The Grey Annals, first part in The War of the Jewels book, is an account of the early events in Middle-earth, such as: the awakening of the Elves, the tale of Beren and the story of Túrin Turambar.
"Real-life development / comments on The Grey Annals"
- CT's discussion of "AB 1", "AV 1", "AB 2", "AV 2".
- There is some evidence that the Grey Annals followed the Annals of Aman (in its primary form), but the two works were, I feel certain, closely associated in time of composition.
- Use by CT in development of The Silmarillion
- GA abandoned at the death of Túrin (§349), - although, as will be seen subsequently (pp. 251 ff.), he added elements of a continuation at some later time.
"In-world"
§1 (paraphrased here by me) outlines what these are and who wrote them -> that these are the Annals of Beleriand <- made by the Sindar, Grey Elves of Doriath and the Havens, and from records and memories of those of the Noldor (from Nargothrond and Gondolin) who were at the Mouth of Sirion (towards end of First age if I interpret this correctly)
§2 discusses the origin of name "Beleriand", and description of lands given that name (i.e., what parts of Middle-earth is encompassed at what time)
(comments by me): The following table might be a helpful way to succinctly summarise the key events covered by the Grey Annals - Events and years sections might be somewhat similar to the Timeline but I think the "§s" might be quite helpful here, especially since most references of GA across the wiki have a § to refer to.
