Crayon drawing by J.R.R. Tolkien of the steps leading up to the West-gate of Moria. This picture was first published in The J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar 1973 with a mistaken description and title, as Christopher Tolkien thought this was a depiction of the stairs that led to the eastern Gates. Instead, this was a fragment from File:J.R.R. Tolkien - West Gate of Moria.jpg, which was cut off because it did not match the description in the published book, as it was probably drawn before.
