Durlach was a Balrog of Angband invented by Iron Crown Enterprises for Middle-earth Role Playing. While he was described as one of the mightiest beings to still inhabit the Northern Waste by the Third Age, he was spell-bound to Morgoth's Well after the War of Wrath.[2]
Durlach often appeared as a giant shimmering red-and-yellow serpent with slitted eyes, though he was also able to appear in the shape of a demon.[3]
History
Morgoth's Well (S. “Eithel Morgoth”) was a volcanic basin that had been shaped into the forge and armoury of Angband.[4] During the destruction of Angband, the enthralled elf Hirgon bound Durlach to the pit of lava before perishing.[3] While the Well's fortifications were destroyed in the War of Wrath, the caldera of the forge remained. Its remaining tunnels and pits reached into the Under-forges of the Under-deeps.[4][5]
On a mission to cleanse the Northern Waste from Morgoth's taint by planting trees, Hirgon's brother was slain by Durlach in Morgoth's Well.[6] His companions set up a tomb for him on the slopes of the Well.[7]
The lake of lava in the Well slowly rose during the Third Age, and the spell that bound Durlach to the Well would be broken if it ever overflowed.[2]
