Oatbarton was a town or village in the Northfarthing of the Shire. The Northway led from Oatbarton to the East Road.[1]
Etymology
The element -barton, common in English place-names (Old English: beretun "barley-town") means "outlying grange, demesne farm",[2] therefore the place was related to a large oat-farm.
Portrayal in adaptations
2008: The Lord of the Rings Online:
- Oatbarton is located within the in-game Evendim region, just outside of the Shire proper, although this is merely a gameplay distinction. It is a farm town, with the largest Northcotton farm located directly to the west of it. Halfast Gamgee lives in Oatbarton.
