Balglin[1] was an Elven warrior who fought in the Battle of the Hornburg.
Balglin is an original creation for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers film. He is portrayed by Andy Gunn.[2][3][4]
History
Balglin was an Elven archer of the Third Age. He was a strong warrior who asked for no quarter and received none in return.
When the Rohirrim, under leadership from Théoden King, retreated to the Hornburg in Helm's Deep, Saruman the White sent an army of over ten thousand Uruk-hai to assail them. When Lord Elrond of Rivendell and Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn of Lothlórien heard of this, they decided to honour the ages-old allegiance between Men and Elves. They sent a join force of Elves, led by Haldir, to assist the Rohirrim in their battle against the Uruks. Balglin was part of this force sent to the Hornburg.
Balglin was stationed on the front line of the Deeping Wall of the Hornburg. When the Uruks began marching toward the fortress, Aragorn yelled "Release arrows!" in Sindarin and Balglin fired. After the forces of Isengard breached the Deeping Wall with the fire of Orthanc, a group of Uruks marched forward with pikes. Gimli jumped into the group and killed a few Uruk-hai before being knocked to the ground. Again, Aragorn yelled "Hado i philinn!" and the group of archers behind him, including Balglin,[4] fired arrows into the Uruks. Aragorn yelled "Charge"! in Sindarin and the Elves ran forward, knocking the pikes out of the way and slaying Uruks.
Ultimately, Haldir and the rest of the Elven reinforcements were slain during the Battle. Their efforts were not in vain, however, as the few Rohirrim left alive were able to hold out until Gandalf arrived with Éomer's Éored and forced the Uruks to retreat into the forest, where they were killed by Huorns.
