I See Fire is a song, written and performed by Ed Sheeran, that features in the end credits of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. {{Blockquote|<poem>Oh, misty eye of the mountain below
Keep watching over Durin's sons

If this is to end in fire
Then we should all burn together
Watch the flames climb high into the night
Calling out father, oh, stand by and we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on
The mountain side

And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine for the last time
Calling out father, oh
Prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn auburn over
The mountain side

Desolation comes upon the sky

Now I see fire
Inside the mountain
I see fire
Burning the trees
And I see fire
Hollowing souls
I see fire
Blood in the breeze
And I hope that you remember me

Oh, should my people fall in
Surely I'll do the same
Confined in mountain halls
We got too close to the flame
Calling out father, oh
Hold fast and we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on
The mountain side

Desolation comes upon the sky
I see fire
And I see fire
Blood in the breeze
And I hope that you remember me

And if the night is burning
I will cover my eyes
For if the dark returns then
My brothers will die
And as the sky is falling down
It crashed into this lonely town
And with that shadow upon the ground
I hear my people screaming out

Now I see fire
Inside the mountain
I see fire
And I see fire
Hollowing souls
And I see fire
Blood in the breeze

I see fire (Oh you know I saw a city burning) (fire)
And I see fire (Feel the heat upon my skin, yeah) (fire)
As the snowflakes cover my fallen brothers
I will say this last goodbye

Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away

Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the Sea

Under cloud, beneath the stars
Over snow one winter’s morn
I turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
To bid you farewell
Many places I have been
Many sorrows I have seen
But I don’t regret
Nor will I forget
All who took the road with me
VoicePlay's bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, released a second YouTube music video in 2023 based on Tolkien's Middle Earth, "I See Fire," on his indie solo channel. He is costumed as Thorin, Kili, Fili, and Bofur; the characters he previously portrayed in his cover of "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold." He sings this tune as if this group of warriors are facing another, and perhaps their last, battle. It is more poignant because we know that three of the four that he is portraying will not survive.

Geoff has an impressive vocal range (5 octaves) and goes all in on his music videos. All of the vocals and instrumentation are solely his. In VoicePlay, Geoff mostly stays in the low bass range. In his solo work, begun during the pandemic shutdown when VoicePlay could no longer tour, he sings everything from low bass to tenor.
::Geoff Castellucci just released a third Tolkien-based music video this month, "Song of Durin." Geoff's new release caused me to look up some other covers and then visit this website to refresh my memory on Gimli's song. It's been about three years since I've done another thorough reread of Tolkien. I just think it's cool that new music covers of Tolkien draw in the younger generations. My grandchildren would have been introduced soon anyway since my SIL is a huge fan too. Geoff's covers just brought them into the fold sooner. Far over the misty mountains cold is a poem found within the chapter "An Unexpected Party" of The Hobbit.

History
While at Bag End after the unexpected party, Thorin and Company brought out their instruments and began to sing. This is said to be "like a fragment of their song, if it can be like their song without music." Their powerful singing roused the "Tookish" side of Bilbo, and for a moment a desire to explore and adventure came upon him, although the thought of plundering dragons quickly restored his less adventurous "Baggins" nature.

Text
<poem style="font-style:italic; margin-left:20px;">
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.

The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.

The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
Then dragon’s ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall, to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!
</poem>

Later that night, while Bilbo lay in bed trying to fall asleep, he could still hear Thorin humming in the next room over:
<poem style="font-style:italic; margin-left:20px;">
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To find our long-forgotten gold.
</poem>
:Parts of the song are sung by the dwarves of Thorin's Company when they meet Bilbo for the first time. They sing it again at Bag End, before Bilbo decides to join them on their quest. Finally, the song is reprised after the death of Smaug, during the dwarves' preparations for the defence of Erebor. The song is the last track on the official soundtrack and is titled "Misty Mountains Cold".

1989: Hobit (1989 Slovak radio series):
:This radio miniseries adapts the song in a heavily abbreviated version. The dwarves sing it several times throughout the radio play. The lyrics are also more of a loose translation or interpretation of the novel's original lyrics. They do not examine the backstory of the Sack of Erebor and the dwarves' exile from Erebor in-depth.
:A modified version of the song is sung by Thorin (Richard Armitage) and the rest of the Company during the unexpected party at Bag End. Neil Finn also sings a variation of the song entitled "Song of the Lonely Mountain" in the ending credits of the film.

"I See Fire" cover by Geoff Castellucci (YouTube)

<poem style="font-style:italic; margin-left:20px;">The world was young, the mountains green,
No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone.
He named the nameless hills and dells;
He drank from yet untasted wells;
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
And saw a crown of stars appear,
As gems upon a silver thread,
Above the shadow of his head.

The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.

A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone for ever fair and bright.

There hammer on the anvil smote,
There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason built.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.

Unwearied then were Durin's folk;
Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.

The world is grey, the mountains old,
The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls:
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;
The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dûm.
But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.</poem>
:Gimli (portrayed by Vladimír Hajdu) sings the Song of Durin during the Fellowship's journey through Moria, as in the novel. The lyrics of the song are not entirely identical with the original English lyrics (especially when it comes to references to First Age events and locations), but follows the structure and ideas of the original lyrics closely. Gimli presents the poem in a half-reciting, half-singing manner. Its slow and melancholy tune is accompanied by flute (the main melody), a subtle sound of a hammer clanging against an anvil in the distance (indicating the rhythm) and occasional string instrument additions (for emphasizing mood).
