Edrahil was an Elf of Nargothrond.
History
Edrahil was the chief of the ten Elves who remained loyal to Finrod Felagund at the time he set out with Beren on the Quest for the Silmaril. He was the one who lifted Finrod's cast-down crown and asked that it be given to a steward until the king returned. Later he died in the dungeons of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, devoured by a werewolf, alongside his companions.[1][2]
Etymology
The name Edrahil is Sindarin and not explicitly defined.[3] Of the constituent elements, edra is a Sindarin verb meaning meaning "open (out)",[4]:45 while hil is frequent in Sindarin in words pertaining to "follow", derived from the root KHIL[4]:18
According to an earlier version of the legendarium, the character's name was Enedrion,[5] a Noldorin also not explicitly defined.[3] Of the constituent elements, ened means "centre"[6]:16 and -ion is a common masculine suffix for "son of".
