'''Trolls''' are very large (around 9 feet tall) humanoids of poor intellect. They were bred "in mockery" of [[Ents]].

In ''[[The Hobbit]]'' they speak with thick Cockney accents. They turn to stone when exposed to sunlight and they enjoy eating [[Hobbits]] and [[Dwarves]]. While threatening, the trolls in ''The Hobbit'' serve as a comic element.

[[Morgoth]] created Trolls before the [[First Age]]. Trolls were very strong, but they turned to stone in sun light. Many Trolls died in the [[War of Wrath]], but some survived and joined the forces of [[Sauron]], the greatest surviving servant of Morgoth. In the [[Second Age]] and [[Third Age]], Trolls were among Sauron's most dangerous warriors. In the Third Age, Sauron created the ''[[Olog-hai]]'', which were more powerful than earlier breeds of Trolls. While most Trolls cannot bear exposure to sunlight without turning to stone, the Olog-hai apparently could; this attribute is mentioned in [[the Return of the King]] as making them particularly dangerous. During the [[War of the Ring]], Sauron used Olog-hai in the [[Siege of Gondor]] and [[Battle of the Pelennor Fields]]. In the subsequent Battle at the Black Gate, the hobbit [[Peregrin Took]] killed a large Olog-hai troll. As a result of Sauron's ring being destroyed, [[Black Gate]] and the rest of [[Mordor]] collapsed to ruin during that battle. Most of the Trolls present at the battle were killed, with a very few escaping.

In ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'', several breeds are mentioned:

* [[Cave-trolls]] seem incapable of speech and it is not clear whether they can move in sunlight.
* Normal Trolls were strong and vicious, but stupid creatures created by Morgoth. Nobody knows how he managed to breed them though it is stated by [[Treebeard|Treebeard]] of the [[Ents]] that Trolls were "made in mockery of" [[Ents]], similar to the way that [[Orcs]] were bred from captured and tormented [[Elves]]. Tolkien did not discuss in detail the ways in which "good" beings could be corrupted to evil.
* [[Snow Trolls]] as well as Hill Trolls are mentioned, but it is not known how they are related to others, and their abilities.
* The [[Olog-hai]], unlike the original Trolls, seem incapable of speech (though it's said they know [[Black Speech]] and are able to move while exposed to direct sunlight. Apparently [[Sauron]] created them.
*The Stone-Trolls were a race of trolls in the service of sauron. See [[Stone-trolls]]

While in Norse mythology, the Troll was a magical creature with special skills, and are so accepted to this day in Norway, in Tolkien's writings they are portrayed as evil, with crude, bloodthirsty habits.
Also for the first instance of every term in an article that should have an article associated with it, we try to link to it. You can do this by just putting brackets around the word, like <nowiki>[[Arda]]</nowiki> or if you want to link to one page but display different text you can type <nowiki>[[Arda|the world]]</nowiki> Hope that helps, and thanks again! --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 20:37, 23 March 2007 (EDT)

It was home to a dwarf mining community, and in the [[Battle of Five Armies]], [[Dáin II Ironfoot]] sent reinforcements to Thorin from here. The Iron Hills were the last remains of the [[Iron Mountains]] where [[Morgoth]] dwelt. They were founded by [[Grór]] son of [[Dáin I]], after the Dwarves were exiled from the [[Grey Mountains]]. The Iron Hills were colonized by Dwarves around the year 2500 of the [[Third Age]]. The [[Longbeard]] Dwarves lived here.
The '''Iron Hills''' was the main dwelling of Durin' folk in the East, and was also the strongest kingdom in [[Wilderland]] before the death of [[Smaug]]
It was bragged that nothing grew on said poisoned land, but the "Red Book of Westmarch" says that there were some plants that did grow there. In sheltered places twisted tree-forms and stunted grey grasses grew. The leaves were shrivelled with Sulphur vapour and maggot hatchlings. Nowhere in Middle-Earth did brambles ever grow so large and fierce. These Brambles of Mordor were ugly with foot-long thorns, which were barbed and sharp as the knives of the orcs that came from Mordor. They sprawled over the land like coils of steel wire. They were truly the flowers of Mordor, for thy represented Mordor exaclty; cruel, fierce, and disgusting.

'''The Last Alliance of Elves and Men''' was formed in 3430 of the [[Second Age]] (S.A.) in response to the threat of conquest by the Dark Lord [[Sauron]].

Sauron had been contending with the [[Elves]] for mastery of Middle-earth for over 1200 years. Fearing the establishment of the powerful kingdoms in exile — [[Arnor]] and [[Gondor]] — by his hated enemies, the [[Dúnedain]], Sauron launched a preemptive attack on Gondor in S.A. 3429.

