Suliad mellon!

As you might have guessed, I am a huge fan of Tolkien. My favorite Middle Earth race is Elves and the Men of Rohan and Gondor, my favorite Lord of the Rings character is Eowyn. I read the Hobbit when I was about seven, and when I was ten I had finished the Lord of the Rings. By now I have also read The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales of Numènor and Middle Earth.
I love the movie adaption for the Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit, although I do wish the Hobbit movie was a more accurate.

*I do think that the Entwives are not lost
*I think that balrogs have wings, probably of fire
*I speak some Sindarin, some Quenya and am learning more
*Some of my other favorite Lord of the Rings/Hobbit characters are: Legolas, Thranduil, Elrond, Galadriel (or any elf) Frodo, Mithrandir (Gandalf), and Faramir
*My favorite Silmarillion characters are Fingon, Orome, and Tulkas
*I have a lot of userboxes (scroll down)
Agree: I think it would be a wonderful to feature an article on a weapon, especially one with such an early history. The article is very engaging and well done -Sindarinelf
*Agree. Exellent Article! Besides, Gandalf is the heart of Tolkien's work. His article deserves to be featured. mthomas 12:30, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

*Agree. The first thing new users see is the main page, and generally people are most familiar with Gandalf. --Yurpee
*Disagree - I think it's a big cluttered in its structure and severely lacks sources required to make it worthy of the title. -- 14:23, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

*Agree. It definitely deserves to be featured, but I think later, after the revisions are done because of the Hobbit movies coming. Lilybell

*Agree. It is a well written article, the main picture is appropriate, and there are very little red links. This article gives a great introduction to Gandalf for someone who is new to Tolkien's works. Plus, the character is just all-around amazing. --Joszyboom

*Agree. I think it is an important fact that Gandalf is a Miar, and not just a human with powers. I don't think that many people would know that, but it is important and this will help. -- quark

*Agree. I remember when I was just getting into Tolkien's works in 6th grade with The Hobbit and had no idea who Gandalf was then I went to LOTR and Gandalf with the "You Shall Not Pass" I was amazed and started to delve deeper but that was my own initiative if this article goes on the home page then any new Tolkien reader would go and read it learning a substantial amount of knowledge. -- Aragorn is Awesome
*Agree. But, people get so excited about editing his article that they forget the citations...--Erónèhire 02:33, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
Dwalin
As Smaug has been featured for almost nine months now I think it is time to look for a new featured article. Personally I think Dwalin might be a good choice. It is well-writen, sourced, no maintaince templates and only one red link. Although Dwalin isn't as long as previous featured articles, it covers (almost) all information that can be found in the books. And, with The Hobbit (film series) coming this year people will search for more information about the Hobbit and characters/locations. Therefore it would be good if an article related to The Hobbit will appear on the main page. --Amroth 19:57, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Helm's Deep was a large valley gorge in the north-western Ered Nimrais (White Mountains) below the Thrihyrne. It was actually the name of the whole defensive system including its major defensive structure, the Hornburg.

Geography and description
The valley was blocked over its entire width by a trench and rampart called Helm's Dike and behind that lay the great fortress Hornburg. A large rampart known as the Deeping Wall blocked the valley; it consisted of solid rock except for a small culvert which allowed the Deeping-stream (a small stream) to pass. The stream flowed out of the Glittering Caves, a large cave system and the later site of Gimli's dwarf colony.

A long causeway wound up to the great gate of the fortress itself. Inside the keep there were stables and an armoury, as well as a high tower in the centre.

History
Originally the valley was home to a small Gondorian regiment, but after Calenardhon was ceded to the Éothéod it became an encampment of the Rohirrim of the Westfold, and was used to guard the Gap of Rohan.

During the war with the Dunlendings under Wulf, the Rohirrim under King Helm Hammerhand and many of his people sought refuge in the keep, where they held out during the Long Winter of 2758–2759. Helm and his horn gave their names to the features of the Deep.

During the War of the Ring the fortress guarding Helm's Deep again became the refuge of some of the Rohirrim, now under King Théoden, and the Battle of the Hornburg was fought there. After the battle, the Huorns laid the dead Uruk-hai of Saruman in a large mound known afterwards as the Death Down. The Dunlendings were buried more honourably in a separate mound below the Dike.

