Úrgost is one of the main characters in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. He is a winged fire-dragon who forged an alliance with Eradan, Andriel and Farin on their quest.
History
During the War of the Ring, a dwarf exploring the Grey Mountains discovered Úrgost. As the battles raged at Minas Tirith, Erebor, and Mirkwood, the Black Númenórean Agandaûr struck a deal with Úrgost: if Agandaûr conquered the dwarf mountain Nordinbad, Úrgost would pledge his allegiance to him and Sauron. Agandaûr stationed some Uruk-hai and Men of Carn Dûm to await Úrgost's response while he plotted against Nordinbad.[2]
Unbeknownst to Úrgost, three heroes, Eradan, Andriel and Farin, defeated the forces Agandaûr had left behind. When they entered Úrgost's lair, the dragon roared with anger, mistaking them for Agandaûr's minions. Realizing they were not, Úrgost questioned their presence. Upon hearing their purpose, he revealed Agandaûr's offer and admitted he had no interest in Nordinbad, preferring to conquer Carn Dûm instead. He was unafraid to fight Agandaûr but knew defying Sauron would make him a target. To avoid this, he proposed to remain neutral if the heroes promised him Carn Dûm after Agandaûr's defeat. He then warned them to hurry if they wanted to save Nordinbad, sarcastically adding, "Oh yes. By all means, hurry," as they departed.[2]
During the Battle of the Morannon, the heroes confronted and defeated Agandaûr. With Agandaûr's death, Úrgost flew from his lair to Carn Dûm. Upon arrival, he confronted the heroes again, breathing immense flames. Sensing Sauron's fall, Úrgost knew he had been wise not to ally with him. He reminded the heroes of their bargain, and they affirmed their agreement. Satisfied, Úrgost flew off to enjoy his new domain, while the heroes, riding the Great Eagle Beleram, returned to Rivendell for a well-deserved rest.[3]
