Aravir (T.A. 2156^[1] - 2319,^[2] died aged 163) was the fourth Chieftain of the Dúnedain, following his father, Aranuir, upon his death in 2247.

History

Aravir's rule was uneventful, except for the usual skirmishes with orcs. Aravir died in 2319, after having been Chieftain for seventy-two years, and was followed by his son Aragorn I.^[2]

Etymology

Aravir is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but the Association Tolkiendil suggests it means "Royal Jewel".^[3] It is probably a compound of the prefix ar(a)- ("noble", "royal", "high") and the lenited form vir of mîr ("jewel", "treasure", precious thing).^[3]^[4]
