Mattocks were a type of weapon used by the Dwarves of the Iron Hills in the battle of Azanulbizar[1] and in the battle of Five Armies.[2] They were heavy and required two hands to use.[3] Náin used a mattock in the battle of Azanulbizar fighting against Azog, but his mattock splintered on the stone and Náin himself was killed[1].
