Hi Sandy, I'm not sure if I've missed a discussion about this but I was wondering why you removed <nowiki>{{noncanon}}</nowiki> and/or <nowiki>[[Category:Noncanon elves]]</nowiki> from some articles? --{{User:Mith/sig}} 12:33, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

:Hey Mith. A month ago I was creating some new articles about the earlier stages of the legendarium, and I included them in non canon categories. However, Morgan told me that you now consider everything written by Tolkien canon. It is in his discussion page as well, you can check it. So, I asked if I could clean some if I spotted them and he said ok. Also, in the manual of style you say the same thing under canon, everything written by Tolkien is canon and everything in the adaptations is non canonical. --[[User:Sandy|Sandy]] 14:12, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

[[File:Kimberly - Thuringwethil.jpg|thumb|480px|''Thuringwethil'' by Kimberly]]
'''Thuringwethil''' (perished circa {{FA|465}}) was a [[Vampire]] servant of [[Sauron]] during the First Age. She was Sauron's messenger, but was caught in the battle between her master, [[Lúthien]] and [[Huan]] at [[Tol-in-Gaurhoth]] ("Isle of Werewolves"). She was slain either by the [[Hound of Valinor]] or in the collapse of [[Minas Tirith in Beleriand|Minas Tirith]]. Lúthien later used her cloak to sneak into [[Angband]] during the [[Quest for the Silmaril]].<ref>{{S|19}}</ref>

Because of Thuringwethil's ability to change forms, she may have been a [[Maiar|Maia]].

== Etymology ==
The name is glossed as "Woman of Secret Shadow"<ref>{{S|Index}}</ref> and an early version of the [[legendarium]] the name is said to mean "she of hidden shadow".<ref>{{LB|C13}}, Note to line 3954, p. 304</ref>

The above can be analyzed as ''[[thurin]]'' "secret, hidden", ''[[gwath]]'' "shadow" and an obscure ending ''[[-il]]'' which perhaps denotes feminine gender.

Note that ''-il'' causes "[[i-affection|umlauting]]" (or "[[wikipedia:Affection (linguistics)|affection]]") of ''gwath'' to ''gweth''.
Tolkien|Tolkien]]'s earlier work ''[[The Fall of Gondolin]]'', the '''Scarlet Heart''' was the heart of [[Finwë]], then [[Turgon|Turgon's]] father, cut out by [[orcs]] in the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad|Battle of Unnumbered Tears]].<ref>{{LT1|X}}, p. 241</ref> It was regained by Turgon, and made the emblem of his [[House of the King|House]].<ref>{{LT2|III}}, Note 27, p. 200</ref>

If this story survived to be Tolkien's "[[final intent]]", then the heart would probably be that of Fingon, Turgon's brother. Finwë was slain by [[Morgoth]] himself in Aman, Fingolfin's body was taken away by Gwaihir before Morgoth could desecrate it, and Fëanor's body turned to ashes after death. But altogether it is doubtful that Tolkien ever kept this story, but changed or abandoned it with much of the other material found in the ''Fall''.
Later during the battle he stirred his kindred against the Balrogs with words of passion, and though many were slain, they slew a number of the fiery creatures "that... was a marvel and dread to the hosts of [[Melko]], for ere that day never had any Balrogs been slain by the hand of Elves or Men". '''Inglor Felagund''' was an older, rejected name for [[Finrod|Finrod Felagund]]. It makes a relic appearance in ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'', in the form of "[[Gildor|Gildor '''Inglor'''ion]]".

==Finrod==
In earlier versions of the [[legendarium]], until the era of the first edition of ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'', the name "Finrod" was given to the character later known as [[Finarfin]]. [[Finrod|Finrod Felagund]] was at the time known as Inglor Felagund.

The name however was survived in the patronym ''Inglorion'' and perhaps in the Quenya form ''[[Ingalaurë]]''. Because of that, some people speculate that [[Gildor|Gildor Inglorion]] was Finrod's son, but there is much evidence to the contrary.

==Etymology==
Inglor in the early appearances was interpreted as "heart-gold" ([[Sundocarmë|Root]]s [[IND]] and G-[[LOR]]).