Portrayal in Adaptions
In The Lord of the Rings (film series) by Peter Jackson, the Rohirrim, along with Théoden and Éowyn go to Helm's Deep to the Hornbug, trying to escape from orcs ravaging the land. Éomer has been exiled but returns to Helm's Deep with Gandalf and an army to rescue the Rohirrim from the besieging orcs of Isenguard, sent by Saruman and aided by Gríma Wormtounge.
Sauron then came to Eregion with his full force, demanding the Rings. But Gil-galad sent an army to aid Celebrimbor; Elrond too set out to help defend the land. Yet before his arrival Celebrimbor was slain in a desperate last defense.
Sauron took the remaining Rings of Power, and destroyed the Elves of Eregion. Those who escaped joined Elrond, founding Rivendell or left Middle-Earth. The Elves of Eregion had passed into myth and legend.

Etymology
Eregion is a Sindarin word meaning, "land of holly".

- Éowyn - The Return of the King

Éowyn (2995 – Fourth Age ?), the Lady of Rohan, was also known as the Lady of the Shield-arm, the White Lady of Rohan, and Lady of Ithilien. She was a member of the House of Eorl and the niece of King Théoden of Rohan. She was the daughter of Théoden's sister, Théodwyn, and Éomund of Eastfold. Her brother was Éomer Éadig. Following the end of the War of the Ring, she and Faramir were married and bore one son, Elboron.

History
Following the death of her parents in 3002, Éowyn and Éomer were brought into Théoden's house and there raised. Éowyn grew to be tall and slender, with a grace and pride that came from her mother.

Prior to the Battle of the Hornburg, Éowyn was left to care for Meduseld when Théoden and Éomer led the remaining Rohirrim to the west. King Théoden in fact named her ruler of Rohan in his and Éomer's absence when the Doorward Háma recommended that one of "The House of Eorl" should rule. At first, Théoden only thought of male members, and he and Éomer were the last males of the House, but Háma reminded them of Éowyn, who "is fearless" and that "all love her".

Éowyn revealed her temperament when Aragorn was about to ride into the mountains to attempt to take the Paths of the Dead. Unable to dissuade him, she offered to accompany him, declaring herself "weary of skulking in the hills, and wish to face peril and battle." The only thing she feared was a cage. However, Aragorn reminded her of her charge to govern the people until the king's return and left without her.

Later, when the forces of Rohan were mustered to go to Gondor, Éowyn disguised herself as a man, and under the alias of Dernhelm, travelled with the Riders of Rohan, carrying with her Merry, who was also ordered to remain behind.

During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, she fought by King Théoden, and when he was injured during combat with the Witch-king of Angmar, she and Merry scrambled to help him. Confronting the Witch-king, who boasted that "no living man may hinder me," she removed her helmet, exposing her long golden hair and declaring:

<blockquote>"No living man am I! You look upon a woman."</blockquote>

Lady Éowyn slew the Witch-king after Merry stabbed him behind the knee. Merry's stab made the Witch-king vulnerable while Éowyn's slash actually resulted in death. She was granted the title "Lady of the Shield-arm" after the Battle in recognition of her triumph over the Witch-king.

Lady Éowyn was severely injured in this fight, and because of the poisonous effect of the Nazgûl, she faced near-certain death; however, she was treated in time by Aragorn during his brief rest in Minas Tirith. Since she didn't yet recover completely, she couldn't join Aragorn's army on their way to Mordor. However, while recuperating in the Houses of Healing, she met Faramir, with whom she fell in love.

After the demise of Sauron, the happily wed couple settled in Ithilien, of which Faramir was made the ruling Prince. Éowyn was known as the Lady of Ithilien. They married, and dwelt together in the hills of Emyn Arnen in Ithilien. They had at least one son (likely Elboron), and their grandson was Barahir, who wrote The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the Fourth Age.

Etymology
Éowyn means "Horse-joy" or "lover of horses" in Old English (being a combination of her parents' names: Éomund and Théodwyn), the language Tolkien adapted to represent Rohirric.

