I often see the 2 film series, The Hobbit and LOTR (and sometimes The LOTR books) referred to as Trilogies, my understanding and the term Trilogy in storytelling is of 3. Distinct stories each with a beginning, middle and ending, linked by characters, place, plot, theme or other device, whereas both The Hobbit (the film) and LOTR are one continuous story split into 3 parts, and therefore not Trilogies.
This is just me musing and maybe being pedantic.