Although the name Inglor(ion) is not analyzed in the later works, there is a similarity to Finarfin's [[Amilessë|mother-name]], ''Ingalaurë''<ref>{{PM|Shibboleth}}</ref>. Therefore according to the more recent background, Inglor could be the [[sindarization|Sindarin interpretation]] of that name, having a new etymology and meaning ("Vanya-gold").
The '''Thrall-Noldoli''' were those [[Elves]] of the [[Noldor]] who have become slaves of [[Morgoth]].

==History==
In the earlier conceptions of what would become ''[[The Silmarillion]]'', all Elven realms of [[Beleriand]] were destroyed much earlier than in the final work, and virtually all the Noldoli were enslaved by Melko as his thralls, working in the mines of [[Angband]] doing his work. The only free Noldoli were escaped thralls, who were mistrusted by the [[Sindar]].

Melko's power in these early works is perceived as great: he is able to dominate the minds of the Elves wherever they go, by instilling his fear in them. Even the escaped thralls are thus not truly free. It is not inconceivable that in this early conception Thrall-Noldoli were used to breed the [[Orcs]].

In the later material the published ''Silmarillion'' was based on, there are relatively few references to Morgoth's thralls. There are no clear mentions what happens to the Elves Morgoth captures (exactly where [[Finduilas]] and the other women of [[Nargothrond]] were taken to is never said), but the idea is still present in the end of the ''[[Quenta Silmarillion]]'', which mentions that the [[Valar]] freed Morgoth's slaves.

Sandy:

'''Telimektar''', son of [[Tulkas]], is one of the so called "Lost Valar", a character that appeared only in the early versions of the [[legendarium]]. Later on, he only survived as a constellation, but eventually lost his original name which, however, reappeared as a name of [[Telumehtar Umbardacil]], 28th [[Kings of Gondor|King of Gondor]].
==Evolution==
Telimektar is first mentioned in an early story, ''The Chaining of Melko''. Telimektar was "but just war-high" when he fought at his father's side against [[Melko]] in the war which ended with the captivity of the Enemy. Telimektar had "a long sword girt about his waist by a silver girdle."<ref>{{LT1|IV}}</ref>

Later on, in the tale ''The Theft of Melko'', in the darkness after the darkening of the [[Trees]] Telimektar is pursuing [[Melko]] with other [[Gods]] (as they were then called) and "his face and weapons gleam as silver in the dark".<ref>{{LT1|VI}} (p. 154)</ref>

In ''The Tale of the Sun and Moon'' Telimektar is already conversed into a constellation, casually mentioned in a representation of the Heavens by [[Manwë]], who tells that the star [[Nielluin]] (Sirius, called [[Helluin]] in ''[[The Silmarillion]]'') is "nigh the foot of Telimektar son of Tulkas whose tale is yet to tell."<ref>{{LT1|VIII}} (p. 182; cf. p. 200)</ref>

Alas, the tale was never properly told. Telimektar's last appearance in Tolkien's mythology is in ''The History of Eriol or Ælfwine and the End of the Tales'',<ref>{{LT2|VI}} (pp. 278-334)</ref> or more properly, in the sketches for this story collected (and edited) by [[Christopher Tolkien]] from his father's notebooks.

In the conclusion of the whole story that was to become ''[[Quenta Silmarillion]]'', later totally rejected, Melko breaks away after the breaking of [[Angamandi]] (later: [[Angband]]) and goes to [[Tol Eressëa]] in order to create dissension among the Elves. The Gods do not interfere, but Tulkas decides to privily send Telimektar to aid the Elves.

Telimaktar, with his silver sword, and [[Ingil]] (son of [[Ingwë#Other versions of the legendarium|Inwë]], king of the Eldar in [[Kôr]] or [[Valinor]]) surprise and wound Melko and then pursue him until Melko climbs to the great [[Pine of Tavrobel]]. There he must stay and Telimektar and Ingil (or [[Gil]], now the star Sirius) remain in the sky in guard against Melko's return.<ref name=LTII6>{{LT2|VI}} (p. 281)</ref>

The last statement about Telimektar concerns with Telimektar's shape in the Heavens: the constellation should only be "the image of Telimektar in the sky?" and the stars are given to him by [[Varda]] so that the Gods would know that he still is watching Melko. Also "he has diamonds on his sword-sheath, and this will go red when he draws his sword at the Great End".<ref name=LTII6/>

