Smith of Wootton Major is a long essay by J.R.R. Tolkien on Smith of Wootton Major. Selected quotes from the essay were published in A Question of Time: J.R.R. Tolkien's Road to Faërie (1997). The essay was published in full within the extended edition of Smith of Wootton Major.
In the essay Tolkien meticulously provides Smith of Wootton Major’s "back-story and philosophical underpinning"[1] and "the narrative’s invisible but essential supporting structure"[1].[2]
After denying that Smith of Wootton Major is an allegory, Tolkien describes the story's physical setting and the politics/economy of the three villages (Wootton Major, Wootton Minor, and Walton) and their relationship with Faery.[2]
