The '''Battle of Bywater''' was the last military engagement of the [[War of the Ring]], and the second battle to have been fought in [[the Shire]]

==Prelude==
When [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]] and his companions returned from the Coronation of [[Aragorn II|Elessar]], they found their homeland to be under the dominion of [[Ruffians]]. These Men had been pouring into the Shire since late [[Third Age 3018|3018]], and were under the command of "the Chief", or "[[Sharkey]]", who outlawed everything that the Hobbits held dear; food and [[:Category:Inns|inns]] most notably. It didn't take [[Meriadoc Brandybuck|Merry]], [[Peregrin Took|Pippin]] and [[Samwise Gamgee|Sam]] long to violate several rules:
<blockquote>''You're arrested for Gate-breaking, and Tearin up of Rules, and Assaulting Gatekeepers, and Tresspassing, and Sleeping in Shire-buildings without Leave, and Bribing Guards with Food.''[[#References|1]]</blockquote>

The four Hobbits were arrested, but managed to talk themselves out of custody, and subsequently rally the Hobbits to overthrow the Chief. A small group of Men was encountered, and Pippin declared the return of the King to them, and the message that emissaries were on their way. When he was scoffed, he declared himself the emissary, as he wasn't released from Elessar's service yet. The group was routed, but managed to get a message to a bigger contigent in [[Waymeet]].

==Battle==
As 20 Men from [[Hobbiton]] marched towards Bywater, 200 Bucklanders answered the call of Captain Merry's horn. In Bywater, barricades were set up at the command of Merry. Meanwhile, the Cottons also joined the group.

When the Men came, they did not expect a trap. They walked up [[Bywater Road]], to the point where [[Tolman Cotton Senior|Farmer Cotton]] was standing. They threatened him, but found themselves heavily outnumbered, and as the hobbits closed the barricade behind them, also surrounded. Their leader fell by arrows as he tried to strike at Merry. The rest surrendered.

The larger group of Men from Waymeet arrived the following day. In the meantime, Pippin had set up a rebellion in [[Tookland]], and returned with one hundred Tooks. Merry set up a defensive pocket on a heavily banked part of the Bywater Road. The Men walked straight into the pocket. Some surrendered, some escaped, and about twenty broke out. Six men and two hobbits were killed. The others now became desperate, and didn't care about escaping, only killing. The banks proved too steep to climb, and many fell before Hobbit axes. Merry and Pippin charged from the eastern bank, and Merry killed the leader.

==Aftermath==
In the end, nearly 70 Men were killed and 12 were taken prisoner, while 19 Hobbits died and about 30 were wounded. The dead Men were buried in a nearby sand-pit that came to be called the Battle Pit. The Hobbits were buried separately, and a stone was placed on their grave with a garden around it. A Roll was made of the names of all the Hobbits who fought in the Battle of Bywater, with Captains Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took listed at the top.

After the victory at Bywater, the Hobbits marched on to [[Bag End]], where they found Sharkey.
It was not [[Lotho Sackville-Baggins|Lotho]] as had been thought, but rather [[Saruman]]. Saruman was ordered away by Frodo, and Saruman revealed that his servant [[Gríma Wormtongue|Gríma]] killed Lotho. Gríma cut Saruman's throat in a rage for years of oppression and abuse, but was himself shot by Hobbit archers. As the spirit of Saruman rose from its bodily form, it was blown away by a wind from the West; [[Manwë]] did not want him back.

The following year, preparations were made to restore the damage done by Saruman. Sam spread the blessed soil from [[Sam's garden box|the box of Galadriel]], and planted the [[mallorn]]-seed where once the [[The Party Tree]] had stood. 1420, by Shire Reckoning, became one of the best harvest years ever.

==Portrayal in adaptations==
Due to the anti-climactic nature of the battle, both the [[Rankin/Bass' The Return of the King|Rankin/Bass]] and the [[Peter Jackson's The Return of the King|Peter Jackson]] movies left out the Battle of Bywater.