Éo- sounds like "eh-ah" with the "ah" just barely pronounced, while y is the same sound as German ü or French u.
Analysis
Just as MacDuff disconcerted Macbeth by revealing he was not "of woman born", Lady Éowyn found the loophole in the 1,000-year-old prophecy by Glorfindel, fulfilling that the Witch-king would not be slain by a man. However, the Witch-king actually recited the prophecy incorrectly: he said that "no living man may hinder me," though the prophecy actually said that "not by the hand of man will he fall." Glorfindel's prophesy, unlike his own version, implies that the Witch-king will not fall to a man. In Tolkien's writing, man and woman applies simply to the gender of any Middle-earth race. Only when he capitalised Man did it denote the race of Men. The Witch-king may not have realised that the prophecy meant only a male, thus, his moment of doubt and hesitation when he faced Éowyn.
:Elin Jenkins plays the part of Éowyn. She is introduced much earlier than in the book when Gandalf escapes from Isengard and borrows a horse from Theoden. :Éowyn is portrayed by Miranda Otto. Jackson's adaptation shows two different explanations for Éowyn's injuries after fighting the Witch-king. In the Theatrical Release, her wounds are less severe than in the book; she is conscious but hurt, as opposed to unconscious. In the extended scenes of the Extended Edition, she is near death: her brother finds her and grieves, and later we see her being healed in the Houses of Healing, where she shares a tender moment with Faramir.
Oromë was a Vala and one of the Aratar, also known as the Huntsman of the Valar and the Great Rider. He is considered one of the more powerful of the Valar.

Attributes
Oromë delights in hunting monsters and evil creatures, riding on his steed Nahar and blowing his great horn Valaróma. He loves horses and hounds as well as all trees and forests. In Yavanna's woods in Valinor he trains his folk and beasts for hunting. Oromë hunted all fowl beasts of Morgorth, and when he blew his horn all would know that the woods had been purged. Oromë is known for his terrible wrath, in contrast to Tulkas, who laughs often and is rarely angry.
Oromë was the brother of Nessa and the husband of Vána.

History
During the Years of the Trees, after most of the Valar had withdrawn completely from Middle-earth and hidden themselves in Aman, Oromë was the last who came to Valinor, and even then he still hunted in the forests of Middle-earth on occasion. He visited Middle-earth during the Sleep of Yavanna, hunting monsters and fell creatures and the shadows fled temporarily until he left.

Thus, he was responsible for finding the Elves when they awoke at Cuiviénen, and was the first to name them the Eldar. Seeking to ensure their safety, Oromë accompanied the Elves from Cuiviénen to Beleriand. Being a powerful huntsman, he was active in the struggles against Morgoth, who feared Oromë in his anger.

Because Oromë was the only Vala who travelled in Middle-earth during the Elder Days, it was believed, even during the Third Age that the wild oxen found near the Sea of Rhun descended from his Kine.

Etymology
The name Oromë is said to be derived from his Valarin name Arōmēz.

His name is translated as "Horn-blowing" and "Sound of Horns".

Other names
Araw ([ˈaraʊ]) was the Sindarin form of the name of the Oromë, while its North Sindarin form was Arum.

Tauron was an epithet used by the Sindar for Oromë. In the Valaquenta, Tauron is translated as "Lord of Forests". Another translation is "The Forester". The language, to which the name pertains, remains non-explicit in Tolkien's texts:
#Quenya word? The root of the word could be taure ("great wood") plus the ending -on. The name would thus have the sense "One of forests".
#Sindarin word? This would be suggested by its usage among the Sindar and by the Noldorin form it replaced (see below).

Béma was the name used by the Northmen for Oromë. As the great huntsman and horseman of the Valar, he and his steed Nahar were known to the horse-loving people of Rohan, who claimed that their great horses, the Mearas, had ancestors brought out of the West by Béma himself.
The name Béma is also from the tongue of Rohan (Tolkien was inspired by the Old English word béme "trumpet").