In response, [[Elendil]], High King of the Dúnedain, formed an alliance with [[Gil-galad]], the High King of the [[Eldar]], to repel Sauron's assault. [[Durin's folk]], under command of King [[Durin IV]], also aided Elendil and Gil-galad by sending a host of Dwarves from Three of the Seven Houses of Dwarves.

The three kingdoms assembled their armies in Arnor and marched on Sauron's forces. In S.A. 3434 they defeated Sauron's army in the [[Battle of Dagorlad]], breeched the [[Morannon]] into [[Mordor]], and besieged the Dark Lord's fortress of [[Barad-dûr]]. The siege lasted for seven years, during which [[Anárion]], Elendil's son, was slain. It culminated in Sauron leaving his fortress and engaging in direct combat. There were three objectives to this war: to unmake the ring, to destroy sauron, and to remove the foundation of the dark tower.

Sauron was felled by Gil-galad and Elendil, who both perished in the assault themselves. Elendil broke his sword [[Narsil]] as he fell. Using the hilt-shard of the sword, Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's finger. Bereft of the power of the One Ring, Sauron's spirit dissipated and would not take form again in Middle-earth for a thousand years.

With the victory over Sauron, and the death of Gil-galad and Elendil, the Last Alliance was dissolved. Durin IV survived the war and afterwards returned to [[Khazad-dûm]], and the remaining Númenóreans resettled their kingdoms.
'''Trollshaws''' are the upland woods, consisting at least partly of beech trees, that lay to the west of [[Rivendell]] between the Rivers [[Hoarwell]] and [[Loudwater]]. They were the haunt of [[Trolls]], three of which famously waylaid [[Bilbo Baggins|Bilbo]] and his companions during the [[Quest of Erebor]].Years later, Frodo and his companions found them on the way to Rivendell, but the Trolls, from the distractions of Gandalf, ahd been turned to stone by the sun. On the hills of the trollshaws were shalow caves, and on the top of some of the hills there were castles and towers that had been built by the men of Rhudaur.

It seems there were few if any Trolls that lived in the shaws by the late [[Third Age]]. They were probably driven back into the [[Ettenmoors]] (which was Troll country) to the North, probably by the [[Dúnedain]] [[Rangers]] and the [[Elves of Rivendell]].
The Aelin Uial is the maze of lakes and fens formed where the river Aros met the sirion, before it fell beneath the Andram. These were Lands heavy with magical enchantment and spells, from two main sources; the Girdle of melian guarding Doriath to the North of the Aelin-Uial, and also from the power of Ulmo the Vala, which was very strong in this area and Sirions waters. it was here that Turgon and Finrod were given the idea of building their hidden strongholds at Gondolon and Nargothrond, which was an Idea put into their dreams by Ulmo. The Aelin-Uial was under the control of Doriath, a Sindarin Kingdom. Thingol's Marchwardens kept secret ferries among the reeds, wich they could use to cross in between Sirion's eastern and western banks unseen by anyone. at the southernmost end of the Aelin-Uial, the waters of Sirion came together once more from the many, many routes they took through the marshland and, at the place called the Falls of Sirion, fell lots of water in a waterfall down into the Earth. It was destroyed in the War of Wrath, which in turn occured at the end of the first age.
The Stone of Erech is also known as The Black Stone. It is the standing stone where the king of the mountains swore an oath to Isildur. It was large and spherical in shape, and half of it was underground. The other half that was visible/above ground was approximately as tall as a man. It was located on the hill of Erech.

The hill of Erech was located in Gondor, at the beginning of the Blackroot Vale in the white mountains. The head of the Blackroot Vale was where the entrance to the Paths of the Dead was located. The stone was brought to the hill of Erech by Isildur, who rescued it from the sinking Númenor.

In the very early days of Gondor, the king of the men who lived in the white mountains swore an oath of allegiance to Isildur on the Stone of Erech. This oath was betrayed when Isildur called upon them to fight Sauron in the War of the Last Alliance. That caused Isildur to curse them to remain undead until they had fulfilled their oath. They haunted the Paths of the Dead for 3000+ years.

It was on the Stone of Erech that Aragorn called on the King of the dead, and the other accursed, to fulfill their oaths so that they could rest in peace. This occurred at midnight. In the Books, they only helped Aragorn take over the Ships of Saurons allies from the south. They were finally put to rest by Aragorn for fulfilling their oath where they had not done so before.
