstained, son of the Cursed"). Unknown to Finduilas this was actually [[Túrin]] son of [[Húrin]].

Despite her old feelings for Gwindor, who was now mutilated, Finduilas fell in love with noble Túrin who became an influential warrior of Nargothrond. Túrin failed to notice her feelings, she reminding him of [[Lalaith]], the sister he lost in childhood. Gwindor realized that Finduilas had fallen in love with Túrin, and revealed his name to her in an attempt to discourage her pursuit.<ref name="CH10"/>

At the [[Sack of Nargothrond]] by [[Glaurung]], Finduilas was captured. Gwindor was slain after ordering Túrin to protect Finduilas as only she could save him from his fate; however he was entranced by the dragon, and he could not hear Finduilas' cries as she was being dragged past him by the [[Orcs]] as a captive for [[Angband]].<ref>{{CH|11}}</ref>

Due to Glaurung's deceit Túrin abandoned Finduilas and instead went to [[Hithlum]] in search for his kin. When the Orcs were waylaid by the [[Haladin]] of [[Brethil]] at the [[Crossings of Teiglin]] they killed all their captives, pinning Finduilas to a tree with a spear.

By the time Túrin regained his senses, the Haladin buried her in a mound they called ''[[Haudh-en-Elleth]]'' ("Mound of the Elf-maiden").<ref>{{CH|13}}</ref>

With Círdan’s help, young Araphor drove the wraith’s armies from [[Fornost]] and the [[North Downs]].<ref name="Gondor">{{App|Gondor}}</ref> The second time Círdan came to the aid of men was four and a half centuries later, in {{TA|1975}}, when Círdan sent a ship north to [[Forochel]] to rescue the lost [[Arnor]]ian king [[Arvedui]]. With the help of Lúthien, Beren succeeded, but the price was high: [[Carcharoth]] the wolf who was guarding the Gates of [[Angband]], bit off the hand, in which Beren was holding the Silmaril. Driven mad by the pain that the hallowed stone caused to him, searing his intestines, Carcharoth ravaged Beleriand and finally broke through Melian's Girdle, threatening Menegroth. He was confronted somewhat to the north-east from the city at the banks of Esgalduin and killed by [[Huan]] the Great Hound of Valinor, having wounded Beren mortally. The Silmaril was found in his stomach, and thus found its way to Menegroth.<ref name="Beren"/>

===The Sack of Doriath===
Years later, [[Húrin Thalion]] brought as a gift the famed [[Nauglamír]] to Thingol. Thingol then had become enchanted by the beauty of the Silmaril and in his mind made up a plan, to set the Silmaril into the Nauglamír. It happened that at this time a troop of [[Dwarves of Nogrod|Dwarves from Nogrod]] were in Menegroth. Thingol offered a high price to them if they managed to set the stone into the Nauglamír. But seeing the unrivalled jewel and the necklace a great desire and greed came upon them to possess both. When they had finished their work they claimed the treasure, Thingol was slain by them and they fled from Menegroth.<ref name="Ruin">{{S|Doriath}}</ref>

News of the event spread fast and the Dwarves were hunted and slain. Two of them escaped and told a crooked tale about how they were betrayed and their brethren slaughtered by the Elves. The Dwarves of Nogrod rose in anger and mustered a great army. Doriath lay open to their onslaught; the Girdle was gone since Melian in deep sorrow for her husband's death had left Middle-earth.<ref name="Ruin"/>

The Dwarves invaded Doriath and found little resistance, the captains of the Sindar were indecisive and despaired, and attacked Menegroth. Many Dwarves and Elves fought in the [[Battle of the Thousand Caves]] and many were slain. [[Mablung]], captain of the guard, was slain at the doors of the treasure chamber where the Nauglamír was stored. This terrible event then lead to the distrust that thereafter was ever between Elves and Dwarves. On their way back though, the Dwarves were waylaid at [[Sarn Athrad]] by the [[Laiquendi]] led by [[Beren]] and their king was slain by Beren in single combat. The remainder of their host was destroyed by [[Ents]].<ref name="Ruin"/>