Tolkien used at least two earlier forms of the by-name Tauron:
#Tavros - the form Tauros replaced - used in such early texts as the Lay of Leithian. The name is Gnomish, defined as "Chief wood fay 'the Blue Spirit of the Woods'".
}}

The Sack of Eregion was the campaign in which Sauron destroyed Eregion to find the three Elven Rings of power or to find out where they are by torture. He also scattered the Elves that lived there.

Background
In 1200, Sauron came to Eregion in disguise, claiming to be an emissary of the Valar sent to offer aid to the Eldar. Although rejected by Gil-galad, he was able to win over Celebrimbor and the smiths of Eregion. The brotherhood of smiths, the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, profited from his knowledge and around 1500 they began forging the Rings of Power, finishing them in 1590. Unbeknownst to them, Sauron (who had returned to Mordor) created a master Ring to rule the others. However, Celebrimbor perceived the designs of Sauron and warned the bearers of the Elven rings, preventing use of the Three Rings which Sauron craved most.

The Battle
Infuriated by Celebrimbor's defiance, Sauron led a host out of Mordor. In 1695, this army ravaged Eriador from the south. Gil-galad sent out a force under the command of Elrond which joined with Celebrimbor, but they were unable to prevent Sauron from conquering Eregion.

In 1697, Ost-in-Edhil fell, with Celebrimbor himself leading a last desperate defence on the steps of the Jewel-smiths' guild house. He was taken captive by the Orcs, tormented into revealing the location of the Rings of Power, then shot through with Orc-arrows, and by some accounts, Sauron used Celebrimbor's body as a banner as he turned to face Elrond's army approaching from the north.

Elrond would have been overwhelmed but for an attack upon Sauron's force from the rear by Dwarves of Khazad-dûm and a force of Galadhrim lead by Amroth. Elrond was able to gather what remained of the Elves of Eregion and retreated northward.

Other survivors escaped into Khazad-dûm and were granted passage by their friends the Dwarves, coming eventually through the Mountains to the woodlands that would long afterwards be called Lórien.

Aftermath
Elrond, Celeborn, Elves of Lindon, and other Elves who fled the destruction of Eregion, established Imladris in 1697. Many more refugees joined Elrond's host as Sauron ravaged Eriador during the course of the war. By 1700, Imladris, despite being besieged, was the only part of Eriador not under Sauron's control. It was liberated by Gil-galad's and Tar-Minastir's forces. After Sauron's defeat, a Council was held at that time, establishing Elrond as Gil-galad's vice-regent in Eriador and that Imladris should be maintained as an Elvish stronghold.

Many survivors of Eregion also sailed West after their realm was sacked.

Once the Dwarves returned to Khazad-dûm, the Doors of Durin were shut and remained so until the Fellowship of the Ring came there thousands of years later.
Gríma Wormtongue (died Third Age November 3, 3019) was the chief advisor to King Théoden of Rohan. He was the son of Gálmód.

History
Gríma was the advisor of Theoden, King of Rohan in the Third Age. Gríma was secretly in thrall to Saruman, who had promised him Éowyn. Gríma not only informed Saruman about the secrets of Rohan, but also worked to weaken Théoden and his kingdom with his words and poison.

During the War of the Ring, the Nine Nazgûl came to Rohan and questioned Wormtongue, who, terrified, answered that the Wizard Gandalf had passed through Rohan, and also revealed to them where the Shire was. He also told them that Saruman had lied to them in order to deny them this information, revealing his treachery against Sauron.

Upon Gandalf's arrival, Gríma tried to discredit him, until the wizard managed to heal Théoden. After this, "many things which men had missed" were found locked in Gríma's trunk and he was given a grim choice: ride into battle or into exile. Choosing the latter, he went to dwell with Saruman at Orthanc, where he witnessed the Battle of Isengard. Following the confrontation between Saruman and Gandalf, he mistakenly threw a "heavy rock"&mdash;which was actually the palantír of Orthanc&mdash;at the Rohirrim accompanying Gandalf, an act for which Saruman seems to have punished him severely.

While being held in Orthanc, Gríma became weak and thin. When Treebeard released him and Saruman in August, they left and headed west. On their way, they were confronted by Gandalf, Celeborn, Galadriel and the Hobbits on their way to northern Dunland. They found them as travelling beggars and Saruman kicked Gríma to move on, as he exclaimed how he hated his master. Galadriel told Gríma that he was free to leave him but he did not reply.

