The Corsairs of Umbar is the thirty-seventh scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (extended edition). This scene was not featured in the theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Synopsis

The Corsairs of Umbar pass by the shore where Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli stand. Aragorn demands that they stop, declaring that they may not enter Gondor. They laugh at him, and ask "Who are you to deny us passage?" Aragorn tells Legolas to fire a warning shot, Gimli nudges Legolas's bow. The arrow hits on of the men and Gimli tells them to prepare to be boarded. The leader laughs and asks, "You and whose army". Aragorn responds, "This army" and the Oathbreakers come out from the mountain and charge the ship.

Differences

Legolas and Gimli recounted the events of this scene in The Last Debate

  • It is unknown whether the Army of the Dead could cause physical harm. Their sole weapon was their ability to inflict fear so powerful that all men jumped overboard.[1]
  • After defeating the fleet, Aragorn held their oaths fulfilled and released them.[1]
  • The main fleet of the Umbar had fifty great ships and smaller vessels beyond count.[1]
  • They freed slaves aboard the ships who then aided them.[1] This is not shown in the movies.
