An atlas of 51 maps charting the journey that Frodo and his companions undertake in J.R.R.Tolkien’s epic work.

Based on clear and detailed descriptions given in the text and on the original maps that appear in The Lord of the Rings, as well as Tolkien’s own paintings and drawings of the landscape and features of Middle-earth, this book clearly shows Frodo’s route, together with the paths taken by other principal characters. The two-colour maps provide enough detail to help the reader envisage the country through which the narrative moves, and each one also has extensive notes about the journey.

Having loved the volumes of The Lord of the Rings since they first appeared, Barbara Strachey long wanted fuller and more detailed maps to go with them. Though not a professional cartographer or artist, she finally decided to create them herself. For nearly 20 years her efforts have provided readers of The Lord of the Rings with a new and more vivid idea of Middle-earth, and her book remains an essential companion to Tolkien’s great masterpiece.

== Errors and Discrepancies==
The ''Journeys of Frodo'' often contain fine details not shown on the large-scale maps attached to the three volumes of ''The Lord of the Rings''. In her foreword, Barbara Strachey stated that she based her atlas on "the very clear and detailed descriptions to be found in the text of ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]''." While also consulting ''[[The Hobbit]]'', ''[[Unfinished Tales]]'', and ''[[Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien]]'', as well as the maps in the books themselves, whenever she found differences between the text and the maps she followed "the written information".

* On Tolkien's maps of Middle-earth (in ''[[The Fellowship of the Ring]]'',<ref name="FRmap">{{FR|Map}}</ref> and the ''[[Unfinished Tales]]'',<ref>{{UT|Map}}</ref>), the [[East Road]] heads straight east from [[Bree]] past [[Weathertop]] (which is thus north of Bree's latitude), then makes a slight bend to the north before coming to the [[Last Bridge]]. On Strachey's Map 11, the East Road bends considerably to the south away from the [[Midgewater Marshes]] before turning north to Weathertop, which was still shown as lying south of the latitude of Bree.<ref>[[Barbara Strachey]], ''Journeys of Frodo'', Map 11</ref> Strachey based her loop on [[Aragorn]]'s comment, "That is Weathertop. The Old Road, which we have left far away on our right, runs to the south of it and passes not far from its foot." However, Aragorn and the hobbits spend two days marching north through the [[Chetwood]] before heading east. Their journey to the [[Weather Hills]] is always said to be east, not bending to the south as on Strachey's map. They reached the feet of the western slopes on the night of [[5 October]]. The next day they travel south on the path at the base of the hills and by midday reach Weathertop.<ref>{{FR|I11}}</ref> Thus Aragorn and the hobbits journeyed two days north from Bree, walked straight east for several days, then followed the path south for one day to Weathertop, which makes the hill north of Bree. Therefore Strachey's curving of the Road well to the south and the relocation of Weathertop appears to be unjustified.

Second, she stated that Aragorn said that the road ran along the Loudwater for many miles before the Ford. In ''[[The Return of the Shadow]]'', [[Christopher Tolkien]] directly addresses this issue. He notes her comment and observes that her map-change reduces the separation between the two rivers to 27 miles. However, he states that the distance was at times 45, 60, or 62 miles on his father's sketch maps and 75 miles on the published map. Her change would also eliminate the Angle. While he agrees that the Loudwater would be too far away to be seen, Christopher insists that the problem "cannot be resolved in this way".<ref name="Road">{{RS|1XIa}}</ref>

The letter was a response to the leader article of [[29 June]], where actions by the Forestry Commission had been described as giving forests a "Tolkien gloom".<ref>[[Wayne G. Hammond]] and [[Christina Scull]] (2006), ''[[The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide]]: Chronology'', p. 764</ref> The leader, entitled "Forestry and Us", contained the following passage which arouse a reaction from Tolkien: ''"Sheepwalks where you could once ramble for miles are transformed into a kind of Tolkien gloom, where no bird sings..."''.

Tolkien writes in the letter that he rejects the use of his name as an adjective to "gloom", and continues to explain the motives of his forests. [[Lothlórien]] was beautiful because the trees were loved. The [[Old Forest]] was hostile due to bad memories. [[Fangorn Forest]] was old and beautiful, but under attack by [[Saruman|a machine-loving enemy]]. [[Mirkwood]], though under the dominion of [[Necromancer|a Power]] that hated all living things, was restored to its beauty.

Furthermore, Tolkien calls comparing the Forestry Commission to [[Sauron]] unfair, because it is capable of repentance. It might have done some stupid actions, but it does not weigh up to the damage to forests done by private citizens and minor official bodies.

In 991 AD, vikings attacked an Anglo-Saxon defence-force led by their duke, Beorhtnoth, resulting in brutal fighting along the banks of the river Blackwater, near Maldon in Essex. The attack is widely considered one of the defining conflicts of tenth-century England, due to it being immortalised in the poem, The Battle of Maldon.
 Written shortly after the battle, the poem now survives only as a 325-line fragment, but its value to today is incalculable, not just as an heroic tale but in vividly expressing the lost language of our ancestors and celebrating ideals of loyalty and friendship.
 J.R.R. Tolkien considered The Battle of Maldon 'the last surviving fragment of ancient English heroic minstrelsy'. It would inspire him to compose, during the 1930s, his own dramatic verse-dialogue, The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son, which imagines the aftermath of the great battle when two of Beorhtnoth’s retainers come to retrieve their duke’s body.