Saruman had already been exerting his control over the Shire from afar by sending evil Men there, thus Saruman sought his revenge in petty tyranny over the Hobbits. During this time Gríma became increasingly degraded until he was a crawling wretch, almost resembling Gollum, and Saruman shortened his nickname to "Worm". During this time he killed Lotho Sackville-Baggins, and may have eaten him.

Spurred by the words of Frodo that he did not have to follow Saruman, and being pushed over the edge when Saruman scorned him, he used a hidden knife to slit the throat of Saruman and darted down the road. He was quickly killed by several Hobbit arrows, and thus Wormtongue was the final casualty of the War of the Ring.

Etymology
The name Gríma derives from the Old English or Icelandic word meaning "mask, visor, helmet" or "spectre". was the chief advisor to King Théoden of Rohan. He was the son of Gálmód.

History
Gríma was the advidor of Theoden, King of Rohan in the Third Age.

On 13 April, when Gandalf revealed to Frodo that Bilbo's ring is Sauron's One Ring, they noticed Sam eavesdropping. Initially suspected as a spy, Sam feigned innocent curiosity. As "punishment", Sam was made Frodo's first companion on his journey to Bree and Rivendell. Sam and Pippin Took followed Frodo to his new house at Crickhollow where his and the Conspirators' role was revealed. Merry joined the travelers on their way to Bree. They passed through the Old Forest, the Barrow-downs and the Prancing Pony at Bree where they were joined by "Strider". Sauron's spies had opened the stables of the inn and all the mounts went loose, therefore before leaving the village, the company purchased a pony from Bill Ferny. Sam loved and tended the animal, and named him Bill, after his owner.

When they reached Rivendell, Sam was beside Frodo's bed while he was recovering from the Morgul-wound he was inflicted on Weathertop. Sam also was caught eavesdropping on the Council of Elrond and insisted that he accompany Frodo on his quest to destroy the Ring.

In Lothlórien, Galadriel gave Sam a box containing earth from her orchard.

After the Breaking of the Fellowship, Sam was the only member of the Fellowship to remain with Frodo.
When Gollum joined up with them, Sam remained distrustful of his loyalty to Frodo, and treated him with disdain, and partially (though unintentionally) pushed Gollum to betray Frodo in Shelob's Lair.

After Shelob attacked and seemingly killed Frodo, Sam took the Ring, intending to complete the quest, but upon learning that Frodo still lived, he rescued him from the Tower of Cirith Ungol and returned the Ring to him. Because he held the Ring for a time, he is considered one of the Ring-bearers.

Together, Sam and Frodo crossed Mordor to Mount Doom. Sam himself carrying Frodo up the slope for part of the way. After the destruction of the Ring, both Sam and Frodo were honored by King Elessar for their deeds.

After the War of the Ring, and the Scouring of the Shire, Sam planted saplings in all the places where specially beautiful and beloved trees had been destroyed, and he put a grain of Galadriel's soil at the root of each. He planted a silver nut in the Party Field where the Party Tree had once been, and the nut grew into a Mallorn tree.

He married Rose "Rosie" Cotton. In honor for restoring the Shire his family was given the name Gardner.

They had thirteen children: Elanor the Fair, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin, and Tolman. When Frodo sailed on the White Ship, at the end of the Third Age, Sam inherited Bag End and was entrusted the Red Book of Westmarch.

After Will Whitfoot resigned his post as Mayor of Michel Delving (the largest town in the Shire and the "unofficial capital"), in 6, Sam was elected Mayor of the Shire for seven consecutive 7-year terms.

After his wife died in 61, Sam entrusted the Red Book to Elanor and, according to her, he went to the Grey Havens to sail across the Sea and be reunited with Frodo in the Undying Lands.
Appearance
Sam has brown eyes. At some points his hands are mentioned as brown. If taken literally, he could be brown-skinned, as the Harfoots.
Etymology
Samwise means "simple minded" or "half-minded". Gamgee is a corruption of the name Gammidgy, a village in the Shire. Both names are presented as translations of the Westron form of Sam's name Banazîr Galbasi (also spelled Banazîr Galpsi) (q.v. for more information).

