Das Geheimnis der Ringe (“The Secret of the Rings“) was a trilogy of German multimedia CD-ROMs developed by Cerasus and published by Topos. The titles were released to coincide with the film series, though they were not licensed products.

The first two volumes were also released under the title Die Macht der Ringe (“The Power of the Rings”) with minor differences, and the first volume also under the name Die Welt der Ringe (“The World of the Rings”).^[1]

Volumes

The first volume was one of the bestsellers of its publisher Topos.^[2] It boasts a gallery of artwork by Anke Eißmann, a lexicon of characters (which differs between versions), a map of Middle-earth, a quiz game, and a list of web links (differs between versions). One of the iterations of the lexicon features a handful of illustrations by Douglas Carrell.

Volume two has the map as well, but also has a dictionary, a lexicon of places, a very simple game where you shoot fell beasts, a cookbook, and a calendar application which could be installed separately.

The third volume includes a chess game, a print studio, and themes and icons for operating systems.

The links section of the first volume, encompassing both English and German websites, provides a snapshot of the online Lord of the Rings fandom between the years 2000 and 2001. Many websites listed have either disappeared or underwent significant changes.
