“Map of the Northern Waste”, by Karin & Christian Bohr

In Middle-earth Role Playing, the Bleak Mountains (S. Ered Muil) were a mountain range in the Northern Waste.[1]

The Aeglir Arvethed (S. “Unending Peaks”) were the granite peaks of the western march of the Bleak Mountains. Dwarves tried to mine there, but these mines were not profitable. A labyrinthine set of caverns near the centre of the peaks led into the Under-deeps.[2]

Near where the Aeglir Arvethed branched off was the Linnarthurras (S. “Peak of Indomitable Song”), the peak on which the frozen Noldorin lord Lindor stood, who had been defeated by Eloeklo, the Demon of the North Wind.

Between the Aeglir Arvethed and the main mountain range lay the plain of Torogmar. The caverns of its many peaks and foothills were home to Snow-trolls.[3]

North of Torogmar, the Mountains were infested with Orcs. While normally disorganized and prone to inter-tribal warfare, the Orcs were eventually united under the Orc-king Agog. Before the rise of Agog, the Orcs paid tribute to the ice-drake Canadras in the form of prisoners.[1]

Canadras (S. “Four-horn”) had his lair in a promontory to the north of the mountains, which was named after him. His lair used to be an Elven cavern-palace.[4]

The northernmost spire of the Bleak Mountains was called Orod Certhas (S. “Rune Mountain”). It was named because its smooth granite cliffs were engraved with cirth. These inscriptions were every spell woven by the Elves, and the Noldorin regularly went on pilgrimages to the Rune Mountain to engrave new spells. Neither Canadras nor the Orcs had dared to defile these, nor did the Noldorin explain why they chose that mountain for their spells.[5]

A foothill to the southeast of the Bleak Mountains, Amon Anlug (S. “Worm's Hill”), was home to an old Orc-hold which the marsh-drake Ningarach used as her lair.[2]