Then the end of the story was entirely changed and the character of Telimektar was also dropped. But as an echo of Telimektar, in the two following versions of the Silmarillion, the army of the [[Valar]] marches to the [[War of Wrath]],<ref>{{SM|2}} (pp. 11-75)</ref> commanded by [[Fionwë]], son of [[Tulcas]].<ref>{{SM|2}} (p. 37)</ref><ref>{{SM|Q17}} (p. 149)</ref> Later on, Fionwë was called son of Manwë, and finally he was transformed to [[Eönwë]], Manwë's herald (as in ''The Silmarillion''<ref>{{S|24}}</ref>). Of Telimektar remained only the mention of [[Telumehtar]] as a name of Orion in the [[The Lord of the Rings Appendices|Appendices to ''The Lord of the Rings'']].<ref>{{App|E1i}} (entry concerning the pronounciation of H in the Elvish languages)</ref>

==Other name-forms and etymology==

Telimektar also appears as an entry in the ''[[Qenya Lexicon]]'', an early representation of the Elvish language. The entry is titled ''Telimektar'', ''Telimbektar'' and the [[Gnomish]] form is told to be ''Telumaithar''. In the Valar name-list Telimektar is also called ''Taimondo'' or ''Taimordo'', in Gnomish ''Daimord''.<ref>{{LT1|Appendix}} (p. 268)</ref>

The first element ''Teli''- refers to the sky. Cf. ''telluma'' 'dome (of Varda)',<ref>{{WJ|AD1}} (p. 399)</ref> ''telimbo'' 'sky', from the root TELE- 'cover in',<ref name=P268>{{LT1|Appendix}} (p. 268)</ref> see also: TEL-, TELU-.<ref name=Ety>{{LR|P3}}</ref> The second element –'mektar' "probably derives from the root MAKA".<ref>{{LT1|Appendix}} (pp. 258, 268)</ref><ref name=Ety/> The end of the name is thus related to the name of another "lost vala", [[Makar]] 'warrior' and is also seen in the other name of the constellation Orion, [[Menelmacar]].

The other name of Telimektar, Taimondo/Taimordo, is derived from the word ''taimë, taimië'' 'sky', but the end does not refer to warrior, being a loan from [[Gnomish]] word ''mord'' which means 'shepherd'. Thus the name of the constellation was also conceived as 'Shepherd of the Sky' ([[Taimavar]] in Qenya).<ref name=P268/>

For the sake of completeness note also the spelling ''Telumaith'' (see below), and ''Taimonto''.<ref>{{LT2|VI}} (pp. 281, 302)</ref>

==On Telimektar and his son Lúthien==

In a comment to ''The History of Eriol or Ælfwine and the End of the Tales'',<ref>{{LT2|VI}} (p. 302)</ref> Christopher Tolkien treats the origin of the name of [[Lúthien]], which originally was the name given to the mariner [[Ælfwine|Ælfwine of England]] by the elves. C. Tolkien refers to a note coeval to the sketches of the story of [[Eriol]] and Ælfwine. In that note "Lúthien or [[Lúsion]] was son of Telumaith (Telumektar)". Ælfwine got his name because he "loved the sign of Orion, and made the sign". The name Lúthien is here explained to mean 'wanderer'. This storyline is not further developed or even mentioned neither does this interpretation of the name Lúthien appear elsewhere.
'''Anairë''' ([[Quenya|Q]], pron. {{IPA|[aˈna͡ɪre]}}) was the wife of [[Fingolfin]]. Little is known about her (even whether or not she was [[Noldor]]in), except that she did not leave [[Aman]] and was friends with [[Eärwen]], [[Finarfin]]'s wife. They had four children, namely [[Fingon]], [[Turgon]], [[Aredhel]], and [[Argon]].<ref>{{PM|Shibboleth}}</ref> She presumably still resides in [[Aman]].
Anairë does not appear in ''[[The Silmarillion]]'' and [[Fingolfin]] is given three children but no wife in the genealogy. She is only mentioned in ''[[The History of Middle-earth]]''.
The '''Uttermost East''' refers to the notion of a land in the extreme [[East]] of [[Arda]] (beyond [[Rhûn]]), described in the early versions of the [[Legendarium]].
==''Oronto''==
In ''[[The Book of Lost Tales Part One]]'', the easternmost land of Arda was called '''''[[Oronto]]''''' ("East"). This region was connected to the [[Great Lands]], laying directly east of [[Palisor]], with no separating water. The huge peak [[Kalormë]] stood in Oronto.<ref name=LT1>{{LT1|IX}}</ref>