[[Category:Hobbits]][[Category:Bolger]]
[[Fredegar Bolger]] was one of the [[Conspirators]], a small group of [[Hobbits]] who knew that [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]] had the [[One Ring|Ring]]. Fatty was a descendant of [[Hildibrand Took]] ([[Third Age|T.A.]] 2849&ndash;2934), one of the many sons of the [[Took Family#Famous Tooks|Old Took]]. He was the son of [[Odovacar Bolger]] and [[Rosamunda Took]]. Fatty was born in 2980 and his family was from Budgeford in Bridgefiels of the Eastfarthing. He also had a younger sister, '''[[Estella Bolger]]''' (2985&ndash;?), who married [[Meriadoc Brandybuck]].

The Original plan of the Conspiriors was that when [[Frodo Baggins]], [[Samwise Gamgee|Sam]], [[Meriadoc Brandybuck|Merry]] and [[Peregrin I Took|Pippin]] left Frodo's new home in Crickhollow, Fredegar (who had never left the Shire) was to stay behind to deal with any "inquisitive folk" and to keep up the pretense that Frodo was still living there by wearing Frodo's clothes and keeping about the place. After learning the identity of the Black Riders, Fatty was invited to flee with the others into the [[Old Forest]]. He claimed to be too terrified of the stories of the Forest and instead voluntarily remained behind as a decoy for the Nazgul and to tell the absent Gandalf of events should he ever show up. Though Merry tried to persuade Fatty that the Old Forest would be nothing compared to meeting the Ringwraiths, Fatty was adamant, so the other Hobbits went into the Forest.

The Ringwraiths did eventually come in the night to Crickhollow for Frodo and the Ring, but Fatty, though frightened nearly witless, escaped to raise the alarm of Buckland. This caused the Nazgul to flee, but they had learned that the Ring was gone.

During [[Saruman]]'s rule of [[the Shire]], Fatty led a group of partisans fighting against the Ruffians around the hills of Scary before eventually being captured. He was imprisoned in the Lockholes and starved, (and could no longer be called "Fatty") but rescued in the Scouring of the Shire.

In earlier drafts of The ''Lord of the Rings'', Fatty Bolger played a much larger role, but this was later abandoned. His role survives as a minor anomaly in the book &mdash; before the Hobbits go into the [[Old Forest]], they have five ponies prepared &mdash; but only take four. Bolger was originally supposed to go with them.
== Title changes, language questions ==

I've read WP's article on editing, but it says nothing on changing the title. How do you change the title? I mean, I saw [[Long Horn Cotton]], I've checked the genealogies, and it's Long Hom. Some of the language headings are incorrect too - especially the [[:Category:Adûnaic_words|Adûnaic]] ones. And do we need a clearer entry on [[:Category:Rohirric_words|Rohirric]], because this is Old English and Rohirian (the word Tolkien used for it) mixed together... [[User:Ederchil|Ederchil]] 07:13, 13 January 2008 (EST)

:Hello there Ederchil, first I wanted to thank you for your recent edits, it is always nice to have a new face around and you've been doing a great job. There should be a move button next to History and you can move the article to the correct title, I've gone ahead and fixed the Long Hom Cotton article. We usually try and bring up the move on the talk page before moving, but for obvious spelling mistakes such as that one it is okay to just move it without asking.
:One thing I always forget as well, when we want to link to Categories we have to add a colon in front, like <nowiki>[[:Category:Rohirric words|Rohirric]]</nowiki>, otherwise it doesn't display the text and just adds the article to said category.
:I agree with both of your statements on Adûnaic and Rohirric words, if you can try to cite your sources that would be great and we can eliminate any errors. Thanks for your input and let me know if I can help with anything at all. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 14:18, 13 January 2008 (EST)
== Ugluk fanfiction ==