===The Second Kinslaying and the End of Menegroth===
The Nauglamír with the Silmaril was thereafter worn by Lúthien at [[Tol Galen]] in [[Ossiriand]]. Although weakened, the Kingdom of Doriath continued for [[Dior|Dior Eluchíl]] son of Lúthien and Beren took up the crown. However, after the death of Lúthien and Beren the Nauglamír was returned to Doriath. The [[Oath of Feanor]] stirred again and [[Sons of Feanor|his sons]] stated their claim on the Silmaril. Dior refused to hand over the stone for which his parents had endured so much. [[Celegorm]] instigated his brothers and in the midst of winter their hosts deployed at the gates of Menegroth and for a second time Elves were slain by Elves.<ref name="Ruin"/>

Dior was slain, and of the seven Sons of Feanor only four were alive after the battle. Dior's sons, [[Eluréd]] and [[Elurín]], were abandoned in the forest to die, but his daugher [[Elwing]] fled to the havens at the [[Mouths of Sirion]], bearing the Silmaril with her. The realm of Menegroth did not endure this second slaughtering and did not rise again.<ref name="Ruin"/>

Menegroth was a wholly undeground city accessed only through a stone bridge over Esgalduin. While the Dwarves did the major work, the Elves also participated in the construction: The pillars imitated beeches, with branches and leaves. The halls were lit by golden lanterns and there were silver fountains, and many figurines of animals. It is told that nightingales and other birds lived within the caves. She was rescued by the [[Sindar]] of [[Mithrim]] who took her to their dwelling in the [[Mountains of Mithrim|mountains]]. Soon after setting out however they were assailed by Orcs and forced to scatter into the night. Tuor, however, refused to flee, and stood his ground, slaying many enemies before being captured.

===Journeys in the Wild===

Tuor was thrall in the House of [[Lorgan]], chief of the Easterlings of Dor-lómin, for three years. He was treated harshly because Lorgan knew of his lineage, but nevertheless endured the torment until he found his opportunity to escape. Upon being sent into the woods on an errand he slew his guards and, escaping pursuit, returned to the caves of Androth. For the next four years he dwelt alone there as an outlaw, slaying many Easterlings and accumulating a large price on his head. He was seeking the Annon-in-Gelydh – the 'Gate of the Noldor' through the [[Ered Lómin]], by which Annael had intended to escape Hithlum unnoticed. After years of searching the [[Valar|Vala]] [[Ulmo]], who already had chosen long ago Tuor as his instrument, sent him a sign that finally led him to the Gate of the Noldor. Upon reaching its entrance Tuor met [[Gelmir (messenger of Círdan)|Gelmir]] and [[Arminas]], messengers of [[Círdan]] who were seeking a way to [[Gondolin]], and they showed him the path through the mountains to [[Nevrast]].

In {{FA|495}} Tuor passed through Nevrast and became the first Man to reach the shores of [[Belegaer]], the Great Sea, and felt for the first time the [[sea-longing]] that would stay with him the rest of his life. He lingered by Belegaer until the autumn, and then after receiving another sign from Ulmo followed seven [[swans]] southward. These led him to the abandoned city of [[Vinyamar]] where long ago Turgon had dwelt and, at the behest of Ulmo, left a sword, armour and a shield bearing the device of a white swan on a blue field. Tuor took these arms and made his way to the shore. Then during a great storm the Lord of Waters finally appeared to Tuor directly, ordering him to seek the city of Gondolin, and giving him a cloak that had a power to hide him from foes. The next morning he met [[Voronwë]] – an elf of Gondolin who had been shipwrecked off the coast of Beleriand and rescued and brought to Vinyamar by Ulmo. After hearing Tuor speak the words of Ulmo Voronwë agreed to guide him to the hidden gate of Gondolin.