[[Oromë]] described the East to the [[Valar]], saying that "''there is a silent beach and dark empty seas''". It is also told that [[Aulë ]]and [[Ulmo]] "''builded great havens'' [of the Sun and Moon] ''beside the soundless sea''".<ref name=LT1/><ref>{{SM|5e}}</ref>
The land was separated from [[Endor]] by the waters of the [[East Sea]].

In the Land of the Sun was a great, curve-shaped mountain range called the [[Wall of the Sun]], which corresponded symmetrically to the [[Pelóri Mountains]] of Aman.<ref name=5b/>
The '''Dark Land''', also referred to as the '''South Land''', was a mysterious continent far south-east of the landmass of which [[Middle-earth]] was part. It laid east of the [[East Sea]].<ref name=AmbarV>{{HM|SM}}, "The Ambarkanta: Map V", pp. 250-1</ref>
==History==
No inhabitants or history of the Dark Land were ever officially recorded.

==Canonicity and Inspiration==
The Dark Land has no role in the [[legendarium]] and appears only in an early map by [[J.R.R. Tolkien|Tolkien]],<ref name=AmbarV/> likely dating from the mid-1930s.<ref>{{HM|LR}}, pp. 9, 108</ref><ref>{{CG|RG}}, p. 42</ref>

[[Tolkien fandom|Fans]] have suggested and discussed different theories of inspiration behind this notion:
*the Dark Land as reminiscent of [[Wikipedia:Lemuria (continent)|Lemuria]].<ref>[http://groups.yahoo.com/group/elfling/message/35418 Message 35418] (dated 8 May 2009) at [[Elfling]] (accessed 20 October 2011)</ref>
*the Dark Land as perhaps representing a combination of both Australia and Antarctica (because of its geographic position).<ref>"[http://www.lotrplaza.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=212156 Dark Land...a continent south of Middle Earth?]" at [http://www.lotrplaza.com/forum/default.asp The Lord of the Rings Fanatics Plaza Forum] (accessed 20 October 2011)</ref>

==Portrayal in adaptations==
'''1982-97: ''[[Middle-earth Role Playing]]'':'''
:Although never fleshed out in much detail, a "dark continent" called Mórenorë is said to be situated south of Middle-earth, separated by the sea of Haragaer.<ref>{{ICE|2003}}, pp. 7, 9</ref> A few glimpses of this remote continent, however, were provided:
*A black cold-drake, Naikamil, fled from mountains in the south of Endor to Mórenorë after killing her mate.<ref>{{ICE|2012}}, p. 102</ref>
*[[Ungoliant]], a monster of the Elder Days, is said to have "settled in the shadowy reaches of Morenórë, the Dark Continent",<ref group=note>Inspired by a passage in ''[[The Silmarillion]]'', which says that Ungoliant went "into the forgotten south of the world", after having dwelt at [[Nan Dungortheb]] (cf. "[[Of the Flight of the Noldor]]").</ref> according to tales of the Avari Elves.<ref>{{ICE|2006}}, p. 117</ref>
*Ninko Goldmaster, a mysterious merchant appearing as a character in an adventure setting, is rumoured to have visited distant lands, including Mórenorë.<ref>{{ICE|3112}}, p. 117</ref>
'''''The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: Chronicles: Art & Design''''' is a book which details the work of [[Weta Workshop]] for ''[[The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey]]''.