Hyar: i'm sorry to accuse you like this but a friend of mine noticed what appears to be some extreme extrepolation in the [[Ugluk]] article. I had a check through the history and noticed that it all changed to that status with your rewrite. Now i know i dont know everything about the texts but what are your sources for Ugluk's company meeting Gollum, along with a preliminary meeting with grishnakh and specific information on how Ugluk's company came about? It's certainly not anywhere in the actual book Lord of the Rings. [[User:Dr Death|Dr Death]] 13:48, 17 January 2008 (EST)

:Don't be sorry! The sooner we cite everything in the articles the better. At the bottom I listed the other reference (aside from ''[[The Two Towers]]'') as "[[The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion]], "The Departure of Boromir,", "The Uruk-hai", this is indeed where the content you brought up came from. I'd definitely recommend this book if you don't have it already. It looks like [[Wayne G. Hammond|Hammond]] and [[Christina Scull|Scull]] found this information in a "Scheme" manuscript which is an unpublished timeline of events. I know little of this manuscript so I'll do some research on it, however I have the utmost respect for Hammond and Scull. I've been holding off on citations since hopefully by the end of the month, next month at the latest, we should be running on an upgraded version of MediaWiki which will allow us to install the same citation extension which Wikipedia uses. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 14:05, 17 January 2008 (EST)

:: Fair enoughski, however the question does arise: 'is it canon?' I think given the confusion that has arisen, it might be worth including a sort of 'other versions of the legendarium' or 'greater works' section in which that information is included and independently assessed since i dont think a footnote will suffice for what the casual reader (and even the dedicated reader: i really was miffed by it) might at first think to be a factual error. == Questions on proper form (besides proper comma usage) ==

Articles before proper names of Ages; should it be "in Second Age Numenor was really neat," or more like "in the Third Age the Hobbits were smoking?" It's given that particular dates within any certain age do not need a definite article (in F.A. 42 the elves all sailed the ocean blue) but I'm not sure which way I should format the other. Also, is there any way to flag articles that are in the process of major rewrites so that we are not doubling efforts? Lastly, if I just happened to be a great gift giver, would you and eight of your friends each want to recieve a nice piece of jewelry? The '''Squint-eyed Southerner''' was an outlaw driven from [[Dunland]] whose name was not known, he served as an agent of [[Saruman]], one of Saruman's most trusted in fact ([[Unfinished Tales|U.T.]]). It was rumored there was Orc-blood within him ([[Unfinished Tales|U.T.]]), this may have been due to the cross-breeding experiments which Saruman was conducting.

==Description==
{{quote|Just what my father meant to convey by the 'squint-eyed Southerner' at Bree I'm not sure. I don't think that he can possibly have meant that the man had 'slit-eyes' (goblin-like). He may have meant that he actually had a squint (optical disorder), but that seems unnecessarily particular. So the likeliest meaning, I think, is that the man didn't look straight, but obliquely, watchfully, sideways, suggesting craftiness and crookedness.|'The "Squint-eyed Southerner"', [[Beyond Bree]], May [[1990]], p. 9}}

==History==
The Southerner at one point was stationed on the borders of [[the Shire]] to negotiate the purchase of "[[leaf]]" and other supplies which Saruman was storing in preparation for the war. Saruman had ordered the man to infiltrate the Shire and learn of any [[hobbits]] who had departed recently in hopes of finding out who possessed [[the One Ring]]. The Southerner was "well supplied with maps, lists of names, and notes concerning the Shire." ([[Unfinished Tales|U.T.]])

In September of [[Third Age 3018|3018]], the Dunlending was traveling back to the Shire when the [[Black Riders]] came upon him at the [[Tharbad]] crossing. When questioned, the Southerner told the Witch-king everything, betraying Saruman, which made the Witch-king realize Saruman was not a true ally. The Witch-king was made aware of the name [[Baggins]] and [[Hobbiton]] was singled out for immediate visit and inquiry.

The Witch-king put the [[Shadow of Fear]] on the Dunlending and sent him to [[Bree]] to listen for information of Baggins. The Southerner met up with [[Bill Ferny]] and at the [[Prancing Pony]] on September 29th, the two of them saw [[Frodo Baggins]] vanish into thin air. After reporting the information to the [[Nazgûl]], the [[Ringwraiths]] came to attack that night.

