  • ? (mid-month) - J.R.R. Tolkien receives galley-proofs of the first volume from Allen and Unwin; he realised that some words have been over-corrected (dwarves to dwarfs, elvish to elfish, further to farther, and worst of all, elven to elfin).[2]
  • 8 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes Letter 137e.
  • 28 - Rayner Unwin presses Tolkien to choose titles for each volume for Lord of the Rings; he erroneously proposes that the general title should belong to the first volume.[3][4]
