According to this blog post the gentleman in question was a "fan" of Lewis' writing and supporting him with food parcels.
I think it would be enough to mention it already but if anyone has access to this book:
"Many Times & Many Places: C. S. Lewis and the Value of History" - C. S. Lewis & the Value of History by K. Alan Snyder & Jamin Metcalf they could do a proper write-up?
