}}Valandil was the son of Elatan of Andúnië and Silmariën, the eldest daughter of Tar-Elendil, the fourth King of Númenor.

However, when it came time for Tar-Elendil to relinquish the Sceptre of Númenor it did not pass on to Silmariën or her sister Isilmë; instead it went to Tar-Elendil's third child Meneldur.

As Silmarien or Valandil could not become Kings of Númenor, Tar-Elendil instead made Valandil the first of the Lords of Andúnië, who ruled the city in Andustar in western Númenor and were held in the highest honor after the Kings. As a ruler of one of the divisions of Númenor Valandil was also a member of the Council of the Sceptre, a position that was inherited by his descendants.

Valandil was a close cousin of Aldarion and twice hosted feasts for him in Andúnië, on the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Guild of Venturers and again in midsummer of 870 when the newly wedded Aldarion and Erendis visited.

In time, one of the descendants of Valandil was Elendil, the first High King of the Dúnedain in Middle-earth. Elendil's son was Isildur and from his line, many generations later, came Aragorn.
Etymology
Valandil means "Devoted to the Valar" in Quenya (from Vala and the suffix -ndil, 'friend of', 'devoted to').
Seeing the strength of the Noldor in battle, Melkor realized that orcs alone were not sufficient to defeat his enemies. He therefore began to breed a new race of monsters: the dragons.

The Father of Dragons was Glaurung, a mighty worm with a fearful intelligence and a powerful hypnotic gaze. Glaurung played an integral part in the fate of the Children of Húrin. Among his many crimes were the destruction of the Elf-realm of Nargothrond and a spell cast upon Nienor which stripped her of her memory. This eventually led her to a disastrous reunion and marriage to her long-lost brother Túrin. When Nienor learned the truth of Glaurung's plot, she flung herself to her death. Glaurung was finally slain by Túrin, who afterward committed suicide in reaction to Glaurung's plot.

At the Fall of Gondolin, Morgoth's foul host included dragons, "many and terrible" including the fearful Beast of Gondolin.

During the War of Wrath, Morgoth unleashed a new terror upon Middle-earth -- the winged dragons. Chief among these was Ancalagon the Black. Eventually slain by Eärendil the Mariner, Ancalagon's fall crushed the towers of Thangorodrim. Many of the dragons were destroyed in the War of Wrath but some fled and survived into the later Ages.

Dragons after the First Age
It would appear that the dragons fled to the Northern Waste, far from the lands of Men and Elves. Over the centuries, the race of dragons continued to breed and repopulate, particularly in the Withered Heath, an area in between two spurs of the Grey Mountains.

In the late Third Age the dragons of the Withered Heath, stirred by the return of Evil, began to harass the Northmen and make war with the Dwarves around the year 2570 (Dáin I and Frór of Durin's Folk were killed by a great cold-drake in 2589). It was perhaps in these wars that dragons swallowed four of the Seven Dwarf-rings.

The most fearsome dragon of the Third Age was Smaug, who laid waste to the Dwarf-realm of Erebor and the nearby town of Dale. This devastated the area and sent Durin's Folk into exile. Smaug remained in the abandoned halls of the Lonely Mountain for many years until the coming of Thorin and Company and their "burglar", the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins. This began a chain of events that led to Smaug's death at the hands of Bard the Bowman.

Although Smaug was the greatest of the dragons of his day, he seems not to have been the last of his kind as Gandalf told Frodo that "there is not now any dragon left on earth in which the old fire is hot enough [to melt the Rings of Power]", indicating the presence of other, lesser dragons.

Characteristics
The dragons were huge and longeval, with their lives spanning centuries. They shared a greed of treasure (especially gold), subtle intelligence, immense cunning, great physical strength, and their eyes and words had a hypnotic power called "dragon-spell". Those who did not wish to be compromised by a dragon's speech did never give directly information, but talked vaguely and in riddles, since denying an answer, would anger it to violence.

Apparently, dragons came from eggs.

It may be that dragons could sport horns.

While dragons were armoured with iron scales, they had a soft spot underneath, in the region of the chest, which could be pierced by blades or darts.
Means of locomotion
Some dragons (Glaurung) walked on four legs, like a Komodo dragon or some other lizard. These must have been the most common type of dragons in the First Age, since the Winged-dragons only first appeared during the War of Wrath. These (such as Ancalagon and Smaug) could both walk on four legs and fly using wings. Breeds of wingless dragons did survive into later Ages.

Fire breathing
The Urulóki (singular Urulok&euml;, Fire-drakes) could breathe fire. It is not entirely clear whether the term "Uruloki" referred only to the first dragons such as Glaurung that could breathe fire but were wingless, or to any dragon that could breathe fire, and thus include Smaug.

