Hugin[1] was a wise Barding who was one of several representatives of Lake-town at the Council of Elrond.
Hugin is an original creation for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring film. He is portrayed by Ralph Johnson.[2]
History
Hugin was a wise Barding who lived in Lake-town during the late Third Age. Elrond, the Lord of Rivendell, invited representatives of factions of the Free peoples of Middle-earth to a Council which aimed to answer the growing threat of Mordor. Wise emissaries from Dale were sent to Rivendell to the Council of Elrond: Hugin and Ottar of Lake-town and Erland and Járnsmid of Dale. Their main purpose was to tell Elrond of an offer made by Sauron.
During the Council, Hugin sat between Boromir and Járnsmid. He flinched when Gimli attempted to destroy the One Ring with his axe.
The Council erupted into as its members disagreed on what to do with the Ring. Hugin stood up and began yelling. He and Járnsmid argued with Figwit and another Elf. Their furious bout raged on until Frodo Baggins, the Shire-hobbit who brought the Ring to Rivendell, volunteered to take the Ring to Mordor and destroy it. Hugin watched as eight others offered to join Frodo on his quest. He sat back down and watched Lord Elrond dub Frodo and his eight companions "The Fellowship of the Ring".