Aragorn kept the hobbits safe through the night and the next morning the Squint-eyed Southerner was spotted inside Bill Ferny's house when the company set out to [[Weathertop]].

Nothing else is recorded of the Squint-eyed Southerner, however in [[Third Age 3019|3019]], many of Saruman's agents occupied the Shire and oppressed the Hobbits. It is possible the Southerner was among them as many of the Men resembled him. The Men were driven out of the Shire in the [[Battle of Bywater]] on November 3rd.
'''Hobbits''' were a small race that typically dwelt underground, believed to be related to [[Men]]. They played little role in history, save during the [[War of the Ring]].

==Description==

Hobbits are, or were, between two to four feet tall, the average height being 3 feet 6 inches, with slightly pointed ears and oversized furry feet with leathery soles, resulting in most never wearing shoes. They are fond of an unadventurous bucolic life of farming, eating, and socializing. Living rather longer than humans, Hobbits live an average of about 100 years; their oldest living up 130. The time at which a young Hobbit "comes of age" is 33, as compared to the human 21 years. Thus a 70 year old Hobbit would only be middle-aged. Hobbits also like to drink ale in inns, not unlike the English countryfolk, who were Tolkien's inspiration. We can also see that in the name Tolkien chose for the part of [[Middle-earth]] where the Hobbits live: "[[The Shire]]" is clearly reminiscent of the English county names (e.g., Lancashire, Shropshire).

(Mealtimes, at least according to the [[Peter Jackson]] script adaptation of the novel, consist at least of the seven meals known as breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper. Tolkien did say that Hobbits eat "at least six meals a day when they can get it", but he didn't give their names.)

==Origin==
Hobbits are evidently related to [[Men]], and are represented as a pygmy offshoot of that race. Their exact origin is unknown, but by the early [[Third Age]] they were living in the Vales of [[Anduin]] in [[Wilderland]].

== Etymology ==

Hobbits are also called ''[[Halflings]]'' (in [[Sindarin]], ''perian'' singular and ''periannath'' collective) due to their small stature. However, the term is slightly offensive to Hobbits, as to themselves they are not 'half' of anything, and certainly do not use the term to refer to themselves. Tolkien's etymology for 'Hobbit' is interesting as well: obviously constructed without prior intent, it would have been natural for him to connect it to the German prefix ''hob'' meaning ''small'' (e.g. ''hobgoblin''). However this prefix dates back "only" to the 13th century, too late by Tolkien's standards, and so he constructed an alternative etymology, from [[Old English]] ''hol-bytla'', "hole-dweller".
When later he began to work out the language relations further, ''Hobbit'' was to be derived from the [[Rohirric]] (actually [[Anglo-Saxon]] - which Rohirric parallels in Tolkien's universe) ''Holbytlan'' (hole builders). In the original [[Westron]], the name was ''Kuduk'' (Hobbit), derived from the actual Rohirric ''kûd-dûkan'' (hole dweller).

According to Tolkien, the word ''hobbit'' was the first element of ''[[The Hobbit]]'' that he created. As a university lecturer, he was in the process of correcting reports when he started scribbling on a piece of paper and wrote, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit", and the multitude of stories sprang from that. The idea of a little hole dwelling creature was introduced to Tolkien by one of his students in a story he had written.

==Some well-known Hobbits==
* [[Bilbo Baggins]]
* [[Frodo Baggins]]
* [[Samwise Gamgee|Samwise "Sam" Gamgee]]
* [[Meriadoc Brandybuck|Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck]]
* [[Peregrin Took|Peregrin "Pippin" Took]]
* [[Fredegar Bolger|Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger]]
* [[Otho Sackville-Baggins|Otho]] and [[Lotho Sackville-Baggins]]
* [[Old Took]]
* [[Bullroarer|Bullroarer Took]]
* [[Sméagol]] (who became the creature [[Gollum]])
* [[Déagol]]

Though in [[The Hobbit]] it is mentioned that [[Gandalf]] "was responsible for so many quiet lads and lasses going off into the Blue for mad adventures," no female Hobbits are depicted in [[J.R.R. Tolkien|Tolkien]]'s stories doing so; however Hobbit women do appear in his works, such as the formidable [[Lobelia Sackville-Baggins]] and Sam's wife [[Rosie Cotton]].