== From the Publisher==

''The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Chronicles: Art and Design'' marks the beginning of a series of comprehensive and beautifully presented books created by the artists at the heart of the film-making process. It accompanies the intensely anticipated movies from New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM: ''The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'', ''The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'' and ''The Hobbit: There and Back Again''.
The first chronicle in the series, Art and Design presents hundreds of full colour conceptual drawings and paintings, along with set designs, sculpture and glorious photography across more than 200 pages.
The book showcases art by the film’s concept art directors, Academy Award® Winner Alan Lee and John Howe alongside work from other artists of the film’s 3 foot 7 Art Department, Costume Department and Weta Workshop.
It truly is a unique opportunity to see artwork by a wide range of artists across a multitude of disciplines in the film-making community of Wellington, New Zealand and to hear directly from them about the inspiration behind their work.
Included is a Foreword by Academy Award winner Dan Hennah, 3 foot 7 Production Designer for the films. The book also features commentaries by Dan, 3 foot 7 Costume Designer Ann Maskrey, Academy Award Winners Peter King, 3 foot 7 Make-up and Hair Designer, and Weta Workshop’s Design and Special Effects Supervisor Richard Taylor. In addition to artist quotes, cast members reflect on the work and share insights into their involvement in the design process.
“We are very excited to be creating a series of books that celebrate the amazing work that is being done on The Hobbit movies. They will show the incredible attention to detail that goes into everything that is being produced for these films and are a wonderful opportunity to showcase the designs and artistry of so many people within their respective departments.” Richard Taylor, Weta Workshop.
Readers will be able to follow the design process as it unfolds with early sketches and final designs. The book offers an unprecedented insight into the conceptual processes behind the making of an epic film.
“We are thrilled to be involved with the Weta Publishing team in the creation of the Hobbit (Specialist) Books. It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work produced by our amazingly talented artists & craftspeople who are responsible for conceptualizing, designing & building the sets, props and dressings for The Hobbit.” Dan Hennah, 3 foot 7 Art Department.
The book is written by Weta Workshop senior designer Daniel Falconer. Daniel has an excellent pedigree in all things related to Middle-earth, being a pivotal concept designer on The Lord of the Rings and now part of the Weta Workshop design team on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He is also an avid fan of the books of J.R.R. Tolkien, making him eminently suited to telling the stories of the artisans’ work based on Tolkien’s book; The Hobbit.
'''''The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: Chronicles: Creatures & Characters''''' is a book which details the work of [[Weta Workshop]] on the heroes, villains, beasts and beings in ''[[The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey]]''.

==From the Publishers==

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Chronicles, Creatures & Characters explores the amazing cast of heroes and villains, beasts and beings that populate Middle-earth in the first chapter of Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Richly illustrated with behind-the-scenes photographs, digital renders and film stills, this comprehensive book goes species by species, character by character, through the film’s huge ensemble of characters and bustling menagerie of creatures, both physical and digital, telling the stories of how each came to be realized for the film.
In first-hand quotes from the actors, make-up artists, digital effects artists, dialect coaches, prosthetics technicians, movement coach and many other crew, the stories of the production unfold, processes are described and insights into characters shared.
As a bonus feature, unique to this book, there is a special fold-out Character Size Chart, which compares all the major creatures and characters of the film, from Radagast’s hedgehog friend to the towering Stone Giants!
Compiled by Weta Workshop designer Daniel Falconer, and featuring a wealth of stunning imagery, this book puts the reader face to face with the Dwarf heroes of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the dark denizens of Middle-earth, such as Orcs, Goblins, Trolls and Wargs, and of course, the hobbit himself, Bilbo Baggins.
It is difficult to put link sources when I just created the page and was begining to edit including informations, and you delete the page... Be more pacient. Otherwise it will be hard to help this wiki. {{unsigned|Sigurd }}

:Couple of things:
* Add new messages at the ''bottom'' of the talk page. They go in chronological order from old to new.
* The entire concept is vague. "Books that inspired Tolkien"? Inspired him on what? To write a book? To become a philologist? To write an alternate mythology for England? To write a specific element?
* As I said, sources. The only source you list is a summary of his personal library, without explaining how this book being in his library inspired him. Unless you have a specific sources that explicitly says Book X inspired him to do action Y, it's just speculation.
* No content other than a list. The introduction is essentially "Books that have inspired Tolkien are books that have inspired Tolkien".
* Basic layout and spelling. That's something that you should do before saving the page.
:As this is a vague and slippery slope (just as our existing train wreck [[Inspirations]] is), it adds nothing at the moment. Without addressing all these points (apart from the first, naturally), I see no point in having it. --{{User:Ederchil/sig}} 13:38, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