Then after enduring a [[Fell Winter (First Age)|bitter winter]] Tuor and Voronwë finally reached the gate of Gondolin. They were taken as prisoners by [[Elemmakil]] and brought before [[Ecthelion|Ecthelion of the Fountain]] who, recognising from his arms that Tuor had been sent by Ulmo, welcomed into the city with honour. Tuor then came before the [[High King of the Noldor|High King]] Turgon and delivered the message of Ulmo: the [[Doom of Mandos]] was nearing its fulfilment and Turgon should abandon his city and retreat to the Havens of Sirion.

Turgon however chose not to heed Ulmo's warning, though it did prompt him to block up the hidden door and make Gondolin's isolation complete. Therefore Tuor remained in Gondolin and like his father before him he learned much from the Elves. He fell in love with [[Idril|Idril Celebrindal]], the daughter of the King, and she with him, and in {{FA|502}} they were married.<ref>{{WJ|P3}}, note 18.</ref> This union, as well as the favour of the King and the memory of his father, endeared Tuor to the people of Gondolin and he was made the leader of the [[House of the Wing]]. Only [[Maeglin]] and his followers harboured a secret hatred and jealousy of him.

Soon after their union a [[Half-elven]] was born to Tuor and Idril, who was named [[Eärendil]] or 'Sea-friend', reflecting the 'sea-longing' Tuor passed to his son<ref name="Letter297">{{L|297}}</ref>. But in {{FA|510}} Gondolin's secrecy finally failed. First Húrin, Tuor's uncle, released from Morgoth's long torment and attempting to enter the city, revealed its location in the [[Encircling Mountains]]. Still Morgoth would not have found an entrance to the city were it not for the treachery of Maeglin, who having defied the King's order and ventured outside the encircling mountains was captured by Orcs and brought to Angband – there he betrayed Turgon in return for the promise of the lordship of Gondolin and the possession of Idril.

During the subsequent [[Fall of Gondolin|siege]] Tuor fought valiantly. He rescued Idril from Maeglin, throwing the Dark Elf from the walls of the city to his death. But in the end Gondolin fell and Turgon was killed. Tuor and Idril led the survivors of the sack in a desperate escape through the [[Idril's secret way|secret way]] Idril had prepared and over the mountains. Protected by Ulmo they journeyed down the vale of [[Sirion]] to the Havens at its mouth – the last refuge of the Elves of Beleriand. On the way the remnant of Gondolin stopped in [[Nan-tathren]] to make a feast in memory of the fallen, and here Tuor composed ''[[The Horns of Ylmir]]'' for his son Eärendil.

Tuor and Idril dwelt for a while at the Mouths of Sirion. But eventually the sea-longing that had been instilled in him when he first came to the shores of Belegaer grew too strong. In {{FA|525}} he built a ship, [[Eärrámë]] ([[Quenya|Q]]: 'Sea-wing'), and sailed to the [[Aman|West]] with Idril, and possibly Voronwë also.<ref name="WJ-TYears">{{WJ|Years}}</ref> It was a tradition under the [[Eldar]] and [[Edain]] that they arrived in [[Valinor]], and that Tuor alone of Men was counted among the Eldar, immortal as other Elves.<ref group="note">Apparently by the special will of [[Ilúvatar]] himself; see [[Letter 153]].</ref>