Tolkien's English translation, Samwís Gamwich, could have come to Samwise Gamgee in modern English.

The Sindarin version of Samwise is Perhael.

Inspiration
J.R.R. Tolkien took the name from Gamgee Tissue, a surgical dressing invented by a 19th century Birmingham surgeon called Joseph Sampson Gamgee. "Gamgee" became the colloquial name in Birmingham for cotton wool. Here, Tolkien describes why he had chosen that name for his character:

It is possible that Tolkien may have subconsciously recalled Dr. Gamgee (who died in 1886 but is commemorated by a plaque at the Birmingham Medical Institute, only yards from Tolkien's childhood home) but he claimed to be genuinely surprised when, in March 1956, he received a letter from one Sam Gamgee, who had heard that his name was in The Lord of the Rings but had not read the book. Tolkien replied on March 18:

He proceeded to send Mr Gamgee a signed copy of all three volumes of the book. However, the incident sparked a nagging worry in Tolkien's mind, as he recorded in his journal:

In other stories
In the illustrated short story Mr. Bliss, the local police officer is a Sergeant Boffin who - at the behest of Gaffer Gamgee - seeks to lock up Mr Bliss as a thief for failing to pay for his car. Sergeant Boffin also has a son named Sam.
:Samwise is first found in Rivendell, preparing for the departure. Later, he is found on Cerin Amroth in Lothlorien, alongside Frodo. The game's "Guardian" class ("Tank" in MMO terms) is based on Samwise due to the dedication he showed Frodo. This leads to an interesting occurrence: at some point each player gets to talk to a major character, who inspired his class. But while Legolas can teach a lot to a Hunter and Bilbo can show much to a Burglar, Sawmwise insists that he is no Guardian and not fit to be one - because his heroic deeds have not happened yet. The player has to double-check and discovers that whoever talked of Sam as a great Guardian, apparently had misheard the word "Gardener".

Commentary
Sam Gamgee is by many regarded as the "true hero" of Tolkien's story. Tolkien himself expressed this view in one of his letters: Sam is referred to as the "chief hero", and special emphasis is placed on Sam's "rustic love" for Rosie. The quest to destroy the Ring only succeeds because of Sam, who repeatedly saves Frodo from disaster (such as rescuing him at Cirith Ungol and carrying him up Mount Doom). He was one of only two Ring-bearers strong enough to surrender the Ring voluntarily.

The relationship between Frodo and Sam is, in many respects, at the center of The Lord of the Rings. To the modern reader, it seems archaic, as it is extremely class-oriented. Sam's humbleness and "plain speaking" is frequently emphasised in contrast to Frodo's "gentility", and he often shows deference to Frodo, calling him "Mister Frodo" or "Master". At the same time, a strong bond of love and trust grows between them, portrayed most poignantly during the events of Cirith Ungol, where Sam vows to return to his (apparently) dead master, to be reunited with Frodo in death.

Tolkienists regard Sam as Frodo's batman. In the British Army, a batman was an orderly who acted as the personal servant of an officer. It was a role with which Tolkien (who served as an Army officer in the First World War) would have been extremely familiar. Sam undertakes all of the typical roles of a batman &mdash; he runs errands for Frodo, he cooks, he transports him (or at least carries him), and he carries his luggage. Tolkien confirmed this interpretation when he wrote in a private letter that:

Compare to the relation between Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza, and the gradual "Quixotization" of Sancho.
In the second age, the Dwarves also had peace and friendship with the Elves of Eregion, also known as Hollin. When the reign of Sauron began, the Dwarves retreated into Khazad-dûm, avoiding the conflict and destruction of war. During this age, Khazad-dûm was renamed Moria.

In the third age, the Dwarves were driven from Moria by a Balrog known as Durin's Bane, who they had awoken by digging too deep into Mount Barazinbar. The treasures of Moria were taken by Orcs, and both Trolls, Orcs, and the Balrog walked among the endless shafts and corridors for many years to come. It was not until the arrival of the Fellowship of the Ring that the Balrog was killed by Gandalf and Moria was freed from its evil prescence.