:Couple of things:
* Whatever. If you see the message works.
* To put links, sources and more informations need time to included.
* I was working in that page and adding all informations. But is Impossible to do this when someone came and deleted the page... minutes after I began to write.
'''Celebrían''' ([[Sindarin|S]], pron. {{IPA|[keleˈbriː.an]}}; sailed West {{TA|2510}}<ref name="TA">{{App|TA}}</ref>) was an [[Elves|Elf]]-lady of [[Lothlórien]], the daughter of [[Celeborn]] and [[Galadriel]]. As the wife of [[Elrond]], she was also known as Lady of [[Rivendell]]. She was the mother of [[Arwen]] and the twins [[Elrohir]] and [[Elladan]]. Her daughter would later marry [[Aragorn|Aragorn Elessar]], hero of the [[War of the Ring]], and become the Queen of the [[Reunited Kingdom]].

==History==
Celebrían lived in the Elven Kingdom of [[Eregion]], and later moved to [[Lothlórien|Lórien]] with her mother sometime between {{SA|1350}} and {{SA|1400}}. In {{SA|1701}} she went to [[Rivendell]] with Galadriel searching for Celeborn, where she first met Lord Elrond.<ref>{{UT|Galadriel}}, ''Concerning Galadriel and Celeborn''</ref> Centuries later they would marry, in the year {{TA|109|n}} of the Third Age.<ref name="TA"/>

In {{TA|2509}}, on a trip to [[Lothlórien|Lórien]] to visit her parents, she was waylaid by [[Orcs]] in the [[Redhorn Pass]] of the [[Misty Mountains]]. She was captured and tormented, receiving a poisoned wound. Her sons rescued her and she was physically healed by Elrond, but she never fully recovered in mind or spirit, and no longer wished to stay in Middle-earth. She left for the [[Grey Havens]] and passed over the [[Belegaer|Great Sea]] the following year.<ref name="TA"/>
{{disambig-two|discoverer of [[wikipedia:England|England]]|the first man who discovered [[Tol Eressëa]], since [[Eärendil]],|[[Ælfwine]]}}
'''Ottor Wǽfre''', the son of [[Eoh]], was born in Angeln, between the Flensburg Fjord and the Schlei River. After his father was killed by his uncle, [[Beorn (son of Eoh)|Beorn]], he fled to the island [[wikipedia:Heligoland|Heligoland]] where he married [[Cwén]]. He is the father of [[Hengest]] and [[Horsa]], who later become great chiefs of their people.

While sailing the Sea, Ottor followed the directions of an old man who turned out to be [[Ulmo]], and was cast away on [[Tol Eressea]]. He was welcomed by the [[Elves]] there who gave him the name '''Eriol Sarothron''' ("Lone dreamer" and "Voyager") also called '''Angol''' (after the "iron cliffs" of his home). [[Lindo]] hosted him in the [[Cottage of Lost Play]] of Kortirion where they were celebrating the [[Turuhalmë]].

There, he met and talked with [[Rúmil (elf of Tirion)|Rúmil]], [[Eltas]], [[Gilfanon]] and others, all eager to teach him the origin of the [[Arda|World]] and tales from the [[Elder Days]]. Eriol also learned the origin of the land of [[Luthany]].

==Other versions of the legendarium==
Eriol's arrival to Eressea is the frame story of ''[[The Book of Lost Tales]]'', the first conception of [[Tolkien]]'s [[legendarium]].

The story follows Ottor's exploration of the Isle and meeting with the Elves who are willing to narrate their lore about the creation of the world, the origins of Elves, Dwarves and Men, their wars against the Enemy and the origins of [[Luthany]] (Britain); each Elf narrates another part of the history, forming what would be consist ''[[The Silmarillion]]'' decades later.

Later in the story, Ottor narrates his own background and how he came to arrive to Eressea; the Elves also tell him their prophecies concerning their return to Luthany and the rekindling of the [[Two Trees]].

The names of Ottor's sons are significant to the historical context of the Eriol story. In British folklore, [[wikipedia:Hengist and Horsa|Hengest and Horsa]] are the legendary leaders of the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain in the 5th century. By connecting them to the translator of the ''Lost Tales'', Tolkien would have established a direct link between his legendarium and the [[wikipedia:Matter of Britain|Matter of Britain]].