==History==
Historically, the Hobbits are known to have originated in the Valley of [[Anduin]], between [[Mirkwood]] and the [[Misty Mountains]]. According to [[The Lord of the Rings]], they have lost the genealogical details of how they are related to the rest of humankind. At this time, there were three '''Hobbit-kinds''', with different temperaments. The [[Harfoots]], the most numerous, were almost identical to the Hobbits as they are described in ''The Lord of the Rings''. The [[Stoors]] had an affinity for water, boats and swimming; the [[Fallohides]] were an adventurous people. (Both of these traits were much rarer in later days.) While situated in the Valley of the Anduin River the Hobbits lived close by the [[Eotheod]], the ancestors of the [[Rohirrim]], and this led to some contact between the two. As a result many old words and names in "Hobbitish" are derivatives of words in Rohirric, so much so that even someone without linguistic training could make out the relation (Merry would later write an entire book devoted to the relationship, ''Old Place Names in the Shire'').

Some time near the beginning of the [[Third Age]], they undertook, for reasons unknown, but possibly having to do with [[Mordor]]'s power, the arduous task of crossing the [[Misty Mountains]]. Some of the Stoors, however, stayed behind, and it is from these people that [[Gollum]] would come many years later. The Hobbits took different routes in their journey westward, but eventually came to a land between the River [[Baranduin]] (which they renamed ''Brandywine'') and the Weather Hills. There they founded many settlements, and the divisions between the Hobbit-kinds began to blur.

Around the year 1600 of the Third Age, two Fallohide brothers decided, again for reasons unknown, to cross the River Brandywine and settle on the other side. Large numbers of Hobbits followed them, and most of their former territory was depopulated. Only [[Bree]] and a few surrounding villages lasted to the end of the Third Age. The new land that they found on the west bank of the Brandywine is called [[The Shire]].

A map of the Shire and surrounding regions may be found at [[Eriador]].

Originally the Hobbits of the Shire swore nominal allegiance to the last Kings of Arnor, being required only to acknowledge their lordship, speed their messengers, and keep the bridges and roads in repair. During the final fight against [[Angmar]] at the Battle of Fornost, the Hobbits maintain that they sent a company of archers to help but this is nowhere else recorded. After the battle the kingdom of Arnor was destroyed, and in absence of the king the Hobbits elected a Thain of the Shire from among their own chieftans.

The first Thain of the Shire was Bucca of the Marrish, who founded the Oldbuck family. However, later on the Oldbuck family crossed the Brandywine River to create the separate land of Buckland and the family name changed to the familiar "Brandybuck". Their patriach then became Master of Buckland. With the departure of the Oldbucks/Brandybucks, a new family was selected to have its chieftans be Thain, the Took family (Indeed, Pippin Took was son of the Thain and would later become Thain himself). The Thain was in charge of Shire Moot and Muster and the [[Hobbitry-in-Arms]], but as the Hobbits of the Shire led entirely peaceful, uneventful lives the office of Thain was seen as something more of a formality.

==The ontological nature of hobbits==
[[Hobbits]] are considered Men in Tolkien's works. Nearly all Tolkien scholars agree that Men are closely related to [[Hobbits]], far more closely than Men are to either [[Elf|Elves]] or [[Dwarves]]. It is thus commonly assumed that Hobbits are among the Younger Children of [[Eru|Iluvatar]] and are the result of the same act of creation as Men. This would imply that Hobbits have the [[Gift of Men]] to pass entirely beyond [[Arda]], which also means that the avoidance of the Gift of Men in Hobbits, like in Men, can be physically and morally destructive. [[Sméagol]], who had originally been a Hobbit, was transformed into the monster [[Gollum]] by a combination of the evil of the [[One Ring]] and the resulting avoidance of the [[Gift of Men]]. [[Bilbo Baggins]] became "thin and stretched" from the immortality that the One Ring granted to him, since neither Men nor Hobbits are intended for immortality in this world. Men and Hobbits appear to have the same ontological nature, which is that they are the result of the act of creation that resulted in the Younger Children of [[Eru|Iluvatar]].

