The '''House of Bëor''', also known as the '''First House of the Edain''', was the name given to the first of the three Houses of the [[Edain]] to cross the [[Ered Luin]] into [[Beleriand]] after travelling west, driven forth by the terrors wrought by Morgoth in the east. From the House of Bëor would come many famous lords and heroes, most notably [[Beren|Beren Erchamion]] who claimed a [[Silmaril]] from [[Morgoth|Morgoth's]] [[Iron Crown]].

The [[Men]] of the House of Bëor descended from the tribes of Men who abandoned [[Hildórien]] for the [[Aman|West]]. They were at war with the [[Men of Darkness|Men]] who fell under the [[Shadow]], and were pursued by them.<ref name=DM>{{PM|Atani}}</ref> They followed a road around northern [[Rhûn]] where they met some [[Dwarves]].<ref>{{WJ|Dwarves}}</ref> At the shores of the [[Sea of Rhûn]] a small part was separated, which would later become the House of Bëor. The Greater Folk, the ancestors of the [[House of Hador|House of Marach]], came later in the north-east woods near the shores. They crafted boats and could sail the inland Sea, and seemed to had been related to the ancestors of the [[Northmen]].<ref>{{UT|Cirion}}</ref>

Finrod befriended the House of Bëor (the First House of the [[Edain]]) and persuaded [[Thingol]], overlord of [[Beleriand]] to grant the new arrivals lands which to inhabit. Thingol gave to them (and the other two Edain Houses that followed) land in the realm of the Noldorin Elf-lords [[Amrod]] and [[Amras]], the youngest sons of [[Fëanor]], of which this land was thereafter known as [[Estolad]], the Encampment.

The Bëorians were noted as being very akin to the Noldor in their appearance. They had dark or brown hair with grey or brown eyes, and some among them were fair-haired; their skin ranged from fair to even swarthy. Most were broad and of stocky build; those as tall as those of the Folk of Hador were rare.<ref name=DM/>{{rp|308}}<ref name=Men>{{S|Men}}</ref>

They were eager, smart and quick in learning, cunning-handed and long in memory. A family of [[Faithful]] from [[Númenor]] had ruled over the land of [[Belfalas]] since the [[Second Age]]. This family of [[Númenóreans]] were akin to the [[Lords of Andúnië]], and thus related to [[Elendil]] and descended from the [[House of Elros]].<ref>{{UT|Cirion}}</ref> After the [[Downfall of Númenor]] they had been given the title ''Prince of Belfalas'' by [[Elendil]]<ref>{{UT|Cirion}}, Note 39</ref> and their land, now a fief of [[Gondor]], was called [[Dor-en-Ernil]]. He granted this family a noble title, making them the hereditary Princes of Belfalas.

One branch of their descendants removed to [[Lossarnach]].<ref name="Isen">{{UT|Isen}}</ref> [[Morwen Steelsheen]], a daughter of that family, married [[Thengel]] of [[Rohan]]. Through Morwen, both Thengel's heir [[Théoden]] and his grandson [[Éomer]] carried the blood of the ancient Princes of Belfalas.

Under the leadership of [[Balan]] (later called [[Bëor]]), they crossed over the mountains into Thargelion in {{FA|310}} and there were discovered by the Noldorin King [[Finrod|Finrod Felagund]], eldest son of [[Finarfin]], thus they were the first men to encounter one of the Eldar. Finrod befriended the House of Bëor (the First House of the [[Edain]]) and persuaded [[Thingol]], overlord of [[Beleriand]] to grant the new arrivals lands which to inhabit. Thingol gave to them (and the other two Edain Houses that followed) land in the realm of the Noldorin Elf-lords [[Amrod]] and [[Amras]], the youngest sons of [[Fëanor]], of which this land was thereafter known as [[Estolad]], the Encampment.

In {{FA|402|n}}, there was fighting in the northern marches of Beleriand where the [[Orcs]] attempted to break through the [[Pass of Aglon]]. They were repelled by forces from the [[House of Fëanor]] under [[Maedhros]] and [[Maglor]], the [[House of Finarfin]], and the [[House of Bëor]], who become the first among Men to draw swords on behalf of the [[Eldar]] of Beleriand.<ref>{{WJ|P1}}</ref> In {{FA|410|n}}, the region of [[Ladros]] in [[Dorthonion]] was granted to the House of Bëor, with their chief, [[Boromir (Lord of Ladros)|Boromir]], becoming the first [[Lord of Ladros]].<ref>{{WJ|14}}, p. 228-9</ref> This fiefdom was short-lived, however, as it was overtaken by Morgoth's forces during the [[Dagor Bragollach]] in {{FA|455|n}}; during this assault [[Bregolas]], the third Lord of Ladros, was slain, leaving the leadership of the ruined house to his brother [[Barahir]].

