Saelbeth[1] was an Elven Councilor who attended the Council of Elrond.
Saelbeth is an original creation for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring film. He is portrayed by Matt Appleton.[2][3]
History
Saelbeth was an Elf of Rivendell during the Third Age who held the position of Councilor. When Elrond, the Lord of Rivendell, invited representatives of factions of the Free peoples of Middle-earth to a Council which aimed to answer the growing threat of Mordor, Saelbeth attended the Council. During the Council, he sat in between Gandalf the Grey and Silinde.
During the Counci, he conferred with Silinde.[4] Saelbeth watched as Gandalf recited the Black Speech of Mordor to deter Boromir from touching the One Ring.
The Council turned to Chaos as its members disagreed on what to do with the One Ring. Gimli's proclamation "I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an Elf" was the final straw for Saelbeth and he stood up and began yelling.
The Council's furious bout of yelling raged on until Frodo Baggins, the Shire-hobbit who brought the Ring to Rivendell, volunteered to take the Ring to Mordor and destroy it. Saelbeth stepped back to let Gandalf the Grey pass, as he offered to accompany Frodo. He watched on as others volunteered to join Frodo on his quest. He sat back down and watched Lord Elrond dub Frodo and his eight companions "The Fellowship of the Ring".
Before the Company left, Saelbeth bestowed wisdom upon them, preparing them for the dangers they would face on their quest.[1]