Dragon-fire (of the Urulóki) was hot enough to melt Rings of Power: four of the Seven Rings of the Dwarves were consumed by Dragon-fire, although it was not powerful enough to destroy the One Ring itself.

The dragons who could not breathe fire were known as Cold-drakes. Those were found mainly in Ered Mithrin.

* Glaurung &mdash; Father of Dragons, slain by Túrin Turambar. First of the Uruloki, the Fire-drakes of Angband. He had four legs and could breathe fire, but didn't have wings.
* Ancalagon the Black &mdash; first and mightiest of the Winged-dragons, slain by Eärendil in the War of Wrath.
* Scatha &mdash; Slain by Fram of the Éothéod. Apparently a cold-drake. Described as a "long-worm", although this imprecise term seems to be more of an expression rather than a separate taxonomic group.
* Smaug &mdash; the last great dragon of Middle-earth, slain by Bard of Esgaroth. A winged Urulokë.
* An unnamed dragon appears in Hobbit verse, said to have had red eyes, black wings and teeth like knives.
* Beast of Gondolin &mdash; A Fire-Drake at the Fall of Gondolin.

Etymology and names
Dragon is derived from French; drake is an English word, from Old English draca (derived from Latin).

The dragons were known by many different names: drakes, worms, long-worms, serpents.

Words denoting "dragon" in Quenya are lókë and angulóke. Sindarin has lhûg and amlug.

In Gnomish, "dragon" is fuithlug ("a dragon who guards treasure"), lingwir or ulug (plural ulûgin; "she dragon" is uluch, uluchnir or ulugwin).

Other versions of the Legendarium
In The Book of Lost Tales Part Two a legend among Men exists concerning dragons. Whoever tastes the heart of a dragon and can withstand its poisonous blood "would know all tongues of Gods or Men, of birds or beasts, and his ears would catch whispers of the Valar or of Melko".

Other fiction
A dragon named Chrysophylax appears in J.R.R. Tolkien's story Farmer Giles of Ham.

In the story Roverandom, white dragons are among the creatures living on the moon. A dragon, called the Great White Dragon, attacks Rover and the moon-dog, and is said to be the origin of all white dragons. In Merlin's time, this dragon had been to the earth, and fought with the Red Dragon in Caerdragon. The Great White Dragon has wings and can breath fire.
Hildórien (Q: "Land of the Followers", pron. N [hilˈdoːri.en]) was the land in the far east of Middle-earth in which the first Men or Hildor, awoke at the beginning of the First Age.

It was said among the Elves, that Morgoth went there and put a darkness in the hearts of the Men. Some Men, who were at war with those who fell under the Shadow, fled Hildórien seeking the Light of the West.
Etymology
The Silmarillion appendix confirms that Hildórien is of the same root as the word Hildor. It can be therefore understood as Quenya Hildor + -ien, therefore "Land of the Followers".
Other versions of the Legendarium
In The Book of Lost Tales, Men awoke in a hidden valley called Murmenalda, the Vale of Sleep or Slumbrous Dale. It was enclosed by a wall of encircling mountains, east of Palisor, described as "hallowed" and full of sweet fragrances and odours, and songs of nightingales, its beauty being comparable to Valinor. It was full of sleeping figures.
Nuin was one of the Hisildi, the Dark Elves who were ruled by the mysterious fay known as Tu or Tuvon in the early writings of The Book of the Lost Tales.

History
Nuin is said to be very wise and loved to travel with his folk. Once he wandered far to the east of Palisor until curiosity led him to a strange place, with a mountainous wall. He found a passage which led to a valley inside a mountainous circle, Murmenalda, the Vale of Sleep. There he saw sleeping forms, others alone, other entangled into the arms of others. Frightened, he went back to Tu and told his tale, and Tu replied him that they were the Younger Children of Iluvatar.

The story, known as "Gilfanon's Tale", stops and its development is known only from outlines. According to them, Tu warned Nuin that it was not yet the time of Men to wake yet as they needed light, but Nuin visited the valley often and pondered on the figures. Accidentaly he stumbled against a sleeper who stirred, and then he was overcome with curiosity and awoke the first pair of Men, Ermon and Elmir, right before the first rising of the Sun from the West. Men were dumb and frightened, but Nuin taught them speech, some Ilkorin tongue, and thus was the Father of Speech. In another note, Nuin fights alongside Ermon in a fight against Fangli but he is killed by Goblins, a result of the betraying of Men.

Christopher Tolkien laments that "Gilfanon's Tale" remained unfinished and wondered whether his father consciously rejected the concepts of the story outright, or left it un hiatus, until his ideas were replaced by those of the later Silmarillion (Of Men).
Sundocarmë is the concept of an etymological root of the languages. All Elvish and Mannish words (and in a sense, also Khuzdul) derive from a base root.