== Usage outside Tolkien ==

"Hobbit" is a trademark owned by the Tolkien estate, as are most of the names, places and artifacts included in books by [[J.R.R. Tolkien]]. For this reason [[Dungeons & Dragons]] and other fantasy tend to refer to Hobbits and Hobbit-like races rather as '''Halflings''' (''hin'' in the Mystara universe, ''hurthlings'' in Ancient Domains of Mystery).

The name ''hobbit'' had previously appeared in an obscure "list of spirits" by Michael Denham, which includes several repetitions. There is no evidence to suggest Tolkien used this as a source &mdash; indeed he spent many years trying to find out whether he really did coin the word. Denham's "hobbit spirits" (which are never referenced anywhere except in the long list) have no obvious relation to Tolkien's Hobbits, other than the name (which may possibly imply hob- "small", see below): Tolkien's Hobbits are small humans, not spirits. Nonetheless, some few people have suggested that the reference in the Denham list should invalidate the trademark.

The lexeme ''hob'', meaning ''small'', is a root word for ''hobbledehoy'', ''hobgoblin'', and ''hobyah''. This may have influenced Tolkien's name; see '''[[#Origin|Origin]]''' above.

''Homo floresiensis'', an extinct species of humans discovered in 2004, has been informally dubbed a "hobbit" by its discoverers.

The Original plan of the Conspiriors was that when [[Frodo Baggins]], [[Samwise Gamgee|Sam]], [[Meriadoc Brandybuck|Merry]] and [[Peregrin I Took|Pippin]] left the Frodo's new home in Crckhollow, Fredegar (who had never left the Shire) was to stay behind to deal with any "inquisitive folk" and to keep up the pretense that Frodo was still living there by wearing Frodo's clothes and keeping about the place. After learning the identy of the Black Riders, Fatty was invited to flee with the others into the [[Old Forest]].

'''Lotho Sackville-Baggins''' ([[Third Age|T.A.]] 2964 - 3019, died aged 55) was the only child of [[Otho Sackville-Baggins|Otho]] and [[Lobelia Sackville-Baggins|Lobelia]] [[Sackville-Baggins]].

Lotho was an unpopular hobbit, he was widely known by the mocking name '''''Pimple''''', due to his complexion. When his father, Otho, died in [[Shire Reckoning|S.R.]] 1412, Lotho inherited [[pipe-weed]] plantations in the [[Southfarthing]], selling the pipe-weed to people away south.

After [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]] sold [[Bag End]] to Lobelia in September 3018 and left the [[Shire]], Lotho continued to sell pipe-weed to the [[Wizard]] [[Saruman]], becoming richer and more powerful, and using the proceeds to buy land and property all over the Shire in order to control it.

[[Men]] ("[[ruffians]]") from [[Isengard]] began coming into the Shire to help Lotho control and supress the people. With their help, he desposed of the rightful [[Mayor of the Shire]], [[Will Whitfoot]], and imprisoned him in the "[[Lockholes]]," naming himself Chief [[Shirriffs|Shirriff]], or simply '''[[Chief]]'''.

