Joel Tobeck is a Kiwi actor who portrayed Guritz in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. His scenes were filmed for the pickups for the film[1] in 2003.[2]
The prosthetics for Guritz took five hours to apply and Tobeck became good friends with Make-up artist Gino Acevedo.[2]
It was initially reported that Tobeck would portray Sméagol, prior to his transformation,[3] though it was reported that he was no longer being considered. It was decided Andy Serkis would play him both before and after his transformation.[4]
Quotes
I was a little reluctant at first to do it because I was a bit because I'd done a lot of prosthetic work before on Hercules and Xena and other shows that that Pacific Renaissance had made so i was a bit like "Do I really want to do prosthetic makeup?" But then I went "Hang on, hang on. Joel, come on. It's Lord of the Rings. It's Peter Jackson. It's the the biggest trilogy since whatever. Get over yourself.
