DescriptionSixth Beacon-hill of Gondor

Calenhad was the sixth and penultimate penultimate Beacon-hill of Gondor, which ran west from Minas Tirith on the northern side of the White Mountains that looked down on the plains of Anórien.[1] It was located to south-east of Firienholt.

Description

Calenhad was a small, green, treeless hill, slightly bigger and taller than Erelas.[2] Its beacon was seldom lit and its lighting during the War of the Ring indicated great urgency.

Hitstory

On the night of 7 March T.A. 3019,[3] Gandalf and Pippin, riding eastward on Shadowfax, saw the beacons being lit to call for aid from Rohan.[4]

Etymology

It is suggested in the Unfinished Tales that Calenhad probably means "green space" from the Sindarin (calen "green" + sad (lenited to had) "place, spot").[5] In "The Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor", however, Tolkien suggested that the second element may be sâdh "sward, turf".[2]

Portrayal in adaptations

2015: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Calenhad is located in the Beacon-hills, on a hill much smaller than the nearby Beacon-hills of Min-Rimmon and Halifirien. A small unnamed village sits to the south of the beacon.
