History
John Jethro Rashbold was an undergraduate at Magdalen College in Oxford. He was a classical scholar and an apprentice poet. He was introduced to the Notion Club by Philip Frankley, to whom he was much attached.[1]
Inspiration
The name Rashbold is a play on J.R.R. Tolkien's own surname. It is a rough translation of Tolkien (from German Toll-kühn) which means "foolhardy".[2][3]
