Prefatory Remarks on Prose Translation of 'Beowulf' is a preface written by J.R.R. Tolkien for John R. Clark Hall's book Beowulf and the Finnsburg Fragment, published in 1940. It was reprinted as "On Translating Beowulf" in The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays (1983).
In the section "On Metre", Tolkien quotes 19 lines from his own alliterative translation of Beowulf (The Tale of Beewolf Son of Echgethew) to explain the metre of the poem. More portions from this work were published in 2024 as no. 88 of The Collected Poems of J.R.R. Tolkien.