Barahir did what he could to ensure the House's survival, sending the women and children to safety under the leadership of his wife [[Emeldir]]. They went to the forest of [[Brethil]] where some merged with the [[House of Haleth|Haladin]], but others (including [[Rían]] and [[Morwen]]) continued on to [[Dor-lómin]] and joined with the people of [[Galdor (Lord of Dor-lómin)|Galdor]]. Meanwhile Barahir remained in Dorthonion with his son [[Beren]], Bregolas' sons [[Baragund]] and [[Belegund]], and a dwindling company of men. Pressed by [[Sauron]] from [[Tol-in-Gaurhoth]] this company was eventually betrayed by one of their members [[Gorlim the Unhappy]], revealing Barahir's hideout at [[Tarn Aeluin]]. All the company were destroyed save Beren who was away scouting when the attack happened. None the less, from that point on the House of Bëor ceased to be an independent entity and its people joined the surviving Houses of Men.

The Bëorians were noted as being very akin to the Noldor in their appearance. They had dark or brown hair with grey or brown eyes, and some among them were fair-haired; their skin ranged from fair to even swarthy. Most were broad and of stocky build; those as tall as those of the Folk of Hador were rare.<ref name=DM/>{{rp|308}}<ref name=Men>{{S|Men}}</ref>

They were eager, smart and quick in learning, cunning-handed and long in memory. They were moved sooner to pity than to laughter.<ref name=Men/> They are also described to be more steadfast even than the Folk of Hador, fortituously enduring hardships and sorrows, slow to cry and to laugh.<ref name=DM/>

Many of those descended from Bëorian stock had the traits most akin to those of the Noldor, such as [[Túrin|Túrin Turambar]] whose mother [[Morwen|Morwen Eledhwen]] was Bëorian. He was mistaken for one of the Noldor, inspiring his name ''Adanedhel'', meaning 'Man-elf'.

===Realm of Arnor===
Elendil and his two sons, Isildur and [[Anárion]] founded the two [[Númenóreans|Númenórean]] realms in exile: Arnor and Gondor. Elendil was the High King of all of the [[Dúnedain]] but the rule of the southern kingdom of Gondor was delegated to joint ruled under his sons. After the War of the [[Last Alliance of Elves and Men]] both Elendil and Anárion were dead, so Isildur became the new High King. When he left Gondor to take up his kingship in Arnor he delegated rule of Gondor to Anárion’s son, [[Meneldil]]. However, Isildur and his first three sons perished in the [[Disaster of the Gladden Fields]]. From that time forward the two realms were sundered, with the [[Kings of Gondor]] descending from the [[House of Anárion]] and the [[Kings of Arnor]] descending from the House of Isildur.

The [[pre-Númenóreans|ancestors]] of the Haladin moved from [[Hildórien]] to the [[Westlands|West]]. During their migration they joined the [[Drúedain]] near the [[White Mountains]] and stayed with them on friendly terms.{{fact}}

When the core of their team was pressed to wander on, some Drúedain accompanied them northwards{{fact}}, passing through the [[Gap of Rohan|opening between]] the [[Misty Mountains]] and the [[White Mountains]]. Many stayed behind because of the dense forest covering the [[Minhiriath]] and the western half of [[Enedwaith]] between the [[Greyflood]] and the [[Isen]] and became herd-tenders. Their descendants were peoples in the forests of the shore-lands south of the [[Blue Mountains]], especially in Minhiriath<ref>{{PM|X}}</ref>

Their kin of the White Mountains apparently were later driven off (from the most part) by [[Men of Darkness]] during the [[Dark Years]], removed to the southern dales of the [[Misty Mountains]] and thence some passed into the empty lands until the [[Barrow-downs]], from whom came the [[Men of Bree]].<ref name=F>{{App|Men}}</ref>

The Haladin entered Beleriand in {{FA|312}}.<ref>{{WJ|14}}, p. 227</ref> They came secretly in small parties in the woods of [[Ossiriand]], and were in strife among themselves. The [[Laegil]] were unfriendly to them. Their numbers are not known, but they were probably more than 2000.<ref name=atani>{{PM|Atani}}</ref>

Unlike The [[House of Bëor]] before them and the [[House of Hador]] after, they did not advance to [[Estolad]] but instead dwelt without leave in the south of [[Caranthir]]'s realm of [[Thargelion]].<ref name=guide/> The Haladin had no overall leader and so settled in scattered groups in that region.

