The existence of this article has been questioned in an edit comment and I was inclined to a similar scepticism at first as well. However, I searched a bit on the net and found at least two lengthy discussions about this concept among fans/Tolkienists (see here and here). Christopher Tolkien also acknowledged the mystery of the "shadow" in the HoMe, so I think the concept might deserve a page of itself.
As per Tolkien Gateway's praxis to sometimes provide summaries of fans' discussions (especially when a concept has been insufficiently covered in scholarly works), I will revert this edit. The background section still needs to be properly referenced, though, and non-encyclopedic language removed. --Morgan 21:53, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Cleanup
I reformatted the background section and added further citation. I don't have a copy of The Return of the Shadow, so if someone could grab a page number for that I'd be grateful.