In later works of Tolkien, the figure of Eriol was renamed '''[[Ælfwine]]''' and was given a different background. Rather than a Saxon of the 5th century (predating the establishment of England), Ælfwine is revised as an Anglo-Saxon citizen of 10th century England. However, neither Eriol nor Ælfwine appear in the published ''Silmarillion''.
The '''Kinslaying at Alqualondë''', or the '''First Kinslaying''', was an important event in the history of the [[Eldar]] in which the [[Noldor]]in [[Elves]] of [[Fëanor]] killed [[Teleri]] Elves in order to gain their ships.
==Background==
When [[Fëanor]] decided to leave [[Valinor]] he needed ships to travel to Middle-earth, but the Noldor possessed no ships, and Fëanor feared that any delay in their departure would cause the Noldor to reconsider. The Noldor, led by Fëanor and his sons, tried to persuade the [[Teleri]] of [[Alqualondë]], to give him their ships. However, the Teleri would not help them, since it was against the will of the [[Valar]], and in fact attempted to persuade their friends to reconsider their decision to leave. Displeased with the Teleri's answer, the [[Noldor]] started taking the ships by force. This angered the Teleri, and they threatened the Noldor with rocks and arrows, and they threw many of Fëanor's Ñoldor out of the ships into the harbor. They also attempted to block the harbour.

Then the Noldor drew swords, and the Teleri their [[Bows|bows]], and there was a bitter fight that seemed evenly matched, until the second Host of the Ñoldor, led by [[Fingon]], arrived together with some of [[Fingolfin]]'s people. Misunderstanding the situation, they assumed the Teleri had attacked the Ñoldor under orders of the Valar, and they joined the fight. In the end, many Teleri were slain and the ships were taken. The ones that continued towards Middle-earth were therefore [[Doom_of_Mandos|cursed by Mandos]].
}}'''Maedhros''' ([[Sindarin|S]], pron. {{IPA|[ˈmaɛðros]}}) was one of the princes of the [[Noldor]] and was eldest of the [[Sons of Fëanor]].

==History==
Maedhros was born during the Time of the [[Two Trees]] in [[Valinor]]. After the banishment of [[Fëanor]] from [[Tirion]] in Valinor he went with his father to [[Formenos]] in exile. When [[Morgoth]] killed Finwë and stole Fëanor's beloved [[Silmarils]], Maedhros was the first son to take the terrible [[Oath of Fëanor]] to recover the jewels.

Maedhros went with his father to [[Alqualondë]], where the [[First Kinslaying]] broke out, in which he took part. When Fëanor sailed off without the host of [[Fingolfin]], Maedhros thought that he was planning to return and carry across the others. He expected that the first ship would carry [[Fingon]], his best friend. When he learned that in fact, Fëanor planned to abandon them, he was angry and, alone of his brothers, refused to help burn the ships, to prevent Fingolfin from following.

[[File:Ted Nasmith - Maedhros’s Rescue from Thangorodrim.jpg|thumb|left|[[Ted Nasmith]] - Maedhros’s Rescue from Thangorodrim]]
When Fëanor was killed in the [[Dagor-nuin-Giliath]], Maedhros became the [[High King of the Noldor]]. However, this position was held briefly, as [[Morgoth]] sent an embassy, feigning the surrender of a Silmaril. The Oath driving him, Maedhros also feigned to treat with Morgoth, but instead he was captured by Morgoth's embassy and hung by the wrist of his right hand upon the face of a precipice of [[Thangorodrim]], for about thirty years. In a daring rescue, his cousin [[Fingon]], helped by [[Thorondor]] the King of Eagles, saved him from torment, but he had to cut off Maedhros's hand to release him from the shackle. In gratitude for this, and in atonement for Fëanor's desertion of Fingon's house, Maedhros relinquished all claim as the heir of Finwë and made his uncle [[Fingolfin]], Fingon's father, High King of the Noldor, something his brothers did not like.

Seeing that his brothers were likely to cause feuds with their kinsmen, Maedhros moved them out of [[Hithlum]], and later ruled the lands around the [[Hill of Himring]], which became known as the [[March of Maedhros]]. Allied with Fingolfin, he won the battle of [[Dagor Aglareb]], and, thanks to his daring deeds during the [[Dagor Bragollach]], [[Himring]] stood while many other elven realms fell.

