History
Ilberic was the second son of Seredic Brandybuck and Hilda Bracegirdle, born in S.R. 1391. In S.R. 1401 little Ilberic attended Bilbo's Farewell Party with his family.[1]
Etymology
The meaning of the name Ilberic is unknown. J.R.R. Tolkien noted that the names of the Bucklanders had a vaguely Celtic style.[2]
Jim Allan suggests that the name Ilberic seems to be Germanic. It is a variaton of the name Alberic and contains the elements alb ("Elf") and ric ("reign", "rule"). Alberic is a dwarf king in medieval German heroic literature who appears in Richard Wagner's Ring cycle.[3]
Other versions of the legendarium
In an earlier version of the family tree for the Brandybucks, the name of Ilberic was Alberic.[4]