Lotho continued ordering, industrialising and controlling the Shire's life until Saruman (called "[[Sharkey]]") arrived in the Shire, in September 3019, and took over direct power. Lotho was held prisoner in Bag End for a short while until [[Gríma Wormtongue]] killed him in his sleep (or possibly ate him). Thus, the hobbit who tried to take over the Shire, met a very untimely end.
Bungo, a well-to-do [[hobbit]], married into the [[Took Family|Took]] clan when he wed [[Belladonna Took]], daughter of the [[Old Took]], in 1280. Bungo and Belladonna had only one child together, the infamous '''[[Bilbo Baggins]]'''.
The '''''Mahûd''''' was shown in [[Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings]]. The title and description itself was invented for the ''[[Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game]]'' to describe the trainers and riders of the [[Mûmakil]]. It has obvious connections with the real world name for elephant riders- Mahout. See the quote below.

{{quote|The Mûmakil are not native of the arid land of Harad, but come from the savannahs even further afield. The Men that live there, a mysterious and fierce race of deadly hunters known in Harad as 'the Mahûd', were the first to tame the Mûmakil. The tribal leaders of the Mahûd can develop such a strong empathy with these animals that they are said to even be able to talk to them. For this reason, the wealthiest Haradrim leaders go to great length to hire the services of a Mahûd Chieftain to command their Mûmak into battle.|[http://us.games-workshop.com/games/lotr/catalog/default.htm Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game]}}
'''Sharku''' (late [[Third Age]]) was an [[Orc]] invented by [[Peter Jackson]] for his ''[[Peter Jackson's The Two Towers|The Two Towers]]'' film adaptation. In the movie, Sharku is one of the [[Wargs|Warg]]-riders who ambush the column of [[Rohirrim]] woman and children retreating from [[Edoras]] to the safety of [[Helm's Deep]]. King [[Theoden]] and his guard, with the help of [[Aragorn II|Aragorn]], [[Legolas of Mirkwood|Legolas]], and [[Gimli]], fend off the attack. However, during the battle Aragorn gets tangled in the harness of Sharku's Warg and both the beast and the ranger fall off a cliff. Sharku, mortally wounded, survives just long enough to gloat about Aragorn's (supposed) death to Legolas and Gimli.

The Warg-rider ambush did not happen in the original book. The character of Sharku was played by [[Jed Brophy]].
He does not appear anywhere but in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II and it's sequel, [[The Battle for Middle-earth II - The Rise of the Witch-king]]. Drogoth has a variety of powers, and is considered by many to be one of the most powerful characters in the game.

[[Image:Angelo Montanini - Dunlendings.jpg|thumb|''Dunlendings'' by [[Angelo Montanini]]]]
'''Dunlendings''' were the ferocious, stunted and vicious [[men]] that lived in [[Dunland]], close to [[Rohan]]. Also called the ''Wild Men of Dunland'', they have long been enemies of the [[Rohirrim]], although this hate is relatively baseless&mdash;it was the [[Númenóreans]] who had ruled them harshly in the past.

The Dunlendings were employed by the [[wizard]] [[Saruman]] to attack and raid the cities and settlements of Rohan. Since [[Gríma Wormtongue]] had corrupted the mind of King [[Theoden]], the Rohirrim were absent for the most part, and the farm boys and old men who picked up rusty swords proved to be little contest to the ferocious Dunlendings.

Wild Men were also present at the [[Battle of the Hornburg]] ([[Battle of Helm's Deep]]), as well as an odd breed of [[Half-orcs]], derived from [[Orcs]] and the [[Men]] of Dunland. They fought viciously against their old enemy, but when [[Gandalf]] stormed down the hill with a thousand Rohirrim at his back and his staff shining piercing light into the eyes of the Dunlendings, they dropped their weapons and surrendured. This proved to be a wise decision, as the Orcs who fled were killed by a massive forest of [[Huorns]] that blocked the entrance to the valley.

After Saruman's downfall, the Dunlendings retreated back into their homeland and did not trouble the people of Rohan. When the wizard Saruman attempted to take over [[the Shire]], there were a number of Dunlendings with him. However, they were slain or driven away by [[Hobbits]], and when Saruman died at the hands of his own servant, Sauron, the basis of all evil, had fallen, and King Elessar took the throne of Gondor, the Dunlendings agreed never to trouble the free peoples of [[Middle-earth]] again, and their old and evil power was finally broken.