Hearing word of the deeds of [[Beren]] and [[Lúthien]], he took hope and gathered his brothers and united with other Elven Houses to create the [[Union of Maedhros]], an alliance to lay siege to Morgoth's fortress of [[Angband]]. However, no support came from [[Thingol]] or [[Nargothrond]], due to the deeds of [[Celegorm]] and [[Curufin]], Maedhros' brothers. The Union and the siege was utterly broken after the defeat in the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]]. Himring was garrisoned by [[Orcs]]. Maedhros and his brothers lived in [[Ossiriand]], consorting with the [[Laiquendi]].

Maedhros learned that [[Dior]], son of Beren and Lúthien, had inherited the Silmaril that they had recovered from Morgoth. Still driven by the Oath, he allowed his brother [[Celegorm]] to convince him to attack Doriath. Celegorm, [[Caranthir]], and [[Curufin]] were slain by [[Dior|Dior Eluchíl]], the King of Doriath, who was in turn slain by them. Dior's sons, [[Eluréd]] and [[Elurín]], were captured and abandoned by Celegorm's servants in the forest, leading Maedhros to search for the innocent youths, but to no avail. After learning that [[Elwing]], Dior's daughter, had survived, he and his surviving brothers descended with an army upon the remnants of the people of Doriath living in the [[Havens of Sirion]]. The Noldorin princes killed many Elves and captured Elwing's sons [[Elrond]] and [[Elros]] in the sack, but Elwing escaped with the Silmaril, jumping off a cliff.

[[File:Ted Nasmith - Maedhros Casts Himself into a Chasm.jpg|thumb|[[Ted Nasmith]] - ''Maedhros Casts Himself into a Chasm'']]
After the [[War of Wrath]], he and his last surviving brother, [[Maglor]] stole the two remaining Silmarils taken by the [[Valar]] from Morgoth. But because of the evil deeds committed by the brothers to regain the jewels, they burned in Maglor's and Maedhros's hands. Unable to bear the suffering, Maedhros cast himself and the Silmaril he carried into a fiery chasm in the Earth. He is the only known [[Elf]] to have committed suicide. It is uncertain whether he was eventually released from [[Mandos]], or whether he still remains there with his father.

== Etymology ==
Maedhros' [[father-name]] was '''[[Nelyafinwë]]''', meaning "Finwë the Third", shorter form '''Nelyo''', as his grandfather and father both shared the name ''Finwë''. ''[[Nelya]]'' is a [[Quenya]] adjective that means "third". His [[Amilessë|mother-name]] was '''[[Maitimo]]''', "Well-shaped One", for he was noted for his comeliness. His [[epessë]] was '''[[Russandol]]''', "Copper-top", referring to the dark red hair he inherited from his grandfather [[Mahtan]]. It is derived from ''[[russa]]'', a Quenya adjective meaning "red-haired".

In ''[[The Shibboleth of Fëanor]]'', note# 65, it is said that the names Maitimo and Russandol are the base for the [[Sindarization|Sindarized]] name Maedhros (derived from a contraction of ''Mait-'' + ''Rus-'').

In the earlier work ''[[The Etymologies]]'', the name Maedhros is original [[Noldorin]], and is said to mean "Pale-glitter". It is formed by the adding up ''[[maidh]]'' ("pale", "fallow" or "fawn") and "archaic" ''[[rhoss]]'' ("flash", "glitter of metal").

[[File:Narfil Palùrfalas - Gondolin Plan.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Map of Gondolin showing the '''Great Market''' on the eastern side]]
The '''Great Market''' was a large market on the east side of [[Gondolin]] mentioned in the ''[[Fall of Gondolin]]''. It was defended by [[Glorfindel of Gondolin|Glorfindel]] and the [[House of the Golden Flower]] upon the sack of the city, and was burned there. After the rebellious [[House of the Harp]] threw themselves on the [[orcs]], they were pushed back to this market, where a [[Fire-drake]] consumed many of them.<ref>{{LT2|III}}, p. 182</ref>

Because in the ''Fall'' a west-gate, a north-gate, and a south-gate are all mentioned in, it is not improbable that at this stage in the legendarium Tolkien had also envisioned an east-gate. This being the case, those coming from the east (deeper in the mountains, and thus possibly where the greater number of the mines were) would come straight onto the Great Market. This, of course, is purely conjecture.
