History
Madoc was the son of Gormadoc Brandybuck and Malva Headstrong. He married to Hanna Goldworthy and was the father of Marmadoc Brandybuck. He served as Master of Buckland between S.R. 1236 and S.R. 1277.[1]
Etymology
The meaning of the name Madoc is unknown. J.R.R. Tolkien noted that the names of the Bucklanders had a vaguely Celtic style.[2]
Madoc is a Welsh name, which is derived from the element mad ("fortunate"). According to a tradition a Madoc who was the son of Owen Gwynedd discovered America around A.D. 1170. A Madok de la Montayne is mentioned by Malory in Le Morte Darthur.[3]