[[Morgoth]] already knew about the coming of hostile Men to Beleriand and sent his servants to afflict the Haladin.<ref name=atani/> So their style of living came to an end in {{FA|375}} when a host of orcs assaulted their territory. In answer to this [[Haldad]] took command of the people, building [[Gelion-Ascar Stockade|a stockade between]] the angle of the rivers [[Gelion]] and [[Ascar]] south of [[Sarn Athrad]]. There he led the [[Battle of the Gelion-Ascar Stockade|defence of his people]] until he and his son [[Haldar]] were slain whereupon his daughter [[Haleth]] took up the leadership of the house and held out for a week until Caranthir's army could relieve them.<ref name=guide/>

In honour of the valiance of Haleth, Caranthir offered the House of Haleth a feif in his lands but Haleth declined and instead led her people away passing through Estolad and [[Nan Dungortheb]] before temporarily inhabiting [[Talath Dirnen]]. King [[Thingol]] of [[Doriath]] granted to Haleth the [[Forest of Brethil]] on condition that she defended the [[Crossings of Taeglin]]. She led then her people (now known as the '''Halethrim''', the '''House of Haleth''' in her honour) and they settled as woodsmen centered around the capital of [[Amon Obel]]. For the following years they guarded the northern flank of [[Nargothrond]].<ref name=guide/> Both Doriath and Brethil refused to play any great part in [[War of the Jewels|the war]] of the [[Noldor|Ñoldor]] and their allies and only seldom did the Haladin march to war alongside them.

Eventually Haleth died but as she had produced no heirs the title of [[Chieftain of the Haladin]] returned to her brother Haldar's line and to his son [[Haldan]]. During his rule, in {{FA|436}}<ref>{{GA|161|note}}</ref> there was a great feast of the Edain, when two of his grandchildren married into the [[House of Hador]]; [[Haldir (Chieftain of the Haladin)|Haldir]], his heir married Hador's daughter [[Glóredhel]], while [[Hareth]] married Hador's son [[Galdor (Lord of Dor-lómin)|Galdor]].<ref>{{S|Fingolfin}}</ref> Hareth's famed sons [[Húrin]] and [[Huor]] were fostered for a while by Haldir in Brethil.

Haldan ruled for 31 years before dying leaving the leadership of the house to his son [[Halmir]]. Four years after in {{FA|455}}, [[Morgoth]] broke the [[Siege of Angband]] in the [[Dagor Bragollach]]. As usual, the Halethrim played no active part in the battle but fought the hosts of orcs that threatened their realm with the aid of the [[Sindar]] of Doriath under [[Beleg|Beleg Cúthalion]].

After the loss of [[Dorthonion]], their numbers were joined by refugees from the [[House of Bëor|First House]].<ref name=guide/>

After the fall of [[Minas Tirith in Beleriand|Minas Tirith]], the Haladin were harassed by frequent Orc-raids in the Crossings from [[Tol-in-Gaurhoth]].<ref name=guide/>

When the [[Union of Maedhros]] was formed, Halmir offered the aid of the House of Haleth and made preparations for war but a year prior to the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] he died and the promise was left for his son Haldir to fulfill. Haldir took part in the battle where the Haladin covered the retreat of [[Fingon]] and suffered heavy losses on [[Anfauglith]]. Haldir was slain alongside his brother [[Hundar]].<ref name=guide/>

The son of Haldir [[Handir]] took up the leadership but he himself was slain in one of the many orc raids on Brethil at that time and the position passed to his son [[Brandir]]. Their defeat allowed the forces of the enemy to access and [[sack of Nargothrond|sack Nargothrond]].<ref name=guide/>

After the death of [[Handir]] the Haladin dwindled and became more reclusive but survived on. They remained in their woods, occasionally ambushing Orcs at the Crossings.<ref name=guide/>

It was during the reign of Brandir that [[Túrin|Túrin Turambar]] son of Húrin came to Brethil and became in all but name its leader, leading them in warfare in much the same manner as he had the elves of [[Nargothrond]]. Túrin's presence brought the dragon [[Glaurung]] to Brethil and though Túrin succeeded in slaying the beast, he slew Brandir in a rage as the final threads sparing him from his doom unravelled. Túrin's suicide ended that period in the history of the Haladin.

