Welcome to Tolkien Gateway

Are you the user roacsonofcarc from the r tolkienfans Reddit that I invited to join Tolkien Gateway? I noticed in your edit to this page that you seem to be unfamiliar with the templates for books and other sources that we use in Tolkien Gateway. Did you use the "Edit" or the "Edit source" method to edit the Meduseld page? I recommend to you to have a look at some pages on Tolkien Gateway that display the contents of templates for references (e.g. Template:FR for The Fellowship of the Ring, Template:TT for The Two Towers, Template:RK for The Return of the King, Template:App for The Appendices of The Lord of the Rings, Template:RS for The Return of the Shadow, Template:TI for The Treason of Isengard, Template:WR for The War of the Ring, Template:SD for Sauron Defeated, Template:PM for The Peoples of Middle Earth, Template:UT for Unfinished Tales, Template:S for The Silmarillion, Template:HM for many other primary and secondary works, such as The Lord of the Rings - A Reader's Companion, Template:PE for Parma Eldalamberion, Template:VT for Vinyar Tengwar). I also recommend to you to have a look at TG:MoS The Tolkien Gateway Manual of Style and Help:References which contains our standard for using or not using page numbers for references to certain books. Thank you. I believe I am getting the hang of the templates. I have read through the style manuals once and will study them further. Sonofcarc (talk) 21:53, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Since you are a new user, I have been reviewing and correcting your recent edits. I appreciate your efforts to contribute to the quality of the pages on Tolkien Gateway. I noticed that you accidentally deleted the reference for the burg component in Mundburg in your last edit to the Mundburg page. I have corrected that. I have also noticed that you introduced an unnecessary alternative text "Meduseld o" probably accidentally including the "o" from "on" in the link to the Meduseld page in your edit on the Gúthwine page. I corrected that. There is no need to add double quotation marks to names for references. Please use the preview function when you make edits to check if everything looks as intended before you save an edit. In case that you do not already know, I recommend The Thain's book on thainsbook.minastirith.cz as a high quality source with references to obtain a first idea which information is around in which books on a certain topic (i.e. person, place, region, object, etc.). --Akhôrahil (talk) 15:40, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. I'm trying. Sonofcarc (talk) 16:01, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You're doing great, thanks so much for your help! Hyarion (talk) 17:51, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for all the feedback. Here is a question: I see places in the Rohan chapters where I think it would be useful to point to influences from Beowulf. What is the best reference to cite of a text like this that is in the public domain and widely disseminated? There is at least one online text that I consult regularly. I also have two different dual-text books with facing-page translations. Probably a lot of people have the one by Seamus Heaney. Tolkien's version is often relevant, but it doesn't give the OE text. Thanks for any advice. Sonofcarc (talk) 21:00, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't really have any book dealing with the subject in question specifically, but I do have (and recommend) The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien by John Garth - it is a 'general knowledge' type of book, but it does have references to Beowulf influences on Tolkien, some of them referring to the Rohirrim. - IvarTheBoneless (talk) 21:59, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