Sundocarmi are not actual words, but bases that contain the general meanings, and from which, during the process of evolution and times, real words were derived through affixes, suffixes, or modifications.

In the very first phase of the Primitive Quendian, sundocarmi were probably used as actual words; in that period the Elves could speak only through uninflected words, without any differentiation between parts of the speech (Tradition says that the very first word ever said by an Elf was el-e!, a primitive exclamation "look!", referring to a star).

The consonants of the root was called sundo and the central radical vowel called sundóma.

Categories
Sundocarmi usually have the construction combinations:

*VC or CV (examples: KWE "speak"; this category is called monoconsonantic)
*(C)VCV (examples: DELE- "walk", ABA- "deny"; this category was preferred for meanings related to actions/verbs)
*CVC(V) (examples: TATA- "two", TUR- "power, control")
The Petty-dwarves were a diminutive race of Dwarves.
History
The Petty-dwarves were Dwarves of [presumably] several houses, which had been exiled from eastern Dwarf cities for unclear reasons. They were the first to cross the Ered Luin in the First Age, and established strongholds in Beleriand before the Elves arrived, at Nulukkizdîn and Sharbhund (also known as Bar-en-Nibin-noeg, the "House of the Petty Dwarves"). In Beleriand they diminished in physical stature and in smith-craft.

The Sindar, not acquainted with Dwarves yet, thought the Petty-dwarves were animals, and hunted them. Not until the Dwarves of Belegost and Nogrod established contact with the Sindar did they realize what the "animals" were and named them Noegyth Nibin; Petty-dwarves.

Afterwards they were mostly left alone, but the Petty-dwarves already came to hate all Elves with a passion and by the time of the War of the Jewels, after the return of the Noldor, the Petty-dwarves had nearly died out. The last remnant of their people were Mîm and his two sons Ibun and Khîm, who lived at Amon Rûdh.

Petty-dwarves differed from normal Dwarves in various ways: they were smaller, far more unsociable, and they freely gave away their names: other Dwarves kept their Khuzdul names and language a secret. This may have been one of the reasons they were exiled.

Names
A name among the Eldar for the Petty-dwarves was Levain tad-dail, or simply Tad-dail. Another name, used among the Sindar, was Noegyth Nibin or Nibin-Noeg or Nibin-Nogrim.
Narya (pron. [ˈnarʲa]), the Ring of Fire or Red Ring, was one of the Rings of Power, specifically one of the "Three Rings for the Elven Kings under the sky".

History
Created by Celebrimbor after Annatar had left Eregion, it was free of Annatar's (Sauron's) influence due to the fact that the Elves hid their three rings from him upon discerning his intent, but it was still bound to the One Ring. According to Unfinished Tales, at the start of the War of the Elves and Sauron Celebrimbor gave Narya together with the Ring Vilya to Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor. Gil-galad entrusted Narya to his lieutenant Círdan, Lord of the Havens of Mithlond, who kept it after Gil-galad's death. In The Lord of the Rings, Gil-galad receives only Vilya, while Círdan receives Narya from the very beginning. In the Third Age Círdan gave the ring to Gandalf for his labours. It is described as having the power to inspire others to resist tyranny, as well as (in common with the other Three Rings) hiding the wielder from remote observation (except by the wielder of the One) and giving resistance to the weariness of time:

Etymology
The name Narya is Quenya, deriving from the elements narwa "fiery red" + -ya (adjective suffix).
}}Mahtan (Q, pron. [ˈmaxtan]) was a Noldorin Elf and the father of Nerdanel, the wife of Fëanor.

A skilled smith in Valinor, Mahtan learned the arts of metal and stone work under the Vala Aulë, and for this Mahtan was also called Aulendur ("Servant of Aulë"). He wore a copper circlet around his head and was known for his fondness for the metal. Thus he was called Urundil - 'copper-lover'. Mahtan in turn taught Fëanor, the greatest of all Elven craftsmen, who—to Mahtan's regret—used this knowledge to forge the first weapons and armour in Valinor.

Mahtan had a beard, which was unusual for an Elf, especially one as young as he. Elves could only grow beards from the third cycle of their lives, while Mahtan was an exception in being only early in his second.

Etymology
The name Mahtan seems to come from the Quenya mahta- ("to handle"), a reference to the arts and skills of making. His devotion to Aulë had earned him the name Aulëndur ("Servant of Aulë") from -ndur ("to serve"). The earlier form of this name was Aulëndil, which was later used by Sauron during his treachery to Númenor. His other name Urundil means "Copper-lover" from urun ("copper") and -ndil ("lover, friend"). His other epessë Rusco means "Fox", a reference to his red-brown hair.
