Hallas (Third Age 2480[1] – 2605,[2] aged 125 years) was the thirteenth Ruling Steward of Gondor.

History

Hallas was the heir of Steward Cirion, who committed the rule of Minas Tirith to his son while Cirion led an army north to fight the Balchoth in T.A. 2510. Following the unexpected victory at the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, Hallas was a witness when Cirion gifted Calenardhon to Eorl the Young and his people.[3] In fact, it was Hallas who devised the names Rohan and Rohirrim.[4]

Hallas died in T.A. 2605 and was succeeded by his son, who became Steward Húrin II.[2]

Etymology

Hallas is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but David Salo suggests that it means "tallness" and is a combination of hall ("tall") and the abstract ending -as.[5][6]
