Hasufel was the grey-coated steed of Gárulf of Rohan. After the loss of his master in the Ambush at Fangorn Forest, Hasufel followed the éored of Éomer until he lent it to Aragorn when they met in the northern fields of Rohan.[1]
The hardy creature saw many adventures, including the Battle of the Hornburg, before Aragorn was brought his own horse, Roheryn, by the Rangers of the North.
Etymology
According to Robert Foster, hasufel means "dark skin" in Old English.[2] Hasu means "grey".
Sigurd's horse in Morris' "Sigurd the Volsung" is named "Grayfell," although the Norse name is "Grani."
Portrayal in adaptations
2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers:
- Hasufel is loaned to Aragorn as in the book, but they become separated in a battle with warg riders. Aragorn is then found by the films-exclusive horse Brego, who then becomes his chosen mount.
2012: The Lord of the Rings Online:
- Arod and Hasufel, led by Shadowfax, appear in a mission in which the player has to stop Mordor orcs from stealing Black Horses of Rohan.