However Huor's prophecy on the field of Nírnaeth Arnoediad proved true. In the same year that Tuor and Idril departed Eärendil married [[Elwing]] in the [[Unions of Elves and Men|third union of Elves and Men]]. At first seeking after his father, he sailed to Valinor and roused the Valar to the [[War of Wrath]], and so became the prophesied saviour of the Elves and Men of Middle-earth. The only 'complete' source on Tuor therefore remains the very early ''[[The Fall of Gondolin]]'', written while Tolkien was on sick-leave from the army in [[1917]] and later incorporated into ''[[The Book of Lost Tales]]''. In this version nothing is said about Tuor's early life and lineage, though later he introduces himself to the [[Gondolindrim|Gondothlim]] as "Tuor son of [[Peleg]] son of [[Indor]] of the [[house of the Swan]] of the sons of the Men of the North". He is described as a hermit ("Tuor of the lonely heart") living in the woods of Mithrim who simply happened upon the Gate of the Noldor and so came to live in a cave by the sea. Ulmo—employing swans, which Tuor as in later versions took as his emblem—then guided Tuor from the shores of the sea to a group of Noldor, who took him through the fenland region of [[Arlisgion]] and hence to the [[Nan-tathren|Land of Willows]]. Here Tuor would have stayed, but Ulmo appeared to him directly and ordered him to seek Gondolin. In this version he did not receive his arms from Turgon until he reached Gondolin.

He is also named as the leader of one of twelve Houses of Gondolin, the [[House of the Wing]], whose emblem was the wing of a swan or gull. Tuor's deeds in the [[Fall of Gondolin|battle for the city]] are also given. After rescuing Idril and [[Eärendil|Eärendel]] from the treacherous [[Maeglin|Meglin]], and leaving Voronwë to guard them, he and his company made their way to the battle at the gate. Here they fought alongside [[Ecthelion|Ecthelion of the Fountain]] as [[dragons]] pulled down the walls of the city and enemies poured in. Tuor is said to have slain three [[orcs|orc-lords]]: [[Othrod]], [[Balcmeg]] and [[Lug]]; as well as five [[balrogs]]. Eventually however he was forced to retreat bearing the injured Ecthelion. After being rescued by [[Galdor of the Tree|Galdor]] in the [[Square of the Folkwell]], he rallied what remained of the defenders of the city and made for the [[Square of the Palace of Turgon|King's Square]]. During its defence Tuor was set upon by [[Gothmog (balrog)|Gothmog, lord of Balrogs]] and would have perished, but Ecthelion came to his aid and slew the Balrog, going to his own death in the attempt. At this point Turgon conceded the city was lost, as [[Doom of Mandos|Mandos had foretold]], and though he himself resolved to stay in the city ordered Tuor to lead the survivors through Idril's secret way. When they emerged onto the plain of [[Tumladen|Tumladin]] a [[Ulmo|miraculous]] mist, and Tuor rescued Eärendel, who had fled the city earlier with a servant called [[Hendor]], from a pack of wolf-riders. Tuor and the refugees were then attacked once more as they fled over the encircling mountains, by a balrog, but [[Thorondor]] and his [[eagles]] came to their aid. [[Glorfindel]] slew the balrog but was himself killed when its body fell on him.

The ''Fall of Gondolin'' ends with Tuor, Idril and Eärendel living at the Mouths of Sirion, however in Tolkien's notes for what was to be the next chapter of ''The Book of Lost Tales'' he mentions that Tuor disappeared while at sea.<ref name="LT2Earendel">{{HM|LT2}}, "[[The Tale of Eärendel]]".</ref>

In the different manuscripts of ''The Fall of Gondolin'' Tolkien alternated between Tuor and '''Tûr''', but eventually settled on Tuor in the 1930s ''Silmarillion''.

Mîm was captured, and arrows were shot at his sons '''[[Ibun]]''' and '''[[Khîm]]'''.

In exchange for his life, Mîm was forced to lead the outlaws to his secret halls in Amon Rûdh. There, it turned out Khîm had been killed by an arrow, and Túrin repenting offered his service to Mîm. For this reason Mîm tolerated the outlaws, and eventually even took a liking to Túrin.

When [[Beleg|Beleg Cúthalion]] arrived at Amon Rûdh, Mîm was angry: he hated [[Elves]], especially the [[Sindar]].