But their dealings with Húrin and his cursed kin were not yet over for Húrin himself came among them after twenty eight years of captivity in Angband. Now a broken man he succeeded in sparking a civil war in the House of Haleth owing to his perception of the treatment of his [[Morwen|wife]] whom he found at the [[Stone of the Hapless|grave of their children]]. [[Obel Halad]] was burnt and all potential heirs slain or driven away in the anarchy that followed.<ref>{{WJ|Hurin}}, pp. 291-4</ref> In that way did the House of Haleth cease to be in the year {{FA|500}}. The Drúedain who had dwelt in Beleriand were reduced to a few families of mainly women and children, who fled to the [[Mouths of Sirion]].<ref>{{UT|Druedain}}, third paragraph</ref>

Little information is given as to the physical characteristics of the House of Haleth, save for the fact that they were shorter in stature than those of the House of Bëor.<ref name=Druedain>{{UT|12c}}, note 2</ref><ref name=West>{{S|West}}</ref> The were described as being similar in appearance to members of the House of Bëor, suggesting dark or brown hair and grey eyes.<ref name=West/>

The Haladin belonged to a different branch than the other Edain of the west, and differed in a number of ways. They spoke [[Halethian]], an unrelated dialect of [[Mannish]],<ref name="guide" /> and although some of them learned [[Sindarin]] to communicate with the [[Eldar]] and the other Edain, they were not fluent in it.<ref name=atani/>

Their numbers were fewer<ref name=guide/> and their birth rates were slightly enough to compensate for their losses to the war; women were fewer than men, and many remained unwed.<ref name=atani/><ref name=note>{{PM|XNotes}}, #50</ref>

They were secretive and conservative, unwilling to adopt new things and customs, remaining apart, preferring solitude and to protect their woodlands instead of allying themselves with the [[Elves]] and participating to the greater events. They had their own customs and practices that seemed strange to the Elves and Edain alike, like their ancient practice of having women warriors and amazons (like Haleth, who had a picked bodyguard of women),<ref name=atani/> perhaps owing to their small numbers.<ref name=note/>

Indeed, they excelled in forest warfare, and Orcs, even especially trained for this, dared not to cross their borders. They had a few dealings with the outsiders except their participation to the War where they proved loyal allies; reflecting their population, they sent small companies (rarely women<ref name=note/>) beyond their borders, who were esteemed as redoubtable warriors.<ref name=atani/>

The '''House of Anárion''' was the extended house of the nobles and royalty of [[Gondor]], descended from its first [[Kings of Gondor|Kings]].

==History==
The house included the Kings of Gondor and their heirs, of course, but also their siblings and their descendants. On several occasions, the direct line of descent failed in Gondor, and other members of the house were called on to take up the Kingship. Most notable among these was [[Meneldil]] himself, the first King to rule Gondor in his own right, who took up the throne on the death of his uncle [[Isildur]].

There are examples of members of the Royal House being granted important military roles. For example, the great [[Gondorians|Gondorian]] general [[Eärnil II|Eärnil]] was a member of the Royal House, being a descendant of [[Telumehtar]], great-grandfather to the reigning King [[Ondoher]]. Indeed, when Ondoher and his heirs were lost, [[Eärnil II|Eärnil]] eventually succeeded to the Kingship himself.

One important political role, however, was closed to members of the Royal House: that of Steward. When [[Rómendacil I]] created the Stewardship, he specified that no member of the House should ever take the role. The descendants of the [[House of Húrin]], who would eventually take on the hereditary Stewardship of the realm, were noted as being of high [[Númenóreans|Númenórean]] blood (they had some share in the actual blood of Elendil and Anarion, and so were ultimately of royal origin<ref>J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (ed.), The Peoples of Middle-earth, "VII. The Heirs of Elendil"</ref>), but they were not members of the Royal House itself.

At the last years of the Kingship, royal descendants of pure Númenórean blood had become few; several of the last Kings were childless and heirs were chosen from the House, until the death of [[Eärnur]]; no claimant for the throne could be found or whose claim all would accept, and people were afraid of a new [[Kin-strife]] that would devastate the kingdom.<ref name="Gondor">{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

When [[Denethor|Denethor II]] was about to immolate himself upon a pyre, he proudly told [[Gandalf]] that he was a "Steward of the House of Anárion". ==Third Line==
After the deaths of Théoden and his only son, his nephew Éomer became king, who fought with great distinction at the [[Battle of the Pelennor Fields]] where Théoden was killed. Just like Fréalaf, Éomer was closely related to the previous king. Thus began the Third Line of the Kings of Rohan, concurrent with the [[Reunited Kingdom]].
